    Sister Fidelis

    Obituary:
Sister M Fidelis (Gertrude) Gossens of the Humility of Jesus, passed away Monday September 27, 1993 at the age of 88. She was the daugther of Mary (DeCleene) and Herman Gossens. Sister Fidelis was born on December 19, 1904 in DePere, Wisconsin. She later moved with her family to Kimberly, where, as a young woman she came in contact with the Franciscan Sisters at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. After working in the Hospital there for some time she joined the community March 2, 1922, in St. Louis, missouri where she trained as a nurse at St. Anthony Hospital. Her first assignment was in the dietary department and this led to a BS in dietetics from Fontbonne College in St. Louis. From there she was sent for a Masters degree in public health at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where she saw the devastating lives of the inner-city poor. Back then there were no social agencies around to help. Sister Fidelis has lived a lifetime ahead of her times. Long before holistic medicine was valued by the medical establishment, Sister Fidelis was meeting the medical, psychological and spiritual needs of the poor in a Milwaukee clinic she founded in the 1930's. Sister Fedelis taught briefly at the Marquette University College of Nursing in Milwaukee before being called to St. Michael Hospital where she also served as director of nursing service and personnel. Then, in 1938 she became director of St. Michael Hospital Clinic. Those were the Depression years when so many people were out of work and had no place to go for healthcare for themselves and their families. So she began providing medical care to poor unwed mothers through the outpatient department. Services soon expanded to include low-income families in need of maternity services and a new clinic was born. It would add 25 services in years to come. A need that quickly became apparent to Sister was a alcoholic treatment program, one of the first hospital-based. Marriage and family life counseling were provided early on and later psychiatric and pyschological were added. In 1947 Sister was appointed administrator of St. Michael and local superior. Before she was able to complete her term, she was elected as Assistant Provincial Directress and moved to the Motherhouse in Wheaton. She served two terms as Assistant and then a six-year term as Provincial Directress. She was instrumental in founding the first foreign mission of the American Province in Santarem, Para, Brazil and later spent seven months there working in the clinic and watching the efforts of her vision become a reality. In 1968 Sister volunteered to serve at the Generalate in Rome and spent two years there. Upon returning she served as procurator for the Brazil mission until her retirement to quiet years of prayer and contemplation. She is surived by brothers Joseph (Marie) Gossens, Norbert Gossens, Rene (Norma) Gossens, sister Cecilia (Frank) Brooks and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, brother Arthur (Ole), (Kate) Gossens, sisters Sister (Catherine) Illumina Gossens and Agnes (Fred) Never.

    Obituary:
Sister M Illumina (Catherine) Gossens of the Humility of Jesus passed away April 26, 1990 at the age of 83. She was the daugther of Mary (DeCleene) and Herman Gossens. Catherine (Sister Illumina) Gossens was born February 11,1907, in DePere, Wisconsin. In 1918 the Gossens family moved to Kimberly. In July, 1923, Catherine entered the Franciscan Sisters in St. Louis, where the motherhouse was then located. In 1929, she took her final vows and also received an R.N. from the St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing. She later (1937) received a B.S. in education from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee. In 1933, Sister Illumina came to Milwaukee to work at St. Joseph's Hospital. She stayed there 20 years, 14 years as night supervisor, one year as medical nursing unit supervisor, and five years as supervisor of the obstetrics department. Next, she returned to St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis, where she was supervisor of the obstetrics department from 1953 to 1961. In 1961, Sister Illumina returned to Milwaukee, this time assigned to St. Michael Hospital (which was founded in 1941 and moved to the present site in 1957) as nursing service director. Sister Illumina became president of St. Michael in 1964. She held the position for eleven years. During her tenure, the hospital grew dramatically, to 405 beds with the addition of the north units, and in programs, services, medical staff size, quality and reputation. Like her father, all four of her brothers, a sister and several nieces and nephews, Sister Illumina, in 1973, was for a short while an "employee of sorts" for Kimberly Clark. She spent a day at a studio in Chicago filming a 30-second TV spot for Kimbies disposable diapers. She and two 10 month-old babies were the "stars" of the commercial, which was subsequently aired many times. Sister Illumina received a substantial talent fee for her day's work, which she divided between the building fund for the north addition and a fund for retired Franciscan sisters. Sister Illumina lives in community with three other Wheaton Franciscans in a small home on 25th Street, across from the hospital. Because she often works evenings and weekends, she finds time on spring and summer days for her two favorite leisure pursuits, fishing and gardening. Her large fruit and vegetable garden is varied, weedless and productive! One summer morning, Sister Illumina paused after several hour's work in the garden, to reflect on her life and the joy and satisfaction she finds in what she is doing. "I am very fortunate to be still a partner in the Lord's work," she said. "Although I have always been happy in my choices to become a nun, and to go into nursing and hospital administration, I think the time I have now to be with people when they are sick and afraid and to listen to them and pray with them is the greatest luxury I have ever enjoyed." She is survived by brothers Joseph (Marie) Gossens, Norbert Gossens and Rene (Norma) Gossens, sisters Sister (Gertrude) Fidelis Gossens, Agnes Never and Cecilia (Frank) Brooks and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Mary (DeCleene) and Herman Gossens, brother Arthur (Ole) (Kate) Gossens, brother-in-law Fred Never.

    Obituary:
    Sister Mary Conrad Van Straten
Born to earthly life: March 19, 1915, Religious profession: August 2, 1935, Entered eternal life: February 1, 2010
In the 1930s, large Catholic families were the norm, but the Van Straten family of eight children was far from normal. Of the eight, the six girls were "sandwiched" between the two boys, one on each end, and of those six, five became School Sisters of Notre Dame. Sister Mary Conrad was the fourth of the five girls to enter the convent.
Born in 1915 to Peter Van Straten and Louise DeCleene in DePere, Wisconsin, and baptized Lillian, she thrived on the hard farm work before and after the school day, but she also relished the family fun. "Though we may have had little," she wrote, "we had everything. We were loved."
After graduating from DePere High School in 1932, she told her mother about her desire to become a Notre Dame, evoking her mother's main concern, "Child, I hope you are not going because your three sisters have gone." Assuring her mother, Lillian entered the Candidature, and three years later was professed as Sister Mary Conrad.
This began her journey of 26 years as a grade school teacher, followed by 25 years of teaching math in high school. At three schools, she had the added duties of being the principal or assistant principal. In two of the mission communities, she was also the local leader. She carried her many responsibilities with characteristic intensity and drive, along with a concern for others that was bolstered by a deep trust in the power of prayer.
Connie's favorite quote was, "The seed of God is in us." Typical of her zeal and generosity to spread that seed, at age 74, she accepted a request to direct the RCIA program at St. Mary's Parish, Menasha, Wisconsin. Moving to a small parish house, she delighted in hosting small group sessions of adults, where her warm hospitality and joyful spirit made religion come alive.
She spent four more years as a volunteer in the RCIA program in Omro, Wisconsin, before retiring at Notre Dame of Elm Grove in 1997. There she joined her Sister-sisters and tended her growing seeds until her death in 2010.
    – Marie Le Clerc Laux, SSND
Sister Mary Conrad professed her first vows in 1935 and would have celebrated 75 years as an SSND this summer. She received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in mathematics and minors in chemistry and English from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee and a Master of Arts in education from the University of Detroit.
Sister Mary Conrad served for over 50 years as a teacher and administrator. In later years, she worked as the director of a parish RCIA (Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults) program, as well as a part time teacher and volunteer in community service. In 1997, she retired to Notre Dame of Elm Grove where she ministered through her prayers and presence.
    Her ministry locations included:
    St. Anne School, Milwaukee, Wis.
St. Peter School, Beaver Dam, Wis.
St. Mary School, Fort Wayne, Ind.
St. Gabriel School, Prairie du Chien, Wis.
    St. Michael, Chicago, Ill.
Catholic Central High School, Marinette, Wis.
    Caroline Academy, Mequon, Wis.
St. Mary Central High School, Marinette, Wis.
    St. Mary Parish, Menasha, Wis.
    Wisconsin Volunteer Service, Omro, Wis.
Notre Dame of Elm Grove, Elm Grove, Wis.
Sister Mary Conrad is survived by her sister Sr. Mary Louise Van Straten, SSND, sister-in-law Rosemary Van Straten, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and the SSND Community. A Wake Service and Mass of Christian Burial were celebrated February 4, at Holy Family Chapel, Notre Dame of Elm Grove, 13105 Watertown Plank Road. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the School Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund is appreciated.

    A limb has fallen
    from the family tree
I hear a voice that says,
    "Grieve not for me."
    Remember the good times,
    The laughter, the song.
    The good life I lived,
    when I was strong.
    Continue my heritage,
    I'm counting on you.
    Keep smiling and surely,
    the sun will shine through.
    My mind is at ease,
    my soul is at rest.
    Remember the good things,
    I truly was blessed.
    Continue traditions,
    no matters how small.
    Go on live your life,
don't just stare at the wall.
    I miss you all dearly,
    so keep up your chin.
    Until the day comes,
    we're together again.

One-time De Pere mayor and longtime community activist Vic De Cleene died Thursday, July 7, at his home after a brief battle with leukemia. He was 90.
De Cleene was an alderman in the city from 1964 to '76 and 1987 to '95. He became acting mayor in September 1995 after Nancy Nusbaum was elected Brown County executive, serving until her term expired in 1996.
De Cleene retired from public office after that, but he continued to serve his community for more than a decade as an American Red Cross bus driver, Meals on Wheels volunteer and secretary of the De Pere Men's Club, among several activities.
"He was all about making life easier for someone else," De Pere's Larry De Cleene, one of Vic's seven children, told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "He delivered Meals on Wheels to people 20 years his junior."

    Life,s Clock
The clock of life is wound but once and no man has the power to tell just where the hands will stop at late or early hour. To lose one's wealth is sad indeed. To lose one's health is more. To lose one's soul is such a loss as no man can restore. The present only is our own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in tomorrow for the clock may then be still.
We will sadly miss you. Love your family and friends.
