    FORMER OLD SETTLER OF OZAUKEE COUNTY M.G. RUPPERT, Esq., who on account of a lung complaint had to seek the more pure air of the Western plains, has settled for some years back at Denv er, in Colorado. His many friends here will be glad to hear that he is imp roving in health. We extract the following from one of his late letters:"I am getting along quite well, I don't suffer as much with the asth ma as I did back East, although I am unable to do steady work. We had qui te a lively election in the State of Colorado; we elected a Democratic Gov ernor, an old Wisconsin boy by the name of Alva ADAMS of Pueblo Count y. We also elected 3 out of the 8 members of the lower house in our distri ct and 1out of the 2 Senators, elected the 2? county commissioners and t he democratic county Judge. In the State the democrats gained a few membe rs in the lower house, the balance of the State officers are republican s. The weather is very nice, times are very good; there is a lot of buildi ng going on in the city. Real estate is way up; the city is growing and t he country is settling up very fast, there are some very good farms in Col orado now under cultivation."Friend RUPPERT thinks that we are growing younger every day to judge fr om the picture contained in the NEWS lately, and that many old Wisconsin s ettlers who knew us here and to whom the cut was shown, had said the sam e. But we must confess that the photo fromwhich the cut was made, was taken some 5 years ago, and the "artist" was o ver-careful to wipe out the lines indicating old age, although the pictu re may pass for a good likeness yet. Friend RUPPERT will please give th is explanation to our friends in Denver. We have often wonderedwhether there is a place in the West where we haven't a friend or former a cquaintance living?

    Living as a Catholic in Port Washington, the church would have been St. Ma ry's (which is still there). Someone transcribed both the old and newer S t. Mary's cemeteries. These are not in alpha order, but rather as the cem etery is laid out. Old St. Mary's cemetery has many stones that are unrea dable. I did not find the Ruppert names listed in either. Union Cemete ry in Port was also transcribed and there was a Henry Ruppert 1861 - 19 23 listed there.

    Buried:
    Michael G Rupert and his wife Anna Flemming, were first buried in Calvary Cemetery, and later moved to Fairmount Cemetery.

    Much info on Michael and descendants came from RAOGK Volunteer Terry in Co lorado in Oct 2002, Email tlasky@bwn.net
    checked with the expert and found out that Mount Cavalry was part of a cem etery that was owned by the city of Denver. The last burial was in 1909 a nd the graves were moved by 1910. Since that part of the cemetery was Cat holic, most graves were moved to Mt. Olivet. Obviously your families grav es were moved to Fairmount. There is one book at the library that talks a bout the cemetery and I think it has inscriptions from some of the early y ears. I will check when I go to the library next time.Terry Lasky wrote: I found both of them and they are in the mail. Michael 's didn't list the name of the cemetery. Anna's said Mount Cavalry. The re is a Mount Cavalry in Hugo, Colorado on the plains near Kansas, but I d on't think that is the one. I am trying to find out if there was a Mou nt Cavalry somewhere around Denver in those days. Will let you kn ow if I find anything.

    Family History Researcher:
    Email;

    Hi Jay,
    My name is Ellen Coutts. Several years ago we corresponded briefly concerning the family of Louisa Ruppert and Michael Meehan. I am a descendent of Michael's sister, Annie. This summer I returned to researching the Meehan family and have spent some time studying your Rootsweb database. I was happy to find an obituary for Louisa and Michael's daughter, Margaret Carnsew.
    I also noticed you have a death date for Michael George Meehan as Dec. 25, 1918 in Vallejo, California. I was wondering where that date/record came from. The cemetery record for the family plot in Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, CO lists his date of burial as December 4, 1918.
    Concerning their son, John H., I believe he was a veteran of WWI. If you have an Ancestry subscription you can access his WWI Draft Registration card. I have a photo of him I can send you for your military page if you are interested. I don't recall if I sent it to you previously. I also have a photo of Louisa with John, Margaret and two of Louisa's nieces (daughters of Rosie) as well as one of John, George and Margaret. I will scan them in tomorrow and email them to you if you'd like. I don't have definite proof yet, but I believe John died in 1953 and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Denver. Attached is a photo of the grave that a very generous person took for me recently. The middle initial and year of birth is correct, so I assume its him. The cemetery office had no further information.
    Its not much but below is the death notice for Annie Meehan Monahan, Michael and Louisa's oldest child. (I see you already have the obits for her husband and two sons.) Annie died June 11, 1954, both she and Henry are buried with other member of Henry's family at Fairmount in Denver.
    I look forward to hearing from you.
    Ellen
