Obituary:
Elmer Walter Helms, 96, of Appleton, died Thursday September 26, 2013 at Fox River Assisted Living. He was born in Appleton, May 23, 1917, son of the late John and Alvina (Yeager) Helms. Elmer married Frances Welhouse on July 26, 1941.
Elmer served his country stateside in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked for Hillshire Farms as a salesman for 28 years, retiring in 1982. Elmer and Frances are members of St. Bernard Catholic Church. Elmer enjoyed being active, he loved playing golf, taking care of his yard, bowling in his younger years, playing cards, and traveling with Frances. Elmer and Frances visited every state during their travels together.
Elmer is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Frances; Their two children; son, Gary, Appleton, and daughter, Pat (Pat) Byrne, Appleton; granddaughter, Kelly (Eric) DeWine, Fremont, and grandson, Shawn (Shelby) Byrne, Madison; and a sister-in-law, Rosella Miller, Kaukauna. He was further preceded in death by four brothers, Ervin, Harvey, Harold, and Robert; two sisters, Rosella, and Ester; and his father and mother-in-law, John and Hattie Welhouse.
A memorial service for Elmer will be 6:00 PM on Wednesday October 2, 2013 at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday beginning at 3:00 PM until the hour of service.
