(The above data is from V. 24 Deaths p 218, Chippe wa Co., WI); Immigrated at age 20, arriving in New York in June, 1872; app lied for Citizenship on Nov 4, 1876 in Calumet County, WI; became a Natura lized Citizen Apr 9, 1890 in Calumet County, WI.
    The following information was compiled by Tilman Anderson: On Jan. 1, 1852, Anton and Magdalena (Bustert) Lauer gave birth to t he eldest of their 6 sons, Mathias. He arrived in a period of turmoil (177 1-1919) when the German Empire was flourishing and Prussia was one of it 's dominant States. Mathias immigrated from *Greimerath, Kr. Saarburg, Germany in 1872, ar riving in New York in June, 1872 from LeHavre, France. Whether he lef t, at this time, from a foreign port, because of all the unrest in Euro pe we'll never know. The Lauers who descended from Mathias never really ta lked much about how or why he left Prussia. In fact, it was difficu lt to get the Lauers from any generation up to about 1950 to talk abo ut any of their past lives. Some of the younger Lauers would dismiss th is silence with, "They're probably afraid Germany may still try to dra ft them into their army." Anyway, we next find Mathias in Calumet Coun ty, Wis., applying for U.S. Citizenship on Nov. 4, 1876, and he beca me a citizen on April 9, 1890 in Calumet Circuit Court. He married Jose phine Goetzman of New Franken, Wis. (Where she was born on Sep. 4, 18 55 to Anton and Barbara Goetzman). They were married in the little chur ch of St. John's in the small hamlet named St. John, Wis. on Oct. 13, 187 4. * Information from Fr. James Antoine. An 1893 Plat Book for Calumet County shows Mathias owning 80 acr es in Sec 10, T 19 N of R 19 E... or about 2 miles south of St. John a nd about 2 miles west of Hilbert, Wis. All their children would be baptized at St. John's and are as follows :

    The Wis. census of 1895 shows the family still intact in St. John's. T he Fed. census of 1900 shows the family (except Christina) in Stanley, Wis . As recorded in the Register of Deeds Office of Chippewa County, Wi s. in Vol 69 Deeds, p. 522 on Feb. 19, 1898, Jacob Lauer bought Lo ts 1 & 25 of Block 1 of Stanley Manufacturers' Ist Addition to the Vi llage of Stanley, (Stanley became a City on Mar. 17, 1898). As further recorded in the Reg. of Deeds of Chippewa Co. in V ol 71 D p. 630 on Oct 26, 1899 for $400, Jacob Lauer sold to Math (Mathia s) Lauer Lots I & 25 of Blk 1 of Stanley Manufacturers' to the Villa ge of Stanley. This is only theory, but Mathias Lauer, Sr. and his brother, Jacob, wi th, perhaps Mathias, Jr, age 22 and Anton, age 19 built the Lauer Hardw are store on the corner of S. Broadway St. and Maple St. during the peri od from Spring of 1898 to late Summer of 1899 on Lot 25 of Blk I of Stanl ey Manufacturers' 1st Add. to Stanley. Lot 1 was always used for a gard en for the Lauer family, which occupied the living quarters above the stor e. Mathias then moved his family to Stanley, except for Christina. She h ad married Anton Utschig on June 2, 1896 at St. John's in St. John, Wis. a nd was pregnant with her first child, Maria, who would be born Jan. 25, 1 900 in St. John. Note: On page 222 of the Stanley Centennial book it is mentioned th at Mathias built a hardware store on Stanley's south side in 1899 and cond ucted the first funeral parlor in Stanley.

    The following obituary appeared in the STANLEY REPUBLICAN, Vol. 35, no. 9, p.1, July 11, 1930:CITIZEN OF QUARTER CENTURY DIES OF PARALYSIS, Mathew Lauer Succumbs, Foll owing Paralytic Storke, on Wednesday Evening. Mathew Lauer, prominent and respected citizen, devout churchman, kind n eighbor and devoted husband and father died at his home in this city on We dnesday evening at 10:15, following a paralytic stroke which he suffer ed on Monday, aged 78 and one half years. He had been in failing health f or several months. he was born in Germany on January 1, 1852. He ca me to America in 1870 and settled at St. Johns, Wis. On Oct. 13, 18 74 he was married to Miss Josephine Goetzman. They made their home the re for 24 years and came to this city in 1898. He entered the mercanti le business soon after his arrival here. Eight children were born, sev en of whom survive. Christina, Mrs. A. Utschig of Chilton, Jacob E., of G reen Bay, Anton J., of Chippewa Falls, Matt F., Jr., Peter E., Fred N., a nd Mayme of this city. His wife also survives, also two brothers, Jac ob of Menasha, and Nicholas of Germany. Eleven grandchildren and six gre at grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 :30 A.M. from St. Ann's church.

    Pioneer Merchant Passes Away
    Math F. Lauer, a resident of Stanley almost all his life, passed away s uddenly at his home on Thursday at the age of 83. Funeral services were h eld for him on Monday morning at St. Anne's Catholic Church, the Rev. Edmu nd Cramer officiating, and interment was made in St. Mary's Cemetery. Pal lbearers were Norbert, Anton, George, Leonard, Herman, and Bernand Lauer. Mr. Lauer was born on October 8, 1875 in St. John's, Wis. He came to S tanley as a small boy with his parents. His father buildt the Lauer Hardw are Store and he has spent his entire life here, operating the store for m any, many years. He was married to Mary Seffer in Chippewa Falls in 1919. She passed aw ay in 1946. Surviving is one son, Francis of Chandler, Ariz., four grandchildren, a nd two brothers, Peter of Stanley, and Anton of Chippewa Falls. His paren ts and two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. He was a member of St. Anne's Church and of the Holy Name Society.

    MRS. OTTO BERG
    Mrs. Otto (Nina Mae) Berg, age 69, formerly of 623 Miles St., Chippe wa Falls, passed away unexpectedly at her residence Sunday, January 24. She was born October 25, 1901 in Stanley, Wis., daughter of Anton J. La uer and Ada E. Hayes. The family moved to Junction City, Wis., where Mr s. Berg attended the Junction City Schools. She was married July 26, 19 22 and resided here since that time. She was a member of the Trinity Unit ed Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Stanley (Lois) McIlquham of Rou te 1, Jim Falls, one son, Eugene Berg of Chippewa Falls, her mother, Mr s. Ada E. Lauer, 18 grandchildren and five great grandhchildren. She w as preceded in death by her husband Otto and her father. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 2 p.m. at the Mason-Weber Funer al Home with the Rev. John Wreford officiating. Burial will be made in Fo rest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mason-Weber Funeral Home from 4 p.m. today unt il the time of services.

    Esther C. McHugh, age 85, of Chilton, died on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. She was born March 15, 1923, in Chilton, daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Utschig) Salm. Esther married Harold J. "Pete" McHugh on December 30, 1942, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1990. Esther was a member of Good Shepherd Church, formerly St. Augustine Parish, and the Christian Women. She enjoyed playing sheepshead and belonged to several card clubs in the area. She also was fond of the time she spent at her exercise class she took at Fox Valley Tech in Chilton.
    Survivors include her children: Mary Jane McHugh, Brookfield; Donald (Lou Ann) McHugh, Stoughton; three grandchildren: Jason (Marissa) McHugh, McFarland; Jeffrey McHugh, Stoughton; Kelly McHugh, Stoughton; a great-grandchild, Nola McHugh; and two sisters: Armella (John) Mangin, Ocean Springs, Mississippi; Marie (Del) Hammond, Bellevue, Ohio. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2009, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 until 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2009, when the service will be held. A memorial fund has been established in the name of Esther C. McHugh.

    LeRoy H. Utschig, 71, of Hubertus, WI, passed away January 14, 2012, after a courageous battle with Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis. LeRoy was born June 26, 1940, to Raymond and Rosetta (Brantmeier) Utschig and grew up on a dairy farm in St. John, Wisconsin.
    He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Gauthier); son, Brad (Michele), daughter, Lisa (Christopher) and grandsons: Ryan, Gavin and Nathan. LeRoy is also survived by his sister, Lois Zachek; brothers-in-law, Lester Nett (Laurel), Gene Gauthier (Mary), and Russell Matzke; sister-in-law, Rita Drewieske (John). LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elaine Nett; and sister-in-law, Joan Matzke. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and his beloved pet, Taffi.
    LeRoy spent over 50 years in the insurance business as an underwriter, educator, published writer of insurance articles, and expert witness in insurance. He was fully accredited in all aspects of insurance and was president of Utschig Insurance Publications, Inc.

    John E. Zachek, age 57, of Appleton, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Cherry Meadows Hospice following a battle with cancer. John was born in Appleton on June 29, 1959, to the late Howard and Lois (Utchig) Zachek. He graduated from Appleton East High School with the class of 77. On January 21, 2000, he was united in marriage to Theresa Bilyeu in Appleton. John was a plant manager at Fairmont Minerals in Readfield, where he's worked for many years. He loved animals and sci-fi movies. Last month, John completed his "bucket list" by having the opportunity to take his granddaughters to the New Zoo in Green Bay on Labor Day.
    He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa, Appleton; two daughters: Megann (Andy) Hooyman, and their 3 daughters Zoey, Rylee, and Callie of Appleton and Holly Underhill, of Appleton; his mother, Lois Zachek, Appleton; a sister, Lynn (Todd) Krueger, Appleton; and a brother, Bob (Jennifer) Zachek, Appleton. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews, and his best friend John Schwarzbauer.
    He was preceded in death by his Father, Howard and a brother, Don.
    A memorial service will take place at 6 pm on Monday, October 17, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel. Friends and relatives may visit at the funeral chapel on Monday from 4 pm until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the ThedaCare Physicians, hospice nurses at Cherry Meadows, and the staff at ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center for the compassionate care shown to John.

Don worked at Midtec for many years. He loved the great outdoors - especially hunting and fishing, and was also an avid Packer fan.

    Don is survived by two sons: Eric and Chad Zachek; his mother, Lois Zachek, Appleton; two brothers: John (Theresa) Zachek, Appleton and Robert (Jennifer) Zachek, Town of Harrison; and his sister, Lynn (Todd) Krueger, Kaukauna.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Zachek.

    A memorial service will take place at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 18, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5 pm until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established.
