Biography:
JOHN LEPPLA, the well known merchant of Dale, Outagamie county, was bo rn in Hollbernerhof, Rhenish Bavaria, Germany. The old Leppla family origi nally from France, being numbered among the Huguenots, who were driven o ut of that fair country in the darkest days of religious persecution. Aft er locating in their new home in Germany, they became in time a representa tive family in that section. They were farmers bu occupation, and landhold ers and freeholders, the community in which they had settled being giv en to agricultural pursuits. Peter Leppla, grandfather of John, reared a l arge family of children, all of whom married, settled in the same neighbor hood and raised families. His son Peter, father of John, inheirited one-th ird of the old homestead, and was one of the representative men of the reg ion, over which he was known far and wide. The excellent reputation of t he family name did not suffer at his hands, and he was respected wherev er known. He died on the old place, from paralysis, aged 52 years. His wif e, Catherine (Walter( Leppla, was a native of a neighboring village, but b elonged to the same church society and judicial district. Her long and use ful life was closed in 1879, when she reached the age of about seventy yea rs; she was an excellent Christian woman; and a member of the Protestant C hurch. Of her nine children seven grew to be men and women.John Leppla, the eldest of four sons, was a farmer before leaving Europ e. Emigrating to America when nineteen years old, he first located in Mont gomery County, Penn., where an uncle, Henry Leppla, was then living, b ut is now a resident of Greenville township, Outagamie county., Wis. The y oung man remained in that locality four years, and in 1856 came to Milwauk ee county, Wis., where for ten years he engaged in farming in Granville to wnship. Then selling out and removing to Outagamie county he purchased eig hty acres in Greenville township, which he soon afterward sold, however, a nd entered mercantile business in Appleton; where he bought property; the re he achieved success, but was not satisfied with city life. The open s ky and broad country fields had a greater attraction for him, and he accor dingly traded his Appleton property for a farm in Dale township to whi ch he removed May 26, 1868. This farm contained 200 acres, and was o ne of the best in the township; subsequently he sold it to his brother Hen ry, who now manages it. Mr. Leppla, desiring to retire from the active lif e, built a store in Dale in 1885, renting it to other parties; but in 18 89 he was obliged to assume personal charge of it, since which time he h as continued in it's management, and his nephew, S.R. Wason has been in pa rtnership with him since 1891. The firm carries a general stock and enjo ys a good patronage.Mr. Leppla was married while living in Milwaukee county, to Miss Pauline H erzwurm, a native of Germany. Both are members of the German Reformed Chur ch, in which he has served as deacon; politically he is a Republican, havi ng voted that ticket in all Presidential elections, and has been a consist ent adherent to the principles of that party. He has served as town chairm an three times, and has also been town treasurer and town assessor. As a p ublic man he is well known in this county, and enjoys the confidence and r espect of all. He was the first incumbant of Dale Postoffice, having be en appointed in 1876, under President Grant; was again appointed during t he adminstration of President Harrison, and made a record for honor and fi delity to duty that should serve as an example to younger generation s. In all his positions of honor and trust he has been equally faithful a nd merits the esteem which is accorded him.

History of Outagamie County - Commemorative Biographical Record page 602-6 03Henry Leppla, a well to do farmer of Dale Township, Outagamie county was b orn October 10, 1846 in Rhein Pfalz, Germany, and is a son of Peter Leppl a. When quite young he learned the wagon maker's trade, and followed it un til the age of twenty-one, when he was drafted into the army. He served ne arly three years when the German-Franco war broke out, and like a true pat riot, continued in the service of his country. He was placed in the Pione er Department of Engineers, and was before Paris for seven long months, h is engineer corps rendering valuable service in that memorable struggl e. He was a common soldier, but five and one half months, when he was prom oted to the position of corporal, which rank he maintained until the clo se of the war. Mr. Leppla's first engineer work was at Weissenberg, near t he northern boundary of Alsace, in Bavaria; the next was before Paris, whe re more earnest work awaited them. He now has a French officer's revolv er in his possession, which he exhibits as a trophy of that terrible confl ict.On his return from the army, Mr. Leppla was only twenty-five years old des pite his several years experience in the army, embarked for America accomp anied by his fiancée, Miss Julia Shoemaker, then twenty-three years of ag e. On their arrival they went at once to the home of Mr. Leppla's brothe r, John Leppla, who had secured a farm in Dale, Outagamie county, Wi s. at which place they were married October 10, 1871; it being the birthd ay anniversary of both brothers. Mr. Leppla was somewhat disappointed wi th the country, but at the earnest solicitation of his brother he remaine d, and together they improved the eland and paid all indebtedness. Duri ng this period his opinion had undergone a change, and he finally bought o ut his brother's interest, now possessing one of the finest farms in the c ounty, consisting of 190 acres of land and substantial building s. He is a very enterprising farmer, and insists upon having all the mode rn improvements in machinery, which will make his work lighter and his ho me comfortable.Politically, Mr. Leppla's a Republican. He is upright, conscientious and u nobtrusive, with a generous stock of good common sense, a commodity whi ch often proves of more value than the most finished education. He is an h onored member of the German Reformed Church and contributes generously tow ards its support. He is the father of five children; three of whom are liv ing, viz; Daniel and Johnny H., and Wallie Oscar; two are deceased; John ny and Amanda, both having died of diphtheria.

COMMENT: This particular surname appears as Minier/Meaney/Maeney. I have never been able to find any censuses for Mary Louise/Louise/or Lois Minier/Meaney/Maeny anywhere. I suspect that she was never married. FYI, the marriage record for Hilaire Landerman (sic) to Louise MINIER ws on 14 Sep 1891 in Fond du Lac County, WI. "MEANEY" is an Irish surname; Minier is a French-Canadian surname. And what MAENY is I do not know.

One of their sons, Irving/Irvin Abbott Leppla was born in Greenville Township, Outagamie Co., WI ca 1885. If you check his WWI Draft Card, it will list his place. See 1910 US Census for Irvin A. Leppla in Oconto, Oconto Co., WI; see 1920 US Census for Irving Leppla in Oconto, Oconto Co., WI. He should also be in the 1930 US Census in Green Bay or in Brown County, WI. He married Josephine "Josie" Minier/Maeney/Meaney/Mercoe, step-daughter of Hilaire/Hilary/Eli Landreman and Mary Louise, aka Louise aka Lois Minier/Maeney/Meaney on 12 SEP 1906 in Menominee, Menominee Co., MI. Death gloom shrouds the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Leppa, Jr. (sic) and the parents hearts are bowed in grief. Their sorrow is caused by the demise of their little two-month-old son, Oscar, who died Monday morning. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the German Reformed church, Rev. Kurtz officiating. Interment in the cemetery just east of the village. THE RECORDER extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved parents.

Obituary:
Amanda La Fortune, age 96, of Medina, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at Carolina Manor in Appleton. She had a long and meaningful life and was ready to be with the Lord. Amanda was born to John and Mary Leppla on March 23, 1910. She was the sixth of eight children and was the final surviving family member. On July 16, 1932, Amanda was united in marriage to Wesley La Fortune.
She was a lifetime member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Dale and enjoyed participating in many Women's Guild activities. She was proud of her lifelong membership in the Royal Neighbors of America. With a great love for people, she was always available to help family and friends. When the frost was out of the ground she could be found working in her flowerbeds early in the morning, one of her favorite activities. Amanda and Wesley enjoyed spring walleye fishing on the Wolf River and traveling throughout the United States and Canada.
She is survived by two daughters: Jeanne (John) Myers, Appleton; and Jo Ann Wolff, Appleton; and a son, Duane (Nancy) La Fortune, Little Falls, MN; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by Wesley, her husband of 63 years in 1994; two brothers: Bill and Harry; four sisters: Elma, Carrie, Marie and Lilia; a granddaughter, Cheryl Wolff and great-granddaughter, Crystal Anderson.
Funeral services for Amanda will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Dale with Rev. Greg Watling officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Dale. Friends may call at the Borchardt & Moder Funeral Home on Monday, March 5, 2007, in Hortonville from 5-8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
Special thank you to all the Angels at Caroline Manor and in Media - all those who lovingly cared for her when she could no longer do it herself. Those who cleaned and bandaged her surgeries, brought cookies and prayers and visited, ran errands, mowed grass, shoveled or plowed her driveway. So she could continue living in her home longer. So many acts of kindness, we are so grateful. Thank you! Their halos and wings will be waiting for them when they retire to heaven.

Zerelda M. Little, 80, of St. Paul, Minn., died Sund ay morning, May 19th, at Bethesda Lutheran Medical Center in St. Paul foll owing a lengthy illness. She was born July 2nd, 1904, in Kaukauna, Wiscon sin and was the former Zeralda Leppla. She was married to James Little a nd 1932, and he preceded her in death on February 10th, 1983. She was a g raduate of the Milwaukee State teachers College and taught kindergart en in Washington D.C., for several years. She moved to Chicago where s he became the children's program manager for the Litton's department sto re in Chicago. Survivors include two sisters, Helen Leppla Erickson, a Ch evy Chase Maryland, Doris Leppla, Ashland Wisconsin, several cousins. A c ommittal service will be held Thursday, May 23rd, at the Holy Cross cemete ry chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Juvenal Pfalzer officiating. Burial wi ll be in the Holy Cross cemetery. Nick, Dorothy Mae
Dorothy Mae Nick, 90, Green Bay, passed away July 14, 2009, at Unity Hospice in De Pere on the date that would have been her 64th wedding anniversary.
She was born Dorothy Sullivan on May 20, 1919, to William and Helen (McCarthy) Sullivan in Green Bay. Dorothy attended Green Bay East High School and graduated from high school in Appleton.
She married Wilfred "Willy" Nick on July 14, 1945. They raised their three children in Green Bay, and while being a mom Dorothy worked several part-time jobs, including the U.S. Postal Service and Smart Fashions in Green Bay.
In her spare time, she enjoyed working outside, reading and visiting her children.
A strong, feisty spirit and a love for life and family are qualities that Dorothy exemplified and were appreciated by those who knew her well. She was an especially avid Packer fan and attended all home games, even the coldest, until nearly her 80th birthday.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy (John) Adams, Green Bay; and Mary Nick, Madison; son, William (Carol) Nick, Sturgeon Bay; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with a ninth on the way.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Eileen Hoel.
Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St., from 10 to noon Friday. Memorial service at noon at the funeral home with Fr. Mark Falcone officiating. Online condolences may be sent to Dorothy's family at www.prokowall.com.

Mr. Miles Leppla of Cedarburg passed away April 25, 2012. He was 91 years old.
Miles was born in Medina, WI on June 16, 1920, son of Rolla and Frieda (Panzer) Leppla. Miles and his parents moved to Town of Port Washington when he was very young. He worked at Gilson in Port Washington and then on a farm in Germantown as a hired hand. He retired from Cedarburg Supply Company after 30 years where he delivered coal and then worked in the mill area grinding feed and selling dog food, salt and flour.
He also worked several years at the Ozaukee County Fair. Miles loved to do woodworking. He could build or fix anything. He was confirmed at Friedens Church in Port Washington and went to school in Knellsville. Miles also loved gardening.
On June 13, 1959, Miles was united in marriage to June Hill at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedarburg.
Mr. Leppla is survived by his wife, June and their three children: Jane (Earl) Figge of Waupun, Neil (Betty) of Richfield and Ray (Sherri) of Port Washington, 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is further survived by three sister-in-laws Harriet Leppla of West Bend, Delores Leppla of Cedarburg and Gladys Grulke of Oconomowoc. Miles was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Clarence and Lawrence, and an infant son Roy.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, N60 W6047 Columbia Road, Cedarburg on Thursday May 3, 2012 at 6 PM with Pastor Brent Halverson officiating. Burial will be at Immanuel Cemetery in Cedarburg on Friday morning. Visitation will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedarburg on Thursday from 4-6 PM followed by fellowship after the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church appreciated. Eernisse Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Cedarburg is assisting the family with arrangements.

Lawrence K. Leppla, 81, of West Bend died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007.
He was born Aug. 22, 1926 in Port Washington to the late Rolla and Frieda (nee Panzer) Leppla and married Henrietta "Harriet" Wagner on June 19, 1954 at Holy Angels Catholic Church.
Larry served in the U.S. Army during th Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he returned to the Port Washington area.
After their marriage, Law-rence and Harriet settled in West Bend where he began working for the U.S. Post Office as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1986 after 30 years of service.
During his time at the post office he also worked parttime at West Bend Mutual Insurance Co. and then Claims Management Services in the maintenance department.
Following his retirement from the post office, he worked full time until retiring in December, 2006.
Lawrence was a Fourth Degree member of the Father Casper Rehrl Council 1964 Knights of Columbus, a member of Lodge 1398 Loyal Order of the Moose and a charter member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Harriet; five children, Larry (Katherine) of Waukesha, Margaret (Jeff) Scheibel of Howards Grove, Patrick (Susan) of North Royalton, Ohio, Michael of Tampa Bay, Fla. and Theresa of Fond du Lac; and seven grandchildren, Andrew and Alex Leppla, Mark and Eric Scheibel, Samantha Leppla and Sean and Grace Leppla.
Larry is further survived by his brother, Miles (June) of Cedarburg; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Delores Leppla of Port Washington, Evelyn Kalies of West Bend, Nellie Wagner of West Bend, Joan (Erv) Claas of Sussex, Mary Snyder of West Bend, Raymond (Nancy) Wagner of Odessa, Texas, Bonnie Voeks of Boltonville, Carol Lindemann of West Bend and Sue Ann (Peter) Geib of West Bend; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death was his brother, Clarence Leppla.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, West Bend, with Rev. Jeffrey Haines presiding.
Burial will follow in Washing-ton County Memorial Park,West Bend.
Visitation will be at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until a prayer vigil at 7 p.m., and also at the church only on Thursday from 9:30 until 10:15 a.m.

Eugene "Gene" Tellock, 80, Appleton, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Rennes Health Center in Appleton, due to complications of cancer. Gene was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Greenville, Wis., son of the late Leah and Emil (Leppla) Tellock. On June 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marlene Blank in Oshkosh, Wis. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Gene was employed by Courtney & Plummer in Neenah, where he worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He also worked for Landwehr & Hackel, Appleton Asphalt and Murphy's. Gene served his country with the United States Army.
Gene is survived by his sons, Jeff (Janet) Tellock, Medina; and Joel (Barbara) Tellock, Glendale Heights, Ill. He is further survived by his grandson, Zachary; as well as many friends and relatives.
The funeral service for Gene will be Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clayton, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dale Zwieg officiating. Friends and family are invited to call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service and also Monday evening at the Borchardt & Moder Funeral Home in Hortonville, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Greenville.

Obituary:
Appleton, Wisconsin - Carala Vonne (McGinnis) Spengler, age 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep June 17, 2018 at The Bridges Nursing Home. She was born August 2, 1931 in Appleton, to the late Edward and Lydia (Leppla) McGinnis. She grew up in Greenville, on the family farmstead known as Leppla's Corners, which is now part of Chaska Golf Course. Carala graduated from Appleton High School in 1949, followed by 2 years at U.W. Fox Valley, then a year in Milwaukee at Spencerian Secretarial School. She held a few secretarial and administrative positions, spending 6 years at the Appleton Machine Company, but was most proud of her 25+ years with the Appleton Area School District, retiring in 1990. She was the secretary at Badger, Twin Willows, and Woodlawn Elementary schools simultaneously, as well as Madison Jr. High. She finished her career in Media Services at the Morgan Administrative Building.
Following her retirement, she went on to being a grandmother and "nanny" for her two cherished grandsons, Alex and Tyler, whom she was immensely proud of. Carala was also very involved with her church, Emmanuel United Methodist, volunteering on the Caring Ministries team, and was very dedicated to the Methodist Women's Circle group. Throughout her adult life she was also a proud and active member of the American Legion Post 38 Auxiliary, serving in almost every position including Auxiliary President. For years, she was honored to carry the flag leading a group of high school girls as they dropped poppies on Veterans' graves at the Legion service on Memorial Day.
Carala is survived by her daughter Julie L. Haas (Spengler), her son-in-law Michael Haas, grandson Alex (Alyssa) Haas, grandson Tyler Haas and great-grandson Felix Haas, all of Appleton.
The family would like to thank the 8th floor staff at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center (formerly AMC), and the staff at The Bridges of Appleton. Julie would also like to thank the entire Haas family for always including her mom in all family gatherings, and also Carala's long-time neighbor Sue Johnson for always keeping an eye out for her.
A memorial service will be held at Wichmann Funeral Home on Monday, June 25 at 6pm, with visitation from 4:30pm until the time of the service, with Pastor Ben Morris officiating.
