Altho many such sad messag es are daily sent out from Washington to grief stricken par-ents all over the country, yet, when an announcement of this nature com es home to us, and not till then do we fully realize the sadnessof war. Thomas McHugh, oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McHugh, was b orn May 12th, 1888, on what is now the Town Farm, two milessouth of the village of Stockbridge. He grew to manhood there and attend ed High School and when 20 years of age made a trip through theWest and North. He spent some months with his uncle, Peter O'Toole, n ow of Glascow, Montana, and from there he traveled up intoCanada where he found employment with a lumbering concern. Returning eas t, he was employed in Oshkosh for some time and when warwas finally declared against Germany he came home and valiantly offered h is services to his country, leaving here in November for CampCuster. He spent two short furloughs at home, one in December and the la st one on New Years Day, both of which visits will be cherished and rememb ered by his friends. His splendid appearance in uniform and his bright , c heerful spirit indicated how satisfied he was with camp life and how willi ng to face any kind of hardship for the honor of his country. He happen ed to be on the ill fated ship, Muldova, which was torpedoed off the coa st of England by one of the German U-Boats, but he, with all the other sol dier boys, was safely transferred to another vessel, very few lives bei ng lost at this time. He wrote home as many of the details as would pa ss the censor of the torpedoing of the boat and stated that what might ha ve been the loss of hundreds of lives of the soldier boys was easily diver ted by Divine Provi-dence and the splendid discipline which prevailed on board the transpor t. The soldier boys were landed on the coast of England where they remain ed for some weeks before crossing the channel to France. He had taken pa rt in several drives against the fearful Huns, during the summer months a nd was killed, gloriously fighting for his country and the freedom of demo cracy, on July 18th. Victim of Influenza - One of the sad deaths, and there were many of them, resulting from influenza was that of Emmet McHugh which occured suddenly on the morning of Saturday, December 21st. Mr. McHugh had been working at Manitowoc where he was taken ill and came home the Saturday before. He felt so much better that he spoke of going to work on Thursday when he had a relapse and failed rapidly until he passed away. At six o'clock Saturday morning he remarked he was feeling much better but an hour later was cold in death.
Emmet James McHugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McHugh, was born in the town of Stockbridge April 3, 1892, attended the rural schools and later occupied his time on the home farm. Four years ago he went to Mellen where he was employed as a baggage master in the Soo Line Depot. He returned to his home town and on April 4, 1916 was united in marriage to Marian Mortimer, daughter of the late Albert Mortimer of Chilton town. They settled in this city in the Mortimer cottage on Madison street and he entered the employ of the Carnation Milk Products Company. He also worked for the chilton canning company, rendering excellent service wherever employed. The young man was well liked wherever he lived. He was accommodating and generous which qualities made him many friends, all of whom sympathize deeply with the widow and two little children, his parents, brothers and sisters in their sorrow.
The funeral, which was private, was held on Saturday morning, Requiem Mass being celebrated at St. Augustine's church and internment in St. Augustine cemetery. He leaves to mourn, a wife and two children, Ethel and Roger, his parents, four brothers, Edw. with the American Engineers in France, Ray at Racine, Harry and Leonard at home and two sisters, Mrs. William D. Jaeger of South Stockbridge and Bertha at home.

    Obituary:
Arthur J. Hemauer, 85, Stockbridge, died surrounded by his family on April 25, 2009. He was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Stockbridge, son of the late Joseph and Eva (O'Toole) Hemauer. He married Rose Zahringer on Nov. 5, 1949, in Sherwood. She preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 2007.
Art's adulthood began at the early age of 16 following the unexpected death of his father. He would have made his father proud by helping his mother raise his brothers and sisters and following in his father's footsteps by continuing to farm. Art wanted to make Stockbridge his permanent home. He bought three houses for $750.00 in the Milwaukee area, disassembled each one and used the good parts from each house to build his house in Stockbridge. He was always active and volunteered for many different events in the Stockbridge community, but he was exceptionally proud of being an instrumental part of the Stockbridge School District and helped a great deal in getting the school gymnasium built.
His entrepreneurial spirit was evident in many different areas of his life. He was the owner and operator of Hemauer Truck & Bus, where he trucked cattle and owned and operated buses used by the Stockbridge School District. He also owned and operated his own charter bus service. Art was employed by C.W. Transport as an over-the-road steel hauler. Following his retirement, Art worked as a security guard for many different companies. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the church choir. He also enjoyed renovating old vehicles, fixing cars, trucks and semis, blacktopping, installing terrazzo flooring and laying sod.
Survivors include his children, Dennis (Linda) Hemauer, Fond du Lac; Anthony (Lourdes) Hemauer, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Eugene (Kay) Hemauer, Greenville; Janice (Wayne) Marose, Chilton; Jill (Jim) Nelson, Appleton; Amy (Robert) Holzer, Combined Locks; five grandchildren, Michael Marose, Mac Writt, Mitchel Writt, Emily Writt, and Sarah Hemauer; two sisters and three brothers, Margaret Daun, New Holstein; Charles (Joan) Hemauer, Waukesha; Willard (Mary) Hemauer, Stockbridge; David (Marlene) Hemauer, Appleton; Mary Criter, Chilton; two sisters-in-law, Alvina (Art) Campbell, Hilbert; Catherine Zahringer, Sherwood; and two brothers-in-law, Clarence Zahringer, Sherwood; and Irvin Zahringer, Sherwood. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose; a brother, Earl "Jack" (Delores "Chris") Hemauer; brothers-in-law, Arthur Daun, Don Criter, Leo (Mabel) Zahringer, Walter Zahringer, Roman Zahringer; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Zahringer, Ann Zahringer and Anita (Al) Hemauer.
Funeral service will be at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 3 to 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2009.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Cherry Meadows Hospice Home for all of the loving, patient care you gave to Art and our entire family. You made this difficult transition for us a little easier.
