    Hartzheim, VeronaVerona Hartzheim, 91, a longtime resident of Appleton, passed away peacefu lly on Sept. 2, 2004, in Milwaukee. Verona was born in Browns Valley, Minn ., on Dec. 19, 1912, to Cornelius and Ann Geurts (Heckel). She gr ew up on the family's farm in eastern South Dakota, the oldest of six chil dren.As a young woman, Verona earned her teaching degree and taught in a one ro om school in Browns Valley. After several years she moved to Appleton, Wis ., where she worked for the phone company in the days in which each call er had to be manually connected to the person being called. Appleton is al so where she met Clarence Hartzheim, whom she married on Nov. 30, 1944.Verona devoted her life to her family and her church. She and Clarence rai sed five children and Verona spent her adult life caring for her husban d, children, grand and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook a nd at our many family gatherings she stayed busy preparing and serving fo od and had to be encouraged to sit down and eat herself. She was alwa ys a sympathetic listener, even when she was not pleased by what she hear d. When not raising her family, she was often attending, or volunteeri ng to work at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton. When Clarence pass ed away in 1998, Verona went to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Cla rice and Carl Geenen of Brown Deer, Wis.Verona was preceded in death by her husband, sister, Rita Hable and brothe r, Cleteus. In addition to Clarice and Carl, she is survived by her son s, Gary (Kim) Marysville, Wash.; Lee (Esther), Green Bay; Neil (Mary) Gre en Bay; and Mark, Cologne, Germany. She is also survived by 14 grandchildr en; two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins a nd friends.A memorial service will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleto n, at 11 a.m. on Sept. 8. Friends may come at 10 to share their thought s, prayers and many happy memories of Verona. The family would especially like to thank the staff of Wisconsin Luther an Nursing Home of Milwaukee and the Odyssey Hospice Center for their ca re in making the last months of Verona's life as peaceful as could be hop ed for.     Richard J. McCarthy, age 93, of Appleton, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Hospital after a brief illness.
    He was born April 21, 1921 in the Town of Center to the late William and Helen (Heckel) McCarthy. Following High School he worked in the Appleton Ice plant and developed an interest in diesel mechanics. He then attended The Diesel Mechanics School in Chicago. Shortly after completing school Rich decided to leave the ice plant and work the family farm. He utilized many of those diesel mechanics skills to maintain all of the farm equipment and enjoyed being inventive and creating machinery, elevators, and other equipment for the farm. He also enjoyed creating motorized go karts and mini bikes for the kids.
    On August 31, 1950 he married LaVerne M. Coenen at St. John's Church, Little Chute. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this summer. Richard was the 3rd generation on the still operating family farm, working well into his late 70's. His son and grandson now continue this family tradition.
    Rich had a great interest in mechanics and loved to hunt on his property. He was able to enjoy this lifetime endeavor until last fall when he was still able to climb a tree stand to go deer hunting. His many days in the woods were of great enjoyment to him both while deer hunting and cutting down trees for the winter fireplace.

    Willard J. McCarthy, age 94, brother of several area residents, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, in Normal, Illinois. He was a retired professor of Industrial Technology at Illinois State University.
    Willard was born March 16, 1922, in Appleton, a son of William and Helen Heckel McCarthy. He married Lynette Nolen Feb. 8, 1947, in Grand Prairie, TX. She died, Feb. 27, 2012, shortly after celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary.
    Survivors include two daughters, Leah (David) Kopka, Bloomington, IL; Constance (Alfred) Letizio, Chelsea, MI; a son Dr. Timothy (Barbara) McCarthy, Eden Prairie, MN; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
    One brother survives, Cliff (Betty); and two sisters, Mary (Jack, deceased) Reardon; both of Appleton; Dolly (Clare, deceased) Plesser; Columbus, Ohio. He was predeceased by three brothers, Richard (Vern, survives); Emmet (Ardell); Donald (Liz Hopfensperger, survives); all of Appleton.

    Clifford "Cliff" J. McCarthy
    Appleton - Clifford "Cliff" McCarthy, age 87, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2018. He was born on March 10, 1930 in Appleton to the late William and Helen (Heckel) McCarthy.
    Cliff married the love of his life Betty Bergeman, on January 30, 1952 at St. Edward Catholic Church. Together they were blessed with five children.
    He was employed with the Outagamie County Highway Department for thirty-two years, retiring in 1989.
    He enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting at his cottage on Post Lake. Cliff's garage, tools and tractors were all special delights to Cliff.
    Cliff was known as a hardworking and dedicated man who was very proud of all he accomplished. Above all Cliff cherished his wife and family, as they were truly his best accomplishments.
    Cliff is survived by his loving wife, Betty; his four children, Jean (Joe) Talamanco of Appleton, Dan (Chris) McCarthy of Black Creek, Kevin (Jane) McCarthy of Hortonville and Perry (Dawn) McCarthy of Shiocton; ten grandchildren, Sara (Kris) Hoffman, Christine Calmes, Leah McCarthy, Tracey (Ryan) Kaphingst, Tara (Jason) Schmidt, Eric McCarthy, Megan (Nate) Panas, Holly (Ryan) Rusch, Pam (John) Griesbach and Gwen (Paul) Court and twenty-one great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his two sisters, Dolly Plesser and Mary Reardon; and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Fockel and Liz Hofpensperger. Cliff also leaves behind many other family members and friends too numerous to list but never forgotten.
    In addition to his parents, Cliff was preceded in death by his in-laws, August (Ruby) Bergeman; his son, Patrick McCarthy; his grandson, Matthew Calmes; four brothers, Richard, Willard, Emmett and Donald; three sisters-in-law, Vern, Lynn and Ardell and three brothers-in-law, Clare Pleser, Jack Reardon and Andy Fockel Jr.

    Menasha - Dr. Jerome W. Riese, age 85, died on January 18, 2018. Jerome was born on May 2, 1932, in Freedom, Wisconsin, to Ferdinand and Anna (Williamson) Riese. He was blessed to have a mother who was a teacher, and both parents who encouraged his desire to achieve.
    Jerome completed eight grades of elementary school at St. Nicholas School, Freedom, in seven years, at the head of his class. He graduated from St. Mary High School, Menasha, where he achieved many positions of leadership, including drum major, Sodality president, and prom king. He graduated valedictorian of his class.
    At Marquette University, Jerome was again active in many areas, such as band president and math club president. His top campus service was as All-University Homecoming Chairman in 1952. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1953, with a double major in physics and mathematics.
    Jerome entered graduate school at MIT in Boston with a teaching assistantship in the physics lab. He was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship in subsequent years at MIT, where he received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics in 1958.
    Jerome's other Boston achievements included winning the lovely Maureen C. Fenlon, also a teacher, as his bride in December 1956, and the birth of their daughter, Ruth Anne, in 1958. After graduation, the new family moved to Wisconsin, where Jerry joined the R&E Department of Kimberly-Clark Corporation.
    But the space age beckoned, and in late 1962, Dr. Riese accepted an offer from Westinghouse Astronuclear Lab in Pittsburgh to join their team in developing a nuclear engine to propel an interplanetary rocket. He quickly developed a unique, finite-element method for analyzing neutron density outer space-time in a reactor. This caught the interest of other reactor scientists across the country, and led to his being Invited Speaker at the American Nuclear Society's meeting in Philadelphia in June 1964. Jerome was also promoted from Senior Staff Scientist to Fellow Scientist at Westinghouse.
    However, Pittsburgh's not Wisconsin (as Maureen may have pointed out to Jerry!), nor did the space program offer the stability of a consumer products company. So Jerry re-joined Kimberly-Clark in late 1964, where he enjoyed a challenging career in a wide variety of math-physics applications until his retirement on Jan. 1, 1995. Career highlights included his presidency of the KC Technical Society, presidency of the KC Fellow Scientists and Engineering Consultants, and General Chairmanship of the 1992 KC Technical Conference in Madison, Wisconsin.
    Meanwhile, Jerry and Maureen were blessed with eight children, each of whom gave them great joy. The family camping trips reached their zenith with a five-week exploration of the Southwest in 1971. To this day, the siblings say, "We never knew what was coming each new day, but we knew it would be great!" The children also provided their father with super "bragging rights" as they matured into two "double doctors (MD/PHD)," one corporate vice president, a business consultant, a journalist, a nurse, a Grammy-nominated singer, and a teacher.
    But the very best times for Jerry were the nine years he got to spend with Maureen after his retirement and before her death in 2003. In subsequent years, Jerry worked hard at ignoring the huge hole Maureen's absence left in his life. Surely, he is delighted to be at her side now!
    In addition to Maureen, Jerome was preceded in death by his eldest son, Randy; by his parents; by his brother, John; and by his sons-in-law, David Segal, Tom Kelly, and Brian Blaney. He is survived by his remaining seven children (and spouses): Ruth Anne (David) Landsverk, Rebecca Kelly, Rachel Segal, Dr. Richard (Jeannine) Riese, Judith Blaney, Jerome (Karen) Riese, Dr. Matthew (Annette) Riese, and daughter-in-law Jeanne Riese. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren: Maureen, Matthew and Joseph Landsverk; John Patrick, Thomas, and William Kelly; Alexander, Maximillian, and Victoria Segal; Gabrielle Riese; Richard and Erin Blaney; Rachel, Katherine, Mary, and Brigit Riese; and Adam and Liam Riese. He is further survived by his sisters (and spouses): Mary Ann (Ronald) Wenzel, and Rosemary (Walter) Pauls; by his sister-in-law, Sancee Riese; and by many nieces and nephews.
    Jerry always encouraged each of his children to set goals and to aim for excellence, to love one another without fail, and to question the unquestionable. He was the most steadfast, loving, and generous of fathers, qualities his children will continually strive to pass on. Although his dream career of stand-up comic was sidelined by eight children, he will be fondly remembered for his great joy in cracking jokes and peanuts at the head of a very full, loud, and happy table.
    The funeral liturgy for Jerome will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, January 26, 2018 at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH (528 Second St., Menasha). Visitation will be held the evening before on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME (537 N.     Ronald Thomas McCann, "McCann-nic," 74, Appleton, surrounded by his family, entered into eternal life on Monday, September 22, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer, He was born July 1, 1934, in the town of Freedom, to the late Thomas McCann and Evelyn McCann-Hoffmann. He married the love of his life Joyce DeWildt, on November 30, 1957, and together they shared 50 years. After high school, Ron served his country by joining the United States Navy. He retired from his work as a mechanic of McCann's Mechanical Services of which he owned and operated.
    Ron loved to take leisurely rides on his Gold Wing and snowmobile the north woods, but most of all he loved to take out his boat and enjoy the beautiful lakes and rivers with his family and friends.
    Survivors include his wife Joyce, three sons: Mike (Joan) and their children, Paul (Alicia), Kimberly (Jesse), Kayla (Mike); Pete (Teri) and their children; Joshua, Jarib, Jakob, Jaania; Rick McCann and his children: Adam and Hayley. He is further survived by his sisters: Jean Pierri, Evie Kohl and Molly Chapleau, brother Bob (Amy) McCann, sisters-in-law: Dorothy (Rich) Evers and Ione Schommer, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
    His parents, mother and father in law, sister and brothers in law preceded him in death.
    A Mass of Celebration for Ron will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 25, 2008, at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Rev. Tom Farrell officiating. Entombment will be at 2 p.m. in Highland Memorial Park, with military honors. Friends may visit the family Thursday at the church from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.

She left us as she lived- a gentle, kind, giving soul. Her sense of humor and soft voice hid the feisty, strong strength that lived in her.
