Askeaton--Funeral Services for James Brick, 82 yrs of age, a long time resident of this place, who died at Marinette Friday morning, were held Monday morning from St. Patrick's Catholic Church here at 9 O' Clock, with Rev. P. Zey in charge. Burial was in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, here. Pall bearers were Walter Brick, Wilbert Brick, John Brick, Ray Brick, Tom Brick and Michael Hart. The deceased Mr. Brick was very well known here, as he resided in this section before moving to Marinette, where he had made his home in recent years. He is survived by his widow of Marinette, one sister, Mrs. Maurice Summers of Green Bay:, One brother, Thomas Brick, Sr. of this place.

Askeaton - Every other time I had driven right on by.
Not this time. Maybe it was the afterglow of Irish Fest, or maybe it was that I wasn't exactly headed anywhere, so why not stop to check out the sign that read "Askeaton - Irish Country."And I was not misled. The first farm on Hill Road was a Finnegan's, and there were shamrocks on the front of Holland Town Hall. Halfway up Hill Road was St. Pat's Church Road, and up St. Pat's Church Road was St. Patrick 's Catholic Church itself, its steeple stretching toward heaven. And across the road, as I had suspected, was a cemetery filled with Burnses and Brennans, Meehans and Shannons, even a cluster of Clancys. It was Irish country, all right, and has been for more than 150 years. That much I could read with my own eyes, if nothing else from the 1856 on the cemetery sign and the names on the stones. But behind those obvious clues was a larger story of immigrant America and pioneer Wisconsin, a story filled out in a history of Askeaton I borrowed from Father Al Geisler ("like the potato chip") when he emerged from his rectory to mail a letter and found me in the parish bone yard.Askeaton (originally called East Holland) was still covered with virgin timber when the first Irish settlers arrived in the early 1850s, refugees of the devastating potato famine. Some were from Askeaton, in County Limerick, and so the name was resurrected in the new world. Soon land was cleared for farms, a small log school was built and also a small log church to house the growing congregation of Irish Catholics. Of course it was called St. Patrick's. As the community continued to grow, it became evident that a larger church was needed, so funds were sought and plans drawn. The basement was dug by parishioners with teams of horses and scrapers and in November of 1908 the current St. Patrick's Church, which still has 250 members, was blessed and dedicated.Today there is little other than the church and scattered farms to suggest Askeaton was once a thriving little place. Its mailing address is actually Greenleaf. But there was a time baseball followed 8 o'clock Mass, and there were cheese factories, a depot, post office and both parochial and public schools just a hundred-yard dash from each other in the shadow of the church's steeple.The separate schools share a neat historical footnote. For some years, Franciscan nuns taught the area's first and second grades at the parochial school, and also taught third through eighth grades at the public school, a blurring of church and state boundaries that ended under a frown from Madison in 1953. And the day there were not enough nuns for St. Patrick 's school, either, said John F. Hart in his story of Askeaton, "was a sad day indeed, and it took a number of years to get over the shock."The real fun of reading Hart's account was not so much the official story of Askeaton as the unofficial stories of its residents.
Thomas Brick, a prosperous farmer with 12 children, was noted for playing nice sweet music on his violin. Patrick Clancy danced the jig and played violin in the church choir. Thomas Hart had an orchestra that played for dances, Michael Kelly ran Kelly's Saloon and none other than one Patrick Hart became the first priest-son of St. Patrick's Church. Askeaton was once a place where loose pigs on the highway could be confiscated, where widowed ladies were given $20 in aid from taxpayers and music mattered."The Irish didn't need much of an excuse for a house party," Hart wrote. " If they would run short of an anniversary, they would make one up! I went to a few of these parties as a boy. One night there was a party at Thomas Brick Sr.'s and I watched 'Long' Maurice Summers do the 'Irish Clog .' It fascinated me so that from that night on I tried to imitate him."None of that, of course, was in evidence the day I stopped by. Askeaton was country quiet, as it always is, said Father Geisler, except on Sunday mornings or for parish picnics. But I'm glad I read Hart's account of what once was to lend context to the names on the stones. Brick, Carl L.Carl L. Brick, 96, Greenleaf passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, No v. 22, 2001 at Ledgeview Nursing Home. Carl was born on Dec. 4, 1904 in As keaton, Wis., the son of the late Thomas and Jennie (Geier) Brick. On Sep t. 9, 1931 he married the former Frances Fontaine and the couple enjoyed o ver 51 years together. Frances preceded him in death on Nov. 19, 1982. Ca rl operated a farm for many years prior to owning and managing Bricks Clov er Farm Store until his retirement. Carl was active in education servi ng on the Brown County School Board in the late 1950's. He loved playing c ards and was an avid Bowler and Golfer. Carl was a member of the Greenle af Lions Club and volunteered for the Greenleaf Fire Department. He lik ed sports and greatly enjoyed watching the Packers, the Irish of Notre Da me and the Chicago Cubs. Terrance F. Brick "Terry" Kaukauna
Age 79, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Parkside Care Center in Little Chute. He was born on April 2, 1934 in the Town of Holland, son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Hart) Brick. Terry was employed as a lift truck operator for 42 years at Thilmany Paper Mill until his retirement. He was a member of the Kaukauna Lions Club and a past member of the Kaukauna Athletic Club. A sports enthusiast, he enjoyed watching the Packers, Badgers, Brewers, and the Boston Red Sox.
Terry is survived by his four children: Kevin (Connie) Brick, Tom (Cindy) Brick, Kerri (Scott) Miller, and Tiffany (David) Ortiz; ten grandchildren: Eric Vanden Boogard, Kim (Brian) Kosmosky, Lindsay (Scott Goldsmith) Brick, Austin Brick, Jonathon Brick, Bailey Miller, Nicholas Miller, Yessica Ortiz, Alexandra Ortiz, and D'Angelo Ortiz; five great-grandchildren: Makennah Vandehey, Nevaeh Kosmosky, Marlee Vanden Boogard, Danicah Kosmosky, and baby girl Goldsmith; his brothers and sisters: Joanne (Ralph) Runnoe, Gene (Helen) Brick, Kay Fischer, Robert (Karen) Brick, and Margaret (William) Balzer. John was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 26, 1940, to Mary Lou (Leonhard) and John Howard Brick. He grew up in Askeaton, Wis. He was the oldest of nine children. He died in his home on Aug. 1, at the age of 73 with family members at his side. At age 16, he began flight lessons which would soon develop into his life-long career and passion.
He graduated from Parks Aeronautical College as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. After graduating he met Pat. They were happily married for 52 years.
John served a 28 year career in the Air Force, accumulating 6,000 hours of flying time in a variety of aircraft such as T-37, T-33, T-38, F-100, 01-E, OV-10, A-7D and the A-10. He earned the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit among other medals. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1990.
In his retirement he built his own airplane (RV4) and flew whenever he got the chance. He said that his wife Pat was the best passenger he could ever ask for! They flew across the country many times visiting family and friends. He was an active member of the EAA, editor for his local chapter newsletter for 15 years and also worked with the Young Eagles. He made many great friends at Pierce County Airport Thun Field.
John was preceded in death by his parents Mary Lou and John Howard, and brothers David and Denis (Camille). He is survived by his wife Patricia and their three children: Jeff (Pam), Joseph and Laura; grandchildren Eli, Ruby, Jordan and John-Allan; sisters Jeanne (Dave) Trumpy, Mary Claire (Marvin) Matzke, Laurie (Richard) Lambert; brothers Tom (Kathy), Kevin (Sally) and Steven.
Remembrances may be made to Wounded Warriors. He will be forever missed and loved.
