John Van Laanen Sr had at least one brother and one sister: Sister marri ed Joston (?) and moved to Oregon and had a family. The brothermarried a woman who was part indian.

John Van Laanen, Scott Townshi p, is a native of Holland. At the age of fifteen he came here with his par ents in 1851. (NOTE: John did not come with his parents. The earliest V an Laanen's came to Bay Settlement was in 1848 so John could have come a f ew years earlier or a few years later than his parents) For the first t en years of his life here he followed farming through different parts of t he State, where he acquired a knowledge of the people and language which h as helped him so well in his after life.Note: In 1861 he married Miss Domitil Layianas who was born here.He has 184 Acres of nice land. Mr and Mrs Van Laanen have six sons and t wo daughters. His father lives with them. His mother is buried in Wequio ck Cemetary. He also had a brick yard just below the ledge on the ba ck of the farm. Bricks were used to build the farm house that is there today.

JOHN VAN LAANEN FUNERAL AT BAY SETTLEMENT FRIDAY----heading of newspap er article which reads as follows: "Services for late BaySettlement pione er to take place at Holy Cross Church. ---(From Thursday's Daily)---. T he funeral of John Van Laanen, whosedeath occurred at the home of son at Bay Settlement on Monday evening, wi ll be held tomorrow morning from the Holy Cross church at BaySettlement and the body will be interred at the Bay Settlement cemetary. T he services will be conducted by Rev. Mickers.Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of the county. He was born in Hol land (Nord Brabant province) on July 25, 1836. He came to thiscountry and county with his parents in 1849 and has lived here ever sinc e. He followed farming for about fifty-six years, having retiredabout three years ago. He was married in the year 1861 to Miss Sophia Leya nois whose death occurred in 1907. He is the father of nine children, thr ee daughters and six sons. Mrs John Van Ess of Bay Settlement, Mrs Mary V an Vegal of Bay Settlement and Mrs John Ver Baten of Wrightstown; Albe rt of Iron Mountain, Edward of Fond du Lac, John, George and Hugh of Bay S ettlement and F J Van Laanen of this city. He is survived by fifty-five gr andchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Other relatives are locat ed in Portland, Oregon, Little Chute and Stiles. He has been a member of t he Catholic Knights of Wisconsin for a good number of years and had many f riends in this city and the surrounding country.

Note:The death of John Van Laanen, Sr., a well-known resident of Bay Settleme nt for the past fifty years, occurred last night at 9 o'clockat the home of his son, John, on the Benderville road. The cause of his de ath was dropsy. He had been ailing for the past six months.He was the father of a large family and leaves a large number of grand-chi ldren and also great grand-children. WRIGHTSTOWN, Wis. - Seventy-six grandchildren, 142 great grandchildren, s ix great-great grandchildren are listed among the survivors of Mrs. John V erbeten, 83, who died a 9 o'clock Thursday evening at her home in Wrightst own after a year's illness. Born in Bay Settlement, July 29, 1862, she liv ed in this community for the past 55 years. She was a member of St. Paul C atholic church and ofthe Christian Mother's Society. The body is at the Greenwood Funeral hom e, Kaukauna, where it may be viewed after 7 o'clock Saturaady evening. T he rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock Saturday and Sunday nights. Funer al services will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at St. Paul church w ith the Rev. August Broekman celeebrant at the solemn requiem high mass. B urial will be in the church cemetery.Survivors include her husband, six daughters and three sons. Frank J. Van Lanen Wrightstown, WisconsinAge 81, was found dead in his driveway Wednesday morning. Mr. Van Lanen was born September 4, 1887 in the Town of Preble. He farmed in the Wrightstown area until ten years ago when he moved to the Village of Wrightstown. He was a member of th e Holy Name Society and the Catholic Order of Forsters and a past treasurer of the Town of Wrightstown.Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Clem [Colette] Vande Hey, Kaukauna; Mrs. Norbert [Mary] Nelessen, Kimberly; Sister Ann Jude C.S.A., former Roseann, of Nicaragua; five sons, Rueben, Kaukauna; Ralph, Green Bay; Norbert, Little Chute; Francis , Greenleaf; William, Michigan City, Indiana; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Lamers, Mrs. Alvira McDaniel, both Kaukauna; Mrs. Mathilda Arnoldussen, Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Peter [Susan] Verbeten, Kimberly; one half brother, Howard Verbeten, Kaukauna ; 34 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.His wife preced him in death two and a half years ago. Friends may call at the De Wane Funeral Home, Wrightstown after 2:30 p.m. Friday. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning 10:30 at St . Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Cyril Kabat officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Rosanne J. Van Ryzin, Appleton, age 88, passed away on Wednesday May 9, 2007 with her family at her side. Rosanne was born November 8, 1918, in Kimberly, WI., daughter of the late Peter and Susan (Van Laanen) Verbeten. Rosanne enjoyed craftwork, cooking, sewing, decorating, and dancing. She was a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shoppe for 40 plus years, and was very active with the Christian Mothers of Sacred Heart Parish in Appleton where she was a member. She made many long lasting friendships that were cultivated through 50 plus years of tax preparation and bookkeeping.
Rosanne is survived by two sons: Wade (Chris Baum) Van Ryzin, and Gary (Pamela) Van Ryzin; five grandchildren: Casandra (Ken) Cobb, Al (Erika) Van Ryzin, Kimberly, Andrew, and Benjamin Van Ryzin; three great grandchildren: Max, Maclean Rose, and Shen. She is further survived by two sisters: Gretchen Hornung, and Julienne Rusch; two brothers: Francis and Richard (Janet) Verbeten, and a sister in law, Helen (Gordon) Schuh.
Rosanne was preceded in death by her former husband, Howard, brothers and sisters in law; L. Marie Verbeten, Bob Hornung, Maynard Rusch, Lawrence Van Ryzin, Kenneth "Jake" Van Ryzin, Lois (Russel) Vandelois, and Marian (Gordon) Smith.
The Memorial Mass for Rosanne will be at 11 a.m. on Monday May 14, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 222 East Fremont St., Appleton. Visitation will be on Sunday at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. and again at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial is being established.

Francis T. Verbeten, 88, Kimberly, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at ThedaCare Hospice, with his family at his side.
He was born on July 3, 1923, to the late Peter and Susan (Van Laanen) Verbeten in Kimberly. Francis graduated from Kimberly High School in 1941. He married Lillian "Marie" Greis on September 26, 1944. They celebrated 62 years together prior to her passing on December 4, 2006. They were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Escanaba, Mich. Francis entered the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942, where he served in the Pacific Theatre for three years. He also served in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952.
Francis worked for Kimberly Clark and Midtec and retired from Repap in Kimberly after 44 years. His favorite past time was music and joined the Kimberly Community Band in 1941. He was a member of the band for 70 years. Francis held the offices of vice president and business manager, as well as being on the board of directors throughout his years with the band. Francis was also a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Kimberly, where he served as parish trustee.
Francis is survived by his five children, William (Minty) Verbeten, Breaks, Va.; Diane (Greg) Lemmers, Muskego; Janet (Stephen) Sanders, Manitowoc; Michael (Teresa) Verbeten, Norcross, Ga.; and Amy (John) Jensen, Appleton; grandchildren, Beau (Katie) Sanders, Quinn Sanders, Matt Leitner, Peter and Marissa Verbeten and Ben Jensen; great-grandchildren, Leo and Judah Sanders; siblings, Gretchen Hornung, Julienne Rusch and Richard (Janet) Verbeten. He is further survived by brothers-in-law, John (Irma) Greis, Mike (Annette) Greis, Jim (Sharon) Greis and Tom (Martha) Greis. Francis is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rosanne Van Ryzin and brothers-in-law, Bob Hornung, Maynard Rusch and Howard Van Ryzin and sister-in-law, Marge (Joe) Milokna.
The funeral liturgy for Francis will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH, 600 E. Kimberly Ave., Kimberly with Fr. David Beaudry officiating. Interment will take place at the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.

Julienne Rusch, age 85, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 3, 2016, at American Grand Assisted Living in Kaukauna. Julienne was born on Halloween, October 31, 1930 to the late Peter and Susan (Van Laanen) Verbeten. She graduated from Kimberly High School in 1949. Julienne worked several years at Eiting's Supermarket and then as a loan officer for over twenty years at Kimberly Credit Union/Capital Credit Union. After retirement she worked several years at Piggly Wiggly. Julienne enjoyed golf, her card club and just about anything that could be done outdoors. She was an excellent cook and made the best chocolate cake and carrot cake! While living at American Grand she also became the Queen of Bingo! Her true pride and joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her four sons, Rick (Sue) Rusch of Darboy, Jim (Barby) Rusch of Oregon, Wisconsin and their son Ethan, Mick (Kim) Rusch of Appleton and their children, Andy and Jack, Tim (Becky) Rusch of Little Chute and their children, Nicole (Joel) Bruch and Patrick (Allie) Rusch; her great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Maddox Rusch, Hazel Bruch and another Baby Bruch on the way. She is further survived by one sister, Gretchen Hornung Price; a brother, Richard (Janet) Verbeten as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Julienne was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Rosanne Van Ryzin; her brother and sister-in-law, Francis (L. Marie) Verbeten; brother-in-law, Bob Hornung; her former husband, Maynard Rusch and his sisters, Laverne (Dick) Boehm and Pearl Belisle.

Richard Peter (Dick) Verbeten, 82, died July 3, 2016 in Winter Garden, FL. He fought a long battle with a Degenerative Vascular disease. He retired from Isleworth Golf and Country Club, in Windermere, FL, where he worked as a Golf Course Superintendent for Mr. Arnold Palmer. Dick was a treasure to his family and to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet Vanderheiden Verbeten; son, Mark (Jean); daughter, Vicki (Jeff) Strenski; son, Gregg (Chris); daughter, Susan (Tracy) and son, John (Pam), all residing in WI; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; also one sister, Gretchen Hornung Price of Fond du Lac.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Susan Verbeten; sister, Rosanne Van Ryzin; brother, Francis Verbeten and sister, Julienne Rusch.

Veronica "Vera" Kerkhoff Feldkamp, 98, Kaukauna, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. Vera was born on April 15, 1911, in Hollandtown, daughter of the late Andrew and Minnie (Van Lanen) Kerkhoff. On October 14, 1931, she was united in marriage to Bernard Feldkamp in Wrightstown. He preceded her in death on January 30, 1992. Vera was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was active in the Altar Society serving as President for many years.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law: Cletus and Marianne Feldkamp, Kaukauna; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Carol Van Rossum of Princeton, Patricia and Bob Schaefer of Kaukauna, and Mary Ann and Ted Vahovius of Tyler, Texas; a brother-in-law, Charles Janssen; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Kerkhoff and Mary Alice Kerkhoff. She will also be greatly missed by twenty grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, her daughter Elaine, her son and daughter-in-law: Roger and Rose Feldkamp, her son-in-law Jim Van Rossum, her grandson Todd Feldkamp, seven brothers, seven sisters, and numerous other relatives.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at St. Katharine Drexel Parish @ St. Mary Site, 119 West 7th Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Germaine P. Hutjens, 101, De Pere, passed away Sunday April 13surrounded by her family. The daughter of Peter and Johanna (Van Lannen) Liebergen was born July 18, 1912 in Wrightstown. Germaine married Henry Hutjens February 21,1933 at St Paul Catholic Church Wrightstown and Hank preceded her in death on June 3, 1991. Germaine was an active member of St Mary Catholic Church De Pere where she was a member of the Christian Ladies Society, Refunders Group and helped with the funeral dinners for many years. She also found great joy in meeting people through serving Meals on Wheels, as a prayer partner on the Rosary Team, and her active presence in visiting Nursing homes.
Germaine is survived by her children: Donald (Carol) Hutjens, Rose Ann (Gerald) Van Lanen, Doris Mancheski, La Verne (Fran) De Cleene, Janet (Ken) Krautkramer, Annice (Ron) De Cleene,Sue (Alan) Tetzlaff, Dale (Winnie) Hutjens. Grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grand children. Two sisters-in-law: Agnes Liebergen, Anita Hermsen. One brother-in-law: Myron Lotto. Numerous nieces and nephews. Germaine will be greatly missed by her best friend Angie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her brothers and sisters, grandson Al De Cleene, granddaughter, Tina Mancheski, great grandchildren Hannah Hutjens, Jessica Mancheski, and Jacob VanLanen.

She always had an open door policy and welcomed peop le to stop in for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. VanLanen, ClaytonClayton VanLanen, 82, Sobieski, died peacefully Wednesday evening, Apr il 6, 2005, surrounded by his family at Woodland Village, Oconto. The s on of the late John and Nellie (Van Duerzen) VanLanen was born Jan. 10, 19 23, in Wrightstown. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. On Nov. 1 3, 1943, he married June Warshall in Chase. Clayton had been employed at t he Red Owl Warehouse in Green Bay for 25 years. He and June also owned a nd operated VanLanen's Bar in Sobieski for 40 years. He enjoyed going to t he reunions of his army unit, the 602nd Engineers. Clayton loved fishin g, hunting, and he especially loved socializing, and being with people.Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Wanda VanLan en, Russell VanLanen, all of Orlando, Fla.; David VanLanen, Sobieski; Dona ld VanLanen, Stiles; Jeffrey and Peggy VanLanen, Little Suamico; seven gra ndchildren, John C. Colette Nytes, of Kaukauna, age 93, died on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at St. Paul Home. She was born on April 8, 1914 in Wrightstown, the daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Vanderhyden) Van Lanen. On June 3, 1937 she married Clem Vandehey and he preceded her in death on January 12, 1982. Colette and Herbert Nytes were married on August 29, 1983 and he preceded her in death on May 10, 1996. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a member of the Altar Society and sang in the church choir. Colette was a crossing guard and enjoyed sewing, painting, crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Tony) Grosso; stepson, Ron (Mary Kay) Nytes; grandchildren: Annette, Steven, Michael, John, Susie, Lisa, Brenda and Michael; sisters: Mary (Bob) Kessler and Sister Ann Jude and brother: William (Mary Lou) Van Lanen. Colette is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, brothers: Ruben, Ralph, Norbert, Francis and Eugene Van Lanen; daughter, Ethel Vander Burgt and a granddaughter Michelle Vander Burgt.
The family would like to give thanks to St. Paul Manor for the wonderful living environment they provided for Colette during the 10 years she lived there and to the many residents she called her friends.
The funeral liturgy for Colette will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and at the Church on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of mass.

Mary A. (Nelessen) Kessler, 95, formerly of Kimberly, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday, October 20, 2013. She was born October 28, 1917, daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Vander Heiden) Van Lanen. On May 30, 1940, Mary married Norbert Nelessen, and he preceded her in death on July 10, 1970. Then on November 24, 1976, she married Robert Kessler, and he preceded her in death on May 26, 2007. Mary was active in many different organizations including the Pierre Post #2778 of Appleton, a life member of the DAV Auxiliary of Appleton, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit to the William Verhagen Post #60 of Kimberly and she was also a member of the Fox Cities Chapter of the military order of the Cooties #29 of Appleton.
Mary is lovingly survived by her children: Cletus (Dianne) Nelessen, Donna Nelessen, Luella (Tom) Opsteen, Sharon (Charles) Mikkelsen, Cindy (Paul) Sanders and Carla (Paul) German; 13 grandchildren: Jeff (Michele) Nelessen, Brad (Katie) Van Cuyk, Ryun (Denise) Van Cuyk, Tara (Jon) Van Dyke, Aaron (Karmen) Opsteen, Crystal Lehmann, Ed Mc Amoil, Dawn Mc Amoil, Sara Mikkelsen, Ben Sanders, Jesse Sanders, Hannah German and Leah German; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sister Anne Jude Van Lanen, CSA; a brother, Bill (Mary Lou) Van Lanen; sisters and brothers-in-law: Dolores (Gene) Van Camp, Helen Diedrich, Dolly (Dale) Meulemans, Art Vosters, Ceil, Bernice, Marian and Rita Nelessen. Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 410 Wallace Street, Combined Locks, with Fr. Andrew Kysely officiating. Interment will be in Holy Spirit Cemetery, Kimberly. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the Mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Van Lanen, Francis P., "Fra n" KaukaunaAge 79, was called home to the Lord on Tuesday, April 8, 2003. He was bo rn to the late Francis and Catherine (VanderHeiden) Van Lanen in Wrightsto wn on July 22, 1923. On May 1, 1947, Fran married Beatrice Bruecker at S t. Patrick Catholic Church in Askeaton. She preceded him in death in Octob er, 1971. On August 4, 1973, he married Elizabeth "Becky" Van Thull-Clanc y, also at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She, too, preceded him in dea th in October, 1993.Fran and his new wife Beatrice began dairy farming in Askeaton. He farm ed for nearly 30 years. He was a progressive farmer, one of the first to i mplement a new concept of milking cows — the milking parlor. He and his fa cilities were instrumental in the development of innovative material and f orage handling systems. After retiring from farming, he worked for Hoida L umber Company in Green Bay, followed by Ariens Corporation in Brillion, wh ere he retired. After retiring and moving to Green Bay, he remained tempor arily employed as a lawn maintenance technician until the age of 72. Aft er selling his home in Green Bay, he took up residence at St. Paul Man or in Kaukauna in May of 2002.Besides being an avid Packer fan, his intere sts included membership in various church organizations, singing in chur ch choirs, and carpentry. Anyone close to Fran knew of his passion and ten acity for playing cards.
