    CORNELIUS JACOB SCHMIT FAMILY
    Cornelius Jacob Schmit was born on June 10, 1880 in Wahoo and came to Butler County at the age of three. He passed away June 23,1949. Cornelius and Martha had four children, Elsie, Viola, Leo and Josephine. Elsie married Leo Cornelius Schmit (1894 to 1954) on September 30, 1940. Leo was one of ten children born to Elizabeth Agnes Steiner (1869 - 1957) who was born in Cascade, Iowa and Nicholas Schmit (1862-1937) who was born in Conach, Luxembourg. Elizabeth's parents were Helena Kramer and Nicolas Steiner. Nicolas' parents were Nicholas and Katherine Schmit who moved to Butler County in 1882 and farmed east of Bellwood until moving to David City on March 1, 1928. Nicholas and Elizabeth's children were Elizabeth, Peter, John, Ann Eleanor, George, Frank, Lena, Laura, Leo.
    Leo married Susan Sand at Spencer Grove, Iowa in November, 1919. To this union two children, LaVerne, (who was killed in a plane crash during a training flight on January 10, 1943 at Bermuda) and Delores were born. Delores married Audrey Kreizinger. They have two sons James, and Joe. James married Marlene Shotkoski from Ord and they have one son, Michael. Susan passed away in 1931. In 1940 Leo married Elsie. To this union six children were born. Robert, the oldest, married Betty Janovy of David City. Their children are Kim, Jeanne, Lee and Lynn. Edward, who isn't married, lives west of Bellwood. Carol married Gary Danaher of David City. Their children are Kelly and Shannon, Wilma married Oscar Heng of Dunhar. Their children are Ann, Mary, Charlie, Beth and Sara. David married Constance Kula of Bellwood and their children are Nichole, Jacquee and Stephanie. Keith, the youngest, married Beth Wieseman of Osceola. Their children are Carrie and Christina.
    Viola married Chris Kamenske. Their children are Carolyn and Judy. Carolyn married Ken Icech. Their children are Chris, Troy and Susan. Judy married Dave Kriz. Their children are Lee and Dean.
    Josephine married Harold Klein. Their children are Donnie, Raymond, Roger, Arthur, Norman and Sandy. Norman and Kathy have two children, Sam and Sara. Sandy married Russell Brandenburgh. Their children are Travis and Trevor. Leo married Wilomine Brochtrup. Their children are James, who isn't married and lives in Milwaukee, Wis., Gerald and Richard Gerald married Barhara McKee. Their children are Susan and Daniel and they live in Alaska. Richard married Janet Tilletson. They have two children, Vicki and Mike.

    Elsie Catherine Schmit, 88, of Bellwood died Friday Dec. 27, 1996 at David Place in David City. Mrs. Schmit was born July 20, 1908 near Bellwood to Cornelius and Martha (Speicher) Schmit. She attended David City High School. On Sept. 30, 1940, she married Leo C. "Shorty" Schmit at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Bellwood. She was a housewife and lived all her life on the home place except for the last two and one half years at David Place. She was a member of the Church, a former member of the P.C.C.W., the W.T.X. and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include four sons, Robert L. and Edward J. both of Bellwood, David W. of David City and Keith J. of Rising City; two daughters, Carol A. Danaher of Broomfield, Colo. And Wilma J. Heng of Dunbar, one stepdaughter, Delores Kreizinger of David City, two sisters Viola Kamanski of Red Oak, Iowa and Josephine Klein of Seward, 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1954, one brother, Leo A. Schmit, one stepson Laverne Schmit in 1943, two step great-grandchildren, Michael and Jill Kreizinger in 1982 and one great granddaughter, Stephanie Culbert.

    Full Obituary: Viola Kamenske, age 9 2, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly of Bellwood, Nebraska passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Viola Margaret Kamenske was born July 2, 1910 in Bellwood, Nebraska the daughter of Cornealius and Martha (Speicher) Schmit. She was raised in the Bellwood, Nebraska area and graduated from David City High School in 1928. She taught country school for a couple of years and later was united in marriage to Chris T. Kamenske on April 10, 1934 in Bellwood, Nebraska. They moved to California until 1946 when they moved back to Bellwood. Chris preceded Viola in death on December 1, 1987. Viola moved to Red Oak in 1991 where she lived at Acorn Acres. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Red Oak and St. Peters Catholic Church in Bellwood, Nebraska where she taught CCD and was a member of the Altar Society. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Chris Kamenske on December 1, 1987; brother: Leo Schmit; and sister: Elsie Schmit. Survivors include 2 daughters: Carolyn Rech and her husband Ken of Red Oak, Iowa; and Judy Kriz and her husband Dave of Spring Hill, Kansas; 5 grandchildren: Chris Rech and his wife Shannon of Emporia, Kansas; Troy Rech and his wife Kim of Roanoke, Virginia; Susan Rech of Ardmore, Oklahoma; Lee Kriz of Olathe, Kansas; and Dean Kriz of Spring Hill, Kansas; 4 great grandchildren: Shelby, Reid, Aubrey, and Grayson Rech; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Saturday, November 16, 2002 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Red Oak with Father James Kleffman, celebrant. A Wake Service will be held 7 PM Friday, November 15, 2002 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with visitation to follow. Graveside services will be held in Bellwood, Nebraska at the Saints Mary and Peter Cemetery at 3 PM on Saturday, November 16, 2002. Memorials may be directed to the charity of your choice. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
