    Biography:
    CHARLES HOMER GILLETT, assistant city engineer of Appleton, Wisconsin, was born at Randolph, Portage county, Ohio, July 30, 1853, a son of Henry Davis and Martha Augusta (Shepard) Gillett. The family of Gillett is of French Huguenot descent, the name being formerly spelled Gillet, meaning Julia, fem. of Julius. Mr. Gillett's branch of the family left France for Scotland, and some thirty years later, about 1600, went to, Southern England, from whence, May 30, 1630, the progenitors, Nathan and Jonathan, came to America. The latter's sixth son, Jeremiah, had a son Abraham, whose son, Noah, of Farmington, Conn., was the father of Captain Obediah, of Avon, Conn., the great grandfather of Charles H. Gillett. Noah, Jr., an older brother of Obediah, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Obediah's first son was Alva, who was the father of Henry Davis Gillett. The latter died in September 3, 1856, at Springport, Michigan, while visiting with his brother, Amon. Mrs. Gillett married Captain Enos Frank Drummond, a sea captain and steamboat man, operating the steamer "Wolf" between New London and Oshkosh during the Civil War. She came to Wisconsin in 1860, locating at New London, where Captain Drummond died in 1863, and in 1867 Mrs. Gillett (Drummond) came to Appleton, where she has resided ever since. Mrs. Gillett had two sons by her first marriage: Charles Homer and Henry Wells, the latter born September 18, 1856, who is now located in Freedom, Portage county, Ohio. Charles Homer Gillett received a common school education, and as a youth took up civil engineering and surveying as a life occupation. He worked in the woods for some years as cruiser and estimator of timber and assisted in surveying the lake shore line from Kaukauna to Appleton, was a member of the government river surveying party, was assistant city surveyor and deputy county surveyor under John Stephens, and in 1876 served as city engineer. From 1876 until 1880 Mr. Gillett was in the employ of the Lake Shore Railroad, and from 1880 until 1890 served as city engineer, a position which he also held from 1896 to 1900. He has acted in this capacity several times since, and is now holding the position of assistant city engineer, also the office of county surveyor since 1903.
    Mr. Gillett was married April 29, 1897, to Augusta Drephal, of Cicero, Wisconsin, daughter of Fred Drephal, and three children have been born to this union, namely: Henry F., September 2, 1898; Esther May, May 6, 1902; and the baby, Ruth Augusta, April 24, 1911. Mr. Gillett is an independent voter, and is fraternally connected with the Modern Woodmen and the E. F. U.

    Ralph C. Gillette 308 Fillmore St., Kaukauna Age 54, passed away unexpectedly Friday afternoon at Island Lake, Wisconsin. Survivors are his wife, Marie, two daughters, JoAnn, Milwaukee; Maryann, Oshkosh; one son, Charles, Kaukauna; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Latham and Mrs. Karl Fareell, both of Appleton; one brother, Henry, California. No visitation or flowers. Funeral services are pending at the Jansen Funeral Home, Kimberly.

    Dawn, age 88, of Appleton, passed away Monday, September 7, 2009, at Peabody Manor. She was born January 16, 1921, in Appleton, daughter of the late Henry and Edna (Kimball) Gillette. She married Vincent J. Kraus April 19, 1941, in Appleton, sharing 62 years together before his death September 16, 2003. Dawn was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
    Dawn is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Kathleen and Robert Toonen, Neenah; two sons and daughters-in-law: Richard and Cindy Kraus, Appleton; Thomas and Joan Kraus, Appleton; a brother: Robert Gillette, Appleton; a sister, Beverly Gillette, Chico, CA; a sister-in-law, Ruth Gillette, Mountain; seven grandchildren: Brian (Karen) Toonen, Bolingbrook, IL; Christine Toonen, Neenah; Jeff( Vicky) Kraus, Appleton, Eric (Kristen) Kraus, Appleton; Jason (Jeannie) Wickesberg, Appleton; Jodi Wickesberg, Appleton, Joel Wickesberg, Appleton; 11 great-grandchildren: Zebediah Toonen, Makenna, Isaac and Zoe Kraus; Austin Lazor and Katelynn Kraus; Dylan and Ethan Wickesberg; Anthony and Andy Vogel; Broady Laux; and a great-great-grandson: Zane.
    She was preceded in death by a daughter: Carol Wickesberg, 1996; a sister Lois Chapman, Brother Harold Gillette and a sister-in-law: Elaine Gillette.
    Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Jordan Kuczwara officiating. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral chapel on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to Theda Care At Home Hospice or Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
    The family would like to express a special thank you to Theda Care at Home Hospice and Birch Cottage staff for the wonderful care Dawn received while in their care.

JoAnn graduated from Kaukauna High School and also rece ived a degree as a Registered Nurse. She was a very kind, compassionate pe rson who was always ready to help family and friends.JoAnn is survived by her mother, Marie Gillette, brother, Chuck(Chieko) Gi llette, brother-in- law, Joe Van Hammond, family friend, Joanne Ogiba-Raym er, God child, Jenny Harkness and many close cousins: especially Marion (B ill) Marvin and family, LeRoy (Ceceilia) DeBruin and family, and Joanne Ve rbeten and her family.JoAnn was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Gillette, her sister, Ma ry Ann Van Hammond, and God parents: John "Gene" (Nettie) De Bruin.The Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2005, 4 p.m. at Sac red Heart Catholic Church, 222 E.
