    Obituary:
Early in the morning of June first, Susan Eileen Noffke lost her last struggle. Fighting against odds was nothing new, but the odds against winning against this form of cancer were just too great.
Born Feb. 5, 1949 to Roy and Lorraine (Liesch) Noffke in Appleton, Wisconsin, she grew up in the same neighborhood where her parents and grandparents grew up. She never forgot who she was or where she came from. Music was the first step on the path which led to her life's work. She attended the Lawrence Conservatory of Music on a scholarship based on her vocal ability. She soon changed to a devotion to education, which she held through the rest of her life. After graduation from Lawrence, her first job was in Warrens, Wisconsin, teaching elementary age children. She next moved to Madison, where she taught at Sennett Middle School and attended the University of Wisconsin, earning an MS degree in Curriculum and Instruction in1980 and PhD in 1990.
On Aug. 16, 1975, Sue married Robert Wickesberg, with whom she shared the rest of her life. She followed Bob to Germany, where he did post-doctoral work after he received his PhD from the UW-Madison, and Sue cared for their first child, Andrew Wickesberg. They returned to Madison, where Sue continued her graduate work at the UW College of Education and where their second child, Laura Wickesberg was born. Sue next moved to New York where she was an assistant professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her final move was to the University of Illinois - Champaign where she became an associate professor in Curriculum and Instruction. She was highly respected in her field and lectured in such varied locations as Australia, Columbia and South Africa. Her passion was to bring effective education to all people. Her specialty was "action research" which at core meant involving those in the classroom in developing more effective teaching methods. She will be remembered for her abiding respect for public school teachers and the importance of their work.
Sue is survived by her husband, Robert Wickesberg, Urbana, Illinois; son, Andrew Wickesberg and his wife, Katie, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; daughter, Laura Wickesberg, Brooklyn, New York; brother, Roy Noffke and his wife, Jane, Madison; sister, Lou Berryman and her husband, Mark Hodgson, Madison; father-in-law Albert Wickesberg, Minnesota; and brothers-in-law William, in Tennessee and James, in California. She is also survived by aunts Carol (Jerome) Van Dinter, Little Chute; Joan Nickasch, West Bend; Isabel Lowry, Racine; Jean Wydeven, Menasha; Barbara (Thomas) Flanagan, Appleton and Margaret Schley, Forest Junction; uncle Leo Huelsbeck, Menasha and countless cousins.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Lorraine Noffke and her mother-in-law Dorothy Wickesberg. A gathering of those who will remember her will be held later this summer. Sue's work as an educator influenced countless students; a page for sympathy and reminiscence has been established by her colleagues at University of Illinois, which can be read and shared. That URL is: http://blogs.education.illinois.edu/dean/2013/06/03/passing-of-a-colleague-and-friend-susan-e-noffke-june-2013/ Expressions of sympathy can also be made with a gift to the Urbana Free Library, Carle Foundation Hospital, or to a cancer charity of the donor's choice .
