When I was seven, she gave me my first Bible, carefully inscribed with her name. She died when I was 15 and perhaps because I cared for her, but was not as close to her as my grandparents, it was a perfect way to be introduced to the process of the end of life.

    I recall her bedroom in my grandparents home quite well. It was simple and tidy. On the dresser was a photograph of her husband, my great grandfather, Adolph Hilker, whom I never met. He looked to me to be a large robust man with the most marvelous mustache. And she was such a tiny thing. They must have been an interesting couple.

    Theodore Wickesberg, 92, a retired Town of Herman farmer, died Thursday at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wickesberg, R. 1, Elkhart Lake, Born in the Town of Herman on May 20, 1875, he was a son of the late August and Sophia Helming Wickesberg. He attended district school in Schwartzwald. On Nov. 9, 1901, he married Helen Renter, of the Town of Herman. The couple located on a portion of the Wickesberg home farm. Mrs. Wickesberg died Sept. 19, 1942. Since Mr. Wickesberg's retirement he made his home with his children. He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Town of Herman, and served as church deacon for many years. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Oscar (Edna) Franz, Sheboygan, Mrs. Calvin (Ruth) Stuckmann, R. 1, Sheboygan Falls, Mrs. Paul (Viola) Marten, R. 1, Elkhart Lake, and Mrs. Arvin (Esther) Gutenberger, R. 1, Sheboygan; three sons, Herbert, Walter and Paul, all of R. 1, Elkhart Lake; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Miss Lena Wickesberg, and a brother, Alvin, both of Franklin. Two infant daughters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Town of Herman, with the Rev. Robert Oppermann, pastor, officiating.     Grandma Simonsen was round and cheery. She never angered, but sometimes became "cross" if one was inappropriate in their behavior. During the summer stays at her house sugar cookies were consumed in infinite amounts. And, while her mother, great grandma Hilker was still alive, we made homemade applesauce. It was grandma Simonsen who taught me to use needle and thread. And it was she who tirelessly read to me when I did not feel well.

    Most Thanksgiving dinners were spent at her home, and what a cook she was. Grandpa always said the blessing and it must have worked because the food was wonderfully delicious.

    She never became "excited" in the conventional sense. For example, in the summer of 1964 I was spending my week at grandma's house. Grandpa pulled in to the driveway, not in the old bland white Pontiac, but in a "fire engine red" Dodge with a white stripe down the side. It had white interior and "push button drive." Grandpa was as excited as a kid with a new toy. Grandma stood in the door and all she could say was "Oh Melv. Oh Melv, I don't know." She was afraid of what the parishioners would say. Although it did not daunt her husband who convinced the small town church to put a pool table in its basement to keep kids off the street.

    As she aged, her hearing was compromised. After we all became tired of shouting, my mother finally convinced her to get hearing aids. She purchased the kind that fit into her glasses. And we laughed good naturedly when grandma would say, "Just a minute I can't hear you, I have to put on my glasses."
    She, along with my other three grandparents, loved me without limitation, but never failed to support my parents in setting guidelines and expectations.

    Esther Gutenberger, age 93, of 1009 N Wisconsin Dr., Howards Grove, died Sunday March 9, 2008 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice. She was born in the town of Herman on September 16, 1914, a daughter of the late Theodore and Helene (Kenter) Wickesberg.
    On November 10, 1934, Esther was united in marriage to Arwin Gutenberger at the home of her parents in the town of Herman. The couple purchased their farm in the town of Mosel in 1937. Arwin preceded her in death on September 2, 1968. Esther moved to Howards Grove in 1982.

    Louis "Louie" H. Borree, 93, St. Paul Home, Kaukauna, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008. He was born Dec. 4, 1914, in the Town of Harrison, son of the late Louis and Bertha (Haase) Borree. Louis served in the Navy as a Seabee during World War II. He married Rose Pomeranka on Feb. 26, 1945, in Menasha. She preceded him in death in 1998. Louis worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper and retired in 1977, after 36 years of service. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kaukauna, the Quarter Century Club and the American Legion.
    Survivors include a son, Thomas (Diane) Dunedin, Fla.; a daughter, Barbara (Gary) Jakobi, Marathon, Wis.; and a granddaughter, Kimberly, Atlantic Beach, Fla. He is also survived by two brothers, Ray (Janet) and Ralph, Kaukauna; a sister, Mildred Beford, Appleton; and nieces and nephews.
    Louis was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.
    The Christian Funeral for Louis will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at TRINITY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 804 Grignon St., Kaukauna, with Pastor Karl Schultz officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.

    Arthur H. Borree, Kaukauna, age 86, died on Saturday September 11, 2004 at Colony Oaks Care Center. He was born in Town of Woodville to the late Louis and Bertha (Haase) Borree. Art was baptized on November 20, 1917 and was confirmed on May 15, 1932. He married the former Irene Johnson on June 29, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She survives. Art served in the U.S. Army during WWII, after landing and making preparations in Australia, he fought at Aitape in New Guinea. Later, he left for the Philippines and was in assault waves on Leyte and Luzon. Art was on the beach when General Douglas MacArthur landed. He was a Gun Commander on M-10 Tank Destroyers and was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked at Thilmany for 40 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Art was a "Mr. Fixit" who was a simple, honest man and always put family first. He was very proud of the hunting cabin he built in Navarino and enjoyed many years of fishing and hunting.
    Art is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irene, five children: Dennis Borree, Ronald (Debbie special friend) Borree, Mary Borree, Nancy (John) Farrelly and their daughter, Colleen and Tim (Linda) Borree and their two children, Kayla and Shane. He will also be missed by his three brothers: Ray (Janet) Borree, Ralph Borree and Louis Borree, a sister: Millie (Bob) Bedford, two sisters-in-law: Sylvia Van Deraa and Jane Johnson.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law Harvey, six brothers and one sister.
    Art's Memorial Service will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday September 16, 2004 at the BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Drive, Kaukauna with Rev. Mark Luetzow officiating. Friends will be received at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Full Military Burial Rites will be performed at the funeral home after the service. A private family burial is planned at Ascension Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established to benefit Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church. The Boettcher Family Funeral Home is assisting the family.
    The family would like to thank Colony Oaks for their compassion and care they gave Art and also the many doctors who have helped him through the years.

    Raymond L. Borree, Kaukauna, age 96, died Sunday, December 18, 2016. He was born in Sherwood on January 27, 1920 to the late Louis and Bertha (Haase) Borree. Raymond married Janet Helf on August 23, 1947 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Kaukauna. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2015 after 67 years of marriage. Ray was an Army veteran serving in the 17th Armored Engineer Battalion in Africa and Europe. He worked at Thilmany Papers until his retirement in 1982. Ray enjoyed yard work, cutting grass, fishing at the cottage on Crane Lake and tinkering in his garage. He designed and built his own home. In the last few years he was a fan of drag racing at WIR.
    Ray is survived by his children: Rick (Marilyn) of Little Chute; Laurie (Patrick) Flynn of Darboy; and Sue (Casey) Rheinlaender of Keller, TX; grandchildren: Matt and Erin Kovalski and Clayton Rheinlaender; sister: Millie Beford; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Irene Borree, Dick, Jerry, Tom (Judy) , Kathy Helf and Nancy Peterson. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    In addition to his wife, Janet, and parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his siblings: Elizabeth (Hugo) Deno, Otto (Alice), Herman (Alexia), Alfred, Wally (Caroline), Harry (Ruth), Rueben, Louis (Rose), Art and Ralph Borree; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Bob Beford, Hank Peterson, Bob (Betty), Jim (Dottie), Belle and Shari Helf.
    Visitation will be held Thursday, December 29, 2016 at IMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST (510 Sullivan Ave. Kaukauna) beginning at 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral at 11:00 a.m. The Rev.     Mildred "Millie" Beford, Kaukauna, age 95, died on Wednesday May 24, 2017 at St Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton after a short illness. She was born October 29, 1921 in Calumet County to Louis and Bertha (Haase) Borree, the eleventh of twelve children, one of two daughters. On November 15, 1947 Millie married Robert "Bob" Beford in Menasha.
    Millie is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Arthur (Irene) Borree of Kaukauna WI in addition to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her sister Elizabeth (Hugo) Deno, and brothers Otto (Alice), Herman (Alexia), Alfred, Walter (Caroline), Harry (Ruth), Rueben, Louis (Rose), Arthur, Raymond (Janet) and Ralph.
    Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 510 Sullivan Ave, Kaukauna WI with Rev Gail Irwin officiating.     Ralph Borree, age 84, formerly of Neenah/Menasha, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010, at the St. Paul Home in Kaukauna, WI. He was born September 5, 1925, in the Town of Harrison, Calumet County, WI, son of the late Louis and Bertha (Haase) Borree. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Dundas, WI. Ralph relocated to the Neenah and Menasha area, where he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He retired from the Shipping and Warehouse Dept. of the Lakeview Mill of Kimberly-Clark, Neenah, after approximately 38 years. Being an outdoorsman, he later moved to a "fisherman's dream" home located on a channel in Omro. Ralph was an avid hunter, enjoying time with his relatives and friends at "White Tail" deer camp, Fence, WI. His bowling league success acquired him many award-winning trophies. Ralph also enjoyed gardening, golf, sheephead and belonged to a cribbage club. In addition, Ralph served as an usher at Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha, for many years.
    After only a short retirement, an unexpected health problem put him in a Care Center for almost twenty years. At the Care Center, he enjoyed playing Bingo, with the help of his late roommate George Vissers. "Thank You." The family greatly appreciated George's and Agnes Jeske's kindness and friendship to Ralph.
    Survivors are a brother, Raymond (Janet) Borree, Kaukauna; a sister, Mildred Beford, Menasha; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Arthur (Irene) Borree, Kaukauna; many nieces, nephews and friends. He is also survived by a special friend, Charlotte, to whom he was married 28 years.
    Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elizabeth (Hugo) Deno; eight brothers: Otto (Alice), Herman (Alexia), Alfred, Walter (Caroline), Harry (Ruth) Rueben, Louis (Rose), and Arthur; and a brother-in-law, Robert Beford.
    Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on February 27, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 Broad St., Menasha, with Rev. Steven Billings and Rev. Harley Kopitske officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m. Internment will be at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Ralph's name and can be mailed to 913 Shamrock Ct. Kaukauna, WI 54130.
    Ralph's family would like to thank Dr. Bruce Danz, Dr. Avi Bar-Lev and other doctors who treated Ralph through the years. Sincere thanks are also due to the Vallhaven Care Center and Colony Oaks Care Center.     She is best described by grandpa's phrase for her: "a slam dunker." Tireless and moving in only one gear, high speed, she constantly challeneged her children to exhort themselves and use all the talents God gave to them. Most often with praise, sometimes with shame, she moved them to find the best in themselves and perform to the optimum. From the standpoint of a child, one might best describe her as a coach: pushing, pulling, cheering, lauding, castigating, doing everything she could to mold them into productive givers to society. She was vocal, where her husband was silent, she was affirmative where he was reserved. There were times when the "Danish" was most apparent in her. It was, in short, a marriage of complimentary personalities. And it can be said that they truly were partners.

    Ruth Marie Tuchscherer, 82, of Avon Park, FL, passed away peacefully June 01, 2016, with Ted, her husband of 65 years and Peanut, their Yorkie at her side. Ruth resided at Highlands Ridge in Florida the past 20 years but she never stopped calling Menasha, WI home. She remained a member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church. Along with her husband, Ted, she is survived by her daughter Jerilyn Abba of WI. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Appleton Highland Memorial Park Chapel. Visitation begins at 10:00 am and Pastor Dave Skarsten of St. Tim's will officiate at the 11:00 am service. Special thanks to Mary and Dana of Vitas Hospice Services for caring for Mom the past 8 months.

    Mary Lou Borree, Appleton, Age 56, our dear daughter, sister and aunt, died unexpectedly on Monday, March 19th 2012, at home. Mary was born January 31, 1956 to Arthur and Irene (Johnson) Borree in Kaukauna. She attended Kaukauna High School and graduated from the school of cosmetology. She worked in various jobs over the years. Mary was an avid Packers fan and enjoyed taking care of her parakeets. She showed much compassion over the years especially during her father and brother's illnesses. She enjoyed spending as much time as she could with her nieces and nephew and loved them dearly.
    Mary is survived by her mother, Irene Borree; two brothers, Ron (Debbie) Borree and Tim (Linda) Borree and their two children, Kayla & Shane; one sister, Nancy (John) Farrelly and their daughter, Colleen; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
    She was preceded in death by her father, Art, and a brother, Dennis.
    Memorial Services for Mary Lou will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2012, with Rev. Karl Schultz officiating, at Boettcher Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna.
