Retired Little Chute physician Dr. Francis Van Lieshout earns Health Care Volunteer Award at Celebrating Our Volunteers 2011
APPLETON - If "Celebrating our Volunteers" mimicked the Oscars, Dr. Francis Van Lieshout would have been a shoo-in for the lifetime achievement award.
The Health Care Volunteer Award he receives Tuesday touches just one side of his lifelong volunteer resume.
"If you have time, treasure and talent, you have to share that," he said. "There are people in need who have to be helped."
Van Lieshout, 83, a retired Little Chute physician, is often called "Dr. Van" or simply "Doc." He worked pro bono when he knew someone didn't have money and was quick to jump in anywhere he saw a need. He was so appreciated by his community that a park was named in his honor in 1999.
His volunteer activities kept him serving the Fox Cities area before and after his retirement more than a decade ago.
He has sorted items at St. Vincent de Paul, for example, since 1998 and has been "the epitome of a loyal, dedicated, selfless volunteer," said volunteer coordinator Sister Jean Peerenboom, who nominated him.
"He doesn't think he deserves the award, but we know different," she said.
Van Lieshout graduated from Marquette University's School of Medicine in 1955. About five years later, he was diagnosed with cancer and had a colostomy. He counts what happened next as his most profound gift to others.
"My biggest contribution is the establishment of the colostomy group," he said. "There was a great need for education and support. Most people didn't want to talk about colostomy or cancer of the bowel. It was just such a terrifying thing."
He and a nurse at Appleton's St. Elizabeth Hospital started the group in 1965, when support groups were a radical idea. The group still meets monthly.
"To my knowledge, we were the first group of this nature," Van Lieshout said. "I had several people who told me they were contemplating suicide. They said, 'If you wouldn't have talked to me, I don't think I could have made it.'"
In 1998, Van Lieshout approached St. Vincent's about starting a small in-house clinic for the poor. Its leaders were skittish about the concept and instead invited him to stay as a volunteer. He did, and in 2010 alone logged more than 400 hours.
Each "Celebrating our Volunteers" honoree designates a charity to receive $5,000. As a passionate pro-life advocate, Van Lieshout chose Mother & Unborn Baby Care in Appleton, a nonprofit group that helps young women who choose to give birth rather than abort. They provide clothing, diapers, formula, child care and advice on finances and school.
"He's a wonderful person with a big heart," said M.J. Clements, the group's executive director. "He definitely deserves this award because he does so much for the community and for everyone."

    Obituary:
William Francis Van Lieshout, 57, Oshkosh, passed peacefully into eternal life in his home on Thursday, June 16, 2011, surrounded by his family. His passion for teaching and coaching youth athletics, especially tennis was known throughout the State of Wisconsin. He was affectionately known as Bill, Mr. V, or Coach Van Lieshout.
Bill was born on August 1, 1953, in Oswego, New York, the son of Joseph and Mary Jane Bevers Van Lieshout of Menasha. On June 20, 1981, he married Sandra J. Galioto in Milwaukee.
A lifelong resident of the Fox Valley, Bill was a Physical Education Teacher at Merrill Middle School in Oshkosh for 30 years where he coached basketball, volleyball, wrestling and track. He was the Boys and Girls Tennis Coach at Oshkosh North High school for 27 years, advancing an entry to the WIAA State Tennis Tournament every year but one. He graduated from University Wisconsin-Madison where he was a member of the Men's Tennis Team and received his masters degree in physical education from Northern Arizona University.
Tennis was a large part of Bill's life, both personally and professionally. Bill met his wife Sandy, while teaching at the Bachman-Laing tennis camp at Lawrence University in Appleton. He was a member of the USPTA, USRSA, past president and hall of fame inductee of the Wisconsin State High School Tennis Coaches Association. His summers were spent teaching Rec Department tennis lessons at Menominee Park. Helping to spread grassroots tennis, he founded Oshkosh Tennis Association Program at North High School. He pioneered the project to update the Oshkosh North High School Tennis Facility, which was recognized by the USTA at the 2009 U.S. Open as an Outstanding Facility. Bill was the proud father of the USTA Midwest Tennis Family of the Year. In 2010, Bill received the Hometown Hero Award in Madison. He was humbled by awards he received for working hard and following his passion.
The little free time Bill had was spent working on his collection of Corvairs, traveling with his wife and children, and finding ways to give back to the community. He was always available to lend a helping hand to someone in need. Bill never gave up on anyone or anything. His fighting spirit was evident to all who knew him.
Throughout the last two years of living with terminal illness, Bill defied all odds, living life to the fullest. He exemplified his teaching and coaching by demonstrating his passion for life, strength, hope, determination and perseverance. Bill was known for many sayings, but most notably, "Never give up." He will be sadly missed.
Bill is survived by his wife, Sandra; two sons, Matthew (Melanie) Van Lieshout, Santa Barbara, Calif., Peter Van Lieshout, Bradenton, Fla.; one daughter, Marjorie Van Lieshout, Shorewood,Wis.; his mother, Mary Jane Van Lieshout, Menasha; two brothers, Tom (Mary) Van Lieshout, Jim (Mary) Van Lieshout; two sisters, Joan (Jack) Ewig, Barb (Rich) Rueth; sisters-in-law, Debora (Larry) Howe, Tamara Galioto, Andrea (John Evans) Galioto; one brother-in-law, Thomas (Ellen Biever) Galioto; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas and Joan Galioto; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Van Lieshout.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at 10 a.m at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish-St. Peter Church with the Rev. James Jugenheimer officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 20, 2011, at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Westside from 2 to 7:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 and will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will take place in St. Margaret Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Bill's name.
The family would like to thank the Oshkosh Community and Wisconsin Tennis Community for their support.
