    Obituary:
At noon on Friday last, Jan 17th, Franz Bernard of Chilton town closed a long life of usefulness and passed into eternal rest, at the home of his son, Math., the final dissolution coming at the age of eighty-three years, less than month after that of his aged wife and companion, who died on Dec 24th last. The venerable couple had been very feeble for the past two years and suffered from no disease other than the effect of old age or the wearing out of the human machinery. Mr. Bernard was up and about the home on the day previous to his death.
The deceased was born in Germany, Dec 4th 1835, coming to American with his parents when quite young and settling in Woodland, Dodge County, where he was married on Aug 1, 1864 to Anna Rohlinger. He was a blacksmith in his early manhood and worked at Iron Ridge in Dodge county. After his marriage he removed to Ashpun, Fond du Lac county, continuing his trade until 1885 when he disposed of his property in Fond du Lac and came to Chilton town, this county, where he purchased what was known as the Edw Daskam farm, three miles north of this city. Although he had been troubled, with asthma, he never lost a day's work and operated the farm with good success until 1902 when he and his wife retired from their labors and turned over the homestead to their son, Math., with whom they made their home until called to a better one. Mr. Bernard was thrifty and industrious, working earnestly and faithfully for the interest of the community as well as his own interest and was everywhere rated as a good citizen and neighbor.
He was a member of St Mary's Catholic church since coming to Chilton attending regularly and being very proud of the advancement and improvement in the church and school. Of late years, on account of his feeble health, he has kept more closely at home where he has been given every care by his son and family. One of the most notable events in his later life and perhaps in his entire career, was the celebration of his golden wedding anniversary on Aug 1914. His wife was with him and his children about him and there seemed to be nothing wanting to complete his happiness.
The funeral was held on Monday morning from St Mary's church, Rev Fr L N Thelen officiating at Requiem Mass, with interment in St Mary's cemetery. He is survived by two sons, Math and Frank and Mrs. P W Fochs of Marathon City, Mrs. John J Fuchs of Chilton town, Mrs. Frank Williams of Waukesha, Mrs. Math Puetz of Saskatchewan, Canada and Mrs Anton Krautkraemer of Kiel, all of whom were present at the funeral except Mrs. P W Fochs who is seriously ill at this hospital at Wausau, and Mrs. Math Puetz of Canada. Others who attended were Mrs. Ferd Weisenberger, a grand daughter of Marathon City and John Weyer of Lomira.

Frank married Kohlinger, Anna Bef 1867. Anna was born 21 Sep 1839, , , , Germany; died 24 Dec 1918; was buried , St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Chilton, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Obituary:
Great sorrow was felt in this community over the death of Nicholas R. Bernard which occurred on Tuesday morning at St. Vincent's Hospital, Green Bay. Mr. Bernard suffered an injury to his left foot some seventeen years ago while cutting wood, which did not heal properly and ever since, at intervals, it was bothering him. Some four weeks ago the old trouble returned and took such hold upon his system that a physician was called who found that blood poisoning had set in. He advised an immediate operation and Mr. Bernard was taken to the hospital at Green Bay. The infection developed rapidly until he succumbed as above stated.
Nicholas Bernard was born in Ashford, Fond du Lac County, July 12, 1878. When a boy he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bernard, to Lomira where he remained until 1888 when they moved to the town of Chilton. He assisted his parents on the farm now occupied by Math Bernard until 1901 when he was married to Miss Margaret King of Chilton Town. They moved onto the farm now owned by Herman Voigt which they operated until some ten years ago when he purchased the farm owned by his father-in-law, J. P. King, which has since been their home.
Mr. Bernard was considered one of the most successful and progressive young farmers in the county. He had excellent ideas and put them into proactive with fine results. He merged into extensive dairying and had on his farm some thirty-five head of purebred Holstein-Friesian cattle with excellent buildings for housing then and his crops. If he had not been cut down by death he would in time have made an admirable showing in this line of work.
The funeral was held at St. Mary's church in Hilbert, of which he was a prominent member. Rev. R. Max Osward officiating and interment in St. Mary's cemetery.
He is survived by a widow, and five children, Lucy, Monica and Marie, two sons, Benjamin and Robert. He also leaves his aged parents, five sisters, Mrs. Peter W. Fochs of Marathon City, Mrs. John J. Fuchs of Chilton town, Mrs. Frank William of Waukesha, Mrs. Math Puetz of Canada, Mrs. Anton Krautkraemer of Kiel and two brothers, Math and Frank Bernard of Chilton Town.
