one of his favorite pastimes as a little boy was hammering nails into a ground
many of the more than to the modern 24 structures built by Anton Tony Welhouse are still in use today in the Fox River Valley, an enduring testimony to the quality of the craftsmanship of this hard-working carpenter whose career spanned 46 years in the early and mid 1900's. He was best known for the barns he built, 88 of them, according to his records. The largest one was constructed in 1918 in the town of Buchanan for Dan Ryan who wanted "the biggest barn in the County." It measures 46 by 120 ft., reaches 50 ft. to the peak, and is now owned by the Robert Berghuis family. It was built at a cost of $420 for labor, netting him a profit of $66.91. The average wage paid a worker was approximately 45¢ per hour. Most of these bonds were built with a gambrel roofs. In those days barn timber for put together in sections called bands on the ground, with the joints been secured with oak pegs. The assembled sections were then raised to form the skeleton of a barn. As time went on, more parts such as tresses, or prefabricated, short attending the time it took to build a barn. Anton Tony Wells also built more than a hundred and five homes and 31 sheds, including the buildings at his home on highway 55, south of cocotte, where his son and family now live. The House is representative of a style called prairie architecture with its square two-story shape and hip roof. He also built silos, the remodeling and repair and moved many buildings in the area. Tony was born on a farm located in the area of the present St. Aloysius parish, the son of Gephardt John and Johanna interment will house, December 31st, 1890. His father died five months before his birth, of sunstroke watchmaking fences with his neighbor, Mike Klein.

He was born October 12, 1913, to the late Henry and Anna (Made r) Welhouse, in Kaukauna, where he was a resident until 1955, at which ti me he moved to Milwaukee and in 1975, he moved to Antigo area. While a res ident of Kaukauna, George was employed by the Kaukauna Machine Corporati on and in Milwaukee he was a heavy equipment operator for a road paving co mpany. He served with the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II and w as a member of Operating Engineers Local #139 for 50 years. LaVerne H. "Vernie" Jonen, age 92, former longtime resident of rural Kaukauna, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009. Vernie resided at the Appleton Health Care Center (formerly Franciscan Care Center) the past four years. She was born May 6, 1917, in Kaukauna to the late Henry and Anna (Mader) Welhouse. Vernie was the last surviving member of their family. On July 14, 1942, she married the "love of her life" Arthur Jonen at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kaukauna. Vernie was a homemaker for many years, assisting her husband with the usual farming chores and raising a family. She worked side by side with Arthur and wasn't afraid of hard work. Vernie was outgoing and enjoyed many years of league bowling, shopping and traveling with her husband after his retirement. She appreciated cars and had a special love for all types of dogs.
Vernie is survived by her children: Ronald (Lorraine) Jonen, Fremont; and Donna (Dan) Cichy, Milwaukee; son-in-law, Scott (Pam) Schuler, Hilbert; six grandchildren: Jina and Jeremy Jonen, Jessica (Joshua) Grunska, Jillian Jonen, Jill (Gary) Frassetto and their children Abbi, Zach and Dominic, and Holly (Ken) Bekkers and their children Ryan, Nathan and Aaron; two stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Ardene Welhouse and Elizabeth Obermeyer; caring nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Luanna M. Schwalenberg, 86, formerly of Kaukauna, died at Prairie Home Elder Services in Menasha on Friday, Dec. 8, after a difficult struggle with Alzheimer's disease. God blessed her with a peaceful passing, surrounded by her five children, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Luanna was born on March 6, 1920, in Kaukauna, daughter of the late Henry and Anna (Mader) Welhouse. She was a faith-filled member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Kaukauna.
Luanna was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She truly enjoyed being a dedicated mother and homemaker, taking pride in her family and home. She will be remembered by her children and grandchildren for her kind and loving ways and for her many baked goods, especially her cookies and Christmas candy. She loved being at home, using her talents for sewing and decorating, and enjoyed taking care of her house and yard. Her great-grandchildren were just getting to know and appreciate "Nana Luanna".
She was a loving wife to her husband Raymond for 46 years. Together they raised a close-knit family and enjoyed both a special 40th and 45th wedding anniversary. Luanna was a sweet, caring person, and those whose lives she touched felt fortunate to have known her. She dedicated herself to her family, always putting them first, and felt joy in the process.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses; her son and daughter-in-law Gary and Janet Schwalenberg, Kaukauna; and her four daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and John Lamers, Little Chute; Linda and Warren Engel Brillion; Karen and Jim Van Drasek. Sue and Bruce Vanderloop, Kaukauna. She has ten grandchildren: Lori, Daniel, Sheri and Jennifer Schwalenberg; Scott (Susie), Jamon (Patience), and Eric Lamers; Brett and Garret Van Drasek, and Lindsey Vanderloop. She also has three great-grandchildren, Christopher and Katie Lamers and Alexis Schwalenberg, with a fourth great-grandchild due in June. Luanna is also survived by her two brothers, Elmer Welhouse, Union Grove and Edward (Ardene) Welhouse, Kaukauna; her two sisters, LaVerne Jonen, Appleton and Leona Gerhartz, Brillion, her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Obermeyer, her life-time friend and sister-in-law, Esther Schwalenberg, her brother-in-law, David Six, and many nieces and nephews.
Luanna was preceded in death by her husband Raymond in 1990, her daughter Joyce in 1965, and her brother George Welhouse in 2004, and his former wives Fanny and Doris; also her sisters-in-law, Ursula Welhouse and Arlene Welhouse and brothers-in-law, Arthur Jonen and Claude Gerhartz, as well as her husband's twin brother, Roland, and his sisters Anita (Melvin) Arps Six and Clara (Emmett) Wierschke.
A special thanks to all the wonderful caregivers who treated our mother with compassion and respect, who saw past the disease and appreciated the true nature of this gentle and kind woman. Your kindness and love will always be remembered. Also, a thank you to her neighbors who watched out for her during the years she lived alone.

Edward H. Welhouse, "Eddie", Kaukauna, age 81, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 7, 2008, surrounded by his family. Eddie was the youngest of five children born to the late Henry and Anna (Mader) Welhouse of Kaukauna on February 15, 1927. Eddie served his country in the Korean Conflict. In 1947, Eddie married the late Ursula Vosters at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Little Chute. Together, they had four children. Ursula preceded him in death on August 31, 1977, after sharing 30 years together. In 1978, Eddie married Ardene DeJong Geurts and together they enjoyed 30 years of marriage. Eddie lived in Kaukauna for his entire life. Eddie enjoyed working with his family, friends and neighbors on their farms and also worked in construction for Art Nimmer and was proud of all the area churches and schools he helped build. He also worked for Kaukauna Utilities for 25 years, retiring in 1992. Eddie enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing sheepshead and polka dancing. He also enjoyed spending time with family at his son's cottage in Pickerel, Wis. Eddie will be remembered for his genuine love of his family and willingness to help out with whatever task was at hand. The work ethic Eddie was known for will be hard to live up to but will serve as a model for his family. Eddie was an active member of St. Katharine Drexal Church in Kaukauna and shared a deep faith in his Lord, which sustained him as he struggled with his declining health. For the past two years Eddie lived at Kindred Hearts of Kaukauna.

Jerome H. Welhouse, Kaukauna, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the age of 92, with his family at his side. He was born March 17, 1915, to the late Joseph and Johanna (Van Linn) Welhouse and has been a Kaukauna resident all of his life. Jerome married Margaret Imelia Grishaber on May 14, 1940, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Appleton. He was involved with his father and brothers in the construction business and then established the Jerome Welhouse Construction Company. Jerome was a member of St. Katherine Drexel Parish, Kaukauna.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Welhouse; six children, David (Kathy) Welhouse, Donald (Audrey) Welhouse and Janet (Gary) Schwalenberg, all of Kaukauna; Dennis Welhouse, Chardon, Ohio; Jerry (Mary) Welhouse, High Cliff; and Gregory (Lori) Welhouse, Kaukauna; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Welhouse, Kaukauna; sisters-in-law, Ginger (Don) Stuyvenberg, Darboy; and Maxine Welhouse, Appleton. Jerome is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene and James (Rosemary) Welhouse; sisters, Agnes (Jim) Sanders and Alice (Don) Garrigan; and sister-in-law, Rose Welhouse.
The funeral liturgy for Jerome will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH-ST. ALOYSIUS, 2401 Main Avenue, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. until the time of mass.

Harold J. Welhouse, Kaukauna, age 90, passed into God's loving embrace on November 11, 2012. A lifelong resident of Kaukauna, he was born April 27, 1922, to the late Joseph and Johanna (VanLinn) Welhouse. Harry began his work career at his father's business, Jos. Welhouse & Sons Construction, after his 8th grade graduation, and continued learning his craft until he enlisted in the Navy in October, 1942, serving on the USS Stratford in the Pacific Arena as a Gunner's Mate 2nd Class until his discharge in January, 1946. During his service career, he was awarded a commendation in marksmanship from his Gunnery Officer for having shot and sunk a Japanese mine that was endangering their ship. When returning from service, Harry continued working with his father's company until he joined Schwalenberg Builders, retiring in 1984. During his career, he was a talented 'finishing' carpenter and was much sought after for his expertise.
On September 4, 1948, Harry married the love of his life, RoseAnn "Blondie" (Van Bakel), enjoying 46 years of marriage. Together they raised nine children. Though never having moved onto high school, he put great store in education and was proud that each of his children graduated from high school, many following with college and some to master's programs. Harry enjoyed golf in his younger years and began as a caddy at Oakwood Hills, in Kaukauna, while still a teenager. Taking up the game, he achieved the Class A championship Trophy in 1952. Hunting was another passion and he knew all the places for pheasant, grouse, occasionally duck, but especially deer. His accuracy in marksmanship led to many meals of wild game on our table. Dad loved deer hunting so much that the year he broke his foot, he had the cast cut off in time to tromp in the woods. He would wish you all well as the season starts; he will be joining you in spirit.
Some men leave legacies of money and philanthropy while others have their names in history books, our father leaves behind a legacy of unending love. He loved each and every one of his children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren fully. There will be many memories of his bacon and egg breakfasts, dancing to his favorite songs with the granddaughters, watching football with his sons and talking of their hunting stories. To him, all his children were his favorites. As a new generation entered the scene, his great-grandchildren also enjoyed sitting on Grandpa Harry's lap.
He is survived by his children: Harold Lee (Sharon), Char (Mark) Beschta, Christine (Joseph) McMahon, Joseph, Jean (Jon) Orr, Paul (Lois), Kathryn (Robert) Berken, Laurie (Al) Bowers, and Marilea. Ruth M. Mader, 92, died Saturday, March 12, 2011, at home in Darboy, Wis., surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born Aug. 4, 1918, to the late Anton and Anna (Emmers) Welhouse in Kaukauna. Ruth married Gordon Mader on Sept. 6, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kaukauna. Shortly after their marriage they built a new home on the Mader homestead located on the corner of Manitowoc Road and County Highway N. At that time she became a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Darboy, where she remained an active member to this day. Ruth lived there until two years ago when, due to health concerns, she moved in with her daughter, Jean, who also lives on the family farm.
Ruth was a choir member of both St. Mary's and Holy Angels parishes. She was a gifted soprano and in 1946, at Christmas midnight Mass, she effortlessly sang a solo part in "O Holy Night". Through the years she sang for a number of weddings, often singing Schubert's "Ave Maria". Along with her sister, Martha, she taught her five children to sing and for a number of years her children entertained for small group events. In addition to being a devoted and loving mother of five children, she also welcomed her husband's brother, Edward, her sister, Martha, and her Aunt Kate to live with them in their home during different periods of their lives.
While maintaining the household she also worked part-time at Telephone Secretaries until she obtained a full-time position in the office at Appleton Papers until her retirement in 1983. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by five children, Kenny (Diane) Mader and their three children, Bryan, Trent (Kerri) and Alyssa (Nick) Aerts; Francis (Diane) Mader and their daughter, Andrea (Dominick) Sopkovich; Jeannie Mader; Patty (Howard) Mader-Ebert and their three children, Allison, Jackie and Jaimee; Tony (Sue) Mader and their two children Jordan and Lucas; five great-grandchildren, Ivan, Katya, Chloe, Haley, Kherington; a sister-in-law, Mona Welhouse; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Terri Larson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, stepmother, three brothers and three sisters.
Ruth's Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Holy Spirit Parish at HOLY ANGELS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Darboy, with Fr. Dave Beaudry, Fr. James Neilson and Fr. Bob Kabat concelebrating. Viewing and visitation will be Wednesday at the Boettcher Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Drive, Kaukauna, from 4 p.m. until the Parish Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. and again on Thursday at Church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. The couple lived in the Kauk auna area their entire married life. Rita farmed with her husband until h is retirement. She then was employed by Kaukauna Community Hospital for ma ny years in housekeeping. She loved playing sheepshead, spending time at t heir cottage in Townsend, and dancing. She always praised and loved her ch ildren, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved singing with frie nds, playing the piano, and embroidering gifts for her family. A favori te craft Rita enjoyed was making klouches with her daughter Ann. Eunice V. Grissman (Welhouse), 81, a.k.a. "Euny," originally from Kaukauna, resided near Sherwood, WI. She was born to George and Elizabeth (Gast) Welhouse on June 26, 1934. Surrounded by family, she left this earth peacefully on April 15, 2016, to continue her journey to her heavenly home. There she will be reunited with her loved ones.
On March 30, 1957, Eunice married her sweetheart, Don Grissman, Kaukauna, and recently celebrated their 59th Anniversary. After graduating from Kaukauna High School, she worked at Aid Association for Lutherans, and Sherwood Food Mart until retirement.
"She is worth far more than rubies" (v. 10), "Her children arise and called her blessed" (v.28). Proverbs 31 is a great example of how Eunice lived her life. She always made the most of her talents and resources, including the gift of hospitality. Whenever people came to visit, she always made you feel welcome and loved.
Through the years, Eunice and Don enjoyed camping and traveling with their girls, and continued the tradition with their grandkids. Possessing a true servant's heart, Eunice faithfully cared for her family and friends through cooking, baking, sewing and gardening. A woman of faith and the heart of the Grissman family, Euny shaped their spirituality by her constant prayers, love and guidance.
Eunice loved to garden, dance, bowl, play cards, camp and especially laugh, to name a few. Eunice's legacy includes her husband, Don; and three daughters: Shelly (Tom) Jost of Hilbert, Lori (John) Krueger of Hilbert, and Julie (Mike) Morris of Oshkosh, WI. Grandma to 8: Stephanie (Mike) Halbach, Danielle Jost, Whitney (Kyle) Kees, Ashley Krueger, Kyle Krueger, Logan, Luke and Levi Morris. Great Grandma to 4: Aaron, Zach, Colton and baby Halbach due in October. Euny is further survived by siblings: Dick (Geri) Welhouse, Elayne (Dennis) Lehrer, Sharon (Jerry) Pitt, Eugene (Frankie) Welhouse, David (Dixie) Welhouse.
Preceded in death are her parents, Elizabeth and George Welhouse, and her sister JoAnn (Dick) Frederickson.

Age 72, Fremont, formerly of Kaukauna, passed away peacefully, Thursday, February 26, after a courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease, with his loving wife of 30 years at his side. Ron was born on February 21, 1943 in Kaukauna, WI to the late Arthur and LaVerne (Welhouse) Jonen. He worked with his father as a carpenter and owned and operated RJ Builders in Kaukauna until his retirement. Ron was a simple family man who dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed nature especially fishing, gardening and bonfires. He had a creative spirit that involved putzing with just about everything, up-cycling and creating Poppy's Park in the back yard of their last home. Ron also had a generous soul and believed that everything has a purpose and also liked to dabble in the lottery.
He will be greatly missed by his loving and caring wife, Lorraine of 30 years; six children: Jina (Greg Danko) Jonen, Jeremy Jonen, Jillian (Chris) Burgess, Jessica (Josh) Grunska, Lisa (Michael) Hopwood and Nick (Margaret) Corrente; nine grandchildren: Jacob, Joshua, Courtney, Joseph, Dominic, Allison, Kennedy, Bekah and Brynn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Patty and Donna; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Abraham and Dorothy Daitch.

Funeral Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church Tuesday morning for Miss Joyce Ann Schwalenberg, 17, who drowned in a traffic accident Friday. Miss Schwalenberg and Richard Vanderloop, 18, had been on a double date Friday evening to shop for dresses for the junior prom. Later they drove to the Thilmany mill parking lot near the river. Joyce Ann was in the driver's seat when they decided to leave. Vanderloop reached over and turned the key on and the car started rolling forward. He told her to hit the brake but she stepped on the gas by mistake. The car ran over the embankment and into the river landing in about four feet of water on the roof. Vanderloop escaped through a broken window and made several attempts to get the girl out. The fire department arrived on the scene and administered artificial respiration after the car was removed by a wrecker.

Julie R. Nooyen, age 71, of Appleton, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2013. She was born on August 21, 1942, to the late James H. and Rose Mary T. (McCann) Welhouse and lived in Appleton. Julie married Thomas Nooyen on April 4, 1964, and spent 49 years together. She worked for over 25 years at Kimberly Clark. Julie was a giving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a private person focused on her God and her family. From the Book of Proverbs: When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize, she brings him good and not evil, all the days of her life. She rises while it is still night and distributes food to her household. She is girt about with strength, and sturdy are her arms. She reaches her hands out to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy. She fears not the snow for her household all her charges are doubly clothed. She is clothed with strength and dignity and she laughs at days to come. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue is kindly counsel. She watches the conduct of her household, her children rise up and praise her. The woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her a reward for her labors and let her works praise her at the city gates.

Ann K. Stumpf, Kaukauna, age 72, died Thursday February 27, 2014 peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was born in Kaukauna on June 6, 1941 to the late Ralph and Marie (Welhouse) Mader. Ann married Tom Stumpf at Sacred Heart Parish in Sherwood on November 27, 1961. She was an active member of St. Aloysius Parish. Ann enjoyed playing Sheepshead, traveling, sewing, canning, gardening, baking and was a gifted quilter. She was also a 4-H leader for the Buchanan Badgers. Ann was employed as the Town of Buchanan Treasurer for 18 years and also worked at Kaukauna Cheese until her retirement. She treasured more than anything spending time with her twenty-five grandchildren and will be warmly remembered by many for her family pumpkin stand.

On April 18, 1970 Jim married the former Karen Kress at Sacr ed Heart Catholic Church, Sherwood. The couple farmed in the town of Bucha nan their entire married lives. Dorothy owned and operated various beauty salons including: Pink Peal, Lords & Ladies and Dans Barber Shop. She enjoyed golf, was a big Packer Fan and loved spending time with her family and friends. Dorothy was a member of Holy Spirit Parish - Holy Angels Church, Darboy.

Chad E. Welhouse, age 38, passed away peacefully at home after a courageous five year battle with lung cancer on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. He was born on January 15, 1975, to Dennis and Nancy Welhouse and resided in Hollandtown. Chad graduated from UW- Oshkosh in 1997 and worked for fifteen years as a facility manager at RR Donnely (Banta). He loved baseball his entire life and greatly enjoyed coaching his children's T-ball and Little League teams. Chad also loved snowmobiling with family and friends, and spending time cheering for the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers. He spent countless hours playing baseball and softball with close friends and teammates. No matter what he did, Chad worked and played hard and never gave up. What he loved doing most of all was spending time with his family. Chad touched so many lives in so many ways, and he will be truly missed.

Obituary:
Brian Christopher Lamers, age 43, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016 after a brave and inspiring struggle awaiting a liver and kidney transplant. He was born to Randall and Ann (Buchinger) Lamers on March 8, 1973. He married Scott Tiedemann on May 15, 2015 after being together for 12 years. Brian graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1991 and then obtained an Associate's Degree through Fox Valley Technical College. At the height of Brian's professional career, he was responsible for marketing to a tri-state region for the student loan division of Associated Bank.
Brian's passions were sobriety, sunsets, cooking, making others happy, his three dogs (Mickey, Zachary, and Maxwell), nature hikes and camping; and his heart will always reside at his parents' cabin on White Sand Lake.
Brian is survived by his loving husband, Scott Tiedemann; his parents Randall and Ann Lamers; his brother Chad (Amy) Lamers; his sister Amber (Carlos) Torres; Parents-in-law: William and Carole Tiedemann; brother-in-law Matthew (Jill) Tiedemann; sister-in-law Stacey Winter; Goddaughter: Kendra Lamers; nieces: Brianna Lamers, Halli and Lena Rief; nephews: Trent Lamers, Sullivan Torres, future nephew Everett Torres, Harrison Tiedemann, Keaten Rief; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents: Sylvan and Shirley Lamers; maternal grandparents: Leo and Rita Buchinger; uncle Rick Lamers and grandfather-in-law, Chester Hancock.

Funeral Services for Brian will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Drive, Kaukauna. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.
