It having been announced that a village would be laid off in the town of Ellington, the citizens were asked to vote upon a name for such. village and "Ellington Center" was chosen.

    Biography:
ALEXANDER LAIRD, who has been closely identified with the agricultural interests of Outagamie county for a number of years, is now living retired on his fine farm in Ellington township, which is being operated by his son. He was born January 11, 1840, near Belfast, Ireland, and received his education in that vicinity, although he had to leave school at the age of fourteen years to take charge of the home farm, his father, William Laird, having died. When he was seventeen years of age he left the Emerald Isle and came to the United States with his mother, brothers and sisters, and from Fond du Lac, at which city the road stopped, the little party walked to Ellington township. The mother purchased land in Bovina township, Outagamie county, and Mr. Laird worked on that property for twelve years. In 1868, Mr. Laird returned to Ireland, where he was married to Agnes Jamison, a native of that country, and on their return to the United States they settled on Mr. Laird's present home in Ellington township. For many years Mr. Laird was engaged in mixed farming and dairying, but he has now given up active work and is living a quiet life, enjoying the fruits of his early labors. He has lived to see the country grow from a vast stretch of wilderness to a flourishing, prosperous country, and his own farm develop from so many acres of heavy timber to one of the finest farming lands in Ellington township. In 1906 he erected the present handsome residence, and other good buildings grace this tract. Mr. Laird has been a member of the township board for several terms. He and Mrs. Laird are consistent members of the Congregational church, and have been the parents of seven children, namely: Elizabeth, Agnes, William L., Letta, John, Alexander and Katherine. Alexander Laird is now operating the old homestead farm.

    Biography:
WILLIAM LAIRD, who is engaged in general farming in Ellington township, is a worthy representative of one of Outagamie county's pioneer families. He is a son of Alexander Laird, who was born in Ireland in 1840, and came to the United States in 1857, locating in Ellington township, where he has continued to reside ever since, with the exception of a period when he returned to the old country to marry Agnes Jamison. They had a family of seven children. William Laird was born August 12, 1873, on his father's farm in Ellington township, and he first attended the district schools of this locality. Later he went to the Appleton high school for some time and later took the agricultural course in the University of Wisconsin. He worked on his father's farm until his marriage, in 1901, to Zella Sykes, who was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, daughter of William and Sarah Sykes, the former a native of New York State and the latter of Appleton. Some time prior to his marriage, Mr. Laird had purchased his present farm, formerly known as the Hunter farm, and this he has brought up to a high state of cultivation, by intelligently using scientific methods. He does mixed and dairy farming, keeping a number of purebred Holstein cattle, and his product meets with a ready sale in the markets of this section. Since locating on this property, Laird has erected a fine, modern residence and substantial barns and outbuildings, and has improved it in many other ways, making it one of the fine farms of this section. Mr. Laird is independent in his political views, voting for the man rather than the party. He is a great advocate of education, and has been connected with educational matters here for some time, serving as treasurer of the school district for four years. He and Mrs. Laird are consistent members of the Congregational Church of Ellington. They have four children: Margaret, Dorothy, Grace and Katherine.

    Obituary:
Thomas Raymond Fischer, age 72, of Black Creek passed away unexpectedly on May 29, 2014 due to an accident on his farm. Tom was born on May 14, 1942. He was the fourth child and the only son of the late Raymond and Katherine (Laird) Fischer. Tom was a graduate of Shiocton High School in 1960 and went on to serve six years as a proud member of the US Navy. On August 22, 1964, he married his wife of almost 50 years, Bonnie (Miller). Together, they raised six children who gave them fifteen grandchildren.
On July 4, 1966, Tom and Bonnie took over the family farm. Farming was one of Tom's passions. After selling the milking cows several years ago, Tom continued to cash crop. He continually pushed off his retirement. First to age 65, then 70, and most recently, 75. He was a kind neighbor to his fellow farmers and always had time to lend a helping hand.
Tom was an avid sportsman. He was a huge Packer fan and a former Cub fan converted to Brewer fan. In recent years, Tom and Bonnie could be found traveling to many Brewer games. Tom also enjoyed his many years of coaching softball at Shiocton High School leaving a lasting impression on the lives of many.
Tom's strongest passion was his family. He taught kindness and compassion to his children and grandchildren and showed unconditional love and acceptance to all. He was a true patriarch to his family leading them in how to be good people. He gladly participated in both the educational and athletic careers of his children and grandchildren and was always there with a positive word.
Tom is survived by his wife, Bonnie. His children, Brenda Fischer, New London, and her children, Ryan (Nicole) Wockenfus, and Kaley Wockenfus; Brian (Karen) Fischer, Shiocton; Susan (Thomas) Kraus, Oshkosh and their children Bailey, Carson, and Regan; Donna (William) Allen of Greenville and their children, Taylor, Morgan, and Kyle; Rebecca (BJ) Young, Shiocton, and their children Sawyer, Jackson, and Abigail; and Jennifer (Bradley) Ritchie, Shiocton, and their children Sydney, Caleb, Hayden, and Reid. He is further survived by three sisters; Barbara (David) Jochman, Joan (Leo) Bernardin, and Karen (Ronald) Groth. He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother- and father-in-law, Charles and Anna Miller, and brother-in-law, Patrick Miller.
The Funeral Mass for Tom will be held on Monday, June 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church (N3686 State Road 76 in Hortonville, WI,) with Fr. Joseph Nsereko and Deacon Ken Bilgrien officiating. Friends and family may pay their respects directly at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Fox Valley Spina Bifida Support Group, W9706 Bonnin Rd., New London, WI 54961.
To a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, brother, and friend; but most importantly, the best man we ever knew. We will miss you and we love you always.
