Arnold Hurkman was born in Wintelre, Holland, on May 5, 1828. After his fa ther and mother died, and also his brother, Wilbertus, who was abo ut to be ordained a priest, he decided to go to America. He left his siste r, Mary, in a convent to finish her education. It was his intention to ret urn to Holland for his sister within two years if he liked America and dec ided to make his home here. He left Amsterdam to sail for America in 185 1. He had always cherished a great ambition to become a mighty hunter a nd on first arriving in this country, displayed what his conception of t he New World had been by marching down Broadway with his shotgun on his sh oulder looking for "B'ar."He first settled in Minnesota but remained only a short time. On hearing t hat hunting in Wisconsin was very good, he decided to locate in Outagam ie County. Here he purchased a small tract of land located on the south si de of the Fox River about one half mile from Kaukauna. A log cabin was bui lt and when he wasn't hunting, he raised potatoes and pork which he trad ed with the Indians for skins.In 1855, he formed a partnership with a friend, Henry Hammen. Together th ey purchased 200 acres of land north of Kaukauna on what is known as Ro se Hill. Later, in dividing the property, Mr. Hurkman gave Mr. Hannen (No te the different spelling in the name. Correct spelling is unknown.) a dou ble barrel shotgun for 20 acres of his share.After being in this country about two years, Mr. Hurkman returned to Holla nd to keep his word to his sister. On reaching Holland, he learned she w as married and was content to remain in Holland. After settling his father 's estate, selling his share for almost nothing, he returned to America.When returning to America the second time, several of his friends in Holla nd came with him. Those unable to pay their passage agreed with Mr. Hurkm an to work for him in America in exchange for their passage. On landi ng in this country, the party made it west by train. A man passing as t he conductor asked one of the men in the party to see his ticket and, wh en it was presented, he pocketed it and left. This caused some consternati on, but the ticketless man hid under a seat each time the conductor came t hrough and so the difficulty was solved.Hurkman married Adriana Verstegen, daughter of his friend and neighbor, Ar nold Verstegen. They were married on February 16, 1862. Adriana became i ll with an infection of the liver only two weeks after her wedding and gr ew worse rapidly. She died on May 24, 1862.Hurkman married Hendrina Berendsen in September 1863. They had six childre n. In 1872 he bought I80 acres just east of the original purchase and erec ted a log cabin in which the hired help lived. Later he sold all but 120 a cres which became his farm home. In May of 1878 he moved his family to th is farm. (They walked across the fields from one farm to the other.) Th ey lived in the log house until a new home was erected within a year, a nd the log house was again used by the hired help.The 120 acres of land which now became their home was part of an origin al purchase in 1793 by Dominic Ducharme from Indian Chief Wabisipine (Eagl e) and Chief Tobacnoir for which was given two barrels of rum. Later the s on of Chief Wabisipine (Little Eagle) made claim to the property which w as satisfied with two additional gallons of rum by Ducharme.

Biography:
ARNOLD HURKMAN, one of the pioneers of Outagamie county, Wisconsin, who for many years was well known as a leading agriculturist and large land owner of Vandenbroek township, was a native of Holland, and came to the United States when a lad of sixteen years. He had always cherished a great ambition to become a mighty hunter and on first arriving in this country displayed what his conception of the New World had been by marching down Broadway, New York, with his shot-gun on his shoulder, looking for "b'ar." He soon came West, settling in Minnesota, but after a short time heard that the hunting was good in Wisconsin and subsequently came to Outagamie county, locating on the south side of the Fox River, one-half mile from the city of Kaukauna, where he bought a small tract of land, built a little log cabin and began raising potatoes and pork, which he traded to the Indians for skins. After one year, in partnership with a friend, Henry Hammond, he bought 200 acres of land north of Kaukauna, and in dividing the property, Mr. Hurkman gave Hammond a double-barrelled shotgun for twenty acres of his share. In a few years he bought 180 acres more, just east of the original purchase, and in 1872 he erected a log house which still stands, and in which his hired help lived. Eventually, he sold off all of his land but 120 acres which became his home farm, and there he continued to reside until his death, April 17, 1886, when he was fifty-eight years of age. In 1858 he was married to Jane Verstegen of Little Chute, who died one year later, and in 1861 Mr. Hurkman was married to Hedrina Berendsen, who came from Holland with her parents, Henry and Katherina Berendsen, locating in Freedom township. To this union there were born six children: Mrs. Annie Deering; Mrs. Mary Gloudemans; Mrs. Nellie Vandenberg; John B., born July 11, 1872; Henry L., born July 8, 1874; and Bernard W., born October 16, 1877. Mrs. Hurkman died December 27, 1910, aged seventy-seven years, in the faith of the Holy Cross Catholic Church of Kaukauna, of which her husband had also been a member. The three Hurkman brothers were educated in the Parochial school of the Holy Cross Church, and as lads they worked on their father's farm. In 1893 John Hurkman went to Appleton, where he lived for two years, and then, with his brother-in-law, G. Deering, he rented and operated the home farm for four years. The younger brothers, John B., Henry L. and Bernard W., then rented the home place and operated it for a year, and in 1900 the three boys bought the home place, which they have since operated as a dairy farm. They sell and deliver milk to the city of Kaukauna, having the largest dairy business there. They have made numerous improvements to the home place, including the erection of a new $5,000 dairy barn, and they have also added to the acreage of the property, buying 163 acres to the east in 1901, and in 1911 purchased 74 acres to the east of that. The production of the farm has also been greatly increased, and nearly all of the product is fed to the animals. The property covers lots Nos. 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20, in the south one-half of Private Claim No. 35, and 163 acres in the west one-half of the same claim. The brothers are known as enterprising and progressive business men, and have the esteem of their fellow townsmen as public-spirited citizens. John and Bernard are unmarried, but Henry married Miss Annie Segglink, daughter of George Segglink, of Kaukauna, a retired farmer, and has one child, Arnold George, born May 10, 1910. The brothers are all members of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Henry L. Hurkman, 66, route 1, Kaukauna, died early this morning at his home. He was born in the town of Vandenbroek July 8, 1874. Surviving are the widower: a daughter, Mrs. Carrol Galloway, Green Bay: three sons; Arnold, Clarence, John, route 1. Kaukauna; a brother, Bernard, route 1, Kaukauna; three sisters, Mrs. Gregor Deering, Kaukauna; Mrs. Arnold Gloudemans, Mrs. Albert Vandenberg Little Chute, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 o'clock Friday morning at Holy Cross church, Kaukauna. by the Rev. L. F. Woelfel, the cortege forming at 8:45 at Fargo Funeral home, Kaukauna. The body may be viewed after 9 o'clock Thursday morning at the funeral home where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 Thursday evening.

Deering, Joseph C. KaukaunaAge 97, died on Saturday evening, November 30, 2002 at Appleton Medical Ce nter. He was born on March 5, 1905 in Kaukauna the son of the late Greg or and Anna (Hurkman) Deering. On May 20, 1929 he married Mary Bonge rs in Little Chute. She passed away on October 24, 1998. He owned and oper ated a dairy farm most of his life in the Kaukauna area, and had been empl oyed at various jobs after he quit farming. Joe was recognized for 75 yea rs of membership with the Catholic Order of Foresters, and was a lifeti me member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna.He is survived by his daughter Eileen Nackers of Wrightstown, his son Jer ry (Mary Kay) Deering of Little Chute, ten grandchildren, nineteen great-g randchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in dea th by his wife Mary, two brothers, four sisters, a son-in-law Albert Nacke rs, and a daughter-in-law Donna Deering.A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at 11: 00 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna with the Rev. Jack Mullark ey officiating. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemeter y. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until the ti me of the service. Irene McDonald, 102, Sedona, and born in Little Chute, Wis., on April 10, 1909, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Oshkosh, Wis., with an associate degree from the Milwaukee Children's Hospital.
Much of her career was spent in United Verde Hospital in Jerome, Ariz., and as a school nurse, which she loved both in the Flagstaff Elementary Schools and in the Northern Arizona University Health Department.
She was a member of the NAU Retirees, the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup and P.E.O. Chapter C in Gallup. Irene enjoyed writing poetry, reading, sewing, gardening, and walking as a physical activity. She will be remembered for her positive and friendly attitude.
Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis J. McDonald.
She is survived by daughters, Janet Kauzlaric and Martha (John) Mackler; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services are pending.

Joe was born in Grand Chute on Augu st 2, 1911, son of the late Arnold and Mary (Hurkman) Gloudemans. For so me time he lived in De Pere, and had been employed by Nicolet Papers for n early thirty years, until his retirement. During World War II, Joe serv ed as a faithful member of the United States Army.He is survived by a sister, Irene McDonald, who resides in Farmington, N ew Mexico. Elva D. Dorn, age 107, of Appleton, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Rennes Health Care Center. The funeral liturgy for Elva will be held at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at ST. APPLETON - The St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System received a $2.5 million gift from the estate of the late Elva Dorn, the largest bequest the system has ever received school leaders said Wednesday.
Dorn and her husband, Herb, were lifelong members of St. Joseph Parish. They had no children, but supported Catholic education in the Fox Cities by establishing the Herbert and Elva Dorn Scholarship Fund in 1992. Elva died in 2014 at the age of 107.
In a statement, system President Deacon Ray DuBois said he is grateful Elva thought of them once again.
"We are truly blessed by the generosity of Mrs. Dorn. Her foresight and faith will benefit our current students and future generations," DuBois said.
A total of $2 million of the gift will go to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Foundation, with the remaining $500,000 designated to fund academics, fine arts, a prayer garden and administrative costs of the remodeling project at Xavier High School.
A portion of the money will support the scholarship fund the Dorns established, the Xavier Catholic Schools Foundation Fund and create two new funds. The Herbert and Elva Dorn K-8 Memorial Scholarship Fund will support scholarships for elementary and middle school students. The Herbert and Elva Dorn K-12 Support Fund will cover long-term needs across the system.

Agnes Callaway, 88, Green Bay, died peacefully Monday, Oct. 27, 200 3, at a local nursing home. She was born June 12, 1915, in Kaukauna, to t he late Henry and Anna (Seggelink) Hurkman. Agnes attended St. Mary's Scho ol of Nursing and graduated as an R.N. in 1936. On April 28, 1938, Agnes w as united in marriage to Millard Callaway. Together they enjoyed more th an 30 years of marriage until Millard's death in 1960. In her spare time A gnes loved to garden, read, do crossword puzzles and spend time with her f amily. Some of her greatest joys came was when she was able to help peop le through her nursing skills.
Survivors include three children and their spouses, James Callaway, Thom as and Barbara Callaway, Susan and Michael Hudak, all of Green Bay; five g randchildren and their spouses, Kim and Erik Gulbrandson, Milwaukee; Charl es and Dawn Callaway, Jenna Hudak, Kellie Hudak, Kevin Hudak, all of Gre en Bay; a niece, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Hurkman, John J., Menominee, M I, Formerly of KaukaunaAge 83, died nine days shy of his 84th birthday on March 1, 2003 at Auro ra Bay Care Medical Center after a long illness. He was born to the late H enry and Anna ( Seggelink) Hurkman in Kaukauna on March 10, 1919. John mar ried the former Violet Busse on December 29, 1943, in Green Bay. She prece ded John in death in July, 1976. John and his brother, Arnold, carri ed on the family farm established in the 1800’s, located just north of Kau kauna by Highways 55 and 41. Arnold preceded John in death in 1975. John r etired from the farm in 1978 and established permanent residence in Menomi nee, MI in 1993. John truly enjoyed his time and friends in Michigan. Ridi ng his four-wheeler in his woods was a favorite past time along with findi ng treasures on the beach near his main residence on the bay. Visits fr om Katelin and Elisabeth were always a very happy time for “Grandpa.”Together John and Violet had three children: Ronald Hurkman of Omaha, Nebr aska; Richard (Jayne) Hurkman of Angels Camp, California; and Randi (Phili ppe) Van Pelt of Fremont. Vanevenhoven, Eloy "Red" 1004 Joyce Street, Kaukauna, Red Vanevenhoven, age 94, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. Red was born October 25, 1912, to the late Charles and Rose (Gloudeman) Vanevenhoven. He married the former Joan Murphy on June 6, 1938, in Gays Mills, Wisconsin. Joan preceded him in death on January 3, 2000. Red and Joan worked together for sixty-two years, many of them at the Hub, which is now The Prime Steer. Red was a longtime member of Holy Cross Parish.
Red is survived by his children: Nancy (Milton) Marasch of Boulder, Colorado; Jan (Bob) Thomas of Green Bay; Mary (Chip) Lamers of Kaukauna; and Mike (Meg O'Brien) Vanevenhoven of Menasha; seventeen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Dorothy Ann Eslien, 94, Kaukauna, Wisconsin, formerly of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, passed away on September 17, 2009, in Appleton, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Rose Vanevenhoven of Kaukauna. Dorothy and Richard Eslien were married on February 11, 1939. She was a registered nurse and obtained her degree from St. Mary's Nursing School in Green Bay. She worked for 24 years at Winnebago State Hospital in Oshkosh.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church, Kaukauna, and St. Josephat Catholic Church in Oshkosh.
Survivors include two sons: Jack (Karen) Eslien of Two Rivers and Greg (Simone) Eslien of Waukesha; three daughters: Kathy (Bob) Zielinski of Lakewood, Colorado; Mary Derus of Kaukauna; and Margaret Anderson of Campbell, California; and seven grandchildren: Jill and Heather Eslien, Jennifer (Jeff) Nowak; Steven and Greg (Anjali) Zielinski and Nick and Leah Derus.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Richard and son Robert.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on September 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church in Kaukauna.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Father Carr's Place 2B, a large facility that provides food and shelter for the homeless.

Roy J. Deering, formerly of White Lake, Wisconsin, died at 2:09 PM on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Brewster Village in Appleton. He died surrounded by his family, following a short, yet valiant fight against cancer. Roy was born May 23, 1926 in Kaukauna, son of the late Arnold and Helen (Vandenberg) Deering, and graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1943. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1946, and was stationed at North Island Naval Base in San Diego. He was married to Joyce M. Beusch on June 9, 1951. Roy worked as a long-haul semi driver for Hennes Trucking, specializing in oversized loads. He retired in 1988. Roy and Joyce purchased their retirement dream home on Sawyer Lake in Langlade County in 1976, and spent thirty-four years in the Wisconsin northwoods.
He is survived by four children: Sue (Jo Randall) Deering of Portland, Oregon; Mary Green of Appleton; Joe Deering of McHenry, Illinois; and Jerry (Lori) Deering of Appleton; two sisters: Rosemary Hester of Battle Ground, Washington and Ann Bowers of Wrightstown; two brothers: John (Nancy) Deering of San Luis Obispo, California and Peter Deering of Green Valley, Arizona; five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce; his parents; and a brother Erle Deering.
A memorial service for Roy will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 19, 2015 at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri County Chapel, with Rev. April Kain-Breese officiating. Ann K. (Deering) Bowers, age 83, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2018 in Tucson, Arizona. Ann was born on October 17, 1934, the daughter of the late Arnold and Helen Deering. On October 17, 1955 Ann married the love of her life, Lawrence P. Bowers. They were married for 26 years before Larry preceded her in death on November 12, 1981. Ann and Larry together ran a dairy farm and built their family.
Ann enjoyed watching the Packers play football, preferably when they won. She enjoyed her time at the cottage, traveling, working in her flower garden, reading, spending time with friends and family. She was an active member of the Town of Kaukauna Historical Society.
Survivors include her children: Peter (Barb) Bowers and their children, Jamie (Michelle) Bowers, Jason (Amber) Bowers, Jeremy (Kelly) Bowers, and Jolene (David) Loritz; Arnold (Sheryl) Bowers and their children Michelle (Nathan) Gonnering, Christine Bowers, Lawrence Bowers, and Adam Bowers; Helen Schmude (special friend Mark Schlies) and her children Kevin Bowers and Anthony Bowers; Jean Hill and her children Kayla Hill and Tori Hill. She is also survived by brothers Peter Deering and John (Nancy) Deering; a sister Rosemary Hester; and ten great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

De Pere - Jerry (Gerald A.) Hermsen Born July 21, 1915 in Little Chute, Wisconsin to the late George and Joanna (Gloudeman) Hermsen, Jerry married Agnes L. Sensenbrenner at St. Patrick's Parish Church in Menasha on July 7, 1941.
In 1981 Jerry retired from American Can Company (formerly Menasha Products Company and later Marathon Corporation) after 43 years in marketing and sales. His forté was cheese packaging. He took a short marketing course from Harvard University which led to his becoming the National Market Manager in Performance Packaging. As such he made frequent trips to destinations in Japan, Mexico, Germany, Holland, England, Ireland, Finland, France, Italy and Israel as well as throughout the United States. In retirement he became a consultant to James River Corporation helping to introduce a cellulose product for the food industry.
As a member of the Marathon Corporation Quarter Century Club, he continued to enjoy meeting with old friends and new acquaintances at the group's annual meetings as well as other retired friends who met monthly in Menasha for lunch. Jerry was also a member of the Green Bay Retired Men's Club and thoroughly enjoyed attending weekly meetings of this group. In addition, Jerry delighted in attending weekly Friday luncheons with other local retired individuals.
During World War II he spent three years with the United States Army Air Corp after studying at Louisiana State University, and performed duty in the China-Burma-India Theatre while assigned to the 33rd Fighter Group (a.k.a "The Flying Tigers") stationed in India. While there he was awarded two bronze battle stars for his participation in the Chittagong, India and Myitkyina, Burma campaigns against the Japanese invaders.
Jerry was a longtime member and usher serving at St. Francis Xavier Congregation in DePere. While there he was a Minister of Hospitality for many years. He held a 50 year membership certificate to the Catholic Order of Foresters, Roster 450, Little Chute Wisconsin. He was also a member of the Elks while living in Menasha. After retirement he became a volunteer for the Green Bay "Meals on Wheels" program.
Jerry enjoyed working in his yard, fishing, and was an ardent Packer fan, seldom missing a home game during over 50 years as a season ticket holder.
He is survived by three children: Thomas (Judie) Hermsen, Barrington, IL.; Barbara (John) Lamb, Wauwatosa, WI.; and Tria (Jeff) Jensen of Pinellas Park, FL.; four grandchildren: Mark (Joy) Hermsen, Jessica (Mike) Vahey, Sara (Fran) Hurtado, and Kaitlin Lamb; five great-grandchildren: Annelise and Zöe Hermsen, Anderson and Avery Vahey; and Amaia Hurtado, sisters: Lorraine Schwinn of Wayzata, MN., Joan Groh of Milwaukee, Rosalie Miller of St. Louis Park, MN., Imelda Kandler of Little Chute, WI., Marge Miller of Appleton, WI., plus brothers: Bernard (Barbara) Hermsen of Glenview, IL., and Paul (Lois) Hermsen of Kaukauna, WI.; and sister-in-law Barbara Cashman of Phoenix, AZ., in addition to numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Agnes L. Dorothy M. Lamers, Little Chute, age 90, died Thursday June 30, 2011 at Appleton Retirement Community. She was born August 23, 1920 in Little Chute to the late George F. and Celia (Gloudemans) Look. Dorothy married Thomas C. Lamers on July 23, 1946 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Little Chute. She volunteered at Parkside Care Center and Fr. Carr's "Place 2 B" for many years. She was also involved in many volunteer activities for St. John's Church and School. Dorothy was a member of the St. Elizabeth Society at St. John's where she was a lifelong member. She enjoyed the Brewers, Packers, and bowling. Her greatest joy was her family. Dorothy cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She really enjoyed watching all of their games and other school activities. She treasured time spent with everyone at all of the family gatherings, especially during their annual family vacation at Roberts Lake. Her family always looked forward to her sugar cookies and Chex mix.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Louann (Wayne) Vande Hey, Kaukauna; Dan (Kathy), Little Chute; Larry (Jolene), Appleton; Ken (Nancy), Little Chute; Joe (Lisa), Harrison; and Pat (Jackie), Grapevine, TX; grandchildren: Jenni Vande Hey, Greg (Barb) Vande Hey, Julie (Joe) Trzebiatowski, Brian (Susan) Lamers, Laurie (Kevin) Maas, Clint, Karrie, Marty, Sarah, Ben, Mallory, Katherine, Nicholas (Destani), Lucilia, Clare and Anna Lamers; great grandchildren: Lizzie, Alyssa and Breten Vande Hey, Morgan and Ryan Trzebiatowski, Nolan and Nathan Lamers, Owen, Isaac and Aiden Maas; sister and brother: Lucille Reynebeau and Bob Look; and sisters-in-law: Margaret Look and Doris Vanden Heuvel. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Thomas; father and mother-in-law Martin and Janet Lamers; brother Ray Look; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Joe Reynebeau, Mary Look, Dick Vanden Heuvel, Jack (Kate), Mark (Audrey), and Bob (Margaret) Lamers.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday July 5, 2011 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St., Little Chute) beginning at 2:00 p.m. until time of Mass at 5:00 p.m. The Rev. Msgr. John "Jack" Nackers, age 50, of Appleton, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 25, 2007. He was born March 30, 1957, to Albert "Boots" and Eileen (Deering) Nackers of Wrightstown. As a loving father and grandfather he will be sadly missed by Tony and Cara Nackers of Kimberly, Kyle Nackers of Kaukauna, Kurt Nackers of Seymour, Cassie Nackers of Kaukauna and her fiance Matt Sherman; a granddaughter Taylor; a sister, Nancy and Paul Vande Hei of Wrightstown; brothers: Jim and Deb Nackers of De Pere, Paul Nackers and Marcia of Pulaski; nieces and nephews: Tammy and Chad Weiss of De Pere, Amy and Dean Vande Hey of Wrightstown, Shaun Wall of Greenleaf, Katie Vande Hei of Wrightstown; and special friend Deb Zernicke of Bonduel. Obituary:
Daniel A. Bongers, Little Chute, age 60, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2012, surrounded by his family.
Dan was the oldest child of James "Jim" and Catherine "Kate" (Feldkamp) Bongers, born on June 25, 1952, in Appleton. He married Julie Schmidt on April 29, 1977, at St. Aloysius Parish in Kaukauna. He was a proud graduate of St. John High School (class of 1970) and Fox Valley Technical College. Dan retired from U.S. Oil Co., Inc. after 38 years, where he was President of U.S. Tire and Exhaust for 15 years.
Dan was an all-around great guy. He was a very creative, talented and patient man who could often be found tinkering in the garage, whether it was building, repairing, inventing, or teaching someone else a new skill. Extremely generous with his time and talents, Dan always looked for ways to help other people. He was a project manager for Rebuilding Together Fox Valley's Project Day for several years. The ultimate DIY handyman, he would fix anything for anyone, and he went out of his way to take care of others.
Dan made family and friends a priority. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with loved ones at the cottage on Lake Poygan. A member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, he had a strong faith, attending Mass every Sunday, and in recent years on Tuesdays in support of Terry Huiting. Together, Dan and Julie enjoyed many vacations with friends and family. He loved a good practical joke and had a great sense of humor. He was a caring son, thoughtful brother, loving husband, wonderful father, incredible papa and great friend.
Dan is survived by his wife of 35 years, Julie; children: Jacquelyn (Michael) Sharkey, Appleton; Michael Bongers, Menomonee Falls; and Gregory (Laurie) Bongers, Milwaukee; grandchildren: Ethan and Grace Sharkey; parents: Jim and Kate Bongers; sisters: Bonnie (Kevin) Bell and Mary Jo (Dave) Hermsen; father-in-law: Raymond (LaVerne) Schmidt; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Jane Kaufman, Albert (Shirley) Schmidt and Wallie (Amy) Schmidt. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Dan was preceded in death by Julie's mother, Carol "Tweet" (Zornow) Schmidt; and brother-in-law, Joe Kaufman.

Obituary:
Heather M. Schwartzbauer, 28, Kimberly, passed away at home, surrounded by her family and friends, on Friday, May 7, 2010, after a valiant battle with Neuroendocrine Cancer. She was born in Appleton on Feb. 4, 1982, the daughter of Tom and Sue (Martin) Harke. On Jan. 26, 2008, she married her beloved husband in Appleton, Nicholas Schwartzbauer. Heather was a customer service manager for Wolfmark. She was very fond of the outdoors including: spending time at her parent's cabin on Boulder Lake, swimming, jet-skiing, time on the pontoon boat, four wheeling, playing volleyball and basketball, having camp fires and roasting hotdogs and marshmallows, snowboarding, traveling and going on cruises. Heather will be fondly remembered for her baking and cooking, her love of her husband, snuggling with and reading to her daughter, Ava (her Snuggle Bunny), and her special dog, Jade.
Heather is survived by her husband, Nick, of Kimberly; beloved daughter Ava; parents: Tom and Sue Harke of Freedom; brothers: Jason Harke of Greenville and Tommy (fiancee, Nikki Wyngaard) Harke of Greenville; sister, Holly (special friend, Andy Van Zeeland) Harke of Freedom; grandmothers: Gertrude Martin of Kimberly, Marian Brazier of Appleton, and Mary Schwartzbauer of New London; father and mother-in-law, Dave and Sue Schwartzbauer of Neenah; brothers and sisters-in-law: Mike (Sue) Schwartzbauer of Larson, Kris (Julie) Schwartzbauer of Menasha and Ann (Jeff) Herman of Greenville; and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers; Lyle Harke and Philip Martin.
The funeral liturgy will be at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH, Kimberly Campus, 600 E. Kimberly Ave., Kimberly, with Fr. Ken Frozena officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass.
The family extends a special thank you to Affinity Hospice team, especially Jackie and Jen, the doctors and nurses at UW Hospital in Madison, and the staff at Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, for their compassionate and wonderful care.
