    Biography:
OTTO TECHLIN, a worthy representative of one of Freedom township's old and honored families, who is now operating the old Techlin homestead, was born February 11, 1882, on the farm he now conducts, and is a son of Frederick and Sophia (Rusche) Techlin, natives of Germany. Frederick Techlin was born in Prussia, June 11, 1838, and came to the United States in the fall of 1857, sailing from Hamburg on the sailing vessel "Hobart," and reaching New York after a voyage of more than fourteen weeks. For a little over a year he worked for a farmer in Rockland county, New York, and then came west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the vicinity of which city he found employment among the farmers until he was joined by his parents, with whom he came to Center township, Outagamie county. He first acquired forty acres in Center township, but after making a few improvements sold it and bought fifty-seven acres in Freedom township. This land was all in the timber, Mr. Techlin's implements were an axe and a hand-spike and the first house was an old log cabin, but after many years of hard and unremitting toil these gave way to 137 acres of finely cultivated farming land, a full and modern set of farming machinery and an excellent brick house, and here Frederick Techlin spent the remainder of his life, dying in 1905. On September 14, 1865, he was married to Sophia Rusche of Milwaukee, and they had a family of nine children, of whom six are now living. The mother still lives on the old homestead. Otto Techlin received all of his schooling in the district schools of the neighborhood of his home, and he has always been engaged in agricultural pursuits there. He has never left the home place, and at the time of the death of his father he took charge of the property which he is still operating as a general farm. On January 15, 1905, he was married to Hattie Krueger, daughter of Charles Krueger, of Freedom township, and four children have been born to this union: Adaline, Hilda, Harold and Edwin. The family belongs to the German Lutheran Church of Freedom.

    Biography:
FRED W. RUSCHER, who has been engaged in agricultural operations in Outagamie county since 1903, now owns an excellent property in Grand Chute township, on which he carries on general farming and dairying. He was born in Center township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, September 12, 1875, and is a son of Herman and Caroline (Tecklin) Ruscher. Herman Ruscher wa.s born in Milwaukee county, near Milwaukee, September 29, 1851, and his wife in Germany, September 18, 1840. In early life he worked as a farm hand and at the carpenter's trade, and when about twenty years of age came to Outagamie, county, where for a time he was employed by various farmers in Grand Chute township. Eventually he settled on the farm now operated by his son, which at that time belonged to Mrs. Ruscher, and here he continued to live until 1904, in which year he retired and moved to Appleton, and in that city Mrs. Ruscher died June 24, 1907. They were the parents of three children: Fred W.; Lizzie, the wife of William Schultz, a Ludington township farmer; and Anna, the wife of Ernest Ferg, a millwright of Appleton. Mrs. Ruscher had been previously married to Henry Witt, by whom she had four children, namely: William, who resides with Fred W. Ruscher; John, a farmer of Black Creek township; Henry, who is deceased; and Julius, a farmer of Grand Chute township. Fred W. Ruscher attended the district schools of Grand Chute township, and in his youth worked out among the farmers of his neighborhood until he had learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed in Hortonville, Appleton, Milwaukee and Shawano county, until he was twenty-eight years of age, at which time he settled on the old homestead. He now owns seventy-two acres of highly cultivated property in Grand Chute township, and thirty-eight acres in Greenville township, and engages extensively in dairy farming, keeping a fine herd of thoroughbred Holstein cattle for this purpose. On October 5, 1904, Mr. Ruscher was married to Miss Minnie Schraeder, born September 7, 1881, in Appleton, whose parents, Julius and Amelia (Witt) Schraeder, were both born in Germany, the former July 13, 1848, and the latter May 10, 1862. The father came to America when but seven years of age, and grew to maturity in Sugar Bush, Outagamie county, working out as a farm hand until he was able to purchase a farm in Center township, where he and his wife are still living. Mrs. Ruscher is the oldest of her parents' twelve children, and secured her education in district school No. 8, Center township. Mr. and Mrs. Ruscher have had four children: Martha, born August 29, 1905; Clara, born November 12, 1906; Herman, born July 22, 1908; and Viola, born July 8, 1910. They are consistent members of Greenville Lutheran Church.

Gun's Accidental Discharge Kills Farmer On Hunt
Emro Ziegler Is Shot In Lung When Trigger Catches As He Stoops To Recover Rifle Aft- er It Has Fallen An accidental gunshot added an- other death Sunday to the hunting tragedies of the season and deprived a young wife and two small children of their husband and father. Emro Ziegler, 29, a farmer of the town of Grand Chute, lies dead at his home as the result of the discharge of his shotgun while he was recovering it from the ground during a rabbit hunting expedition at the George Plamann farm. He died almost instantly after the shot had pierced his lung. Ziegler was one of nine men in a party which set out Sunday morn- ing to hunt rabbits. The morning was to be devoted to the hunt and there was to be a dinner party at noon at the Edward Plamann farm home. Others in the party were Ernest Springstroh and Artur, Edward and George Plamann, brothers-in-law. Edward Kubitz of Freedom, and three Milwaukee young men who were visiting the Ziegler families.
    WERE SEEKING RABBITS
The hunters had reached a clear- ing at about 10 o'clock and had sent dogs into the brush to drive the rabbits from shelter. Each man took position on a stump ready to fire at the game when it appeared. Ziegler rose to a stump and as he did so dropped his gun. It slid down- ward between his legs. He reached down without stepping of the stump, took hold of the end of the gun barrel and pulled the weapon upward be- tween his legs holding it in both hands close to his body. The trigger caught on a projection of the stump or in the weeds or stubble around it just as the muzzle had reached a position below the lungs. It went off and the shot pierced a lung, severing one of the main arteries from the heart. Companions rushed to the man's aid and one of them started for the farmhouse to summon medical aid. He uttered a cry, "I'm shot the heart," and died in the arms of his friends.
    APPLETON COUPLES SON
The gun victim is a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Ziegler, 952 Lawe-st and is a nephew of G. D. Ziegler. president of the Aid Association for Lutherans. He leaves a widow and two children, Carl. 5. and Gerald. 2. He is survived also by four brothers. Walter, Green- ville; Arthur and Hebert. Appleton; Edward. Center. He had operated his present farm for about seven years. Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home in Grand Chute, and thereafter at St. Paul Lutheran church. Free- dom. The Rev. G. A. Dettmann will be in charge. Burial will be made in St. Peter Lutheran cemetery.

    Obituary:
Carl Arthur Stapel, 78, died peacefully Feb. 5, 2009, surrounded by his family. Carl was born March 23, 1930, to Arthur and Marie Stapel at home in Menasha, Wisconsin. He was baptized April 27, 1930, at St. Pauls Lutheran in Neenaha/Menasha and confirmed April 18, 1943, at First English Lutheran in Appleton. While at Appleton High School Carl was a mile runner on the track team, and represented the school at the state track meet. He also was involved in many science projects and won national awards for his invention of the optiphone which, long before fiber optics and laser beams, allowed one to speak over a beam of light. For this and other work Carl was made an honorary member of the Wisconsin Academy of Science. He gave many talks about his science experiments across the US during his high school years. Carl was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he was also on the track team and majored in nuclear physics and economics, earning his bachelor's degree in 1953. While there he worked with Dr. Link building the equipment and running the experiments that lead to Warfarin and Coumadin. Carl joined the Naval Reserves while in high school. He was called to active service while at college. He completed his military service as an admiral's radioman and was a junior officer. In 1949 (while he was a student at the university) Carl and his parents Art and Marie purchased the Kitz and Pfeil Hardware business. It was then a 2,000 square foot store on Main Street in Oshkosh. His mother Marie and cousin Harold Springstrogh ran the business while he completed his education and military service. On July 12, 1958, Carl married the love of his life, Leona, at Our Savior's Lutheran in Iron Mountain, MI. In 2008, on the same day, date and time, they were surrounded by hundreds of friends and family as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have two sons: Jim who lives in Oshkosh and Bill who is married to Jackie Spring-Stapel who live in Chicago with their daughter Zo, who brings continual joy into all their lives. Carl is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Marie as well as all his aunts and uncles.
With the help of exceptional co-workers, under Carl's leadership Kitz & Pfeil grew to the five hardware stores (plus power equipment centers and repair shops) that it is today. In the early 1960s Carl wrote the computer programs which made Kitz & Pfeil the first hardware store in the state, and possibly the country, to have computer control of its inventory. This let the hardware stores provide not only excellent service, but also have what people wanted when then needed it. It always pleased Carl that for many years now (including 2008) Kitz & Pfeil has been recognized as being one the top 50 hardware stores in the United States. After his son Jim took over the hardware business, Carl started the Travel Division. For the last 20 years Carl, Leona and Jim have taken thousands of people on group tours around the world. Both in the hardware business and in his travels Carl has made many wonderful and interesting friends, and the family wants you all to know the joy you brought into Carl's life.
Carl was active at his church, First English Lutheran-Oshkosh, where his volunteer activities included servicing on a pastoral call committee and taking photos of the congregation's events, special services and anniversaries. After living in Oshkosh for almost 40 years, Carl and Leona moved back to Appleton. There he joined the Appleton Rotary which afforded him not only the chance for service through the club's activities, but also to regularly meet with friends. While residing in Oshkosh, Carl worked on many community projects (especially those related to improving downtown Oshkosh) and served on numerous boards. He was a past-president of the Wisconsin Retail Hardware Association, Educare (UW-O), Oshkosh Downtown Business Association and the Oshkosh Noon Kiwanis, of which he was a member of over 40 years. In 1993, Carl led the Oshkosh United Way campaign and later with Leona the fund drive for Gabriel's Villa at Lutheran Homes of Oshkosh. For many years Carl served as chairman of the local board of Oshkosh National Bank and its successor banks up to and including Bank One. Some of the boards on which Carl served included CHAMCO, OCDC, the Oshkosh Foundation, The Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Oshkosh Parking Utility.
Early on Carl developed a love for photography and while in college started a 45 year run taking football photos for the Wisconsin Badgers. Carl won many awards for his photos and had them featured in national publications. He also produced slide-tape shows of his foreign travels in the 1960s-1980s which he shared with many church and community groups. Later he embraced video media as well and produced video tapes and DVDs of his tours.
A funeral service will be held at First English Lutheran 1013 Minnesota in Oshkosh, WI at 11 a.m. on Thursday Feb. 12th. Special thanks to the pastors of First English-Oshkosh and Carl's many friends, co-workers and relatives for your cards, emails, letters, visits and especially your prayers. God has answered them with the place he has prepared for Carl in heaven.
Memorials to First English-Oshkosh, the Stapel Organ Scholarship fund at First English-Appleton or the charity of choice would be gratefully accepted.

    Obituary:
Lola Jane Jahnke, on angel's wings went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, after a brief illness. She once wrote that "death can overtake us at any moment, that's true and we should believe that. So it's a good thing to know your life is in order, should it come." Those who called her Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, sister, aunt, and friend knew her life to be in order. With a faith larger than life itself, her legacy teaches us to "be good and love one another." She was first and foremost a mother, but played many roles throughout her life in the lives of others as a care-provider, seamstress, and volunteer with her church family. Family and friends were everything to Lola and she embraced life with great joy. Her personal and spiritual writings will be treasured for many years to come. Words cannot express how deeply she will be missed. Born on February 23, 1926, to Edward and Linda (Plamann) Ziegler in the town of Center, the third oldest of ten, Lola grew to appreciate the rewards of family.
    Surviving are June Maass (Wallace)-Seymour; Phillip (Bev)-Appleton, Don-Appleton; Ken (Lorraine)-Appleton; and Fred-Shawano.
Besides her parents, Lola was preceded in death by brothers Robert & LeRoy and sisters Carol & Janet.
Lola married Floyd J Jahnke on January 20, 1946. She was the mother of eleven children and "delighted" in nurturing all her family right up to the time of her death. She modeled love of family and life in Christ to each of them.

David Ziegler "Ziggie" Please help us celebrate the life of David, who went to heaven on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, just 13 days short of his 69th birthday. God took Dave to be with his "buddy" and father-in-law: Harold, to a place where there is no more knee pain, dripping nose, or COPD. David loved four wheeling, deer hunting, wood crafting, gardening, long drives, vacationing up North, cooking, game shows, and watching westerns, especially Blazing Saddles. David had great math and drawing skills which he would use to make almost anything he had in his mind. David mostly loved being with his family, friends, and the puppies. We will truly miss this great man, loving and protecting husband and father, and the "go to guy." Many wonderful memories and laughs will be cherished and never forgotten from the stories that Dave told, all ending with "the whole ball of wax."
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Cheryl; and the girls: Zoie and Shilo; a son: Chad (Dawn); step grandson: Levi; daughter: Nikki; granddaughter: Aria; step granddaughter: Desiree; sister: Shirley Stevens; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Karlene Ziegler; Robert Yandre, Ronnie (Sharon) Nollenberg, Connie (Dennis) Hedtke, Debra Geiger, and Tina (Scott and Elise) Wagner; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Lonnie (Zerkle) Ziegler; father- and mother-in-law: Harold and Ervie Nollenberg; step son: David Wohlrabe; step grandson: Jade Wholrabe; and siblings: Merle Ziegler and Jean Yandre.
To abide with David's wishes, no funeral or visitation will be held.

    Obituary:
Ruth Louise Schroeder Freiburger of Appleton, aged eighty-nine, passed away August 10 at Anderson Hospice in Madison after a brief illness. She was born in the Town of Center on December 4, 1920, to William and Laura Schulze Schroeder. She was baptized in a German service, December 26, 1920, at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Emil Redlin. Her sponsors were her Grandpa Charles Schroeder, Grandma Louise Schulze and Aunt Alma Beyer. She and her parents were joined by her sisters Marie Emma, Arline Grace, a brother William C., sisters Muriel Marian and Ila Mae and finally by Robert Elmer. Her parents farmed in the Town of Center until 1947.
Ruth attended Hillsdale School, along with many of her cousins, about a half-mile from home, where she received a grade school education and helped to stoke the wood stove. Her education took only six years as she skipped second grade and passed the high school entry exam while in seventh grade. She graduated from Appleton High School and has attended many recent reunions. Ruth continued her education at Outagamie Rural Normal in Kaukauna for two years to become a licensed teacher, then took her first job at Cicero Graded School where she taught the first four grade levels. At a teachers meeting she met John Peter Freiburger of New London. They had their first date on Sunday, December 7, 1941. Both the Second World War and their relationship started that day, both lasting a long time and turning out well in the end. Ruth and John were married June 30, 1945, and honeymooned on Long Island at the home of John's brother George Freiburger. They returned to Wisconsin to live in Chilton where they spent the next thirty-three years, making hundred of friends. A son Steven was born September 27, 1946, and a daughter, Beth Ellen, June 4, 1950. Ruth edited the Chilton Times Journal, was stringer and photographer for several papers and then began teaching at New Holstein in 1955. She earned a B.A. at UW-Oshkosh and became the federal Title I and Title II grant administrator for the New Holstein School District.
She was instrumental in raising funds for a hospital for Chilton, ran the hospital gift shop for many years and helped organize the Chilton American Field Service chapter to bring international students to the schools. She organized a women's basketball league, played tennis, bowled and played golf for many decades. She loved to play bridge, a game she played competitively until a few weeks ago. John and Ruth moved to Florida in 1978 when they both retired. She continued her community work as president of LaSertoma, a library organizer and volunteer teacher at St. Anthony's School. Upon John's death, Ruth returned to Appleton where she has resided at the Touchmark retirement community for the last five years.
Ruth is survived by her children, Steven (Betsy) Freiburger of Fitchburg and Beth Schroeder (Brian Washburn) of Newton, Massachusetts, and granddaughter Therese of Park City, Utah. She is also survived by her sisters Arline Dabill of Neenah and Ila Mae Hanson of Greenville and her brother William Schroeder of Appleton.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents and a brother Robert and sisters Muriel and Marie.
Ruth lived her life with a lively intelligence, with grace, hospitality and community service. She was blessed with a large extended family, which came to include cousins, nieces, nephews and their children, many of whom took the time to visit her in her retirement and gladden her days. We will miss her store of memories, card games and brandy old-fashioned sweets, but rejoice that she had so many days with us, if through tears.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 15 from 2 to 5 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 North Richmond St., Appleton. Visitation will also be at St Mary's Church, 312 S. State Street, Appleton, from 10 to 11 with a service at 11 on Monday, August 16.
Memorials will be given to The Hickory Knoll Fund, a 501C3 charitable organization run by her family, to continue her work in education.

    Obituary:
Appleton - William C. Schroeder Jr., 91, , of Appleton, WI and Spring Hill, FL, died January 17, 2018 at his home in Spring Hill, FL. Bill was born on April 2, 1926, on the family farm, in the Town of Center to the late William and Laura (Schulze) Schroeder. Bill spent his childhood on his parent's farm and attended the local one room school house, through eighth grade. Always ambitious, he worked for his father during the day, but had permission to use the tractor at night to earn extra income working for neighbors. Bill was a veteran of the Korean War and while stationed for part of his duty in Alaska, developed an interest in modular housing. After demobilization, his father joined him in Schroeder Enterprises and they constructed homes together. Looking for new opportunities, he ventured into a little company called Valley Packaging which had begun as a "sheltered workshop". Bill developed Valley Packaging into a highly successful employer through innovation and strong salesmanship, enriching hundreds of lives by providing meaningful employment for both disabled and abled bodied workers.
In his spare time and after retirement Bill loved to be outdoors, be it fishing, hunting or just watching the wildlife around his homes. His other enjoyments were playing cards and of course his 5 o'clock toddy.
Bill will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Menji and his children: Sharon, Jacob and Maria; sister Arline (Schroeder) Dabill; Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces, Great Nephews, cousins and close friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents. sisters: Ruth (John) Freiburger, Muriel (Alvin) Holz, Marie Angell and Ila (Dean) Hanson; a brother Bobby Schroeder; a brother-in-law Dave Dabill and his former wife Denie (Midreain) Schroeder.
A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at 12 PM (Noon) on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, W6399 County Road O, Town of Ellington, with Rev. Ronald Ash officiating. There will be visitation prior to service directly at church from 9:00am to 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund for Cerebral Palsy, Inc. is being established, in behalf of William C. Schroeder Jr.
