    Obituary:
Servanius P. Van Den Berg, son of the late John and Hattie (Diedrich) Van Den Berg passed away on July 16, 2009, at the Good Shepherd Home, Seymour. He was born on Feb. 7, 1922, in Freedom. His birth mother passed away when he was two years old. His father re-married the late Minnie Diedrich whom Servanius remembered as his mother.
On June 3, 1947, Servanius married Jane Ambrosius, daughter of Joseph and Anna Ambrosius, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, De Pere. Jane passed away Aug. 15, 1991. During the first years of marriage, Servanius worked at the Combined Locks Paper Mill and eventually came back to work on his father's farm in Freedom before purchasing his own farm in 1963 in the Town of Wrightstown. There he farmed until his retirement in 1974 due to his arthritic condition.
Servanius loved his family, farming and country music. He loved entertaining people with his guitar and harmonicas. Above all, he loved to talk and visit with people.
Servanius is survived by his four children and their spouses: James (Nancy) Van Den Berg, De Pere; Sharon (Gary) Kempen, Freedom; Mark (Diane) Van Den Berg, Oshkosh; Sandra (Robert) Schmit, Freedom. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren: Noelle Van Den Berg (fiance, Eric Van Remortel); Tanner and Kelcie Van Den Berg; Mary Kempen, David (Megan) Kempen, Catherine (Larry) Lambie, Tim Kempen (special friend, Melissa Walsh), Mark (Leah) Kempen, Savannah and Lenae Van Den Berg, Ashley and Justin Schmit. Servanius has four great-grandchildren: Callie, Natalie, Collin, and Raena Lambie. Servanius is further survived by his sister, Marcella Vande Walle, De Pere, and a sister-in-law, Marie Van Den Berg, Freedom. Survivors from his wife's family include sisters and brothers-in-law: Nell Manders, De Pere, Arlene Calaway, Kaukauna, and Gerald and Joan Ambrosius, Seymour.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and parents-in-law, an infant son, Gary Joseph, an infant daughter, Catherine Jane, a brother, Robert Van Den Berg, and a brother-in-law, Norbert Vande Walle. Deceased from his wife's family include Ervin (Gladys) Ambrosius, Marian (Joseph) Willems, (Eugene) Manders Sr., Frances (Arthur) Vande Hei, Lorraine (Elmer) Green, (Robert) Calaway, Donald (Helen) Ambrosius.
Dad was a man of virtue, setting a good example for others through his patience, humility, modesty and kindness. He never spoke a foul or impure word. We are blessed to have had him as our father. He was accepting of any suffering that came his way. His reply to his afflictions would be," that's just the way it is, I guess." He was devoted to the Passion and Crucifixion of Our Lord and understood what it meant to share in the suffering of the Cross. Dad was also devoted to the wearing of the scapular. He died on the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
While farming in his early days, Servanius was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, and later, after moving to Wrightstown, he became a member of St. Paul Catholic Church for the remainder of his life.
The family sincerely thanks the staff of Good Shepherd Nursing Home for all the respect and loving care they have given our father in his last years. We also wish to thank the staff at St. Vincent Hospital and Rev. Dave Hoffman for all the care and concern they have shown him. We will also forever appreciate the visits and concerns shown by many, many family members and friends.
Visitation for Servanius will be held Monday, July 20, 2009, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, from 4 to 8 p.m. Parish wake at 7:30 p.m.. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at St. Clare Parish- St. Paul Catholic Church site, 437 Main St., Wrights-town, from 10 a.m. until time of Mass.
