1. DANIAL¹ RICE was born Abt. 1776 in New Hampshire, and died April 23, 1859 in Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co. New York. He married PHEBE BARRETT Abt. 1798. She was born Abt. 1776 in Vermont, and died April 26, 1842.

Notes for DANIAL RICE:
The 1850 census of Cape Vincent includes as residents on the Daniel Rice household a Sylvia Rice, 64, and a Flora Rice, 16. Sylvia may have been his second wife, and Flora either a daughter or granddaughter. Daniel's will is recorded at Canton NY. The ancestry of Daniel has not been positively identified, although Mrs. Roberts does discuss several possibilities pertaining to the origin of his family. From [Grains of Rice] by Evelyn Rice Robert's. Evelyn was a Latter Day Saint. She died in Pasco, Washington, in Jan, Feb, or Mar of 2001.
The last will and testament of Daniel Rice of Cape Vincent in the county of Jefferson and state of New York. I Daniel Rice age seventy five years being of sound mind & memory. But, knowing the uncertainty of this life & being desirous to make such disposion of my property as shall be just will and testament as follows. First - I direct that out of my estate all my just debts & funeral expenses be paid. Second - I give and bequeath to my son Truman Rice the note and demands I have against him amounting in the whole to about $230, besides the interest. My intention is in this request to have him fully discharged from all claims I have against him, in full satisfaction of all claims against my estate. Thirdly - I give and bequeath the rest and remainder of my estate real and personal of every number and kind to my other five children. That is to say to my sons Leander Rice, Harlow Rice, Daniel Rice Jr., and my daughter Lydia Prichard, to be equaled divided between them, but in the settlement of my estate my son Leander is to be charged with the some of one hundred dollars that I have advanced to him, and my daughter Lydia is to have my bureau free and clear before the division of my estate. And I hereby appoint Albert Rice of Clayton, executor of this my last will and testament with full power and authority hereby granted to him to sell & Convey any or all of my real estate. And I hereby revoke all former wills by me made or executed. In witness thereof I have herewith set my hand & seal this 18th day of May 1852. Signed "Daniel Rice" with witnesses. I Daniel Rice do make as a codicil to my last will & and testament the following. The sum bequeathed to my son Leander , except the one hundred dollars is hereby revoked, and the one hundred dollars is to be fully discharged , and the estate is to be equally divided amongst my other children as in my will expressed with my hand and seal this 24th day of February,1853 Signed "Daniel Rice" with witnesses. MRS. JAMES HAMILTON
Mrs. James Hamilton died at her home, 820 Desnoyer-st, Kaukauna, Thursday morning after an iltness of about four months.. She was born Jan. 8, 1849, at Lyme. N. Y. Survivors are two sons, Jesse of Kaukauna and Ben of Manitowoc; and three daughters, Mrs. Matt Gerharz. and the Misses Elsie and Mabel Hamilton, all of Kaukauna. The funeral will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon at the home, with the Rev. Roscoe Barnes in charge. Burial will be in Kelso cemetery.

Funeral Services Are Conducted at Residence by Rev. Roscoe Barnes
Kaukauna - Funeral services for Mrs. James Hamilton, 8O, who died Thursday morning at her home; 820 Desnoyer-st, after an illness of four months, were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the residence. The Rev. Roscoe Barnes, pastor of the Methodist church, was in charge of the services. Burial was in Kelso cemetery. Mrs; Hamilton was born in 1848 in Lyme, N. Y.; and came to Kaukauna at the age of five years. She is one of the pioneers of the Fox river valley. The widower also is a pioneer of the valley and a veteran of the Civil war. Survivors are the widower; three daughters; Mrs. Mike Gerhartz, and Misses Elva and Mabel of this city; two sons, Jesse of Kaukauna and Ben of Manitowoc; and four grandchildren. Pall bearers were August Wierauch, Anton Frank, Alex Wolf, John Hahne, Otto Busse and Charles Heitling. Out-of-town people at the funeral were Mrs. Mary Hamilton of St. Cloud, Minn.; Mrs. Robert Simpson of Chicago; Jules Simpson of Seymour; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Simpson, Sr., of Seymour; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Eraser, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fellows, Miss Sadie Banker, Mrs. M. Payzant and Miss Ida Payzant of Appleton; Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Knickerbocker, Mrs. Joseph White and Mrs. Eli Peterson, of Wausau and Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Ellis of Oconto Falls.

Biography:
ALLEN A. FRASER, who owns and operates a large lumber yard and planing mill at Appleton, Wisconsin, is one of the successful self-made men of that city. He has been a life-long resident of Appleton, where he was born November 23, 1872, a son of Hugh and Evelyn (Fish) Fraser, the former a native of Scotland and the latter of Jefferson county, New York. Hugh Fraser came to Outagamie county, Wisconsin, in 1861, and during the remainder of his life was engaged in agricultural pursuits, dying December 9, 1903, while his widow still survives. Seven children were born to this couple: Jessie, who married Louis Tachman, a resident of Outagamie county; Allen A.; Nellie; Sadie, who married Harlow Brown, a resident of Alberta, Canada; Hugh, engaged with Allen A. in business; Warren, who is deceased; and Edward, who is also engaged in business with Allen A. The latter received his education in the public schools of Appleton, and as a young man learned the carpenter trade, starting contracting on April 17, 1903. In April, 1910, he opened the lumber yard and planing mill, and in addition to operating these he does general contracting, having met with unqualified success. His office and storage building is 48x80 feet and is two stories in height, steam power being used in operating the machinery and twenty-nine men being employed. Mr. Fraser has handled some large contracts, notable among which may be mentioned the chapel at the Riverside Cemetery, and the dormitory at Lawrence College, the latter piece of work being done in 1911. On June 30, 1896, Mr. Fraser was married to Carrie Metthes, of Appleton, daughter of John Metthes, and they have had five children. Mr. Fraser is a member of the Odd Fellows, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Eagles, in all of which he is immensely popular.

Mrs. Robert M. Simpson (Gertrude Gerharz) Formerly of 1839 S. Bouten St. Age 76, passed away at3:30 p.m. Sunday following a one year illness. She was born March 8, 1879 in Kaukauna and lived in Chicago for forty years until moving to Appleton twelve years ago. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and the Aooleton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Edith Fellows, Appleton; two brothers, A.J. "Huck" Gerharz, Bellaire Bluffs, Florida; Kenneth Gerharz, Muscatine, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband September 10, 1970. Complete funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Wichmann Funeral Home with Rev. Herman F. Thomas officiating. Interment will be in the Kelso Cemetery, Kaukauna. Rammer, Ruth R. (Paschen) Ruth R. Rammer, age 93, died Saturday evening, Feb. 18, 2006, at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 28, 1912, in Kaukauna, to the late William and Mary (Rice) Paschen. Ruth graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1930 and Kaukauna Normal School in 1931. She taught school in Black Creek and Greenville from 1931-1938, in a one room schoolhouse with all eight grades. Ruth married Joseph G. Rammer on June 22, 1943, in Niagara Falls, New York; he preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 1996. Ruth and Joe built their home on Adams Street in Neenah and lived there for over 50 years. Joe and Ruth loved traveling and were avid campers. They spent many happy winters in Oleander Acres, Texas. Ruth was a member of First United Methodist Church, Neenah, where she taught Sunday School for many years, the United Methodist Women, Elizabeth Circle and the Asbury Club of the church. She was also the surviving member of the Sew-What Club.
Ruth and Joe had three children, sons, James (Sharon) Rammer, Menasha; John Rammer, Appleton. She was preceded in death by her precious daughter, Mary Alice in 1970. Family was everything to Ruth. Besides her boys, Ruth leaves her beloved grandchildren, Brian (Jennifer) Rammer, Darboy; Christina (Scott) Kelly, Darboy; as well as her four great grandchildren, Courtney and Kelsey Rammer and Lauren and Ryan Kelly. Ruth also leaves her sister, Alice (Leonard) Stockmeier, Tucson, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Frances Paschen, Kaukauna; a brother-in-law, Chester (Muriel) Rammer and a sister-in-law, Germaine Frank, Whitefish Bay, Wis.; and special niece and nephew, Gail (Harvey) Jansen and family, Tucson, Ariz.; and Craig (Grazyna) Stockmeier and family, Jackson, Miss.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Howard Paschen, her great-grandson, Ethan Kelly and most recently (just ten days) by her childhood friend, Gladys Cook.
Funeral services for Ruth will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 108 West Doty Street, Neenah, with Reverend Gordon Lind officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Neenah. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established.

Andrew E. Lambie, Combined Locks, age 85, died on Thursday evening, November 3, 2011 at Appleton Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born on November 26, 1925 in Appleton, son of the late Thurston and Florence (West) Lambie. On June 28, 1947, he was united in marriage to Elaine A. Kampo in Appleton. Andrew was an US Navy Veteran and served on the USS LST 121 during WWII. Upon returning from the South Pacific, he worked at Appleton Papers in Combined Locks until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Local 144 International Paper Union where he held the position of Chief Steward for several years. He was a member of VFW Post # 10544 of Combined Locks and the American Legion Post #258 in Little Chute. Andrew was a lifelong member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Combined Locks.
Andrew is survived by two daughters: Barb Glasheen and Deb (Mike) Zornow; four sons: Tom (Donna), Bob (Kim), Dave (Roswitha), Todd (Sherry) Lambie; a daughter-in-law Terri Lambie (special friend John Delie); 15 grandchildren: Bill Glasheen, Tania Zornow, Jason (Julie) Lambie, Ryan Glasheen (friend Melissa), Tara (Randy) Nerison, Matt (Katie) Lambie, Angela (Josh) Brantmeier, Erica (Aaron) Kroner, Amber Lambie, Natascha, Nicholas, and Nathan Lambie, Michael and Sara Lambie, Emily Lambie; nine great-grandchildren: Blake, Austin, and Conner Zornow, Aiden and Lila Glasheen, Morgan and Seamus Glasheen, Bryce Kuehl, and Tanner Nerison; two sisters: Sally (Mark) Jansen and Lois Simons. Staff Sgt. William Miller received a letter of commendation from Brig. Gen. Herren which states: "When a comrade was wounded in action in France on January 12, 1945, you left your covered position, across snow-covered terrain which was constantly being blanketed by enemy shell fire to lead him to safety. Later you guided an aided men across open terrain under artillery fire to give aid to and successfully evacuate six wounded man. Your actions were an inspiration to the other men in your company and it is with great pride that I commend you." Sgt. Miller entered service in February 1943. He wears the ETO ribbon with four battle stars, the combat infantry badge and the good conduct ribbon.

Lilly Mae Miller Gerrits, 82, passed away March 13, 2012 at her home with Brian and Lynn at her side. Lilly was born February 25, 1930 in Kaukauna, daughter of the late Michael and Margaret (Lambie) Miller. On September 8, 1951, Lilly married the late Robert M. Gerrits at Immaculate Conception Church in Oneida.
Lilly enjoyed traveling and was a hostess for Alberts Tours. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and her XYZ Club in Kaukauna.

Elsie Lou Kobs nee Miller (Knott), age 78, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at her home with her family by her side. She was born on Novemer 22, 1932 in Kaukauna daughter of the late Michael and Margaret (Lambie) Miller. In 1951 Elsie married Roy Knott Sr., the marriage produced 5 children Mike (Barb)and their family; Mary (Greg) Fox and their children Bret, Claire and Cody, Melanie Knott (Kristin VandenHouten), Melissa (Don) Hearn and their children Zoey and Kiley, Steve (Denise)and their family; Kelly Knott and her daughter Olivia, Nicole (Ethan) Jansen, Kasey (Chris) Van Groll, Kristin Knott, Lynn Knott and her son Shaun Knott (special friend Jessica Douglas and her children Tiffany, Michael and Natalee), Kay (Bob) Tucker and their family, Christine Gerhartz and her children Haylie and Cooper, her stepchildren Robbie (fiancé Shauna) Tucker and her children Dallas and Allen, Scott (Britney) Tucker and their children Brooklyn and Cash, Roy Jr.(Rose) Knott and his stepchildren Samantha Zierler and Christopher (Kristina) Trainer and their children Brook and Morgan.
On May 22, 1988 Elsie married David Kobs at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Kaukauna. The couple lived in Darboy their entire married lives.
She is further survived by her loving stepchildren; Terri Gravett-Kobs and her son Bryce, John (Cher) Kobs and their sons Travis and Tyler, Vicki (Douglas) Tessen and their children Kayla, Rachel and Jared, Brian Kobs and his son, Alex. Elsie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a hard working, caregiving individual.
Through the years she had been employed at North Shore, Butte Des Morts Country Club, Babe Van Kamps Supper Club, and ended her working years at Piggly Wiggly.
She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ. Elsie loved bowling, playing cards, traveling with her husband Dave, and the occasionally trip to the casino.
Elsie is further survived by her brothers Mike (Colleen) Miller, Ron (LaVerne) Miller, sisters-in-law Myrna Miller, LaVerne Miller and Mary Miller. Also surviving is a sister Lilly Mae Gerrits and numerous, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Roy in 1998, 3 brothers Herb, William and Adam and a brother-in-law, Robert Gerrits.

Jean F. Kafura, age 84 of Big Lake, Gresham, formerly of Appleton, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013. Born on July 25, 1929 in Appleton, she is the daughter of the late Harry and Edith (Gerharz) Fellows. On November 28, 1947, Jean was united in marriage to Frederick Kafura who preceded her in death on January 12, 2008. Jean loved the holidays, especially decorating, cooking, baking and liked to refer to herself as a household engineer. She enjoyed antiques and nature, in particular, wildflowers and bird-watching, she also enjoyed traveling, especially trips with Fred to Europe and later winters in New Smyrna Beach, FL, visiting friends and family. Jean was an exceptionally giving individual, volunteering with Outagamie County Cancer Society and also at the Appleton Medical Center Gift Shop where she especially enjoyed arranging the window displays. She was a former officer and lifetime member of the AMC Hospital Auxiliary and was very involved with the Red Barn in Shawano. Jean was a member of both the Appleton Y's Menettes, and the Gresham Women's Club. She was very involved in the Salem United Methodist Church, especially the building committee and the church's annual bazarre. Jean traveled far and wide in search of the area's best pie and ice cream, and enjoyed sharing her findings with those who asked.
Jean is survived by: her sons, John (Jane), Kim (Connie), David (Kathy); daughters, Jody and Kerry; grandchildren, Brian, Mark, Heidi, Jason, Errick, Peter; brother-in-law, John (Molly); niece, Heidi Garvin; nephews, Craig and Christopher (Vicki) Kafura, Dick and Bob Fellows; and her beloved cat, Maggie.
She is preceded in death by: her husband, Frederick; her parents and her brother, Keith Fellows.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Salem United Methodist Church in Red River with the Rev. Loretta Waegli officiating. Rosemary Keil, age 87, of Kaukauna, entered eternal life on July 30, 2013, at Appleton Medical Center. Rosemary married Willard Keil on March 2, 1946, in Kaukauna. During their 67 years of marriage, they raised a loving, close family. Over the years, she worked at Kaukauna Klub Cheese, Prange-Way and Pechman's. Being a devoted mother and homemaker was by far her favorite job. She loved to bake and share her banana nut bread. Rosemary was an avid Brewers and Packers fan. Fishing was another favorite pastime. Her special knitting talent was admired by all. She was humble, kind and friendly.
Rosemary prayed daily for her family: her husband, Willard; her son, Tom (Judy) Keil, Kaukauna; her daughter, Karen (Bill) Lueders, Sheboygan; her daughter-in-law, Karol Keil, Menasha; her brother, Floyd Stegeman, Kaukauna; her grandchildren, Amy (Pete) Van Dusen, Rhonda (Ray) Brantmeier, Todd (Julie) Keil, Tim (Becky) Keil, Renee (Ed) Miller, and Trish (Doug) Weinke. Donald R. "Don" Stegeman, Kaukauna, age 81, passed away at Appleton Medical Center on Sunday, February 3, 2008, with his loving wife of 59 years and family by his side. He was born in Kaukauna on July 13, 1926, the son of the late Royal Stegeman and Wilma Stegeman-Kent. Donald enlisted in the Navy when he was 17 years old, and was proud to have served on the U.S.S. Isherwood DD-520 in the Pacific during WWII. On June 26, 1948, he married Julia Vosters at St. John Catholic Church, Little Chute. He was employed by Thilmany for over 42 years, retiring in 1988. Don enjoyed spending time with his family; square dancing, traveling, shopping and time at his cottage at Lake Winnebago. He was especially proud of being the Secretary-Treasurer of the U.S.S Isherwood DD-520 Association, and organized many reunions for the organization throughout the United States.
Don is survived by his wife, Julia; children: Wilma (Marvin) Van Rossum of Stockbridge, Dr. Ronald (Dona) Stegaman, D.D.S. of Janesville, and Scott (Katy) Stegeman of Kimberly; grandchildren: Ashleigh Stegeman, Alexander (Stephanie) Stegeman, Amanda (fiance, Matt) Stegeman and Nicholas and Ethan Stegeman; step-grandchildren: Bryan (Kay), Michael (Beth), Jeffery (Char), Mark (Jenny), and Sherry Van Rossum, and Karen (Jeff) Klieber; brother, Harvey (Anna Mae) Stegeman of Wyoming, MI; brother-in-law: Louis (special friend, Jan) Vosters of Palm Springs, CA; and sisters-in-law: Bernice (Paul) Boucher of Gresham and Hazel (special friend, Willie) Vosters of Little Chute. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his step-father, Everett Kent; father- and mother-in-law, Herman and Mathilda Vosters; son-in-law, Ernest "Ernie" Cram, III; brothers-in-law, Marvin and Urban Vosters; sister-in-law, Joyce Vosters.
The funeral service will be at 12 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Star of Hope Chapel, Highland Memorial Park, 3131 N. Richmond St., Appleton, with Pastor Samuel Garbi officiating, with a military honor service to follow conducted by the William Verhagen Post #60, Kimberly. Friends will be received at the chapel on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment will be in the Highland Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff of the I.C.U and 2 South Cardiology at Appleton Medical Center; especially Will, Randy, Travis, Kelly, Amy and Ryan for their compassionate care.
