    Elmer J. Vanden Boogaard, 89, Appleton, died Friday Oct. 2, 2009, at Grand Horizons after a short illness. He was born in Kimberly on July 20, 1920, to the late Henry and Frances (Ver Voort) Vanden Boogaard. While attending Kimberly High School, Elmer lettered in four sports and was offered a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. On July 16, 1945, he married Opal Jensen at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Chicago. Their witnesses were the janitor and the rectory cook. He then returned to his war duties in England. Elmer was a member of the William Verhagen American Legion Post 60 for over 60 years. He was also a member of St. Joseph Parish, Appleton. Elmer was named to the first athletic Hall of Fame at Kimberly High School. Elmer and Opal square danced with the Romeos and Calicos and enjoyed time spent at the family cottage on Nabor Road on Shawano Lake. She preceded him in death April 14, 2007. A strong advocate of Catholic education, Elmer endowed 9 students at Xavier High School. He was a strong philanthropist, especially to St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Green Bay Catholic Diocese.
    Elmer is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Nancy Randall and son Christopher Randall, Shreveport, LA; Carol (Ray) Jermstad, Appleton and daughter Sara (Tim) Andrew and son Joseph and daughter Madeleine, Neenah and sons Nick (Abby Sawyers) Jermstad, Plantsville, CT and Jesse (Dana Larson) Jermstad, Green Bay; Susan (Dan) Bowman, Appleton and daughter Angie Oleszko, Milaca, Minn., and sons Kurt Oleszko, Stevens Point and Russell Oleszko, Minneapolis, Minn.; William Vanden Boogaard, Tucson, Ariz., and sons Adam Vanden Boogaard, US Air Force State of Washington and Matthew Vanden Boogaard, Texas and their mother Lea; Bruce (Barb Bartel) Vanden Boogaard, Fremont; and Jack (Sandra Thompson) Vanden Boogaard, Appleton and sons Alex and Andrew Vanden Boogaard both of Appleton; sisters and brothers: Maxine Wichmann, Kimberly; Maridel (Ed) Prelwitz, Savannah, GA; Paul (Evelyn) Vanden Boogaard, Appleton; and Matt Vanden Boogaard, Kimberly; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Dorothy Vanden Boogaard, Freedom; Kathleen (LaVern) Weishoff, Manitowoc; Wayne Jensen, Montello; Bill Jensen, Florida; and James (Judy) Jensen, Washington. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    In addition to his wife and parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Richard Randall; father and mother-in-law, William and Angie Jensen; brothers and sister, Bernard (Audrey), Vince (Esther) and Robert Vanden Boogaard and Margaret Ester (Norb) Schwab; brothers and sisters-in-law, Otto Wichmann, Marian Vanden Boogaard, Mary Pat and LaVahn (Nadine) Jensen, Joyce Getschow-Walker (Herman and Birnam) and Arbutus (Joe) Kniece.
    Visitation will be held Tuesday Oct. 6, 2009, at ST. JOSEPH PARISH (404 W. Lawrence St. Appleton) beginning at 1:30 p.m. until the time of Mass at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Larry Abler O.F.M. Cap. will officiate. Military rites conducted by the William Verhagen Post 60 will immediately follow. Committal Riverside Cemetery.
