Stelpflug, Lt. Col. William Joseph (Ret.)
Lt. Col. William Joseph Stelpflug (USAF Ret.) of Auburn died peacefully at home Monday, August 15, 2011, at the age of 82. He was born July 12, 1929, to Joseph and Laura (Hesser) Stelpflug in Appleton, Wis., the second of two children, and graduated from St. Mary's
High School in Appleton, Wis. He held a B.S. in mechanical engineering from The University of Notre Dame and a M.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado.
He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during Cold War Europe and Vietnam where he flew 100 F-4 combat missions. He taught aeronautical engineering at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; mechanical engineering at Tuskegee University; and mechanical engineering and aviation management at Auburn University.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Stelpflug; and son, Lance Cpl. Bill Stelpflug, USMC.
Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years Peggy (Blank) Stelpflug; and children Laura (Al) Barfield of Grenada, Miss.; Kathy (Mike) Nathan of Holland, Mich .; Christy(John) Williford of Auburn; Joe and Catherine (Hearn) Stelpflug of Raleigh, N.C.; and nine grandchildren: Al, Susan, Katie, Billy, Carson, Brandon, Maggie, Will, and Joe.
Arrangements are in the care of Alabama Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Dadeville. Services will be private. Those planning an expression of sympathy can consider the charity of their choice.
