Donna's comment: He gives birthdate incorrectly, but does list that he has "wife and one child," which would be correct since he was married to Christine and their first child had been born by then (date of draft registration was 5 Jun 1917). Also, signature looks similar to WWII draft registration, and he spells Ulman with one "L" although the title misspells it with two "LL's.".

    Obituary:
Leon W. Ulman, age 94 of Appleton, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2015, surrounded by all his children, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was reunited with his wife of 61 years, Lorraine. Leon was born at home in the Town of Greenville on September 19, 1920, the third child of Henry Ulman, Jr. and Christina (Hoffman) Ulman. He attended St. Mary's Grade School in Greenville and Roosevelt Junior High in Appleton. He worked on the family farm, raising chickens and hogs. Vegetables and fruit trees were harvested to sell door to door in Appleton. He grew up to be a tall, handsome man with blue/black hair and hazel eyes. He was a kind and gentle soul. He related to his family his many childhood adventures growing up on the farm. He had an incredible memory and could remember minute details of events, people and dates, starting with his very early childhood.
In December, 1941, he married Lorraine A. Sturm at St. Therese Church, Appleton. He entered military service, trained in Richmond, Virginia and Bangor, Maine before he was sent overseas and served in India, Burma and Pakistan. He was a sergeant, serving with the 1905th Aviation Engineering Battalion under Lord Mountbattan. He was head cook on the road crew that was building the Great Burma - Lido Road. When he returned to Appleton in December 1945, there was so much snow he stayed overnight at the Conway Hotel in Appleton before going home. He returned to his job at Wire Works, but was unhappy with being inside a dark building all day after "camping out" for more than two years in the jungle. He then worked for his Uncle George Ulman's painting business for 16 years before striking out on his own. He was proud of the fact that he was able to provide for his family. Leon and Lorraine traveled extensively to many military reunions. After retiring at 72, they traveled to Hawaii and to Florida many times. He enjoyed going "up north" fishing, playing cards, and reading books, especially biographies.
He was a charter member of St. Thomas More Parish in Appleton, an usher for 50 years, a fourth-degree member of Council #607 of the Knights of Columbus, and served in numerous other charitable activities.
He is survived by his children; Barbara (Thomas) Martens, Kathleen Ulman, Marjorie (John) Ehle, Nick (Jodi) Ulman and Joseph Ulman, grandchildren; Suzi Martens, Jeff (Traci) Martens, Joel Martens, Casey (David) Rudey, Jason Ulman and Kristy (Corey) Bauman, great grandchildren; Alicia, Andrew, Jarrett, Rachel, Sarah, Luke, Austin, Brendon and Heath. Leon is further survived by brothers and sisters in law; Bernice Randerson, Rita Pritzl, George (Mary) Sturm, Al Sturm, Elaine Kurey, Patty (Glen) Griesbach and Cyril Sturm, many other relatives and friends.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, his parents, his in laws, George and Elizabeth Sturm as well his siblings; Servatius (Regina) Ulman, Ferdinand (Edna) Ulman, Clifford Ulman and Helen (Francis) VandenBerg, brothers and sisters in law; Theodore (Frances) Sturm, Leroy Kurey, Helen (Shorty) Wittman, Richard Pritzl and Marilyn Sturm.
A funeral service for Leon will be held at 11:00AM, Friday, January 30, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1810 N. McDonald St, Appleton with Rev. Gerald Falk and Rev. Jim Lucas con-celebrating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00AM until 10:45AM. Military honors will follow services at the church and burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the outstanding staff at Brewster Village for their kind and compassionate care, and thank you to Father Falk for a lifetime of friendship and spiritual support.

    Obituary:
Marcus G. Nigl, 97, went to Heaven on Sunday evening, June 2, 2013, surrounded by his family in his home. Marc was born on April 25th, 1916 and had just celebrated his 97th birthday which was his goal and a very joyous milestone. He was born in the town of Bovina, Wisconsin to Joseph and Alma (Ulman) Nigl, one of five children who later moved to Kaukauna to live on his family's new farm. Upon graduation from Kaukauna High School in 1935, Marc was awarded the 'A.M. Lang Scholarship Trophy,' which he promptly presented to his mother in the audience with a hug and a smile. During the next six years, he worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company. When World War II began, Marc joined the United States Army and was a cryptographer, handling secret and confidential documents in Europe. He earned the rank of Technical Sergeant. He also met many people in Europe who remained life-long friends. After the war, Marc returned to Thilmany and resumed his career.
On June 20, 1953, Marc married Elizabeth "Betty" Kieffer at Holy Cross Church in Kaukauna. Marc and Betty shared many common interests including having had the same favorite High School English teacher, Ethel Handran. Marc was a lifelong Elks member and was proud of having been the Kaukauna Elk's Secretary since the early 1950s. Marc was also a Boy Scout Master and followed the successes of his scouts into their adult years. He also was a volunteer tax helper for the AARP. Marc and Betty enjoyed giving back to the community through the Heart of the Valley Senior Service Club. They also enjoyed exercising at the Heart Institute of Appleton's Cardiac Rehab Center where they met a large group of close friends. Marc had many hobbies: he was a private pilot, enjoyed genealogy, photography, classical music, reading, but his greatest passion was gardening. His philosophy was to take nothing from the land without giving something back. Over the years he grew thousands of trees from seed and planted them from North East Wisconsin to St. Louis. He shared the bounty of his large vegetable and fruit garden with family, friends, and neighbors. Despite the health challenges of the past three years, Marc continued to tend his garden including one that grows right now.
Marc is survived by his wife Betty; daughters: Claire Whelan of Appleton, Mary (John) Pertzborn of Belleville, IL, and Kate Nigl (Pat Askew) of Evanston, IL.; a grandson: Nicholas Pertzborn of Belleville, IL. Marc was preceded in death by his son: Philip Nigl, his son-in-law: Bruce Whelan, his two sisters: Anna Marie Senso and Josephine Langdon; and two: brothers Edward and Vincent.
A memorial service for Marc will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the FARGO FUNERAL HOME, 400 W. Wisconsin Avenue in Kaukauna. Friends will gather at the funeral home on Saturday morning after 9:00 AM. The Kaukauna Elks Lodge will meet for an Elks Memorial at 10:45 AM, and full military honors will follow the memorial service. Online condolences may be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Marc's name. The family would also like to offer their sincere thanks to the many caregivers who were so wonderful during our difficult days. They include Dr. Michael Johnson and his staff Cindy and Randi; everyone at the Appleton Heart Institute, including nurses Molly Drakas and Terri Wirth, and everyone from ThedaCare at Home. We will never forget all that you have done for our family.
