    Obituary:
    Ethel C. Verkuilen, age 88, of Appleton, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at Brewster Village. She was born in Menasha on July 7, 1920, the daughter of Ed and Viola (Grade) Belling. Ethel graduated from Menasha High School, and was united in marriage to Henry N. Verkuilen on September 3, 1938. The Verkuilens were charter parishioners of St. Bernard Catholic Church, and Ethel was an Appleton resident for 59 years. She was employed for 25 years for Kimberly-Clark Corp. in their research and development lab and retired in 1980.
    Survivors include her sons: Gerald (Roseann) Verkuilen, Appleton; Thomas (Susan) Verkuilen, Green Bay; her daughters: Mary (John) Smith, Appleton; Susan (Michael) Treviranus, Sun Prairie; her grandchildren: Michael (Cassandra) Smith, Stacey (Joe) Thibodeau, Vannessa (Gilbert) DeSantos, Scott (Carol) Verkuilen, Tammy (Lyle) Thomas, Heidi (Jason) Wilcox, Paul Verkuilen, Amanda Treviranus, and Keeley (Nathan) Matson; there are 13 great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Jane Belling, Neenah.
    Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Fred.
    The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, November 10, 2008, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 W. Pine St., with Father Dennis Ryan as celebrant. Visitation will begin Monday at 9 a.m. until the time of mass at the church. Entombment will be at Appleton Highland Memorial Park. A memorial fund in her name is being established.
    The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Brewster Village and Heartland Hospice for their support and loving care given to Ethel.

    Gerald "Jerry" Charles Verkuilen, of Appleton, age 70, passed away Thursday evening after a short stay at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Jerry was born on October 15, 1943 in Wausau, Wisconsin to his parents Henry and Ethel (Belling) Verkuilen. He was united in marriage to Rose Ann (VanStraten) Verkuilen on April 15, 1967. Jerry served his country in the Marines from 1962-1965. He worked in the printing industry most of his life. Jerry enjoyed all sports, especially the Brewers, Packers, Badgers and car racing. Jerry also enjoyed spending time with his family by playing many card games, particularly cribbage and attending Brewers games.
    He is survived by Rose Ann Verkuilen and their daughter, Vannessa (Gilbert) Desantos, two granddaughters; Chelsey (fiancé Brian Young) Desantos and Leah Desantos and Brad, and one great-grandson Joseph. Jerry is survived by siblings; Tom Verkuilen of Suamico, Mary (Jack) Smith of Darboy, and Suzie (Mike) Treviranus of Sun Prarie Wisconsin as well as many nieces and nephews. Brother and sister in laws; Julie and John Schmidt of Menasha, Bridget and Dennis Welch of Greenville, Pete and Terri Van Straten of Duluth, Minnesota, Toby Sasse of New London, Cathy and Kevin Mrasak of Titusville, Florida.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother, Viola Winarski, mother and father-in-law Robert and Dorothy (Johnson) VanStraten.
    Memorial services for Jerry will be held at 6:00PM on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St Appleton with the Rev. Landon Churchill officiating. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4:00PM until the time of service.

    Thomas H. Verkuilen, 70, Suamico, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2015. He was born in Wausau on Dec. 20, 1944 to the late Henry and Ethel (Belling) Verkuilen. Thomas served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965 when he was honorably discharged. He lived and raised his family in various Wisconsin cities. Thomas was employed at Kimberly Clark in Neenah for more than 30 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved his family, friends and especially his grandkids and dogs.
    Survivors include Peggy Eckrich; his sons, Scott (Carol) Verkuilen; Paul Verkuilen; daughters, Tammy (Lyle) Thomas; Heidi (Jason) Wilcox; grandchildren, Kyra and Justin Verkuilen; Tyler and Emma Thomas; Sydney and Lauren Wilcox; sisters, Mary (Jack) Smith; Sue (Mike) Treviranus; sister-in-law, Rose Ann Verkuilen. Further survived by other relatives and friends.
    Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gerald Verkuilen.

    Vannessa (Verkuilen) DeSantos, of Appleton, age 44, passed away peacefully at home after a long and courageous battle with GIST cancer. She was born on September 23, 1969 to Rose Ann (Van Straten) Verkuilen and the late Gerald Verkuilen. On November 20, 1990 she married Gilbert DeSantos, and together they had two daughters, she was a wonderful wife and treasured her daughters. She enjoyed spending time with her family, she loved playing cards, going to the cottage and dancing. Vannessa's strength, selflessness and kindheartedness to all she knew will be greatly missed.
    She is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Gilbert DeSantos, two daughters; Chelsey Rose DeSantos and Fiancé Brian Young and Leah Lupita DeSantos and Brad Pomplun and one grandson, Joseph Caleb. Vannessa is further survived by her mother, Rose Ann Verkuilen; father in law Jose H. De Santos, her best friend who was a sister to her, Jessica (Travis) Haufschildt, her brothers and sisters in law; Natalie (Johny) Vasquez, Nick, Robert, Julie and Joe De Santos, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, especially Julie and Bridget who supported her through out her whole life.
    Vannessa is preceded in death by her father, Jerry Verkuilen and her grandparents; Robert and Dorothy (Johnson) Van Straten and Henry and Ethel (Belling) Verkuilen, mother in law, Elvira Perez De Santos and Aunt Agnes (Van Straten) Sasse.
    Memorial services for Vannessa will be held at 6:00PM on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St Appleton with the Rev. Landon Churchill officiating. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4:00PM until the time of service.
    Special Thank You to Doctor William Guenther and associates, who treated her illness from the age of 18 and then again when she developed GIST at the age of 30.

    Paul Christopher Verkuilen passed away in Indiana on April 21, 2016 at the age of 43. Paul was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on March 22, 1973 to Nancy (Harold) Hauser and Thomas Verkuilen.
    Paul was a graduate of Appleton West High School and Marian College. He had many varied interests, sports, playing cards, competitive pool, golf... and always enjoyed family events. He will be especially remembered as a history aficionado and his trips abroad, especially London, were some of his happiest memories.
    He will be deeply missed by those who survive: mother, Nancy, stepfather, Harold, brother, Scott (Carol) Verkuilen, stepsisters, Chrysta (Todd) Henrickson, Tammy (Lyle) Thomas, Heidi (Jason) Wilcox, stepbrothers, Greg (Shele) Hauser, Chad (Terri) Hauser, Matt (Mandy) Hauser. Special nieces and nephews, Kyra, Justin, Andrew, Camron, Collin, T.J. and Derek, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Paul was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, an uncle and cousin.
    The family has honored his request that there be no funeral or formal service.
    A private family gathering has been held. RIP Paul. We love you!
