It was one of the most decorated ships in the Navy; 17 battle stars in all. After the successful invasion of Okinawa on Easter Sunday in 1945, the ship was ordered home for a re-fit. While on leave, he married Dorothy Engel on May 19, 1945; and they shared 67 years together. They spent their honeymoon in Seattle, Washington until the ship was completed and re-deployed. Norb went back to sea duty and Dorothy returned to Appleton. By the time the Minnie got to Cubic Bay, the war was over. After discharge, Norb and Leo C. Sturm owned and operated Leo & Norb's Deep Rock Gas Station on the corner of College Avenue and Walnut Street in downtown Appleton for almost 30 years. He then finished his working career at Azco Inc. as a tool warehouse manager. After retiring in 1986, he spent his free time at their cottage in Mountain, Wisconsin that they built together as a family. For 18 years, they spent the winters in Trophy Gardens in Alamo, Texas. Norb always enjoyed fixing things, especially motors, and you could see the smile on his face when it was working like new again. Norb truly enjoyed spending time with his family.
Norb is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy and five of their six children: Janet (Jeff) Tellock, Robert (Catherine) Giesen, Patricia Eckrich, William (Mona) Giesen, and Thomas (Sonja) Giesen; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Mary Ann Gagnon.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 24, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 528 Second Street, Menasha, with Fr. Paul Paider officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the hour of the Mass at the church. Interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery, Town of Menasha.

    Obituary:
Jeff Hoelzel, 60, of Neenah, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Theda Clark Medical Center.
Jeff was born August 9, 1952, in Neenah, the son of Eleanor (Millis) Hoelzel and the late Alvin Hoelzel. Jeff was united in marriage to Rebecca "Becky" Heule on February 26, 1973, in Mankato, MN. They were blessed with four sons: Nathan, Jacob, Jason and Brandon. Prior to his retirement in June 2011, Jeff was employed with Kimberly-Clark. Jeff loved four-wheeling, hunting, fishing, boating, and riding his moped. He had a great love for chocolate and was famous at area rummage sales, or as he referred to as "the Big Store". Tinkering, restoring and fixing things were part of his daily life, and he had a special, goofy way to make people laugh. On any given Sunday evening, Jeff could be found in the kitchen making "goop"; a tasty sweet treat for him and his kids. Jeff really loved to play with his grandkids and scare them when he could! Grandpa would love to find antique toys at "the Big Store". He'd bring them home, get down on the floor and play with the grandkids. He loved those kids!
Survivors include his loving wife, Becky; his sons: Nathan (Jenny), Jacob (fiancee' Jen Zirbel), Jason (Ann), and Brandon (Tina Ewing); beloved grandchildren, Ethan and Kaylee; his loving mother, Eleanor; brothers and sisters: Susan (Arnold) Enz, Joseph (Maureen), John (Nancy) Jerome (Karey), James (Donna), Sally (John) Wiberg, Jan (Darla), Steven (Laurie), and Stuart (Patricia); his mother-in-law, Ella Kramer; brothers and sisters-in-law: Pam (Don) Verbrick, Karen (Dick) Robinson, Randy (Linda) Heule, Jim Knabenbauer, Dawn (Guy) McCann and Mary (Michael) Wismer; there are many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Jeff will truly be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin, father-in-law, Don Heule, stepfather-in-law, Herbert Kramer, and sister-in-law, Linda (Heule) Knabenbauer.
A Celebration of Life for Jeff will be Monday, July 15, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at the Whiting Boat House, Doty Island, Neenah, and the family will celebrate with a gathering starting at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Boat House. Please bring your memories of Jeff to share and come dressed casually. (Jeff would want it this way) In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Jeff's honor is being established by the family.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the folks at K-C West for the special attention and care given to Jeff on Thursday.
    Toodles…
