    LEST WE FORGETOur branch of the Bachhuber family came to Wisconsin from Bavaria during the early South German emigration to America-July 31, 1846 being the date of their entry in New York aboard the Susan Drew sailing out of Le Havre, France.The first and second generation, European born, have long since passed away. The third generation, all American born, knew but little of the struggle and trial of these true pioneers-while in the succeeding generations they are but names from the dim past. Let us at least preserve their names for our offspring.
    It is 2007. I am of the 5th generation. I have two children (6th generation) and siblings who are grandparents of kids of the 7th generation. We are from the youngest "line". I think it is safe to say that the 8th generation of the Martin/Theresia branch of the Bachhuber family is roaming the land. I provide this brief snapshot of the first three generations of our family as a way of remembering them and also to, perhaps, foster some additional research by other members of the clan.
    Thanks go out to my cousin Jim Bachhuber from whom much of this information was obtained, Beth Steinberg Arnott, descendant of Johann, who provided critical information including a copy of Hugo Bachhuber's memoirs and Mike Benter whose research for his book Roll Out the Barrels: Brewers of Eastern Dodge County, Wisconsin, 1850-1961 is used here.

    Sometime in the 1960's my Dad (Robert, 4th generation, son of Emeron and Helen) gave me a mimeographed "family tree" displaying the first three generations of our branch of the family that someone had put together for a Bachhuber reunion in the 1930's. I've made a few minor wording changes to the document, added birth years and, if found in the various source materials utilized, German version of Christian names.
    Bach-- German: topographic name for someone who lived by a stream, Middle High German bach 'stream'.Huber-- German (also Hüber, Hueber): status name based on Middle High German huobe, a measure of land, varying in size at different periods and in different places, but always of considerable extent, appreciably larger than the holding of the average peasant. The surname usually denotes a holder or owner of this amount of land, who would have been a prosperous small farmer and probably one of the leading men of his village.
     Martin was born in Deglkofen (sp?), a small town that cannot be found on any present day map but according to family documents was located near Regensburg (also known as Ratisbon) in Nieder Bayern (Lower Bavaria). His passport listed him as a "kleingueter" or owner of a small farm. Theresia was born in Kelheim, on the Danube River (Donau), also near Regensburg. Their children were all born in Kelheim.
    There was a fifth child, Eligius, who died at the age of six, before the family's emigration to America.
    Maximilian was listed as a merchant on the 1860 census. This line produced many doctors and politicians, one of whom is currently serving as Governor of Wisconsin. The following is from Gov. Jim Doyle's website remembering his mother Ruth Bachhuber Doyle: "In 1948…she became one of the first women elected in the Wisconsin Legislature. She was the fourth generation of her family to serve…following in the footsteps of her father (Frank E. Bachhuber, 1933), grandfather (Andrew Bachhuber, 1885) and great-grandfather (Max Bachhuber, 1860, 1864 and 1875). The Bachhubers remain the only four generation family in Wisconsin history to win election to the state legislature."
    According to the memoirs of Maximilian's son Hugo, the Civil War "laid a heavy hand on the family. When the draft came father and Uncle Lorenz Weix were assigned to the colors. Father was not so situated that he could go as his brother Johann had just died, so he availed himself of the privilege of furnishing a substitute and Uncle Joseph Engel went in his place. For this service father assigned to Uncle Joe a house and several acres of land."
    The mysterious Johann. The family tree lists him as married to Frances Muenzner, however search of the databases and input from one of his descendants clearly indicates that Johann was in fact married to Franziska/Frances Lehneis. Why the Muenzner entry? His occupation was listed in the 1860 census as "Tavern Keeper". Johann was also called to serve in the Civil War but died of Typhoid Fever at the age of 30 before he could do so.
    Barbara and Lorenz had another child, Emmeran, not listed on the tree. Emmeran was John's twin who died shortly after his birth in 1878. Lorenz was listed as a farmer on the 1860 census. He served in the Civil War as a Private in the 45th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment
    Emmeran/Emeron--my great-Grandfather. What a name. Rare and, I trust, confusing to a lot of folks. Susan Drew's manifest actually had him listed (at least in transcription) as Emerencia. My German wife advised that Emeron is not a German name and it was only after much Googleing did I find that the version I could accept as a "good German" name was Emmeran, particularly apt for a boy born near Regensburg.     Emmeran was a master harness maker but in 1869 he also owned a brewery. It was the same brewery that his father, Martin, owned from 1855-1868.

    Obituary:
    Friday morning at 11:30 the bells of St. Mary's church tolled out the news of the death of an aged citizen of Mayville and soon it was generally known that Emeron Bachhuber Sr. had crossed the dark river of Death to the eternal shore beyond. For several weeks he had been suffering with heart trouble, thus his death was not entirely unexpected. But his departure leaves a great void in The Bachhuber home. His place can never be filled. He was widely known and esteemed by all who knew him.
    Emeron Bachhuber was born April 2, 1839 in Bayonne, Germany and at the age of seven years came to America with his parents. For five years they lived in Milwaukee and the next five at St. Lawrence. Since 1855 the Bachhubers have lived in our city, where the father of the deceased started up the first brewery, now Ziegler's.
    Mr. Bachhuber was married Aug. 29, 1863 to Miss Katherine Bauer by whom he is survived, as well as by the following ten children, all of whom are residents of Mayville which is remarkable: Theresa, Mrs. Albert Clark; John A.; Annie, Mrs. Anton Welsch; Barbara, Mrs. Anton Jansa; Joseph; Frank; Emeron Jr.; Miss Kathryn; Martin and Lawrence.
    The deceased was a competent saddler and held several offices of honor in our city. Thus he was city treasurer, Chief of the Fire department and Supervisor. He was one of the elders of St. Mary's church and he organized the local branch of Catholic Knights under whose auspices the funeral was held on Monday. The local fire department also attended in corpore. His six sons acted as pall-bearers to the church where the Rev. Father Heder conducted the service. The oldest members of the Catholic Knights then bore the remains to their last resting place in St. Nary's cemetery. May he rest in peace!

    Mrs. Anna Welsch, 105 E. Mill street, who was a native of Dodge County and who had resided in this city for the past half century, died at St. Joseph hospital at 2:50 o'clock yesterday morning. She was eighty years of age and had been in failing health for the past several weeks.
    The funeral services will be held at St. Peter church at ten o'clock Saturday morning. The high mass will be celebrated by her four nephews, Rev. Gerhard Budde of Clyman, Rev. George Budde of West Allis, Rev. John Budde of Hartford and Rev. Raymond Budde of Milwaukee. Interment will be in St. Peter cemetery.
    Anna Weix was the daughter of Lawrence and Anna Bachuber Weix and was born at LeRoy on January 25th, 1864. She was married to John Welsch in the fall of 1884, he preceding her in death on November 6th, 1916. She was a member of the Christian Mothers Society of St. Peter church, the Catholic Knights and the Catholic Foresters.
    She was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by the following children: Timothy J. Welsch; Mrs. Hildegarde Parker and Miss Hattie Welsch of this city; Mrs. Helen Josten of Milwaukee; Mrs. Kathleen Ostrow of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Anna Piszczek and Dr. John Welsch of this city. Eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, four brothers and one sister also survive: Michael Weix, Lawrence and John Weix of Colby, Wis., Xavier Weix of Oconomowoc, and Mrs. John Budde of the town of Beaver Dam. One son, Alphonse, preceded his mother in death.
    Friends may call at the fuenral home after seven o'clock this evening.

    Frank Bachhuber was born at the family's home farm in Farmersville, Dodge County, Wisconsin on November 17, 1884, the son of Andrew and Louise (Sterr) Bachhuber. He graduated from the Mayville High School in 1902, Marquette University in 1907, and the American Institute of Banking in 1912. He was employed as a special attorney for the Marshall and Ilsley Bank of Milwaukee from 1902 to 1922.

    Accomplishments:
    Mr. Bachhuber moved to Wausau in 1922 and practiced law for many years. He served as police and fire commissioner, was a director and secretary of the Franklin Building & Loan Association, a director and secretary of the Wausau Mortgage Company, vice president of the Marathon County Bank. He was elected to the Wisconsin state assembly in 1932. He was president of the Wausau Taxpayers League, a director of the Wausau Community Chest, a local instructor in banking for the American Institute of Banking. He was a member of the Marathon County Bar Association, the Wisconsin State Bar Association, and the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Bar Association.
    Frank Bachhuber was united in marriage in Juneau, WI on July 3, 1912 to Miss Mabel Foley, from Dodge County, WI. Together they were blessed with four children. Mr. Bachhuber was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin.
    Frank Bachhuber died at Mt. View Sanitarium in Wausau, WI on February 28, 1939. He is buried in Mayville, WI.

Sounds like fun though. One never knows who they are de aling with and why. We all knew Ramona as "Blue". She was an absolute ly delightful woman. She and Eddy had 7 children. Eddy was a Doctor a nd Surgeon. Three of their children are doctors, another is an arti st in Germany, the others I am not quite sure of their current involvement s. Eddy died a couple of years ago at the age of 87. Blue died maybe a m onth ago at the age of 86. They resided in Mayville, Wisconsin (my birthp lace) at the time of their deaths. They had lived in the Milwaukee area f or many years until Eddy retired from the practice of medicine. They mov ed back to Mayville, where Eddy was born, and lived there until their deat hs. Eddy graduated from Harvard Medical school, I can't recall the yea r. Blue was a tremendous athlete (ice skater) for her generation. Very I rish, outspoken woman.     Ruth Bachhuber Doyle passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2006, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease at the age of 89. Born in 1916, in Milwaukee and raised in Wausau, Ruth Bachhuber Doyle was the third child of Frank E. Bachhuber and Mabel Foley. In 1940, she married James E. Doyle, Sr. of Oshkosh, who she met at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who later became U.S. District Court Judge. In 1948, as a young mother of three, she became one of the first women elected to the Wisconsin Legislature. She was the fourth generation of her family to serve in the Wisconsin Assembly, following in the footsteps of her father (Frank E. Bachhuber, 1933), grandfather (Andrew Bachhuber, 1885), and great-grandfather (Max Bachhuber, 1860, 1864 and 1875). The Bachhubers remain the only four generation family in Wisconsin history to win election to the state Legislature. With her husband, Ruth Bachhuber Doyle helped rebuild the Democratic Party in Wisconsin. When she was elected to the Assembly, she was the first Democrat in decades and the first woman ever to represent Madison. Assemblywoman Doyle tried in 1951 to secure employment for a female applicant to the Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms staff. The Sergeant at the time refused to hire a woman, claiming that women would distract the male legislators. In 1952, Ruth Bachhuber Doyle ran unsuccessfully for State Treasurer, becoming one of the first women to ever run on her own for statewide office. She went on to serve with distinction as the only female member of the Dane County Board and was the first female president of the Madison School Board. In 1990, the School Board named the district's administration building in her honor. She is also recalled warmly by thousands of lawyers in the state for her notable service as longtime assistant to the Dean of the UW-Madison Law School. While at the University, she helped launch a successful initiative to recruit and retain minority students. She stayed in close touch with many of these students over the years, serving as a mentor and a friend. The Ruth Bachhuber Doyle Award is given annually to recognize the outstanding student contribution to the law school community. The James E. and Ruth B. Doyle chair is an endowed professorship that honors both her and her husband's signal service to the Law School. Ruth Bachhuber Doyle's commitment to education also came through in her work as a schoolteacher in the Oregon school district. It was part of a long and diverse career that showed that women could be successful in many fields. Doyle taught her children to never shy away from a challenge, and was proud that her three daughters and her son went on to successful law careers. In 2003, though suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease, she attended the inauguration of her son as Wisconsin's 44th governor. She is survived by three daughters, Mary, Catherine, Anne; and her son, James; son-in-law, James Brudney; daughter-in-law, Jessica Laird Doyle; eight grandchildren, Gus and Gabe Doyle, Joseph Pickman, Ruth and Nelle Rohlich, Edward, Henry, and Rose Brudney; great-grandson, Asiah Doyle; and a sister, Mary (Alan) Simmons.     Barbara Bachhuber VanLanen Verona Age 67, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 20, 2000, after battling bravely against lung cancer. Barbara was born on February 9, 1933, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the first of seven children born to the late Dr. Alphons and Priscilla H. Bachhuber. Barbara grew up in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, and graduated from St. Mary's Springs Academy in Fond du Lac. She graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota, and went to Marquette University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to obtain her degree in public health nursing. In 1960, Barbara married Daniel Van Lanen, and they had three children, Daniel Jr., Mary and Anne. Barbara was a devoted nurse, working with children and the elderly, until her retirement from the profession in 1989. Her love of children inspired her to become a nanny to various families in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area where she lived from 1987-1997. Barbara loved gardening, biking, her pets she had throughout the years, reading good mysteries, baking, classical music and playing her piano.
    Her grandchildren were the sunshine of her life. She left a special impression on anyone whose life she touched and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Barbara is survived by her daughters, Mary E. (John) Dahler of Madison, Wisconsin, and Anne T.     John Jacob Bachhuber, Appleton, age 75, died suddenly at home February 14, 2012. He was born to Alphonse and Priscilla (Haessly) Bachhuber on April 14, 1936. He grew up in Kaukauna and attended Champion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien. John graduated from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1958. After serving in the United States Army for two years he began work at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. For 24 years he enjoyed being the go-to guy for computer innovation. In 1983 he began work for Repap/Stora Enso/Midtec and continued there until his retirement in 1999.
    John enjoyed hunting with his brother, camping with his family and friends, his backyard garden and baking bread. He enjoyed membership in the Appleton Rifle and Pistol Club and the Misfits Golf League, bridge club and dinner with friends. He devoted his life to his family and Catholic faith.
    John is survived by his wife of forty-three years: Karen Bachhuber of Appleton; his children: Amy Bacon and her children: Oliver, Elliot, and Aspen of Portland, Oregon; John (Mary) Bachhuber and their children: Owen and Daniel of Roseville, Minnesota; Stephen (Leacey) Bachhuber and their son Henry of Efland, North Carolina; and Nathan Bachhuber and Layla Claire of New York City. He is also survived by his sisters: Pauline (Robert) Constable of Altadena, California and Jane (Ralph) Petrie of Fond du Lac; and brothers: Mark Bachhuber of Kaukauna and brother David (Lynda) Bachhuber of Bonne Terre, Missouri; and mother-in-law: Amelia "Amy" Henderson of Appleton.

    Mary Catherine Drechsler, 79, passed away on November 17, 2016 at St. Paul's Home. She was born August, 4, 1937 in Appleton, Wisconsin to Catherine (Dohr) Bachhuber and Dr. Alois Martin Bachhuber. She attended Holy Cross Elementary, Kaukauna High School and Alverno College where she majored in Nursing. After graduation, she worked at Kaukauna Hospital and continued at the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Hospital where she provided compassionate care for over 25 years. She was an active volunteer with King's Daughters, Homeless Connection and Loaves and Fishes food pantry.
    Survivors include her husband Henry of 56 years and children: Tim of Kaukauna, Tom (Mary Ellen) of Cranford, NJ; Mark (Christine) of Naperville, IL; Peter (LeeEllen) of Cincinnati, OH; Paul (Jennifer) of Mequon, WI; Sarah and Dan Wanish of Madison, WI and Andrew Drechsler and Beth Bangert of Washington, DC. Mary was very proud of her 14 grandchildren: Michael, Alexandra, Gabriel, Arianna, Nicolas, Lina, Zoe, Elliot, Anna, Jack, Miles and Ellis Drechsler. Katia and Danika Wanish. Mary is further survived by her brothers Nic (Jan) and Paul (Patti) Bachhuber and sister Ann Bill.
    Mary was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Susan Sachs, brother Peter Bachhuber and brother in law James Bill.
    The funeral liturgy for Mary will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, St. Mary's Church location, 119 W 7th Street, Kaukauna. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Mary's name.     Peter Alois Bachhuber, 71 died of prostrate cancer on April 18, 2015. Visitation will be Friday, May 15, from 6-8 p.m. at McGilley Memorial Chapel, 20 W Linwood, Kansas City, MO 64111. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 16, at St James Catholic Church, 3900 Harrison St, Kansas City, MO 64110 at 11 a.m.
    He was born on October 9,1943, in Appleton, Wisconsin, to Catherine Elizabeth (Dohr) Bachhuber and Dr Alois Martin Bachhuber. Peter was the 4th of 6 children. He attended Holy Cross Elementary and Kaukauna High School, where he played guard for the Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts and was co captain his senior year. He graduated in 1961 and attended St Norbert's College; majored in Economics, a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, and ROTC. After graduation in 1965 he completed his military obligation, serving 2 years as an MP in South Korea. Following his service he went to graduate school at the American Institute of Foreign Trade (Thunderbird) in Glendale, Arizona. Upon graduation, he was hired by Firestone Tire and Rubber in the International Division.
    Following stints in Sweden, England, and Italy he came back to the home office in Akron, Ohio in 1975. On Friday, February 13, 1976, Pete went for a drink with friends and met his future wife, Carol. Their first date was Valentine's Day and they married September 24, 1977. A few days later Peter left for a new job in Bari, Italy as Director of Sales. In 1979, they returned to the states and settled in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. The next move was to Kansas City in 1984, where he bought Shoring & Supply in 1989. The company grew to include stores in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, and California. Most of the stores were sold in 1999 and Pete became semi retired.
    Pete loved to hunt and fish, which began as a child with his Dad, brothers, and uncles in Wisconsin. He had fond memories of Muskie fishing with his Dad. When he moved to Missouri he leased land near Mound City for deer, geese, and duck hunting. Every weekend from September to December Pete was getting things ready to hunt or hunting.
    Another childhood enthusiasm was sports, playing and watching. He was a life long Green Bay Packer fan and had worked at the stadium in his youth just to see the games. He especially enjoyed attending games there the last couple of years with his brother, Paul. When the Packers weren't playing, he followed college sports as well.
    Skiing was another of his passions. It started in Wisconsin and grew when he lived in Europe and skied the Alps. After returning to the states he regularly skied in Colorado with friends and family. Every year he took his children skiing in Winter Park, Colorado and bought a log home near Winter Park when he retired. He always said, " We came for the winters but stayed for the summers." He learned to fly fish and enjoyed watching the wildlife.
    Pete and Carol loved to travel. They returned to Italy as frequently as possible. It always felt like home as Peter had lived there for 6 years and they spent the first years of their marriage there.
    Peter was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan Sachs (Dale). He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Ann Nicole of Kansas City; son, Fredrick (Michael Carr) of Denver, Colorado; and daughter, Alexandra of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Mary Drechsler (Hank), Kaukauna, Wisconsin; brother, Nicholas Bachhuber (Janet), Spokane, Washington; sister, Ann Bill (Jim), Williamsburg, Virginia; and brother, Paul Bachhuber (Patti), Green Bay, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
    In lieu of flowers donations may be made Missouri Ducks Unlimited or the Rocky Mountain Conservancy.

    Susan M. Sachs, age 60, of Appleton, passed away Monday evening, October 20, 2008, following a short illness. She was born April 6, 1948, to the late Dr. Alois and Catherine (Dohr) Bachhuber, in Kaukauna and had been an Appleton resident since 1972. Susan graduated from Kaukauna High School and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She was a lifetime teacher and enjoyed children and they enjoyed her. Susan loved cooking for family and friends, camping and watching the Packers.
    Susan is survived by her husband, Dale W. Sachs, to whom she had been married for 35 years; her daughter, Katherine Sachs, Appleton; five sisters and brothers: Mary (Hank) Drechsler, Kaukauna; Dr. Nic (Janet) Bachhuber, Spokane, WA; Ann (Jim) Bill, Williamsburg, VA; Peter (Carol) Bachhuber, Kansas City, MO; Paul (Patti) Bachhuber, Green Bay; her mother-in-law, Mildred (Sachs) Vandenberg, Kaukauna; six brothers and sisters-in-law: Daniel (Vivian) Sachs, New London; Jeanne (Daniel) Maes, Reeds Spring, MO; Doug (Ellyn) Sachs, Neenah; Joyce (Stan) Darling, Winneconne; Joanne (Doug) Young, South Charleston, WV; Chuck (Kay) Sachs, Shorewood, WI; many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral service for Susan will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 24, 2008, at Appleton Highland Memorial Park Chapel, 3131 North Richmond Street with Deacon Randy Haak officiating. Friends may call at the cemetery chapel on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established.

    Child Crushed Under Giant Road Grader M ILW AUKEE -(JP) - An adventurous four-year-old w as crushed to death W ednesday because he and his friends played " engineer" on a giant road g rad - er. The victim w as Edward Bachhuber, son of Dr. and Mrs. Edw ard A. Bachhuber. Young Edw ard and his pals had been fascinated by the street widening in progress near his house. When the workmen parked the equipm ent for the night, the youngsters swarmed over the grader. The machine was in gear, and started rolling when one of them accidentally stepped on the starter.
