Death of Judge Colins The reported death of Judge Alexander L. Collins at his home at Neenah removes one of the best known pioneer attorneys and early politicians in this State. In fact it is stated he was the only surviving landmark of the law- yers who practiced in this territory between the years of 1836 and 1848 when Wisconsin was admitted to the union as a state. At the time of his death Judge Collins was in his 91st year and the history of his life is closely identified with many of the stirring incidents connected with the early history of the state. He was a native of Whitesboro. N. Y, afterwards remov- ing to Cleveland. O.,*(0HIO) where he finished his legal education at the age of twenty- three, and locating at Madison in this state in 1842 where he commenced the practice of his profession, being connected with the law firm of Collins. Smith and Tappen, which was changed in 1853 to Collins, Smith & Keyes, the late Oeorge B. Smith and E. W. Keyes being his partners. In 1848 he was nominated for governor, by the first Whig convention of the new state, but was defeated by Nelson Dewey. Democrat. Later he was a candidate with Edward V. Whiton for the position of United States senator, but both were beaten by Governor Dodge and I. P. Walker. In 1862 Mr. Collins was ohosen as a delegate to the national Whig convention in Baltimore which nominated Winfield Scott for the presidency, and in 1864 he was elected as judge of the ninth judicial circuit, serving in that capacity for four years, traversing the district included in his circuit on horseback and by buggy, as that was before the era of railroads in this state. A few, years later he located in Appleton where he resumed the practice of law, but for a number of years he has wholly given up his practice, and has mainly resided with his son Alexander, at Neenah, and his son-in-law, Samuel McCord at Milwaukee. Up to a few years ago he enjoyed unusually good health for a man of his age, but for several years past he has been falling and for a period of six months he has been confined to bis bed. His death was due to old age and a general breaking down of his health. Judge Collins was considered one of the most able lawyers among the distinguished galaxy of early territorial attorneys, and he is the last one of this class to be removed by death. Ever courteous and affable, he was a man of fine presence who made a most successful advocate before the bar. He was a brother-in-law of the late Governor James Duane Doty add is survived by a family of six children, Mrs. Samuel McCord, Milwaukee: Mrs. Charlotte A. Ilsey. Milwaukee; Mrs. Thomas H. Brooks, Seattle, Wash.; Alexander W. Collins, Neenah, Wls.; and Charles O., and Edward B. Collins of Chicago. His wife died a number of years ago. Judge Collins was very fond of recall- ing the incidents of the early history of this state, and his excellent memory in regard to these matters made him an exceedingly interesting conversationist. He was well known in this city where be was frequently called on business during his active career. His death is a reminder of the common and inevitable end toward which we all are trending.
