Michael Opsteen, of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, age 63, passed away on Monday, January 25, 2010, after a year-long struggle with brain cancer. He was born in Appleton on September 29, 1946, to John and Ann (Spierings) Opsteen. After his graduation from Kimberly High School in 1964, Mike attended UW-Oshkosh. He served his country in Vietnam from 1966 - 1967, in the 552nd Military Police Company. After returning from Vietnam, he finished his degree in Art Education. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially the yearly Opsteen Invitational Fishing Tournament. His last residence was in Fremont.
He is survived by his mother, Ann Opsteen, brothers: Bob (Sue), Tom (Luella), Jim (Joan), Dave (Nancy) sisters: Barb (Dave) Schreiber, Mary (Greg) Fabisiak, Patty (Donn) McGowan, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father.
The Memorial service will be on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Chapel of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. The visitation will be Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
The family would like to express their appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, especially the staff of 2 East MacArthur Hall, and the VA Clinics in Appleton and Milwaukee.
