The Buzz: Winery opens, Meadows closes, Apple coming
The Kerrigan Brothers Winery was named for the two black sheep of the Kerrigan family. "They were my grandmother's brothers and they liked to drink," said winery owner Troy Landwehr. "They were true Irishmen."
On Saturday, Landwehr opened a new winery named in their honor in Freedom on the site of his grandparents' farm. It's at N2797 State 55, three miles north of U.S. 41. Phone 920-788-1423.
Prior to this, the eight-year-old winery was in a commercial space attached to his parents' home in Little Chute. That site is now closed.
Landwehr plans to develop the new winery in stages and figures the investment, minus land, is around $350,000.
Those who visit at this early point will see the retail shop where they can taste fruit wines and purchase bottles, wine accessories and wine-theme gift baskets. In a month, the wine producing equipment will be moved over from the old location.
"The production facility is 40 percent bigger," he said. "We'll have a 1,000-gallon-a-month capacity."
Next summer, Landwehr plans on putting in orchards and gardens that will round out his 10-acre property and eventually supply some of the apples, rhubarb, raspberries and gooseberries he uses to make wine.
The slower roll out is necessary because the operation is largely family run. Landwehr is helped by his parents, Dick and Karin, a few part-time production assistants and an army of friends during the bottling season.
Landwehr is also nationally known for his sideline as a cheese carver, and that takes a chunk of time in the summer for both national and local appearances.

Troy married Graff, Alena [Group Sheet]
