    Obituary:
Donald C. (Sam) Patrikus, 70, of Black Creek, passed away peacefully in his home on June 3, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 24, 1940, son of the late Joseph and Selma Patrikus in Clintonville, WI. Don graduated from Clintonville High School in 1958. He was a professional firefighter/paramedic for the city of Appleton and retired in 1996 after 28 years of service. The Fire Department started the annual Sam Drucker Golf Outing in Don's honor. Prior to becoming a firefighter, Don was employed at Kimberly Clark, and the American Can Company. While he was a firefighter he also worked part-time at Valweld Inc., Appleton Neon Sign Company, and the Appleton Community Blood Center. In addition, he had a very successful firewood business for the past 35 years.
Don, or "Sam" as he was fondly called, was a hard working, honest person with a tough exterior and a big heart. He was held in great affection by all who knew him. He enjoyed bowling, playing poker, and spending time with his grandchildren. He took extreme pride in everything he did. Throughout his life he always did the best he could no matter how large or small the task. The same was true of the past few months of his life; he knew he did everything in his power to fight the cancer, but ultimately lost the battle. Don was a devoted husband and took care of his family with strength and love. As a father, he was sought after for advice because he always knew the answer. He instilled a hard work ethic into his children. As a friend, he was admired for his dry sense of humor and his ability to persevere through anything that came his way.
He will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 49 years, Kathryn; two daughters, Linda Skrip (Steve) of Chesapeake, VA, and Ann Fischer (Curtis) of Greenville, WI; two sons, Paul Patrikus (Beate) of Powhattan, VA, and Robert Patrikus of Black Creek; four grandchildren, Stephen Skrip Jr., Quentin Patrikus, Christopher Skrip, and Lauren Fischer; three siblings, Florence Fenske of Oshkosh, Roger Patrikus of Clintonville, and Jerry Patrikus of Shawano; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Rueben.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at St. Edward Catholic Church, N2926 State Road 47, Appleton, with Fr. Mark Vander Steeg presiding. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010, at Valley Funeral Home, and will continue on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the hour of Mass at the church.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciation to Dr. Thirunavu and the staff at Affinity Oncology; the Affinity Hospice staff, especially Crystal and Gina; and the Home Instead staff for the wonderful care and compassion they provided to Don. Last but not least, the family extends their gratitude and love to Curtis Fischer and Scott Rehrauer for their never ending selflessness to help Don during his illness. Don considered Curtis his third son and Scott his "go to guy."
