Rantoul Farmer Is Held On Murder Charge; May Be Examined CHILTON - Herman Skahen, 82-year-old farmer of Rantoul, Cal- umet county, was held in the county jail here today on a charge of having slain his son. Joseph Ska- hen, 58, with a hammer after a quarrel early today. Sheriff Gerhard Jensen said the aged farmer had confessed to striking the blows. Joseph was found fatally injur- ed in his bed about 2 a. m. by a brother, Daniel, upon the latter's return home. Attracted to his brother's room, Daniel found him with his head crushed. His assailant apparently used a claw hammer, found on the floor near the bed. Daniel immediately summoned Dr. J. J. .Minahan, the county coro- ner, who called Sheriff Jensen and District Attorney Edwin Eick. The father, who appeared feeble and dazed, said he had struck the blows after his son had used obscene language to him, the sheriff said. Something Told Him "Something seemed to tell me I should put my son out of the way," the sheriff quoted the man as saying. The son was taken to a hospital here, where he died at 8 a.m. A coroner's jury this morning reported that the son had met death as a result of being struck on the head by a blunt instrument. Dr. J. W. Goggins testified that he died as a result of a fractured skull and that there were 16 or17 marks of the hammer on the head. All of the chest bones had been fractured, he said. The district attorney then ordered Herman Skahen held on a charge of murder. He said, how- ever, that he would ask that the murder charge hearing be stayed pending a mental examination of the prisoner. The prisoner was reported to have quarreled with his son over the distribution, of some land. Frank .M. Dougal of Kaukauna was at the home during the time the attack was said to have taken place. Dougal was awakened by Daniel Skahen and said he heard no sounds of an argument or of a fight.
