    Biography:
    WILLIAM H. DIFFORDING. In naming the prominent citizens and representative farmers of Black Creek township, Outagamie county, extended mention should be given the name of William H. Diffording, who resides on a fine property of 120 acres in section 32, Black Creek township, and also owns a tract of 105 acres in section 5, Center township. He was born in Washington county, Wisconsin, October 12, 1867. Cornelius and Elizabeth (Foal) Diffording, the parents of William H. Diffording, were natives of Germany, where they were married, and came to America in 1861, locating in Milwaukee. In about 1863 they came to Outagamie county and settled in Appleton, but after a short period went to Grand Chute township, where Mr. Diffording rented a farm for three years. At the end of this time he purchased a forty-acre tract in the same township, but five years later sold this to buy eighty acres in Center township, on section 8, and here he spent the remainder of his life, his death occurring in February, 1909, when he was seventy-nine years of age. Mrs. Diffording died in March, 1893, when sixty-seven years old, and was buried in St. Edward's cemetery, Mackville, while her husband was laid to rest at Twelve Corners. When Mr. Diffording first purchased his eighty acres in Center township, the land was wild and uncultivated, but he had put about seventy-five acres under cultivation by the time of his death, had fenced the entire farm with barbed wire, and had erected a log house and barn. He was one of the energetic and hard-working men of his time and was esteemed and respected by all who knew him. He and his worthy wife were the parents of seven children, William H. being the fifth in order of birth.
    William H. Diffording was twenty-one years of age when he started out in life for himself, and for one year he worked for wages on a farm, then taking up carpenter work for four years as an employe and then working at the bench on his own account for ten years. During this time he managed to save enough of his earnings to invest in a farm of 105 acres in Center township, then wild timber land, and on this, in 1893, he erected a frame house and barn, into which he moved. So steadily and earnestly did he work during the following years that by February, 1908, he had put about seventy-five acres under cultivation, and made extensive improvements, including barbed-wire fencing. In January, 1908, he had purchased his present fine Black Creek township property, and during the following month he moved on to it, where he now carries on general farming, marketing grain and dairy products and shipping hogs and cattle, in addition to breeding blooded horses. He is a republican in political matters, and is now serving very acceptably as clerk of the school board. Mr. Diffording and his family are members of the Lutheran church of Ellington township.
    In March, 1892, Mr. Diffording was married to Miss Annie Riehl, a, native of Outagamie county and daughter of William and Mary (Best) Riehl, and she died in February, 1897, aged twenty-four years, being buried in the Lutheran cemetery in Ellington township. Two sons were born to this union, namely Orrin and Elmer, both single and residing at home. In March, 1899, Mr. Diffording's second marriage was celebrated, when he took for his wife Miss Emma Pollex, daughter of August and Minnie (Sitloff) Pollex, natives of Germany. She was born in this county and died at the age of twenty-seven years, in February, 1903, burial taking place in the Lutheran cemetery. Two children, Nolan and Arlow, both at home, were born to this union. In July, 1905, Mr. Diffording was married (third) to Hilda Johnson, daughter of John and Helen (Olson) Johnson, natives of Sweden and Norway respectively. Mr. Johnson died in the fall of 1903, while his widow still survives. Mrs. Diffording, who was the youngest of a family of five children, was born July 20, 1881, and came to America in May, 1903. There have been three children born to this union: Evelyn, William and Charles.

    Bob Defferding, age 93, passed away at the Appleton Medical Center on Sunday evening, March 3, 2012. Bob was born in Appleton on April 24, 1918, son of the late Joseph and Rose (Deltgen) Defferding. He was a graduate of the Birnamwood High School and he began his carpentry career building barns. Later he moved to Appleton and began working for his uncles building homes. Bob then entered the United States Army, serving from 1941 to 1946. There he was instrumental in the building and repair of many World War II airstrips in the Pacific. He married the former Dorothy Hentschel in Birnamwood on July 29, 1943. After the war, Bob returned to Appleton and began work for Theo. Utschig & Son Company, and was heavily involved with most of the new construction at Miller Electric at that time. He stayed with the company until it disbanded. Bob was a longtime member of the Carpenters Union 955 and later worked as an independent consultant and construction manager. Bob and Dorothy enjoyed many years traveling to their cottage near Rhinelander.
    Bob is survived by his wife: Dorothy Defferding of Appleton; two children: Dennis Defferding of Greenville and his companion Jill; Debbie (Scott) Douglas of Rindge, New Hampshire; six grandchildren: Wendy (Stan) Latender, Corey Defferding, Alex Douglas, Colette Douglas, Tracy (Tony) Griggs, and Trevor (Clare) Schulz; eight great-grandchildren: Nat, Nane, Weske, Will, Logan, Owen, Gabriel, and Jonah; a brother: Conley (Delores) Defferding of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Karen Schulz, and a grand-daughter-in-law Katie Defferding.
    The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 912 N. Oneida Street in Appleton with Rev. Kurt Kovanen officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and again at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.

    Florella M. Stephan, 94, of Black Creek passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Appleton Health Care Center. She was born April 1, 1918 daughter of the late Arthur and Lillie (Daelke) Defferding. On Jan. 14, 1935 she was united in marriage to William Stephan in Spooner. He preceded her in death in March 1983.
    Florella was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Black Creek. She was involved in Senior Citizens of Black Creek, Black Creek Homemakers and was a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Seymour for many years. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo with family and friends.
    Survivors include her children: Deloris Chizek, Black Creek; Thomas (Pat) Stephan, Arizona; son-in-law Robert Schmidt, Appleton; 20 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; brothers: Roy Geiger, Appleton; Elmer (Bev) Geiger, Appleton; sister Betty Young, Clintonville; sisters-in-law: Amy Geiger and Connie Geiger

    Age 64, died unexpectedly Friday, December 5, 2003 at his home. He was born August 4, 1939 the son of the late Laurence and Laura (Vick) Defferding. On August 31, 1963 he married Eileen Nemitz.
    Earl belonged to the Model A Club where he and Eileen met many nice people. He was also a member of the Lakeshore and Fox Valley Tractor Clubs. He participated in various steam shows in the area. He loved his "cottage-like" home and enjoyed the yard work involved with living there. He will be dearly missed by his pet Chihuahua's --Tanner, Ollie, Pork and Coco.
    He will be sadly missed by his wife, Eileen; sisters and brother: Beverly (Hugo) Graper, Clintonville; Ruth (Ronald) Young, Kentucky; Leon Defferding, Town of Center; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Marion Kuharski, Rush Lake; Roger Orvis, Rosendale; Marjorie (Albert) Ewald, Berlin; Edmund (Beverly) Nemitz, Van Dyne; Ervin (Carla) Nemitz, Van Dyne; Ronald (Judy) Nemitz, Oshkosh; JoAnn Nemitz, Menasha.     Leon A. Defferding, age 66, of the Town of Center passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014 at his home. He was born October 12, 1947 a son of the late Lawrence and Laura (Vick) Defferding.
    Following graduation from Seymour High School Leon worked on the family dairy farm with his father and continued to operate the farm until his retirement.
    Leon was a member of the two cylinder tractor club and was also a collector of John Deere engines. He enjoyed going to the various tractor shows and county fairs in the area.
    He is survived by two sisters: Beverly (Hugo) Graper, Clintonville; Ruth Young, Naples, FL; nephews: David (Mary) Graper, Randy (Lois) Graper, Steven (Cathie) Young, Darrell Young; niece, Laurie (Richard) Mackert; sister-in-law, Eileen Defferding; further survived by other relatives and friends.
    In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Defferding.

    Karene loved nature, bird watching and being at her cabin on the Wolf River in Shiocton. She will be missed by her family and friends because of her love and compassion of others.

    Karen M. Schulz, Appleton, 57, passed away on Friday morning, May 25, 2007, after a short stay at St. Elizabeth Hospital, following a heart attack. She was born on Aug. 2, 1949, in Appleton to Robert and Dorothy (Hentschel) Defferding. Karen was a member of the Appleton Senior High School graduating class of 1967. Most recently, she was employed by E.C.C.- International, Marsh, and I.P.S. Karen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, antiquing, sewing, knitting, crocheting, photography, and spending time with children, especially her own grandchildren.
    She will be sadly missed by her children, Tracy (Tony) Griggs, Duluth, Minn.; Trevor (Clare Wire) Schulz, Appleton; grandsons, Logan and Owen Griggs; parents, Robert and Dorothy Defferding, Appleton; siblings, Dennis Defferding, Greenville; Deb (Scott) Douglas, Rindge, N.H.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her special friend, Fred Wolfgram.
    Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Zion Lutheran Church, 912 N. Oneida Street, Appleton, with the Rev. Larry Matthews officiating. Friends may call at the church from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Karen's name.

On February 20, 1957, she married Robert Schmidt, Sr. in Black Creek; he survives. Lorraine dedicated her entire life to serving her Lord and the needs of others. For many years she volunteered her time for the AAA Pregnancy Counseling Center. She was a longtime and faithful member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Stephensville, and for the past twenty years at St. Peter Ev. Lutheran Church in Freedom, where she was active in the Ladies Aid, the hot lunch program, as a Sunday School teacher, and in other capacities as well. Lorraine will also be remembered for her work as a service associate at Appleton Medical Center. In her free time, Lorraine loved to play cards with family and friends.
    Lorraine is survived by her mother: Florella Stephan, formerly of Black Creek; her husband: Robert Schmidt of Appleton; six children: Robert (Karen) Schmidt, Jr. of Black Creek; Robin (Randy) Ashman of Seymour; Rhonda (Scott) Mahnke of Appleton; Shelly (Bill) Henn of Appleton; Ryan (Bobbie Jo) Schmidt of Hortonville; and Gina (Travis) Van Straten of Hortonville; nineteen grandchildren: Sara (Chad) Scheibe, Andy Schmidt and his fiancee Melissa, Laura Schmidt, Casey Ashman, Calvin Ashman, Katrina Ashman and her fiance Troy, Kyle Ashman, Tricia Mahnke, David Mahnke, Carter Mahnke, Chelsey Henn, Stephanie Henn, Tiffany Henn, Whitney Henn, Willie Henn, Dylan Schmidt, Avery Schmidt, Trevor Van Straten, and Trey Van Straten; two great-grandchildren: Calli and Logan Scheibe. Lorraine is also survived by a sister: Deloris (Ed) Chizek of Black Creek; a brother: Tom (Pat) Stephan of Kingman, Arizona; several brothers and sisters-in-law: Shirley Penner of Oneida; Deloris Schmidt of Shiocton; Don (Judy) Schmidt of Appleton; Audrey (Bob) Flunker of Appleton; Elaine Schmidt of Appleton; Ralph (Donna) Schmidt of Black Creek; and Judy (Milton) Pelky of Hortonville; and longtime family friends Larry (Susie) Young. Lorraine is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father, an infant daughter: Rose Marie Schmidt; a grandson: Lucas Schmidt; brothers: Donald (Betsy) Stephan and William Stephan, Jr.; Bob's parents: Arthur and Hilda Schmidt; and brothers-in-law: Roger Schmidt, Ruben Schmidt, and Jack Schmidt.
    The Christian Funeral for Lorraine will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009, at ST. PETER EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, N2749 French Road in Appleton, with Rev. Tim Glende officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. A memorial fund is being established in Lorraine's memory.
    Lorraine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. While her unexpected passing causes us deep grief today, we know that she is in God's presence now, singing His praises for eternity.

    Black Creek - Dennis Lee Defferding, 65, of Black Creek, passed away Friday morning, March 9, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born August 15, 1952, son of Dorothy (Schultz) Defferding and the late Keith Defferding.
    He served in the US Army from 1972 to 1975. On February 24, 1979 he was united in marriage to Sharon Mc Niesh, having celebrated 39 years of marriage.
    Dennis worked as a custodian at the Shiocton School for over 20 years prior to his retirement. He cherished his family, especially the grandchildren.
    He is survived by his wife, Shari; his two sons: Scott (Julie Heindl) Defferding and Eric (Sara) Defferding; grandchildren: Cassidy, Logan and Hayden; mother, Dorothy Defferding; siblings: LuAnn (Ken) Huck, Nancy (Glenn) Neff and John (Lisa) Defferding; mother-in-law, Lorraine Mc Niesh, brother-in-law: Bill (Lois) Mc Niesh; sister-in-law, Donna (Bob) Koch; and best friend, Dave Betters.
    Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 201 E. Birch Street, Black Creek on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 9:30 am until the funeral service at 11:00 am with Pastor Steve Schlicht officiating. Military honors will take place at the church.
    In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Dennis's memory.
