    Obituary:
Ralph W. Moder, 87, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, February 2, 2014. Ralph was born on July 18, 1926, in Appleton, Wisconsin. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1944 and then joined the US Navy. Ralph served aboard a Liberty ship escorting convoys across the ocean during the war. After the war, Ralph used the GI bill to study linotype operation. Following his training, he was hired by the Appleton Post Crescent where he worked for 41 years. In 1948, Ralph married Marguerite Hela. The couple lived in Appleton and raised their six children there.
Ralph's life was one of selflessness. He worked hard even as a very young man to help support his family after the early death of his father. Later, Ralph dedicated himself to supporting his own large family and instilling in his children the values he cherished. "Hobbies?" he'd chuckle. "Oh yes, I've got six of them!" Ralph was a humble man and a generous one. He loved nothing more than to surprise his kids, grandkids, neighbors, and friends with unexpected treats. Ralph had a keen interest in current affairs and a deep compassion for others that extended far beyond the community he lived in.
Survivors include his children: Pat (David) Mertens, Eau Claire, Katy Grogan, Janesville, Mary (Dale) Bahr, West Salem, Nancy Moder, Appleton, Susan (Tim) Pauly, Sherwood, and John (Jody) Moder, Darboy; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren as well as sisters-in-law: Vell Moder, LaVerne Moder, and Alice Gamsky. He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite, sister June, brothers Bob and Glenn, and his son-in-law Michael Grogan.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Sacred Heart Room at Sacred Heart School in Appleton, Wisconsin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E Fremont St, Appleton. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
Ralph's family would like to express appreciation for the loving and professional care he received from Dr. Jeffrey Whiteside, Dr. Jack Anderson, Theda-Care At Home Hospice, and Cherry Meadows Hospice.
