Police crack Grand Chute murder case aft er 37 years Man, 75, charged in 1968 slaying; Dan Wilson, Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers APPLETON - Despite the advances in police technology over the years, it w as simply old-fashioned police shoe leather that cracked a 37-year-old Gra nd Chute murder case.Robert Mitchell, 75, described as a career criminal who most recently h ad been living at an assisted living facility in Cashton in south centr al Wisconsin, was charged Friday afternoon in Outagamie County court wi th first-degree intentional homicide in the 1968 shotgun slaying of Martin Jansen, 34, Appleton.Outagamie County Sheriff Brad Gehring said investigators had to re-intervi ew witnesses and ultimately Mitchell himself recently before they gather ed enough evidence to finally charge Mitchell.
Witness after witness pointed to Mitchell.Police long suspected, almost from the beginning of the case, that Mitche ll was responsible for the Jan. 20, 1968, killing of Jansen, a night watch man at the former Cloud Buick car dealership, 2445 W. College Ave.Despite their suspicions, though, police never had enough evidence to conv ince a district attorney to charge Mitchell. Through long years and the de aths of many of the original investigators, however, the case was never fo rgotten.Gary Barrington, now retired, worked on the case back in 1973. He said pol ice always figured they would one day crack the case."I thought that somewhere down the line there would be a deathbed confessi on or whatever. We never gave up hope," Barrington said.- Dan Wilson writes for The Post-Crescent of Appleton.
