    Van Asten, Virgil Marvin "Vir g"Virgil Marvin Van Asten, age 70, of Appleton, passed away Monday, Augu st 8, 2005, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 11, 19 35, in Appleton, the son of the late Albert and Ella (Kuhn) Van Aste n. He was united in marriage to Janet Kippenhan April 7, 1956, in Appleto n. Virgil graduated from Neenah High School, starting his working li fe at Appleton Machine, Valley Iron, Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, then F ox River Paper Co. as a draftsman and engineer for 19 years. Virgil join ed Theo Utschig Construction and finished his career as a project manag er for Lunda Construction Industrial Division. He proudly served our count ry from 1953 to 1962 as a member of the Army Reserves.Virgil is survived by his wife, Janet, four sons: Scot (Victoria) Van Aste n, Oshkosh; Robert Walter Van Asten, Shiocton; Rocky (Laurie) Van Asten, M adison; Virgil A. (Cynthia Bork) Van Asten, Appleton; daughter, Debra (Dav id) Guckenberger, Ashippun. He will be especially missed by his beloved grndchildren: Thea and Blake Van Asten, Abby and Arik Van Asten, David, Joh n, Matthew and Alex Guckenberger. He is also survived by four brothers a nd sisters: Gugiland (Jacqueline) Van Asten, Larsen; Ronald Van Asten, Bur nsville; Charlotte (Michael) Dorow, Appleton; and Darlene (James) Kneif l, New Glarus; and many other relatives and friends.
    His parents preceded him in death.Virgil was dedicated to his family and his work. He was always one to be h elping, fixing and building. He had tools to fix most anything in wood a nd metal, including a sawmill on his farm. Deer hunting was never missed f or 50 years. Also he enjoyed fishing, camping, scouting and square dancin g. Cancer came in 2003 and removed his energy and plans for retirement fun .The family is being assisted by Valley Funeral Home and suggests a memori al to one's favorite charity in lieu of other expressions of sympathy.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 13, at 10:30 a.m. at t he Columbus Club, Appleton, with fellowship to follow.

    Obituary:
    Dean Van Asten, age 58 of Waupaca, died on Friday afternoon, July 28, 2017, at ThedaCare Medical Center in Neenah, following a brief illness. His parents, Guyland and Jackie (Thiex) Van Asten welcomed Dean into their lives at that very same hospital on December 3, 1958. He was one of four children born to the couple. At the time of his passing, Dean had been working as a truck driver for Michels Construction.
    Everyone will remember Dean as a guy with a great sense of humor and a big heart. He loved being outdoors, whether fishing, hunting, being on the river, or just spending time around a campfire with good friends - these were his favorite things.
    Dean is survived by his wife: Lori Van Asten of Waupaca; his mother: Jackie Van Asten of Larsen; two children: Taryn (Aaron) Greisinger of Merrill and Tanner (Kim) Van Asten of Hortonville; three grandchildren: Ryland and recently born twins Holden and Hadley; his former wife and the mother of the children: Dawn (Dan) Van Asten of Hortonville; two brothers: Tim (Diane) Van Asten of Larsen and Jody Van Asten of Appleton; and a sister: Kalyn (Brett) Olson of Neenah. He is also survived by the Van Asten nieces and nephews: Johanna (Andy) Buss, Jonathan (Deb) Van Asten, Jennifer (Jake) Van Asten, Jacob Van Asten,Tyler (Sandy) Van Asten, Bree Van Asten, Kane Olson, and Claire Olson.
    Other survivors include Lori's children: Jessica (Marty) Syring of Larsen and their children Ella, Emily, and Blake; and William (Oksana) Harper of Florida and their daughter Lynette; and Lori's sisters: Kathy Syring of Waupaca and Jan Keddell of Shawano, as well as Bruce Leitzke and his family.
    For many years, some special friends graced Dean's life, and they also will miss him dearly. Among them are Butch and Kathy Miller, Eddie Gilmore, and Andy and Susie Miller.
    Dean was preceded in death by his father, Guyland Van Asten in 2016, and by Lori's parents Tom and Audrey Protheroe.
    A service of remembrance and a time to celebrate Dean will be held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Hope United Methodist Church, 8950 Alpine Road, just south of Fremont, with Rev. Alex Tychkin officiating. Friends and relatives are invited to gather at the church on Wednesday afternoon from 5:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
