    Obituary:
God took Bob home on Monday, April 3, 2017, ending his suffering from brain cancer. Bob passed away at Cherry Meadows, Appleton, with his family at his side. He was born on May 21, 1940, in Appleton, and was a life-long resident of Appleton. He grew up on Fremont Street in what was known as Appleton's 4th Ward, where everyone had a nickname. Bob was affectionately known as "Little Eggs", "Mohair" and "Thunder." He attended Zion Lutheran Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High School and Appleton (West) High School where he excelled as an athlete.
Bob earned a football scholarship to the University of Miami, where he was coached by Andy Gustafson and also Hank Stram, whom he very much admired. He played in several bowl games and was named Outstanding Lineman of the 1961 Liberty Bowl Game. Bob joined ROTC to serve his country and to help fund his education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1962.
Shortly after high school, Bob began dating Mary Ellen Bowers, whom he often described as the Love of his Life. They married on a freezing day, the 26th of January, 1963 at St. Joseph Catholic Church and immediately set off for Lawton, Oklahoma, where Bob served for two years in the U.S. Army as an artillery commander, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.
After returning to Appleton in 1965, Bob worked for American Can Company and learned computer coding from his brother, Bill. He eventually took a job in the administration at UW Oshkosh, where he worked until his retirement. During his career he was instrumental in implementing the on-line registration process and other projects marking the university's entry into the digital age. Following his retirement, he volunteered weekly at the St. Joseph Food Pantry.
Bob loved to coach football and spent a few seasons mentoring young players as an assistant coach for the Pop Warner League, Appleton West and Xavier High Schools. But his biggest accomplishments were serving as a beloved husband to Mary Ellen; a mentor and father to his children, Andrea and Rebecca; and "Bupka" to his granddaughter Laura, and step-grandchildren, Alicia and Kyle. He also enjoyed all outdoor activities, including fishing, biking, cross country skiing, boating, golfing and kayaking.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen (Bowers) Eggert, Appleton; his daughters Andrea Ellen (Kenneth) Formella, Trabuco Canyon, California, and Rebecca Ann (Andrew) Formella, Hartland, Wisconsin; his three grandchildren, Laura Ann McCann, Clemson, South Carolina; Alicia Marie (Jeshua) Pope and Kyle Joseph Formella, Lawrenceville, Georgia; his brothers, Bill (Karen) Eggert, Appleton; Steve (Myra) Eggert, Tampa, Florida; his sisters, Bette (Chuck) Kunitz, Appleton; Marie Schwarm, Lake City, Iowa; Ellen (Gary) Fiebelkorn, Mountain Home, Arkansas; and Amiee (Rich) Zirpel, Rhinelander, Wisconsin; and his sister-in-law, Carol Eggert, Appleton. Bob is further survived by his in-laws, Barb (Dick) Waldhart, Carol (Charlie) Pond, Joe (Patti) Bowers and Rick Bowers (special friend Lori); and 18 nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Clara (Hammen) Eggert; his brother Mark Eggert; and his best friend, Carl Heimmermann.
Bob's family has everlasting gratitude to the staff at Peabody Manor, Cherry Meadows and ThedaCare Hospice. Their loving and compassionate nursing care helped us all through Bob's last journey.
The Funeral Liturgy will be at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 7 , 2017 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 310 W. Lawrence Street, Appleton, with Fr. Jim Leary, O.F.M., Cap. officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 3:30 p.m. until the time of services. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. A memorial has been established in Bob's name to benefit The St. Joseph Food Pantry, ThedaCare Hospice Foundation, or Habitat for Humanity. Online condolences may be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com
