She was a memb er of the Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers Society of th at church, the woman's Catholic Order of Foresters and the Alter Societ y. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Carl Specht, of Milwaukee, Mr s. Joseph West and Mrs. Sylvester VanSchyndel, both of Appleton; five son s, Louis, of Appleton, Michael, Edward and Herbert all of Kaukauna, and Ch arles, of Neenah, two sisters, Mrs. Garrett Verhagen, of Kaukauna, and Mr s. Charles Unmuth, of Appleton; 30 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildre n. Friends may call after 730 tonight at the Fargo funeral home, Kaukaun a. The rosary will be recited at 8:00 tonight and Friday night. The cort ege will format 930 Saturday morning and services will be conducted at 10: 00 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church. Verona Van Schyndel, age 94, of Appleton, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Brewster Village. She was born on September 8, 1912, in Kaukauna to the late Matthias and Anna (Romenesko) Weber. On June 14, 1932, she was united in marriage to Sylvester Van Schyndel, and they shared 68 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death in 2000.
She was a charter member of St. Pius X. Catholic Church, the Lady Elks, St. Elizabeth Auxiliary, and United Commercial Travel. Verona enjoyed playing golf at Ridgeway Country Club, playing cards, especially bridge, and loved traveling.
She is survived by her children: Phyllis (Gabe) Gabrielson, Appleton; Ruth (Francis) Leahy, Appleton; Joseph (Kit) Van Schyndel, Appleton; grandchildren: Janet (Clark) Kreider, Dee Wais, Sara (Joseph) Daniel, Ann (David) Hovell, Steven (Meg) Leahy, Karen (Dan) Suminski, Peter Leahy, Robert (Shellie) Leahy, Deborah (Joe) Welch, Joanne (Jim) Coates, Victoria (Ross) Chisholm, Susan (Jim) VerVoort, Jack (Jenny) Van Schyndel; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two sisters-in-law, Mildred and Florence Weber.
In addition to her parents and her loving husband, Sylvester, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janet; brothers: Nicholas, Louis, Edward, Michael, Herbert, Charles; sisters: Mary Ann Specht, Kate West, Tess Kons.
Funeral Mass for Verona will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 12 noon at St. Pius X Catholic Church (500 West Marquette Street) with Father Tom Farrell officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass at church. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Little Chute. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.

Charles M. Weber 2600 Heritage Wo ods Drive Appleton Age 85, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Peabody Manor, Appleton. Charl ie was born on May 14, 1915, in Kaukauna to the late Mathias and Anna (Ro menesko) Weber. He married Dorothy Hoffman on May 31, 1941, in Mackvill e; she survives. Charlie graduated from Holy Cross Grade School in Kauk auna and the high school department of St. Francis Seminary in St. Franci s, Wisconsin. During the 1930s he worked with the Civilian Conservati on Corps in northern Wisconsin, a program which employed young men in t he forests, and sent part of their pay to their parents. Charlie was worki ng at the foundry in Kaukauna when he enlisted in the U.S. Army; he spe nt three years with the U.S. Army Ground Forces 18th Chemical Maintenan ce Company in WWII in Europe. He was entitled to the ETO Service Med al with battle stars for Northern France and Rhineland, Good Conduct Meda l, Distinguished Service Unit Citation, Victory Medal and three overse as service bars. Charlie was a member of the Catholic Knights, Cathol ic Order of the Foresters, lifetime member of Veterans Of Foreign Wars, and held a Gold Card (50+ years) in the national Plumbe rs Union. He worked as a plumber for various firms in the Fox River Val ley, with the last 8 working years as a Plumbing Inspector. In additi on to working at the trade, he also taught apprentice plumbers through F ox Valley Technical College in Appleton. He held a Masters License a nd a Designers License, and did some free-lance plumbing designing aft er retirement. While his children were growing up, he did religious ins truction at St. Margaret Mary, Neenah. Charlie was also an adult memb er of the Girl Scouts, installing and maintaining plumbing at Chalk Hil ls Camp near Wausaukee. He completed part of his training toward becomi ng a Deacon of the Catholic Church. Charlie assisted his parishes with pas toral duties, such as visiting the sick and distributing Holy Communion at Ma ss and to home bound parishioners. After his retirement, he lived at Ce cil, Wisconsin, for 8 years, where he was active at St. Martin Church a nd did political activities with the Wisconsin Coalition for the Aging. Ch arlie worked with a creative writing group, publishing a number of stor ies and he self-published his war memoirs titled, "Spam Again." He also had a few supporting roles in plays at t he Mielke Theater in Shawano. Survivors include his wife of 59 years; h is daughters, Rita T. (Michael) Shores, Green Bay; Nancy W. (Robert) Ma rgraf, Green Bay; and Barbara J. Weber, West Milwaukee; his sons, Phill ip M. (Patricia) Weber, Sherwood; and Carl J. (Barbara A.) Weber, Gre en Bay; his grandchildren, Sarah (Todd) Minten, Mathias Weber (fiancee Jennifer West); Joel Weber, Julie Webe r, Jennifer (Scott) Vandeleest, Rebecca Margraf; and his two great-gran dchildren, Skye Anna Vandeleest and Joseph Minten; and his sister, Vero na Van Schijndel, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, Appleton. He was born De cember 25th, 1920 into Kaukauna, the son of the late Mathias and Anna (Rom enesko) Weber. Herb graduated from Kaukauna high-school in 1939. Duri ng and after high school he had been employed by a malt shop in Kaukaun a. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in European theater with a 95 th Infantry Division and was the recipient of the Bronze star. Herb marri ed Edith Mae Kirk on June 29th, 1946. He started Webers Furnace works a nd operated that business until retirement. Henry J. 'Bud' West
88, Appleton, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on Tues. July 22, 2014 at the American Grand in Kaukauna. He was born Sept. 20, 1925 in Appleton to Joseph and Catherine (Weber) West. Bud served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII from 1942 -45. He was a member of the American Legion Post #38 in Appleton. Bud married Jeanne Nowak in Escaudain, France on May 15, 1945 and she preceded him in death on May 13 of this year. He and Jeanne raised their family in Appleton and were charter members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. He worked as an insurance salesman for many years retiring in 1985.
Bud enjoyed deer hunting with family, fishing, playing cards and was an avid Packer fan.

Our Heavenly Father and our Dad came down and put their arms around mom and took her home. Arlene Mary Ann (West) Rogers went to her heavenly reward on Saturday, May 31, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 9, 1927 in Appleton, daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (Weber) West, 1 of six children. She lived her entire life in Appleton. She attended St. Joseph's grade school and graduated from Appleton High School (West) in 1945. She married the love of her life Thomas W. Rogers, Sr on August 17, 1946. Whenever they went for a walk you would see them holding hands. They celebrated 60 wonderful years together in August of 2006. Tom passed away September 28th of that year.
She worked as a teenager at the Appleton Theater. Arlene worked 21 years selling shoes at Bohl and Maeser's, as secretary in St. Elizabeth Hospital ER, retiring from Appleton Pharmacy. Arlene and Tom spent over 20 years taking vacations with their family renting a cottage on Shawano Lake. They also spent over 30 years camping at a Shawano campground making lifelong friends. Many nights were spent around the bonfire until the early morning hours. After retirement they spent a number of winters in Florida (starting 1995) and then in Texas (starting 2002). They had their happiest times when they were with their kids and grandkids.
Arlene is survived by her eight children, David (Suzanne) Rogers, Appleton, Robert (Diane) Rogers, Appleton, Mary Kay (Jerry) Deering, Brownsville, Texas, Brittney (Jerry) Phillips, Oshkosh, Karen (Keith) Kaphingst, Oconomowoc, Richard (Lynn) Rogers, Appleton, Thomas (Tammy) Rogers Jr, Appleton, James Rogers, Red Granite. She is further survived by 21 grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Rachael, Teri, Jamie, Steffenie, Heather, Chaz, Dustin, Brent, Angel, Dana, Pamela, Brian, Katherine, Elizabeth, Tim, Travis, Tera, Jessica and Kristi. Also 48 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Kenneth A. Weber, age 72, of Menasha, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, with his dedicated family and friends at his side at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was born on November 4, 1935, son of the late Louis and Elizabeth (Thuecks) Weber. Ken attended Appleton schools and graduated from Appleton West in 1954. He attended Milwaukee School of Engineering for two years. Ken was united in Holy Matrimony to Mary C. Schimek on September 12, 1959; together they raised five wonderful children: Tony, Linda, Paul, Scott, and Vicki. Ken and his family owned and operated Ken Weber Interiors, which was previously known as Heiman Furniture. Ken's life changed significantly in 1991 after the death of his son Paul at the young age of 27 due to brain cancer and his own open-heart surgery. He continued spending as much time with family as he could. They went on family vacations to Colorado, annual fishing trips to Canada, and especially loved the hunting trips with Lee Stevens and Tom Watry. They also hunted deer in "The Burg" Ogdensburg. Ken also went traveling abroad and went on cruises with friends where he had the opportunity to develop his skills of architecture and design. He had a wonderful gift of telling jokes and stories to anyone that would listen. His love and passion of photography was evident through endless family photo albums.
Ken is survived by his family, Mary C. Weber; his children: Tony (MaryLouise) Weber and their children: Tony Ray and Karly; Linda (Jim) Brown and their son Craig; Scott F. (Natalia) Weber; Vicki (Cornelius) Holt; and a special friend, Kathy; many pets; a brother, Victor (Julie) Weber; sisters-in-law: Carla (Chicky) Weber and Jane Weber; and many nieces, nephews; close friends: Dennis Schwersenska and Gary Wieden, with whom he looked forward to having his weekly lunches.
Ken was preceded in death by his son Paul; a sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Clem Wallace; a brother, Eugene Weber; and a sister, Audrey Weber.
For the past three years, Ken enjoyed living at Lakeside Commons in Menasha, where he was popular with the residents and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Martens-Laemmrich Funeral Home, 312 Milwaukee Street, Menasha, with Deacon Jerry Cross officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
Ken's family wishes to thank his doctors and nurses for giving him a quality of life to the very end and with their dedication to health care for the living.

Ruth A. Leahy, age 76, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, February 26, in Kimberly, Wisconsin. Ruth was born to the late Sylvester and Verona (Weber) Van Schyndel on March 31, 1937 in Appleton, Wisconsin. She attended school in Appleton at St. Joe's grade school, Appleton West High School, and St. Agnes School of Nursing, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse and worked at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. In 1958 she moved to Long Beach California, and worked at Veteran's Memorial Hospital. It was in Long Beach that she met her loving husband Francis "Frank" Leahy. They married on April 19, 1960 and have spent 53 years together. They returned to Appleton where Ruth continued her career at Appleton Medical Center for 26 years. Ruth loved gardening, knitting, hosting dinner and parties. She loved playing golf and said that she was "never good at it, but the sociability was worth every bad stroke." Even the hole in one was played with an orange ball. She maintained very close friendships with life-long friends in the Appleton area, California, and in Good Year, Arizona where many warm winter memories were made.
She is survived by her husband, Frank, Kimberly, five children and eleven grandchildren, Ann (David) Hovell and their family, Andrew and Matthew, Kimberly; Steve (Meg Kidd) Leahy, Prattville, Alabama, and their family, Peter and Macaira; Karen (Dan) Suminski, Franklin, and their family Erin, David and Sean; Peter Leahy, New London, and family, Michael and Zachary Leahy; Bob (Shellie Blum) Leahy, New London, and their family Mackenzie and Dylan. Ruth is further survived by one sister, Phyllis (Floyd "Gabe") Gabrielson, Appleton and one brother, Joseph (Kathleen "Kit") Van Schyndel, Grand Chute and many nieces and nephews.

Joseph Sylvester Van Schyndel, age 74, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2014 after a long struggle with COPD. Joe was born April 26, 1940 to late Sylvester and Verona (Weber) Van Schyndel. He married Kathleen Farris on August 22, 1964 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.
Joe was CEO and second generation owner of Badger Metals, Inc. (distributor of heating and air conditioning equipment). Joe was proud of his service as a trustee of the Xavier Catholic School System (formerly known as ACES/Xavier) and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Blue Hawk Buying Cooperative. He served in many capacities on the Councils of all of the Catholic Parishes he belonged to. Joe was involved in many different volunteer organizations. He was a member of Ridgeway Country Club for many years, and enjoyed golfing, playing cards and games and traveling, especially trips to Las Vegas with friends and family.
Joe is survived by his wife of fifty years Kit, his five children - Debby (Joe) Welch, Joanne (Jim) Coates, Victoria (Ross) Chisholm, Sue Van Schyndel and Jack (Jennifer) Van Schyndel; thirteen wonderful grandchildren - Cassie and Josh Welch, Alex and Zach Coates, Katie, Sammy and Ryan Chisholm, Jacob Renard-Ver Voort, Chase, Max and Leo Ver Voort, Nicholas and Carson Van Schyndel; his sister Phyllis Gabrielson; his brothers-in-law Floyd (Gabe) Gabrielson and Frank Leahy; and many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Ruth Leahy.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am on Friday, September 5, 2014, at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence Street, Appleton with Fr. Jim Leary officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 8:30am until the time of service. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute.

Nancy Wallace, age 55, of Appleton, was born into eternal life on February 2, 2013 with her family at her side. She fought a hard and courageous battle with Cancer. She was born on June 23, 1957, in Appleton, the daughter of the late Clem and Gerry (Weber) Wallace.
Over the course of her 28 year career with head start as a parent advocate Nancy was a tremendous resource for her coworkers, and undoubtedly positively impacted many lives of the families she participated in as a result of her work, doing so with genuine love and respect.
She enjoyed taking long walks with friends and family, often in preparation for her participation in local half marathons and had fulfilling trips throughout the years most notable to Yellowstone National Park, Colorado and Graceland. Her time spent baking and specifically her famous cookies where enjoyed by many.
Nancy Wallace will be sadly missed by her son, Jeremy Wallace and his girlfriend Christina Capasso Brothers: Patrick Wallace (friend Sharon Smith), Tom (Laurie) Wallace, Don (Alison) Wallace; Sisters: Kathy (Steve) Kolosso, Jane (Dave) Roovers, Sharon (Steve) Wachtendonk, Carol Heup, Jackie (Dennis) Sanderfoot; Nephews: Jason (Staci) Wallace, Andy (Amanda) Wallace, Adam Wachtendonk, Ben Sanderfoot, Nic Sanderfoot, Alex Wallace, Tony Wallace and Tyler Heup; Nieces: Maggie (Ben) Foreman, Emily Wachtendonk, Jenni Heup, Brittni Wallace, Katie Sanderfoot, Julia Heup, Beth Sanderfoot and Anna Wallace.

DOVER, Del. - The death Monday of Army Sgt. Nikolas Mueller of Little Chute in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan was a loss for the country as well as his family, President Barack Obama told Mueller's parents, brother and sister-in-law on Thursday.
Obama met individually with Mueller's family and the relatives of 14 other deceased U.S. soldiers at Dover Air Force Base, Del., in a visit to the base where fallen Americans are returned to the United States.
Mueller, 26, was the helicopter's crew chief, said Elizabeth Lahti of Appleton, whose daughter, Stefanie, is married to Mueller's brother, John.
Mueller will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., alongside a fellow soldier killed earlier in the war, Lahti said.
A memorial service is being planned for early next week at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Combined Locks.
Following his visit, Obama said losses like those sustained on Monday are "something I think about each and every day.
"It was a sobering reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices that our young men and women in uniform are engaging in every single day, not only our troops, but their families as well."

MILWAUKEE - A Wisconsin Army sergeant was aboard a helicopter that crashed in Afghanistan this week, killing him and nine other Americans, his parents said Tuesday.
Sgt. Nickolas A. Mueller, 26, of Little Chute was a member of the U.S. Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment and a crew chief on a Chinook helicopter.
Mueller died doing what he loved and left behind a family and girlfriend who are intensely proud of his sacrifice, parents Larry and Sharon Mueller told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
"This was something that he wanted to do, that he needed to do," Larry Mueller said. "We were behind him 100 percent."
The Pentagon said the helicopter crashed Monday while returning from the scene of a firefight with suspected Taliban drug traffickers. In a separate crash Monday, four more troops were killed when two helicopters collided over southern Afghanistan.
U.S. military officials insisted neither crash was believed a result of hostile fire, although the Taliban claimed they shot down a U.S. helicopter in the western province of Badghis. The U.S. did not say where in western Afghanistan its helicopter went down, and no other aircraft were reported missing.
The Defense Department did not immediately confirm that Mueller was on board. But Mueller's parents said they were awoken just after midnight Tuesday by three fellow members of the 160th regiment.
"We had a feeling all day because Nick did not call," Sharon Mueller said. "I went to bed thinking, 'No news is good news, Nick's OK.' Then there was the knock on door."
She paused and then exhaled.
"I'll never forget them three guys standing on my porch," she said softly. "I thought Nick would never die."
Nick Mueller always wanted to be a fighter pilot, the mother said. Even when he was little he decorated his room with a military theme, including pictures of fighter jets.
If there were any doubts about his career plans, they were erased by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"He wanted in and we supported him," Sharon Mueller said. "A mother always wants to feel her children are safe, but I supported him because Nick wanted that. I thought to myself I would never let him know how afraid I was."
Mueller was outgoing and gregarious, someone who enjoyed debating with his teachers, his mother said. If he had something to say, he would say it, she said.
He graduated in 2002 from Little Chute High School, where he played football and ran track. But his mother said it was in wrestling that he excelled - dominating an opponent who outweighed him by 55 pounds during one matchup.
Sharon Mueller said her son would be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. She said it was too early to say when memorial services would be held.
"Nick always thought of other people. With him everybody came first," she said. "He was a very, very giving person. I think that's what people will remember."

LITTLE CHUTE - A Fox Valley soldier has lost his life in Afghanistan. Sergeant Nickolas Mueller of Little Chute died Monday when the helicopter he was in crashed also killing 9 other people on board.
Mueller's family says he had re-enlisted in the Army twice. Mueller's father said his son was a soldier above all. His mother says he was very proud, loved what he did, and loved life. She also says he always loved helping people and was "one of a kind."
Mueller was 26 years old, had been in the army for 5 years, and had planned to stay for life. He was part of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment . He was crew chief, and planned to become pilot of a Chinook helicopter.
His family says he died Monday when his helicopter went down in Afghanistan. The Pentagon has yet to officially confirm Mueller was aboard, but says a helicopter crashed while returning from the scene of a firefight with suspected Taliban drug traffickers.
Sgt. Nickolas Mueller grew up in Little Chute and graduated from Little Chute High School in 2002. According to his mother, in school he liked to debate with the teachers, and she proudly noted he was the homecoming king. She also says since grade school, Mueller had planned to join the army.
Mueller's mother also says he hadn't been home for Christmas since joining the army, but had planned to be home this Christmas.
Funeral details are not available yet, but plans are are for Mueller to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery , his mother said that is what he wanted.

Sgt. Nickolas A. Mueller, formerly of Little Chute, age 26, died Monday, October 26, 2009, in Afghanistan. He was born in Appleton on June 21, 1983, to Larry and Sharon (West) Mueller. Nick graduated from Little Chute High School in 2002. While there, he participated in the wrestling, football and track programs. Nick also played saxophone with the Little Chute High School Band and was in the choir and drama club for 2 years. He was voted Homecoming King in 2001. Nick enlisted in the Army on June 27, 2004, to pursue his love of flying and was stationed at Hunter Air Field in Savannah, Georgia. While his first love was flying, Nick also enjoyed riding his motorcycle.
Nick was loved by everyone. He always put others first.
Nickolas is survived by his parents, Larry and Sharon Mueller of Little Chute; brother, John (Stefani) Mueller, Combined Locks; special friend, Heather Huckett; niece and nephew, Audrey and Jaxon; maternal grandparents, Henry "Bud" and Jeannine West; and uncles and aunts: John Mueller, Barb (Vaughn) Knuth, Anne (Rollie) Kiesow, Donna Kohls, Joe (Nat) West, Linda Gleason and Mike (Dawn) West. He is further survived by other relatives and many friends.
Nickolas was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Nickolas and Julia Mueller; uncle, Richard Kohls; and infant aunt, Shirley West.
Visitation will be held at LITTLE CHUTE HIGH SCHOOL (1402 Freedom Rd.) on Saturday, November 7, 2009, from 10 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. The funeral will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Timothy Krick officiating. After the funeral, full military rites will be conducted by the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258. Committal Arlington National Cemetery. Mueller's body was returned to the U.S. following a helicopter crash that killed him and nine others Monday in Afghanistan.
Mueller, of Little Chute, was returned to Dover Air Force base in Delaware. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery after a memorial service in Savannah, Ga., for the fallen soldiers of 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which is based at Hunter Army Air Field near the coastal Georgia city.
In addition to the soldiers killed in the crash that claimed Mueller's life, four others who were killed in a separate helicopter crash Monday also were returned to U.S. soil, and Obama met privately with relatives of each of those killed.
"The president talked to each of the families, saying he was very sorry for their loss, but that this loss was also a loss for the country and the country mourned their son's passing," said Elizabeth Lahti of Appleton, whose daughter is married to Mueller's brother.
Lahti's daughter, Stefanie, and her husband, John, accompanied Mueller's parents, Sharon and Larry Mueller, to Dover Air Force Base.
Lahti said Nickolas Mueller's unit, also known as the Night Stalkers, provides helicopter aviation support, mostly at night, for special operations forces. Five of the seven soldiers killed in Monday's crash were Night Stalkers, Lahti said.
The three others who died were Drug Enforcement Agency agents.
The crashes Monday that killed 18 Americans made it the deadliest day for the U.S. in Afghanistan in four years.
Obama's trip to welcome home the fallen was not announced. He landed in a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter and immediately strode to the chapel where the grieving families awaited the arrival of their loved ones.
After his visit to Dover, Obama said losses like those the country suffered Monday are "something I think about each and every day."
"It was a sobering reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices that our young men and women in uniform are engaging in every single day, not only our troops, but their families as well," Obama said.
Obama is in the midst of a review to determine the course of U.S. strategy in Afghanistan. At least 815 members of the American military have died in Afghanistan or neighboring countries as a result of the invasion in late November 2001.
The Defense Department has not publicly released the names of those killed in the helicopter crashes. Lahti said relatives were told the names are being withheld pending positive identification of the remains.
The crash that killed Mueller was caused when the helicopter, flying in poor visibility caused by dust from its blades, hit a structure, according to a Web site operated by the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force in Afghanistan.

LITTLE CHUTE - Thousands of people came to Little Chute High School on Saturday to honor fallen soldier Sgt. Nickolas Mueller in a six-hour visitation and funeral.

Mueller, 26, a Little Chute native and member of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan Oct. 26.
On the sunny, warm day that was more a glimmer of summer than late fall, Mueller was remembered as a funny, outgoing man who worked hard, loved being a soldier and was entirely selfless.
The percentage of the crowd who knew Mueller, his parents or extended family appeared great.
"Most of them we do know," said Mueller's mother, Sharon. "But then some come up and say, 'You don't know me, but we just have to be here.'"
"The strength you get from the people coming through is unimaginable," said Larry Mueller, Nick's father.
Women arrived with plates of homemade bar cookies, covering four large tables in the school's cafeteria. Even the high school wrestling club, one of Mueller's passions, sent a floral arrangement.
The line of those who wanted to express condolences stretched the length of the field house. In the last hour, the line doubled, extending past the doorway emblazoned with the motto "Accept your limitations, then go beyond" to the school's front doors.
It appeared the entire village of 11,000 people was in mourning. Even if they didn't know him personally, he was treated like a brother, friend or son.
"If one is lost, they're lost to everybody," said Pat Nagan, of Appleton, a member of the Patriot Guard Riders, who didn't know Nick Mueller personally. "It's a local boy done good. He was the kind of son any parent would want."
The riders group was formed by veterans to show support to families who lose loved ones. "We have lost over 100 now in Iraq and Afghanistan from Wisconsin," said senior ride captain Michael Weaver, of Kaukauna.
Mueller's father, Larry, also a Patriot Guard Rider, was grateful to see riders come out in full force and hold flags by the high school's entrance. "Whenever I did this, I knew it meant something. But being on this end of it … they'll never know what they actually mean."
Mueller praised Friends at the visitation praised Mueller's selflessness.
"He was the shirt-off-his-back kind of guy," said Michael Sherwood, of Combined Locks, remembering his friend since sixth grade. "He was there for you when you were down. Everybody should know him. He's the friend you'd want to have."
Mueller's girlfriend Heather Huckett flew in from Savannah, Ga., to meet the Mueller family for the first time this past week.
"He was probably the funniest guy I ever met," she said. "He had a really big heart. He loved with his whole heart."
They'd met in Savannah when she visited her little brother who was in the same Night Stalkers military unit as Mueller.
"The first time I met him, all he said to me was he liked my potato salad," Huckett remembered. She said she had an immediate crush on him and moved to Savannah. "I asked him out," she recalled.
Even though she knew he was doing what he wanted to do, the loss is devastating.
"We had so many plans," she said. "You don't expect this when you're young."
Governor visits
Gov. Jim Doyle came to speak privately with the Mueller family before the visitation started at 10 a.m. Saturday.
"He said how sorry he was and how close it hit," Sharon said.
After that, the steady stream of people didn't let up until the funeral started at 4 p.m. against the backdrop of a two-story American flag, bagpiper and Little Chute High School choir. It began with a silent procession of veterans, police, soldiers from the 395th and 21 members of the Little Chute Fire Department. Staff Sgt. Caleb Baugh, of Savannah, Ga., choked back tears as he gave a eulogy commemorating his friend's sense of humor and hard work.
Rev. Tim Krick, of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Combined Locks, pointed out that a Facebook page honoring Mueller had 1,500 members sign up in a matter of days.
"This tells you everything you need to know about Nick. He cared for others and others cared for him."
At the end, with the waning light of the day, Mueller was honored with military rites conducted by the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258 of Little Chute, which included a three-volley salute, taps and a folded flag presented to his mother.
Mueller's remains were not in Little Chute, but will be laid to rest Nov. 16 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., according to his wishes. Online condolences may be sent through oconnellfuneralservices.com.

Thomas West, age 28, of Neenah, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. He was born on March 15, 1985 in Appleton, the son of Michael and Dawn (Miller) West. Tom loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He looked forward to playing his guitar and listening to music. Tom liked the simple things in life, be it playing with the dogs, getting together for family gatherings, or hanging out with friends. He had a huge heart and was always thinking of others.
Tom will be sadly missed by his parents, Michael and Dawn West; sisters: Nicole (special friend Joel) Remmel and Amanda (Nick) Dercks; nieces and nephews: Ethan DeWall, Alex and Alivia Remmel; Ethan and Spencer Dercks, William West; grandparents: Donna (Thomas) Miller and Jeanne (Henry "Bud") West; aunts and uncles: Anne (Roland) Kiesow, Donna Kohls, Joseph (Natalee) West, Linda Gleason, Sharon (Larry) Mueller, Daniel (Alice) Miller, Dale (Sue Rae) Miller, Darla (Col. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Raymond Georgen, Dr. Phillip Yazbak, and the ICU nurses at Theda Clark Medical Center, especially Jean and Erin.
