    Obituary:
Jerome Janssen (Jerry) passed to his heavenly reward on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, after a brief illness. He was a patient at Mercy Hospital University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Born on May 5, 1928, in Appleton, Wis., the second of six children born to Henry Janssen and Rose Obarski Janssen.
After graduation from 8th grade at St. Therese School, he entered the Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary in Worthington, Ohio. Upon returning to Wisconsin, he completed his undergraduate degree at St. Norbert College, De Pere.
Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as a 2nd Lieutenant. Returning to civilian life, Jerry earned his MA degree and pursued a doctorate degree in history from UW-Madison. He was employed as a professor of history with the UW-Extension system at various locations: Green Bay, Marinette and Menasha.
Jerry accepted a position in the history department at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Penn., as a professor of history. After 40 years, he retired from Duquesne, but continued to hold an interest in his field of study.
Jerry was a kind gentle soul, who always wanted to help those less fortunate. He made regular trips to Wisconsin during the summer and at Christmas time, driving all night after midnight Mass, with his sister to the family Christmas party in Wisconsin. He always had a dog or two as pets and walked them in the woods along the trolley tracks near his home. Pittsburgh was his home, where he put down roots, sang in the St. Basil Choir and regularly attended the Pittsburgh symphony.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Henry Janssen; brother, Rev. Orville Janssen; brothers-in-law, Glenn Moder (Novella Janssen); Dr. Guy T. Barry (Therese Janssen). Jerry is survived by sisters, Therese and Novella, brothers, David Janssen (Mary); Thomas Janssen (Diana); and 13 nieces and nephews.
A funeral service is planned for Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W Pine St., Appleton, Wis. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., followed with a Mass at 11 a.m.
