Obituary:
Mary Louise Desotell, age 84, of Kaukauna, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Appleton Health Care Center with her family at her side. Mary was born on December 14, 1924, in Kaukauna, to the late August and Gabriel (Vermeulen) Merckx. She married Donald Desotell on October 1, 1949, in Kaukauna he preceded her in death on February 7, 1996. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed bingo, card playing and especially the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, Dan (Sue) Desotell, Freedom; her daughter, Karen (Scott) Funk, Kaukauna; her grandchildren: Lisa (Vince) Oliver, Amy Butler, and Becky Desotell; her great-grandchildren, Brandon Desotell, Jayden Butler, Tianna and Makenna Oliver; her sister, Muggy (Eugene) Ashauer, Kaukauna; her brother, Frank (Laura) Merckx, Kaukauna, and her sister-in-law, Evelyn Merckx, McFarland, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John Merckx.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her name.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Appleton Health Care Center and ThedaCare Hospice for their loving care.

Obituary:
Frank Merckx was born on September 17, 1927, to Belgian immigrants, August and Gabriel (Vermulen) Merckx, and went home to be with Jesus on January 14, 2011. He was 83 years old. Frank lived in Kaukauna his entire life and proudly served his country during World War II, from 1943 to 1948. The first year as a Merchant Marine and four years in the Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier, The USS Randolph, in the Pacific.
He married Laura Gendron on November 24, 1948, and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. Anniversaries were lovingly celebrated over the phone, because November 24th is deer hunting season and Frank was an avid hunter. Frank loved fishing, especially the last few years on Legend Lake with Ed. He enjoyed the times fishing with Tom, Hanna and Matt on the channel in Tom's backyard. Frank also enjoyed the time he spent on the boat on Lake Winnebago with Laura, as she tanned and he fished. He worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company and retired in 1990 at the age of 62.
Frank was a meticulous handyman, who was willing to lend his services to family and friends. He also loved big band music from the 40's and enjoyed his many years with the Cabernet Dance Club. In 2003, he had the opportunity to fulfill his lifelong dream of going to Belgium to visit his ancestral homestead. He visited the home his father was raised in and visited the baptismal font at the church where generations of Merckx's were baptized.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 62 years, Laura; three children, Bonnie (Phil) Hartzheim, Kay (Bruce) Petros and Tom (Sue) Merckx; grandchildren, Keely (Justin) Wilson, Quinn (Brian) Van Asten and Alex (Kristin) Hartzheim; Jason Bergeron, Matthew (Laura) Petros and Ryan Petros; Hanna Merckx; great-grandchildren, Trent and Shaylan Wilson; Sienna Hartzheim; Myah and Hailey Petros; sister, Margaret (Eugene) Ashauer; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Merckx, Yvonne Nelson and Neva Gendron. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Frank was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Dawn Marie; his sister, Mary (Don) Desotell; brother, John Merckx; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Laura Gendron; brothers-in-law, Dave Gendron, William (Connie) Gendron and Gilbert Nelson.
The funeral liturgy for Frank will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 17, 2011, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna. Father Tom Pomeroy will be officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass.
The family would like to thank the ThedaCare at Home Hospice, especially Leslie and Julie, and Dr. Jack Swanson for their care and compassion.

Merckx, John V. "The Old Man"
John Merckx, of McFarland, formerly of Kimberly, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at UW-Hospital, Madison. He was born October 19, 1934, in Kau-kauna, the son of the late August and Gabriel Merckx. John married Evelyn Alt on December 3, 1976, in Belleville, Wisconsin.
Dad fought a rare blood condition day by day, week by week and year by year and yet, he rolled with the punches and never backed down to this disease. We witnessed a man with great courage accepting each battle thrown at him and each time he came out a winner. Our Dad's positive attitude and love for his family was no match for this terrible disease. His sense of humor and will to live was our inspiration that we will carry with us the rest of our lives.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, McFarland; daughter, Andrea (Jonathon) Dobbs, Madison; eight sons: Perry, Combined Locks; Greg, Kevin "Whale" (special friend Barb Jahnke), Richard and Jonathan "Tonnage" all of Kimberly; Jamie "Zig" (Chris), Darboy; Paul "Fuzz" (Amy), Darboy and Brett (Corey), Oshkosh; mother of John's sons: Rita (Sam) Mazelin; 13 grandchildren: Keely, Taylor, Kiefer, Matthew, Kacie, Nicole (Tom) Veiau, Justin, Tyler, Kyle, Eryn, Amanda, Mason and Megan; two great-grandchildren: Alex and Cael; brother, Frank (Laura); sisters: Margaret (Gene) Ashauer and Mary "Mic" Desotell, all of Kaukauna. John is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Don Desotell.
The funeral liturgy for John will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Inurnment will take place at the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in his name.
The family would like to thank the Oncology Unit, all of the doctors, nurses and aids at the University Hospital in Madison, especially every one on 6th floor. A special thanks goes to Dr. Ann Mcbride, who was his primary doctor and a person he thought the world of.
He lived life to the fullest. Tim McGraw wrote a song "Live Like You Were Dying." Dad did just that and he had the chance to leave on his terms with dignity and grace surrounded by his family. I hope we all get the chance to live like we were dying the way our old man did.
Dad, you taught us well.
