Obituary:
Evelyn J. Heesacker, 92, a former resident of Forest Grove, late of Tualatin, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 3, 2003, at the Legacy Garden of Meridian Park Assisted Living Center in Tualatin.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 1660 Elm St., in Forest Grove. Reverend Donald Durand, retired, will be the celebrant. Burial Rites and Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Visitation Cemetery in Verboort.
Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the mass, to be held in the Parish Center at the church.
Mrs. Heesacker was born Oct. 7, 1910, in Eureka, Calif., the daughter of Joseph F. and Marie C. (Aicher) McKnight, but within months moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where the family had lived for generations. She was raised in Berkeley, Calif., graduating from Berkeley High School in January1927 and then attending secretarial school.
After working for a variety of employers during the Great Depression, Evelyn was employed for many years at the Bank of America before attaining her ideal job at the University of California at Berkeley as Departmental Secretary for the Department of Biochemistry.
In 1947, she met and married Robert Edwin Heesacker, who had recently been transferred from Portland, Ore. She then "retired" from office work to become a full-time homemaker.
Robert and Evelyn made their home in San Francisco, later moving to Croton-on-Hudson, New York. They later returned to San Francisco for a time before returning to New York, settling in the Hastings-on-Hudson community. Together they had two daughters, Claire-Marie (born in San Francisco) and Kerry-Ann (born in White Plains, New York).
Mr. Heesacker was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on Dec. 10, 1969, after celebrating over 22 years of marriage.
Following her husband's death, Evelyn returned to California, where she lived the life of an active volunteer in San Francisco, Berkeley and Marin County. She was especially proud of her years as a volunteer at the Berkeley Book Guild, a Catholic bookstore. She also began to travel, stating that her goal was to visit every country where she had ancestors. She succeeded in visiting every nation in Western Europe, as well as Greece, Turkey and Egypt for the roots of Western civilization!
In 1997, Evelyn moved to Oregon, settling in the Forest Grove community, to be closer to her surviving daughter, Claire-Marie. Her daughter, Kerry Ann had died in 1998. In August of 2002, Evelyn moved to the Legacy Garden of Meridian Park Assisted Living Center in Tualatin, where her final months were lived quietly surrounded by pictures of family and souvenirs of her many travels.
She is survived by her daughter, Claire-Marie Heesacker Kahn of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren, Joshua M. Berta of Sacramento, Calif.; Kristine M. Berta of South San Franisco; and David B.H. Kahn of Portland, Ore.; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Berta and Ariana Mia Berta both of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Providence St. Vincent Hospice, 9205 SW Barnes Road, Portland, Ore., 97225, or to the Immaculate Heart Monastery of Poor Clares, 28210 Natoma Road, Los Altos Hills, Calif., 94022, in her memory.
