    Mary Chambers Schaefer passed away peacefully on March 4, 2015. Mary was born October 24, 1916 to William R., Sr. and Sarah A. (Nesbitt) Chambers at home in Suamico, WI. Mary graduated from White Pine School in the Town of Suamico. After graduating from Sacred Heart Academy in Green Bay, WI. Mary received her teaching license from Outagamie County Teachers' Training School in Kaukauna, WI. After teaching one year in a rural Brown County school, she married Charles Schaefer in 1936 at St. John the Baptist Church in Duck Creek, WI and moved to Kaukauna. They became the parents of five children. Charles preceded her in death in 1967. Mary was very active together with her husband in Boy Scouts of America as their sons were growing up. She taught at St. John's Grade School in Little Chute from 1956 to 1973, primarily third grade. Upon the death of a beloved daughter-in-law, Mary moved to California to care for her young granddaughter for twelve years. Mary loved to drive. During the years she spent in California not many summers passed without her bringing her granddaughter back to Wisconsin to visit family. Her truck with camper attached was her home away from home. Mary loved traveling abroad also and being full-blooded Irish, she especially cherished her two trips to Ireland.After returning to Kaukauna, she renewed old friendships and became active in St. Mary's Altar Society, Golden Agers, St. Vincent de Paul Society, National Catholic Order of Foresters, and Loaves and Fishes food pantry. She also taught Religious Ed at St. Mary Parish where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and helped with funeral dinners.Mary spent many hours crocheting and knitting. However, her earliest love was reading. She could become so absorbed in a book that she became oblivious to anything around her.Mary is survived by five children: her daughter Donna Vanden Heuvel, Kaukauna and her children, Tom (Ellen) Vanden Heuvel; Tim (Annette) Vanden Heuvel and their children Tana and Colton; Jill (John) Evers and their daughter, Haley; David (Jennifer) Vanden Heuvel and their daughters Cassidy Vanden Heuvel and Cori Lang; and four sons: Jerome (Jerry) ( Margie) Schaefer, Colorado Springs, CO, and their daughters Cindy (Chris) Knapp and Kimberly (Michael) Van Ee and their daughter Arianna; Dennis (Mary Lou) Schaefer, Kaukauna and their children Michael (Kim ) Schaefer and his daughter Stephanie (Ben) Lancour; Brian Schaefer; Becky (Dan) Berg and their daughters Lauryn and Jennsen; Amy (Jeff) Diedrick and their children Payton and Connor; Joseph (Marie) Schaefer, Denver, CO, and his daughter Katie (Kevin) Bishop and their sons Morgan and Wesley; John (Jack) (Jolene) Schaefer, Kaukauna and their children, Kyle (Leona) Schaefer and their daughters, Emma and Cora; Kevin (Jennifer) Schaefer and their sons Landon and Greyson; Travis (Tara) Schaefer and their daughters Alizè and Lillian. She is also survived by her brother Patrick Chambers, sister-in-law Jenny Chambers of Green Bay and brother-in-law Charles Van Eyck of Darboy as well as many nieces and nephews.Besides her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and sisters- and brothers-in-law: Catherine (Bob) Cox, Genevieve (Ronald) White, William R Chambers Jr., John (Jack) (Florian) Chambers, Francis (Tim) Chambers, Donna Chambers , daughter-in-law Sally Schaefer and grandson, Jeffrey Vanden Heuvel, Charles' parents Frank and Kathryn Schaefer, sisters-in-law Theresa Van Eyck and Virginia (Lawrence) Schmitz, brothers-in-law Ferdinand (Catherine) Schaefer and Cecil (Helen) Schaefer.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015 at St. Katharine Drexel Parish at St. Mary Church, 119 West Seventh St., Kaukauna with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating.
