On Tuesday nig ht last 3 Buchanan boys met on the south side and settled a long standi ng grudge in a knockdown. They were John Powers, Gleshine, and O'Connell. Powers whipped the two latter single handed in just two minutes and a half. It was no credit to our city to stand by and permit the fig ht to go on without interfering.

Appleton Evening Crescent, Appleton, WI, December 15, 1905; Edward GLASHE EN confessed judgment in Justice HEINEMANN's court yesterday aftern on to a fine of $25 and costs amounting to about $40 in the civil suit bro ught by the state growing out of the alleged selling of watered milk.The case has been dragging along since April 13, 1904, when GLASHEEN is al leged to have sold a quantity of milk to a creamery. The milk when test ed showed only 2.5 percent butter fat while three per cent is requir ed by law. GLASHEEN was arrested under the old law but the case was dismis sed recently after having been adjourned a number of times and the civil s uit started to collect the fine."

Van Nistleroy will conduct the service. The deceased Is survived by four brothers, Thomas, Jerry and Daniel of Kaukauna and William of Brampton, Mich. He was born February 2, 1867, in Hollandtown, Wisconsin. On October 9, 1929, he died at his home in VandenBroek, Wisconsin (Little Chute). He had a heart attack while having h is morning coffee with his brother. It did't say with which brother. He h ad 4 surviving brothers, John, Thomas, and Jerry living in the area and William of Brempton Michigan. There does not appear to be a wife. The artic le said he made his living as a farmer and a logger in the northwoods.

See Image John Glasheen Passes Away - Reside nt of the Island Succumbs After a Short Illness - Funeral Tomorrow. Yester day afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the family home on Pine street Island, Jo hn Glasheen succumbed to an attack of apoplexy after an illness of less th an a week's duration. Mr. Glasheen suffered a stroke of paralysis on Wedne sday and since that time had been in a critical condition. He was bo rn at Holland, Wis., June 10, 1861 and had been a resident of this city on ly a few years. He is survived by his wife and four sisters, Mrs. Willi am Dorsey of Center, Mrs. Campbell of Holland, Mrs. James Summers and Mr s. William Farrell of North Dakota.

Ross J. Glasheen Formerly of Appleton Age 72, passed away Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Brookside Nursing Home, Green Bay after a lin- geriag illness. He was born July 7, 1888 in Menasha, but lived in Appleton most of his life. Mr. Glasheen is survived by three sons: John and Joseph, Appleton; William J., Kimberly; 11 grand- children. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and St Mary Catholic church, 9 am Wednesday. Burial in St. Mary cemetery. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. The rosary will be prayed at 7 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Bearers will be Henry, Nolan Arnold Gritzmacher, W. W. Johnson, Lester Balliet, E. J. Robinson and H. L. Davis. Mrs. Gee was the daughter of John Glasheen of Appleton. She was born Jan. 28, 1901 in northern Michigan but spent most ot her life in this city. She is survived by her widower and one daughter, Jane, 2; her father; one brother and one sister, Ross and Miss Elizabeth Glasheen, both of Appleton. This is thoe third death in the Glasheen family within a year. Mrs. Gee's mother and brother died within that period.

See Image A victim, according to hospital authorities, of the fatal disease, leukemia, James Clement Summers for 15 years manager of Live Oak cemetery, died yesterday at the Veterans' hospital at Sawtelle.Mr. Summers leaves a motherless family of six young children, bereaved in the death of their mother, Mrs. Katherine Summers, Aug. 21, 1939. The Summers family resides at 490 Leroy ave., Arcadia. In addition to his business connections in Monrovia, Mr. Summers was well known here in fraternal circles and was a past exalted ruler of Monrovia Elks lodge and a member of Monrovia Council, Knights of Columbus. Mr. Summers was born Nov. 12, 1891 in North Dakota and had resided in Arcadia for 12 years and in California for 17 years. He is survived by four daughters, Kathaleen, Frances, Mary Lou and Patricia and two sons, Clement and John, all at home, and a brother. Rosary will be recited tomorrow evening at 9 o'clock at the chapel of Glasser and Johns in Arcadia and requiem mass held Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at the Church of the Holy Angels in Arcadia. Rev. Father Gerald O'Keeffe will officiate and internment will be made in Live Oak cemetery.

A reti red refrigeration engineer, Summers was a native of Lisbon, N.D., movi ng to California 35 years ago. Before moving to Ontario six years before h is death he was a resident of Pomona. He was a member of St. George Cathol ic church. In addition to his widow, Josephine, he is survived by two daug hters, Mrs. William J. Jones of Ontario and Mrs. J. F. Benedick of Fullert on; two sons, Douglas R. Summers of Ontario and William J. Summers of Upla nd; two sisters, Mrs. E.L. March of georgia and Mrs. T.F. He was born in Holland, Wis., on Sept 8, 189 1, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. William Campbell. He received his educati on in Holland town where he spent his early life. A veteran of World W ar I, he entered the U.S. Navy on June 24, 1918, and served aboard the U.S .S. Liberator and the U.S.S. President Grant. He was honorably discharg ed Oct 11, 1919. On Jube 24, 1930 he married Hazel Frandsen, and she survi ves him. He was employed at Anaconda American Brass Co. for 33 years, reti ring from active duties in 1957. He was a member of St. James church and t he Catholic Order of Foresters. In addition to his widow, he is surviv ed by three brothers and four sisters, Willard of Kaukauna; Alban, Ripo n; Howard, Kaukauna; Mrs. Charles (Winifred) Joyce, Mrs. Bert (Mary) VanAb el, Miss Sadie Campbell and Mrs. Thomas (Ruth) Campbell all of Green Ba y. From VanAbel Family History;Sadie was never married. After leaving the family farm, that was then r un by James Van Abel, she moved to Green Bay where she lived with her sist er Mary Helen Van Abel. She worked for many years as a nurse's aid at S t. Vincent's Hospital. Sadie was well known for the popcorn balls she ma de for the children of James and Thomas Van Abel. This became a Christm as ritual that was eagerly anticipated.

She taught elementary school in Outagamie, Brown a nd Kenosha counties. Ruth was married to Thomas J. Campbell on October 2 6, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1960, as did her son Thomas J. Jr. (T ejay). She also had five brothers and three sisters who proceded her in de ath; Maurice, Willard, Alban, Harold, Howard and Olive (Dolly) Milton a nd Winifred Joyce and Sadie Campbell.She is survived by her daughter Anne (Mrs. Richard) Melotte, Green Ba y; by her sister, Mrs. Mary VanAble, formerly of Green Bay, now residi ng in Kaukauna; three grandchildren, Marty Melotte, Greenville; Molly Melo tte, Greanleaf; Maggie Melotte, Bridgewater, Conn.; and two great grandson s, Paul and Neil Ledvina.Ruth was a member of Annunciation parish for 51 years. Obituary:
William J. "Bill" Glasheen, 89, Kimberly, died peacefully Saturday, March 27, 2010, at Appleton Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1920, in Appleton, to the late Ross and Regina (Homblette) Glasheen. Bill graduated in the first class of what is now Appleton West High School. He served in the 302nd Infantry 94th Division during World War II and received many awards, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct, World War II Victory, American and European Campaign medals. Bill was a 59-year member of the William Verhagen American Legion Post 60.
Bill married Wilma Derkes on June 6, 1942, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute. He retired from the Kimberly Paper Mill in 1982 after 42 years of employment.
Together, Bill and Wilma enjoyed square dancing for 25 years, with Bill as a caller for ten and Wilma planning dances for their three area clubs. Bill was an avid sturgeon spearer and decoy maker. They enjoyed 25 years of fishing and camping at Guth's Resort on the Wolf River.

Gerald Edward Glasheen, age 73, died peacefully on Monday, May 2, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton with his family at his side. Gerry was born on February 6, 1938, in Kaukauna, the son of the late Edward and Lucille (Wolf) Glasheen. Gerry was formerly employed for over forty years with Thilmany Paper Company. He was an avid Packers and Brewers fan who enjoyed reading mysteries, and spending time with his best friend, Sassy.

Eulogy written by son Daniel W Glasheen;
Growing up in Kaukauna, Dad's parents had on their bookshelf, a collection of the great classical authors. Probably 30 books in all. Growing up without the mind numbing distractions of today, Dad, in his readings traveled the world. He saw the depth of history, learned the art of language, witnessed the struggles people go thru. He learned the role of government and the art of politics. These lessons served him in later years as he went door to door on political campaigns. Developing his skills in the art of debate and compromise in his service as an alderman for the City of Kaukauna.
Working as a writer of newspapers, a News Director of radio stations, a broadcaster of current event talk shows, He learned how to use words to enlighten and explain. His strongest tools were a typewriter and an inquiring mind. He worked as a grade school teacher and mentor for high school students teaching the use of language and appreciation of literature.
Many times Dad told me, the writer who had the greatest impact on his life, was Rudyard Kipling. Kipling traveled the world; a soldier, a civil servant, a recorder of history. His writings highlighted the man who did the dirty work of the world.
Dad enlisted in the Air Force after high school. After surviving a few plane crashes, Dad decided that duty closer to the ground was more to his liking. As a Military Policeman he was sent to North Africa. At his duty station he served alongside the French Foreign Legion and was a witness to the revolt in Morocco. He returned to the states and in his duties saw the Atomic Bomb tests in the deserts. He was there for the fast cars and pick-up trucks of Texas in the 1950's.
He returned home to become a police officer for the City of Kaukauna. The friendships and experiences from those years still form the kindling of laughs and stories around the bar.
He continued his military service for over 20 years with the Army Reserve. As a tanker and drill sergeant he was respected and gave inspiration to the soldiers he served with.
In his retirement years, he never forgot where the Glasheen family came from. A bunch of poor Irishmen, struggling to make a living on the farms of Hollandtown. He researched the history of our family back to the hills of Ireland and learned the family has one common thread. We might not be the ones you want to marry your daughter, but you want us with you in a fight.
The picture I am always going to keep in my heart, is Dad, smiling, standing next to the street sign, of Glasheen Road in Cork, in the shadow of his great grandfather. With all of the people and experiences along the way, that finally brought him back home.

See Image Daniel R. Glasheen; Kaukauna Age 72, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at his home. He was born April 18, 1934, son of the late William and Helen (DeNell) Glasheen. On Jan. 18, 1969, he married Barbara Lambie in Appleton. Dan was a U.S. Air Force veteran and also retired from the Army Reserves after 20 years of service. Dan was a former reporter for the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, a former news director for WHBY Radio, served as alderman for the City of Kaukauna from 1982 to 1992 and was a veteran of the Kaukauna Police Department. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 41. Dan retired from Miller Electric after 20 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years: Barbara; his children: Dan (Jane), Kaukauna, Holly (Scott) Laird, Freedom, Chris (Laura) Phoenix, Arizona, William (Dawn), Kaukauna, Ryan, Minneapolis; his grandchildren: Amy, Aidan and Morgan, Shannon, Taylor and Denim; stepgrandchildren: Brian, Nick and Heidi. He is further survived by his wife's family, Andrew and Elaine Lambie, Combined Locks, Tom (Donna) Lambie, Little Chute, Robert (Kim) Lambie, Stockbridge, Todd (Sherry) Lambie, Appleton and David Lambie, Iraq, Mike (Deb) Zornow, several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Erin, and son, Tim. Dan's funeral service was at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna, with Fr. Martin Fox officiating. Complete military rites were conducted by American Legion Post 41 immediately following services at church. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his name.

Kavanaugh, William T.Born in Freedom, Wisconsin on September 1, 1919, Bill died on October 1 9, 2004, in Boca Raton, Florida, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s dise ase. Bill spent his professional life serving his country in various capac ities. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and served in the Europ ean Theatre in the Medical Service Corps as a Hospital Administrator. He c ontinued in that capacity after the war ended while working for the Vetera n’s Administration at Wood Memorial Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a nd later in his career at the Veteran’s hospital in Tuskeegee, Alabama. Af ter his active duty service, he remained in the Army Reserve, retiri ng as a Major. Bill relocated to Florida in 1972, and enjoyed his retireme nt years enjoying the warmth of Florida and traveling the world. He was pa rticularly fond of sitting in his 6th floor home and watching the big boa ts sail up and down the intercoastal waterway that was his backyard. He w as preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Eleanor, who passed aw ay in 1988.Bill was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by h is wife, Dr. Terry Carr Kavanaugh; and his sons, Michael (Susan) and Jose ph (Jeri); his daughter Margaret; and his three grandchildren: Brian, Tra cy and Allison. He remained close to both his family and Eleanor’s fami ly even though living in Florida. See Image Al J. Joyce, 83, San Diego, Calif., formerly of Green Bay, died Saturday, Sept 19, 1998. He was born June 18, 1915 to Charles and Winifred (Campb ell) Joyce in Wrightstown. He married Maureen Walton on Oct 17, 194 5. As a young man, he worked for Northern Paper Mill. Later, he worked as a heavy equipment operator, helping to build the Ellison Air Force B ase in Fairbanks, Alaska. He also worked on the atomic bomb project in the Mohobi Desert. In the 1950's he went into the insurance and securities business. He spent his retirement years in California. He is survived by his wife; his sons, Michael (Barb); Joe (Leslie); his daughter, Jeanna (Peder) and grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, infant daughter, and his brothers, Roland, JUnior and Leo, and his sister Mary Ann Harrison. There will be a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Church, Green Bay, burial will be at Oakley, Utah.

My father, Joseph Willard "Dee" died of a) hemorrhage, b) right pneumonectomy c) carcinoma right lung, according to his death certificate. My mother told me he had lung cancer and died as a result of the surgery.

On his service application, my father listed his name as Willard NMI
Campbell. His death certificate reads Willard Joseph Campbell. I
always understood it as Willard Joseph. I mention this because your
research refers to him as Joseph Willard.

Jean E., my father's first wife, was Jean Adams, according to his
service record. They were married before May 43 and had 1 child by
that time, according to his service record. On July 30, 43, he listed
Jean's address as 1270 N. 47th Street, Milwaukee.

His service record also says he attended Wauwatosa High School in
Milwaukee. Under his employment record, he listed Douglas Aircraft in
Santa Monica from 6/41 to 9/42. He gives no details. I found that
interesting given that Hank Marino opened his bowling alley in Santa
Monica in 1940. Douglas Aircraft was, indeed, in full swing during
that time in Santa Monica supporting the war effort

Some divorce dates for my dad "Dee":
Jean: 1947
Thekla (also spelled Teckla): She filed for divorce three times before it was finalized: 4/27/53 (reconciled 10/02/53), 5/01/55 (reconciled by December), and finally 1/07/59. The divorce was granted on 5/21/59 (my father didn't show up).
Mary Janice Varney: 4/08/64
My mother, Mary Janice Varney, remarried Roland Harry Haffner in 2/12/66 and in 1/06/68, both in Las Vegas. The first marriage wasn't legal as he was still married to another woman.
BTW, in the divorce papers, he is called Willard J. Campbell.

Here's something else I thought was interesting. I may have found another marriage for my dad.
I was doing a newspaper search and came across an article in the Waukesha Daily Freeman dated 9/08/49. It said that a woman named Pearl Campbell of Waukesha was granted an annulment from Willard Campbell of Milwaukee. It said he married her before having been divorced for a full year as required by law. Apparently he was divorced on 3/30/46 and married Pearl in July.
I got the divorce date from Jean from my mom's divorce petition. She had a specific date for his second divorce, but only a year for the first. It's possible she was guessing, and was off by a few months.
I don't know if this would have made six marriages, or if my mom was his fourth.

It was WWII. I have what's left of his service record. Much of it was destroyed by fire. He was in the regular army from 9/23/42 until his honorable discharge 6/29/43, when he was discharged to accept a commission in the Army. He went through pilot training. in Blytheville Ark, Greenwood, Miss., Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Maxwell field in Montgomery, Ala. He was married to Jean at the time and already had a child. I'm afraid it didn't end well. He was AWOL for 37 days and court martialed at Drew Field in Tampa Fla., 2/15/45 and sentence to three years hard labor at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

Thomas R. Van Abel, 82, Kaukauna, passed away on Friday morning, Nov. 25, 2011, at his residence. He was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Appleton, to the late Albert and Mary (Campbell) Van Abel. On April 26, 1958, he was united in marriage to Jacquelyn Jacques at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna.
Tom was an U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Europe. He was employed by Thilmany Paper for many years until his retirement. Tom was a long-time member of the Kaukauna Elks Club, a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Men's Choir at St. Francis Catholic Church in Hollandtown. He enjoyed golfing and spending the winter months with his wife, Jacque, in Florida, along with their many friends from the Hollandtown area.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jacquie; three children, Mark (Kimberly), San Diego; Amy (Bill) Sarles, Mequon; and Craig (Mary), Appleton; six grandchildren, Lauren Van Abel, Molly, Megan and Emily Sarles, Joshua and Nicholas Van Abel; and a brother, James (Marlene) Van Abel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary Van Abel.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at St. Katharine Drexel Parish @ ST. FRANCIS CHURCH, 433 County Rd. CE, Hollandtown with Fr.
