KAUKAUNA ITEMS - The funeral of Mrs. Richard McCARTHY who passed away at St.Elizabeth's Hospital at Appleton Tuesday morning will take place Saturd ay morning at 9o'clock from Holy Cross church, Rev. Father LOCHMAN officiating. The remai ns will be interred in St. Joseph's cemetery at Appleton.
Mrs. McCARTHY was the wife of City Treasurer R. H. McCARTY and was 28 year sold. She had been a resident of Kaukauna for a number of years and was wel lknown in the city. She is survived by her husband, her parents, Mr. and Mr s. JohnMERKEL, of Grand Chute and one brother, Henry of Appleton.

Obituary:
Nick W. Klein, age 85, died on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, while visiting Escanaba, MI. Nick was born in Appleton on September 7, 1925, to the late Nicholas and Gretta (Merkel) Klein. He graduated from Appleton High School with the class of 1943. After graduation, Nick proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines during WWII in the First Marine Division, Second Marine Air Wing. He participated in the first invasion of Peleliu and Okinawa. After he completed his military service, he attended Lawrence University where he received his BA in Economics.
In 1954, he was united in marriage to Carol Miller at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton. The couple has enjoyed 57 years together. He was a lifetime member of the Military Order of Cooties at Appleton VFW Post 2778, and was also a lifetime member of American Legion Post #38 in Appleton. He has been a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church for many years. Nick enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting the casinos, and spending time with his family.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Carol, Appleton; daughter Kathleen "Katie" Michalkiewicz, San Angelo, TX; 2 sons: Nick R. (Kathleen) Klein, Appleton and Kurt W. (Karen) Klein, Darboy; 4 grandchildren: Dawn (Aaron), Nick A. (Angela), Kyle W., and Kelli J. Klein; 6 great-grandchildren: Thea Klein, Kenneth Gutzman, Nick J., Samuel H., Benjamin J. and Allison M. Klein; Sister-in-law, Mary Klein, Appleton. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard, and 2 brothers-in-law: Marius and Raymond Miller.
A Memorial Service for Nick will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 10, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel, followed by full military honors performed by Appleton VFW Post 2778. Marie Griesbach, age 101, formerly of Appleton, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at Century Oaks - Westridge, Menasha. Marie was born on January 31, 1906, in Marshfield, to the late Louie and Lena (Buss) Merkel. She married Joseph C. Griesbach in 1925; he preceded her in death on January 3, 1967. Marie and Joseph farmed for many years on their homestead on Capitol Drive in Appleton. She was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, enjoyed dancing and was especially fond of her strawberry patch.
Survivors include her daughter Shirley Brooks (Oscar Rodriguez), Menasha; her son, Marvin (Myrna) Griesbach, Appleton, 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elaine (Isadore) Reis, and her son, Melvin (Audrey) Griesbach; her grandchildren, Barbara Wenzel and Donald Griesbach, and her great granddaughter Jennifer Wenzel; her sister, Mildred Griesbach and her brother Ivan (Ethel) Merkel.

Eva L. Plamann, age 94 of Appleton, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. She was born on July 5, 1921 in the Town of Grand Chute to the late Hurbert and Gretchen (Schwalbach) Merkel. On April 27, 1946, Eva married Herbert Plamann at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Pius X and volunteered with the church mission, Eva was formerly employed with Kimberly Clark in the office with the Badger-Globe Mill. She enjoyed traveling, bowling and camping but most important to her was her family.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Herbert, nine children; Patricia (Tom) Lamon, Conover, WI, Catherine (Robert) Vondracek, Sherwood, WI, Mary Derks, Appleton, Linda (Warren) Haser, Bellville, WI, James (Linda) Plamann, Little Chute, John Plamann, Appleton, Sue Honkomp, Appleton, Thomas Plamann, Shawano, and Judy (Mark) Mattingly, Appleton. She is further survived by 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Eva is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Leona (Lawrence) Presteen and Emmaline (Cyril) Fisher, son in law, George Honkomp and granddaughters, Amy Griesbach and Josette Derks, and grandson, Joseph Derks.
A funeral mass for Eva will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, October 19, 2015 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with Fr. Thomas J. Farrell officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 9:00 am until the time of service at the church. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton.

Elda E. Muench, Appleton, age 82, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2007, at Cherry Meadows, with her family at her side. Elda was born on March 30, 1925, in Appleton to the late Edward and Agnes (Diener) Merkel. She was a 1943 graduate of Appleton High School. On September 28, 1946, she was united in marriage to Charles Muench at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and they recently celebrated 60 wonderful years together. After Elda raised her family she was a dedicated part-time employee for Sears from 1974 until 1987. Elda and Charlie enjoyed quarterly pot-lucks with the D-40 club. In addition to spending time with her family, Elda enjoyed knitting, baking, gardening, watching the Packers, and traveling with her family.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Charles; her children: Linda (Bill) Watson, Hortonville; Shirley (RJ) Miracle, Papillion, NE; Dick Muench, Larsen; Diane Muench, Greenville; Mary (Jack) Effertz, Darboy; Dan (Jill) Muench, Appleton; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; step-brothers: Harley (Audrey) Tierney, Appleton; Jim (Anne) Tierney, Wisconsin Rapids; sister-in-law, Betty Buchholtz, Waupaca, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was born on Feb. 23, 1913, in the Town of Greenville, daughter of the late Joseph & Emily (Bolte) Merkel. On Nov. 3, 1933, she married Leon Schuh in Appleton. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1993. Marcella lived in New London most of her life and was recently a resident of St. Joseph's in New London. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Readfield.
She is survived by two daughters, Audrey (Al) Metko, Appleton; and Marilyn (Curt) Sommer, New London; two sons, Jerome (Joann) Schuh, Appleton; and Roger (Joyce) Schuh, Readfield; two sons-in-law, Wilmar Kalbus, Readfield; and Edward Worm, New London; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor Buss, Appleton; Lucille Schroeder, Kaukauna; and Evelyn Muenster, Seymour; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Cooney, New London. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Evelyn J. Muenster, 87, Seymour, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Appleton Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 17, 1921, to the late Joe and Emilie (Bolte) Merkel. Daughter of a cheesemaker, she married the late Elmo Muenster in June of 1946 and moved to the farm on County C. She worked for Holidays in Seymour for several years and Seymour Canning for a couple of summers.
In 1990, Evelyn and Elmo retired from farming and moved to Appleton, allowing them to do a little traveling. After Elmo's passing, Evelyn moved to Black Creek and later to Meadow Wood in Seymour. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and a good game of Sheepshead. Evelyn was also a member of Freedom Moravian Church and the Friendly Services Circle of the Church.
Survivors include a son, James (Ginger) Muenster; two sisters, a bother-in-law and a sister-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo; one sister, three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
Friends may call at Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, from 6 p.m. until services at 8 p.m. with the Reverend Jason Andersen officiating and entombment at Highland Memorial Park.

Vicki Kuchelmeister, age 60, of Kaukauna, passed away on Wednesday evening, September 7, 2011. Vicki was born in Appleton on April 27, 1951, daughter of the late William and Jeanette (Spaulding) Kuchelmeister. As a young woman, Vicki worked at a beauty shop in Appleton. Later, she worked at Integrity Mutual Insurance in Appleton. Her most recent work was in the deli at Festival Foods in Appleton. There she loved her job, her co-workers, and her customers. She was so happy to be part of the Festival Family! Vicki was fond of crafting, and especially enjoyed crochet, sewing, knitting, and music. She was an important volunteer at the Community Benefit Tree, and been helping out there since her family founded the organization nearly twenty years ago.
Vicki is survived by two sisters: Karla Wolfinger of Kaukauna and Lei Otte of Weyauwega; two brothers: Scott (Sue) Kuchelmeister of Kaukauna and Todd (Juliet) Kuchelmeister of Appleton; a sister-in-law: Joey Kuchelmeister of Greensboro, North Carolina; an aunt: Dolores Kuchelmeister; eleven nieces, eleven nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. Vicki was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Jim Kuchelmeister, brothers-in-law Larry Wolfinger and Jim Otte, and a nephew Greg Otte.
The Funeral Liturgy for Vicki will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 12, 2011 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna. Fr. John Bergstadt and Msgr. Jim Vanden Hogen will concelebrate. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM and again at the church on Monday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the liturgy.

Shirley Brooks, age 80, of Menasha, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 17, 2015. She was born on June 20, 1934 in Grand Chute to the late Joseph C. and Marie R. (Merkel) Griesbach. Shirley enjoyed crafts, painting, gardening, and shopping. She looked forward to trips to the casino, traveling to The Villages Florida, and going to the fair and rodeo. Shirley was fond of animals and her beloved cat Tom was well taken care of. She loved to watch WWE Wrestling on Monday and Friday nights. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Lois Merkel Brown passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CA, after a courageous 18 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loving husband and three daughters. She was 74 years old.
Born August 11, 1932, in Appleton, Wisconsin, Lois was the first child of Ivan and Ethel Merkel. She grew up in Appleton and attended St. Therese Middle School and Appleton High School where she graduated in 1950. Lois married Paul R. Brown on October 13, 1956. After marriage, Lois worked at the University of Illinois while Paul attended the college. After his graduation, they moved to Akron, New York where they resided until 1979, when they relocated to Walnut Creek.
Lois was a dedicated and nurturing mother who focused on raising her three daughters. She was the best mom and had a way of always making you feel very special.
After raising her children, Lois returned to work. She was employed at Aetna as an Executive Administrative Assistant for over 22 years prior to retiring in 2001.
Lois is survived by her beloved husband, Paul R. Brown and daughters: Julie Brown (Bridges Stewart), Karen (Anthony) Garcia and Sheila (David) Kilgore; along with her grandchildren: Nikki, Garrett, Emilio, Mateo and Dominic. She is also survived by sisters, Carol (Boyd) Grimmer and Debra (Pete) Loughrin; sisters-in-law, Connie Merkel and Mary Alice Merkel; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Ivan and Ethel Merkel; and her brothers, Gary Merkel and Ronald Merkel.
Lois was very proud to have recently celebrated her 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Lois loved spending time with her grandchildren who called her Grammie. She also had a love of scrap booking, counted cross stitch, reading and loons.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

David Meyer, age 67, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Appleton on January 18, 2013. David was born in Appleton on November 14, 1945, son of the late Julius and Elaine (Merkel) Meyer. He was a graduate of Xavier High School, and eventually became a Private Investigator. On August 1, 1966, he married the love of his life, Linda Locke. Linda preceded him in death in 2005. Over the years he worked at American Can as a technical engineer, had a tax preparation business, and worked in his own private investigation business. David also authored and published a book, "The Downfall of Civilization."
Everyone will remember David for his love of hunting, fishing, cooking, his inventive spirit, barbecues, and Miller Lite. He was also a fan of Elvis, and even attended his funeral.
David is survived by his children:
Lisa Meyer (Saad Azab) and grandchildren Matthew, Holly, Kelly (great-granddaughter Lilahanne), and Michael Grover;

Obituary:
Mrs. Arnold E. Brecklin, Jr., 34, of 1611 W. Franklin street, died at 6 a.m. today at home of an acute coronary attack. The fire department rescue squad was called, but she was dead when it arrived. She was born in Greenville Dec. 31, 1924, and lived in the Appleton area all her life. She was a member of the VFW auxiliary and the EMBA auxiliary of the Wisconsin Michigan Power company. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic church, with burial in Highland Memorial park. Friends may call at the Brettschneider Funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday until services. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Survivors include the widower; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Jochman, route 1, Appleton; two daughters, Barbara and Mary, at home; one son, Bruce, at home; three brothers, David, Alfred and Robert Jochman, all of Appleton, and five sisters, Mrs. Willard Last, Muscatine, Iowa, Mrs. Donald Kempen, Kimberly, Mrs. Lloyd Brantmeier and Mrs. William Anderson, both of Menasha, and Miss Nancy Jochman, Appleton.

Appleton - David Leonard Jochman, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home with family at his side, on Thursday, March 15, 2018. David was born on August 1, 1927 in Greenville, WI, to the late John and Mary Jochman. When David was 20 years old, he fulfilled his dream of going out West to work in the fields.
In 1950 David proudly joined the Army, where he served three years in the Korean War earning the Combat Infantry Badge. David and his son Jerry, were fortunate to experience together the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2014.
David met the love of his life, Barbara, and together they were blessed with 61 wonderful years of marriage. Barbara preceded him in death on March 24, 2017.
He was employed by Central Paving/MCC for thirty-six years, retiring in 1995. After retirement he volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul for over 20 years, and was acknowledged with the "Volunteer of the Year Award 2005". He spent countless hours volunteering at St. Therese Parish and was always willing to lend a helping hand to whomever was in need.
David enjoyed spending his time with his family, listening to Polka music and being outdoors.
He is survived by his five children, Cindy Johnson, Kathleen (Gregg) Burkhardt, Pam (Craig) Kuepper, Jerry Jochman and Theresa (Jeffrey) Racine; his five grandchildren, Rebecca (Doug) Mogensen, Christopher Johnson, Justin (Courtney) Kuepper, Ryan Kuepper and Michael Burkhardt; and his great-grandchildren, Emery Mogensen and twins, Milo & Noa Kuepper. David is also survived by three sisters, Esther Kempen, Ruth Brantmeier, and Joyce (Bill) Anderson; four sisters-in-law, Marge Jochman, Joan (Leo) Bernardin, Karen (Ron) Groth and Bonnie Fischer and his brother-in-law, Richard Nichols. He is further survived by many other dear family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; son-in-law, Curtis Johnson; three sisters, Eleanor Brecklin, Helen (Willard) and Nancy Nichols; his two brothers, Robert and Dick (Ruth) and three brothers-in-law, Don Kempen, Lloyd Brantmeier and Tom Fischer.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 213 E. Wisconsin Avenue in Appleton. Visitation will be held the night before on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 starting at 4:00 p.m. until the prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Wichmann Funeral Home. Visitation will resume the next day at the church starting at 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass. Military Honors will follow the Funeral Mass at church. David will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in David's name. Alfred V. Jochman age 80, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2014 after a battle with leukemia. Al was born on July 12, 1934 to the parents of John and Mary (Ellenbecker) Jochman. Al grew up on a farm in Grand Chute and attended Appleton (West) High School before joining the U.S. Army. Following his return from the army, Al married Ruth (Knutson) on August 31, 1955. They made their home in Appleton and raised two children, Richard Jochman and Elizabeth (Jochman) Ebben. They were married for 55 years until Ruth's passing on January 1, 2011. Al worked as an insulator in Local 127 for 28 years and was privileged to enjoy over 21 years of retirement. Al enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, especially trimming trees and cutting firewood. Throughout his life, Al enjoying collecting and viewing antique tractors and cars and attended many car shows. He will be remembered by his friends and neighbors for his willingness to assist in any neighborhood project and for his giving nature and charismatic personality. Alfred is survived by his son Richard Jochman and his wife Julie (Miller) Jochman and their children Hannah and Tyler Jochman, his daughter Elizabeth (Jochman) Ebben, her husband Daniel Ebben and their children Johnathan, Amanda, Christopher and Kaitlynn Ebben. He is also survived by a brother David Jochman (Barbara), sisters Esther Kempen, Ruth Brantmeier, Joyce Anderson (Bill), sister- in- law Margie Jochman and brother- in- law Richard Nichols and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents Al is preceded in death by his wife Ruth (Knutson) Jochman, a brother Robert Jochman, sisters Eleanor Brecklin, Helen Last her husband Willard and Nancy Nichols, brother- in- laws Donald Kempen and Lloyd Brantmeier. He is also preceded in death by a special nephew Bruce Brecklin. A funeral service and visitation will be held Thursday, August 21st, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church, 912 N. Oneida St. Appleton, WI 54911, to commemorate and celebrate Al's life. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m with Reverend Lloyd Luedeman officiating.
Alfred's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. William Conkright, the nurses and staff at Fox Valley Hematology & Oncology, as well as the nursing staff at St. Elizabeth's hospital who assisted in his final care. James "Jim" Reinold Ellenbecker, age 64, of Appleton, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully on Thursday, September 15, 2016, at the Atrium Post-Acute Care of Appleton. Jim was born on November 29, 1951, son of the late Reinold and Donna (Holcomb) Ellenbecker. He attended Appleton West High School and on July 6, 1974, he married the love of his life Loretta Nault. They recently celebrated their 42 year wedding anniversary.
Jim was a jack of all trades and held many jobs throughout the Valley. He enjoyed bowling with the Tavern League at Super Bowl for over 15 years. Jim also enjoyed shooting darts and riding his motorcycle. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and camping; especially sharing a good story around the camp fire with family and friends. Holidays were special to Jim. Anytime family and friends would gather, he was happy.
Jim is survived by his loving wife: Loretta Ellenbecker; their children: Scott (Tina) Nault, Jessie (Heather) Ellenbecker and Dennis (Natasha) Ellenbecker; twelve grandchildren; his sisters: Terry (John) Patoka and Kathy (Mike) Hawk; his aunts: Arla Helein and Susan Wing; his brother-in-law: Rick (Jody) Nault; nine nieces and nephews; and 10 great nieces and nephews. He is further survived by his special friends: Faith Mueller, Erin (Andrew) Scott, and Corey (Cassie) Mueller and their families. Jim will also be missed by many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents: Bernice and Sidney Holcomb; his mother-in-law and step father-in-law: Rita and Glenn Beckert; his father-in-law: Noel E. Nault, Sr.; brother-in-law: Noel E. Nault, Jr.; his uncle: Donald Helein; and his aunts: Nevah Steele and Ann Poole.
The funeral service for Jim will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 19, 2016, at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 537 N. Superior St. Appleton. Audrey E. Metko, 77, of Appleton passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at her home after a long battle with cancer. Audrey was born on February 17, 1937 to the late Leon and Marcella (Merkel) Schuh. She graduated from New London high school in 1955, and married Al Metko on April 18, 1959.
Audrey was a telephone operator for 5 years, until their children came along. Later she worked for Ray O Vac for 10 years then retired. She loved to dance, cook, and gardening.
Audrey is survived by her children; Maria Peterson, her children Mariah and Maverick, and her granddaughter Eden; Joseph (Cara) Metko, their children Joshua ( Katie), Stacey (Jason), Beran and their granddaughter Ava; Eugene ( Danita) Metko and his daughter Karissa and Danita's sons Matt and Nick; Vicki (Andy) Edlebeck and their children Jackson, Spencer, and Cody; Mark (Samantha) Metko and their children Muriel, Martin, Charlie, George, and Eden; and Andy (Stephanie) Metko. She is further survived by a sister Marilyn (Curt) Sommer, and brothers; Jerome (JoAnn) Schuh, Roger (Joyce) Schuh, and brother-in-law William Kalbus. Amy Griesbach (Vondracek) 38, Oshkosh, passed away January 1, 2012 as a result of a car accident in Pickerel, WI. She was born on January 13, 1973 in Appleton to Robert and Catherine (Plamann) Vondracek. Amy graduated from Menasha High School in 1991. Amy married Brian Griesbach on April 29, 2005 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Appleton. She worked at Anchor Bank for almost 20 years. She loved the outdoors and traveling anywhere with her loving husband, Brian. They also enjoyed their pets: dog, Daisy; bird, Captain; cats: Jack and Phoebe. She was artistic, enjoying scrapbooking, stamping and being a L' Bri consultant.
Amy was a beautiful, wonderful person who touched the lives of many with her kindness, sensitivity, laughter and love. Her spirit will continue to shine through the memories we hold in our hearts as we trust she is safe in heaven.

Bruce William Brecklin, 59, Appleton, passed away on March 21, 2013 at his home of congestive heart failure. Bruce was born on October 22, 1953 to Arnold and Eleanor (Jochman) Brecklin. Bruce's mother Eleanor died when he was young. He was lucky enough to find a second mother when his father married Ione. He was a 1972 graduate of Appleton West High School. Bruce proudly served his country as a member of the US Army. He was employed with Asplundh Tree Service until his retirement. He found peace and enjoyment in the outdoors, as well as time spent "up north" at Bear Lake. Neighbors and friends will attest to Bruce's willingness to lend a helping hand, no matter the task. He was the perfect example of a loving father and son himself. In his later years, Bruce enjoyed rummaging with his uncle Dick Jochman and the memories he made with his special friend Sonia Anderson. The impact Bruce had on the lives he left behind will forever be remembered, and the man greatly missed.
He is survived by his sons, Brett and Jeff Brecklin, his mother Ione Brecklin, sisters Barbara (David) Plamann and Mary Fuller, brothers George (Robin) Van Zeeland and Andy (Caroline) Brecklin, friend Sonia Anderson, special uncle Dick Jochman as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Beth Brecklin and great neice Elizabeth Plamann.
There will be a gathering in celebration of Bruce's life at Valley Funeral Home on Thursday March 28, 2013 from 5-8 pm. In keeping with Bruce's wishes there will be no funeral service. Online condolences may be expressed at www.valleyfh.com.
