He was born July 4, 1905, in Appleton and lived here all of his life, being employed at the Appleton Woolen mills for 13 years. Mr. VanderLinden was a member of Sacred Heart church. Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Patricia, Phyllis, at home his mother, Mrs. Henry VanderLinden, Appleton; a brother, Edward, Appleton; two sisters. Vander Linden, James E., AppletonAge 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2003 at Appleton Me dical Center. Jim was born October 30, 1912 in Appleton, son of the late J ohn and Rose (Birling) Vander Linden and has resided in Appleton all of h is life. He was formerly employed by Frank J. Strebel Interior Decorato rs for many years and later by Zwicker Knitting Mills until his retiremen t. Jim was united in marriage to Lucille Foley on July 4, 1937, shari ng 25 years together before her death on March 16, 1963. He later marri ed Veronica Sewall of Menasha. She preceded him in death on January 18, 19 91. Jim will be remembered as a hands on type of guy who lived life to t he fullest. This included building his own home on Hoover St. in Appleto n, even digging the basement. He could fix just about anything and was ve ry proud of his yard. But the main thing he will be remembered for was h is love of music. Jim was an accomplished musician who could play sever al instruments. He played for several area bands including Tom Temple a nd The Bob Tubbs Orchestras. He also loved his church and was an active me mber of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.Jim will be deeply missed by his daughter Mary (Daryl) Nutting of Appleto n; two sons James R. Jane E. Timm, age 93, of Appleton, died Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Jane was born on December 2, 1921 in Appleton, the daughter of the late John J. and Rosinen (Birling) Vander Linden. Jane married Raymond Timm on April 13, 1946. He preceded her in death on September 14, 2012. Together, they had one son, Ronnie, who passed away at the age of 9.
Jane worked at a neighborhood grocery store for a short time, after which she was a homemaker. She enjoyed people and loved to spend time visiting relatives. Jane was a great friend to her neighbors (and their dogs) and they, in turn, were very good to her. She had a sweet tooth and would not turn down a cookie or sweet roll. Jane had a remarkable memory, sharing detailed stories of life in Appleton during the early 1900's.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, brothers; John (Eleanor), Clifford (Evelyn) and James (Veronica), and sisters; Mayme (Jack) Braun, Viola (Clifford) Tierney, Rose (Bill) Schuldes, Agnes (Albert) Jansen and Esther (Harold) Dehn. Jane is survived by a brother in law, Robert Lueck and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 11:00 am at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St, Appleton, with Deacon Mark Farrell officiating. A time of visiting and sharing of memories will be held before the service, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. Per Jane's wishes, in lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in her name.
The family would like to thank the medical staff on 3rd floor at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their kindness and care for Jane.

Alice Weber, age 95, of Menasha, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013, at Oakridge Gardens Nursing Center. Alice was born February 12, 1918, in Appleton, the daughter of Charles C. and Irene (Hawley) Gear. She had two siblings: Sybil and Margaret (Midge). She graduated from Menasha High School in 1935. Alice married the love of her life, J. Gordon Weber on April 23, 1938, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Menasha. She worked at Vals Beauty Salon until the birth of her first son and then became a full time homemaker. The Webers had four children; Chuck, Barb, Bob and Jim. During her high school years she was a proud member of the Menasha High School Band. In 1931 the band took first honors in the marching contest at the Nationals in Tulsa, OK and in 1933 the band performed at the World Fair in Chicago. At one of these events they were directed by John Philip Sousa. Alice was a Pink Lady at Theda Clark Medical Center since January 25, 1971 and a life member of their auxiliary. She knit many baby sweaters for the gift shop at the hospital. Alice was a member of the DAR, the Menasha Homemakers (in which she held several offices), and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She loved music, knitting, crafts, reading, baking, cooking, watching the Green Bay Packers and spending time with her family. Her favorite saying was it could be worse. Survivors include her four children: Chuck (Jean) Weber, Chaska, MN; Barb (Ken) Couillard, Appleton; Bob (Kris) Weber, Surprise, AZ; and Jim (Lisa) Weber, Green Bay; eleven grandchildren: Deanna (Carl) Prine, Bryan (Shanna) Weber, Todd (Julie) Pyszora, David Pyszora, Jason (Stephanie) Weber, Curt (Bobbie Jo) Weber, Craig (Jennifer) Weber, James Weber, Allison Weber, and Jordan Weber; two step grandchildren: Kathy (Jon) Willis and Kerri (Gary) Jepson; 13 great-grandchildren: Ella and Cole Weber; Emily and Rachel Pyszora; Jacob, Josh and Joey Weber; Kara and Ben Weber; Bryce and Conner Weber; and Wyatt and Riddik Aspenson; and three step great-grandchildren: Arron and Emma Willis, and Keither Jepson. She is further survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon, on July 20, 1981; her grandson, Richard Ricky Pyszora; her mother and father-in-law, Edith (Allanson) Weber Collins and Joseph Weber; step father-in-law, Grant Collins; two sisters and their husbands: Sybil (Jerry) Felton and Margaret Midge (Raymond) Sensenbrenner; and sister-in-law and husband, Alice (Edward) Lingnowski. The funeral mass for Alice will be celebrated Monday, June 3, 2013, 11:30 a.m, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Fr. Larry Abler, OFM Cap. officiating. Visitation will begin Monday at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of mass at the church. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. A memorial in Alices name is being established. The family would like to thank the staff at Gardenview Assisted Living and Oakridge Gardens for the wonderful care and compassion they gave to Alice and her family the past years.

Edward J. Hawley (Uncle Eddie), age 88 passed away peacefully with his family by his side Wednesday August 6, 2014. Eddie was born in Appleton on January 5th, 1926. He grew up on a small farm in Mackville, where he attended school and mass his whole life. It was there that he met his future bride Mary Hofacker. They were married on June 9th, 1962, and spent just over two years together when a tragic car accident claimed Mary's life on October 23, 1964.
Eddie was very proud to serve his country as a member of the United States Army, and fought in the Korean War. Upon his return he worked for many years at Appleton Mfg and Hayes Mfg. Eddie was very active at his home parish of St Edward in Mackville. He was always faithful in making sure the doors were unlocked for all masses along with other duties that he reverently attended too. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage and was known to send cards and partake in a little green beer celebrating for St Patrick Day.
Three years ago Eddie was no longer able to live in the house he called home since his early childhood. This move took him to the nursing home, most recently Carolina Manor. It was evident to all of us, by how many visitors he had in his final hours, just how well he was loved by all of the staff and fellow residents.
Eddie is survived by many family members, most notably his nephew and caretaker Kevin Hawley. He is further survived by his in-laws: Rose and Ila Mae Hawley; Annie, Paul, Tony, Vera, Delores, Geraldine, Cheryl, Mary Ellen, and Roseanne Hofacker, Linda DeBruin, Charlotte Belonger, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his beloved Mary, Eddie was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Rose Hawley; Mary's parents William and Ruth Hofacker; brothers Norbert and Kenneth Hawley; in-laws, Francis, Joe, William Jr, John (Red), Henry, and Nicholas Hofacker, Robert and Margaret Parker, Howard and Catherine Belonger, Marilyn Nielsen; niece Kristine Hofacker; nephew William (Bud) Hofacker III, great niece Hope Hofacker, and a very special great nephew Eric Hawley.
Funeral liturgy for Eddie will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday August 12, 2014 at ST. EDWARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, Highway 47 N, Mackville, with Fr. Walter Stumpf officiating. A time of visitation will be held at church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the St. Edward Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers a memorial in Eddie's name is being established.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the following for all of the visits, prayers, and assistance - all of his caretakers, especially Eddie's "girls" at Carolina Manor, his doctors and nurses, Heartland Hospice, the VA Staff, and his dear trusted friends Father Stanley Plutz, Tom Janssen, and Elaine Van Gompel, and all who spent time with Eddie.

Hawley, Kenneth A. "Kenny"Ken Hawley, age 72, of Appleton, died at his home on Friday, Sept. 2, 20 05 with his loving family at his side, following a 32-year battle with dia betes. Ken was born in Appleton on Nov. 9, 1932, son of the late David "Ar t" and Rose (Peters) Hawley. As a young man, he worked with his fami ly on the farm near Appleton, and for over twenty years worked at Kool's B rothers in Menasha. Since 1982 he had worked for the Outagamie County High way Department, and for over twenty-five years was a member of the Grand C hute Fire Department. His number one priority was spending time with his f amily, and he also enjoyed gardening, snowmobiling, and raising pheasant s. Everyone will remember the soft spot he had for his dog Buddy, and h ow he enjoyed his company.On May 22, 1957, Ken married the former Ilene "Ila Mae" Meulemans in Wrigh tstown; she survives. Jerome C. Hawley, age, 82, found peace at home among family at his bedside, on Monday, May 25, 2009. He was born on October 15, 1926, son of the late, Raymond and Johanna (Peters) Hawley. Jerome was a medic in the Pacific Theatre (Japan) during WWII. He received a Journeyman Tinsmith degree from Fox Valley Technical College and then was employed with James River Paper Company where he worked until his retirement in 1985. Jerome enjoyed spending time with his family and was always willing to help build or repair anything possible. He loved to go to the casino and found the quarter machines with the handles to be his favorite. Jerome also found much enjoyment working on different projects up north. On May 28, 1949, Jerome married Romilda Mainz in Charlesburg, WI.
He is survived by his wife; Romilda of nearly 60 years, three children; Debra (Gary) Pontow, Appleton; Jane (Craig) Johnson, Darboy; and Mark (Bonnie) Hawley, Appleton. Jerome is further survived by six grandchildren: Luke (Christy) Hawley, Appleton; Laura (fiance, Paul Witt) Hawley, Clintonville; Caitlin (fiance, Ben Van Den Wyngaard) Abel, Darboy; Phillip and Mark Pontow, Appleton; and Tony Abel, Darboy; a great-grandson, Carter Hawley, Clintonville: and a sister; Mildred (Robert) Gerrits.
He was preceded in death by a sister; Gladys, a godson, Robert "Bobbie" Gerrits and many brothers and sisters-in-law.

Yvonne Florence (Kufner) Meulemans, age 70, of Kaukauna, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 15, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at Appleton Medical Center. She was born February 5, 1939, in the Town of Menasha to the late Erwin and Florence (Hawley) Kufner. On September 26, 1959, she was united in marriage to Ernest Meulemans and together they celebrated their 50th anniversary this past September.

Milton Vanderlinden, age 82, of Oceanside, CA, died Saturday, November 18, 2006. He was born April 20, 1924, in Appleton, WI, and lived in San Diego County for 64 years. He was a painter for the Vista School District for 13 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for more than 30 years, retiring in 1972. He served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Guadalcanal, Saipan and Tarawa.
Mr. Vanderlinden is survived by his wife of 37 years, A. Arlene Vanderlinden, Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law: Mark and Sue Ann Vanderlinden; daughters and sons-in-law: Rebecca and Gordon Rodney, Trudy and Tom Thiele, Kristin and Richard Martinez, Juneau and Todd Catlin and Vicki and Jeff Groom; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mel Vanderlinden, age 83, of Appleton, passed away on Tuesday morning, May 19, 2015 at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah. He was born on July 30, 1931 in Appleton, to the late Clifford and Evelyn (Gerard) Vanderlinden. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, and then joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mel served his country from September 13, 1950 until September 12, 1953 and received The Purple Heart. On October 11, 1952 he married the love of his life, Mary Thompson in Daleville, Alabama. They shared 53 years together until her passing on May 19, 2006.
Mel was a race car driver at the Outagamie Speedway, and other surrounding area race tracks. He was a member of the Rusty Spokes (Motorcycle Club) and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mel retired in 1996 from Palisades Heating and Cooling in Menasha. After retirement he drove bus for Lamers Bus Lines for 15 years. Over the years Mel enjoyed motorcycling, racing, gardening, but most of all spending time with his family.
Mel is survived by his children: Debbie (Bob) Sokel, Micki (Will) Hoerning, Michael (Jerri) Vanderlinden, Shari (Bill) Block, T.C. Betty Mae Schwanke, 73, Bradenton, Fla., passed away Tuesday April 2, 2008, at Tidewell Hospice & Palliative Care, Bradenton, after a short illness. Betty was born Sept. 20, 1934, in Appleton, daughter of the late Clifford and Evelyn Vander Linden. On April 7, 1956, she married Donald A. Schwanke at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Appleton. She loved to be with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. She enjoyed spending her summers with her family at Kelly Lake in Suring, Wis., fishing, swimming, jet skiing, but mostly cruising around Kelly Lake on the pontoon boat. She was fortunate to spend the last 11 years in retirement with her loving husband of 52 years in Bradenton, Fla., during the winters.
Survivors include her husband, Donald A. James L. Tierney, 82, formerly of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away Sunday morning, June 14, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Taylor, Vollert and Jennings Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids. Rev. Al Wierzba will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Jim was born in Appleton on December 30, 1926, to Clifford and Viola (Vander Linden) Tierney. He married Clementine Ann Burghardt on August 10, 1946, in Appleton. Jim worked at Consolidated Papers, Inc. for 43 years as a pipefitter. He started work at the Interlake Mill in Appleton in 1946. In 1982 he transferred to Wisconsin Rapids to work at the Biron Mill. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from February 1944 to April 1946 on the U.S.S. Rolf.
For many years Jim sang barbershop music with the Fox Valley Aires in Appleton. He was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing with his sons and many friends at Reid Municipal City Golf Course in Appleton and the Tri-City Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Clementine (Ann Burghardt) Tierney at GNP Country Estates in Wisconsin Rapids; two daughters: Patricia Tierney-Hull, Appleton; Kathleen (Randal) Johnson. Nekoosa; two sons: Clifford Tierney, Appleton; Kelly Tierney, Nekoosa; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister (Violet Lyons) and a brother (Gerald Tierney).

Pat was born on December 31, 1933 in Kimberly the daughter of the late Albert and Agnes (Vander Linden) Jansen. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Following her education, Pat worked for a toy manufacturing company in Hortonville for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Appleton. Pat loved playing scrabble and enjoyed reading until blindness took her sight and she then began listening to books on tape.
Pat is survived by her brother, Jack Jansen; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Donald Jansen and two sisters, Shirley Hopfensperger and Donna Reiland.
The funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Valley Funeral Home, Appleton with the Rev. Jim Leary, OFM Cap., officiating. She enjoyed baking, cooking and attending her grandchildren's activities. She was delighted to be here for the birth of her first great grandson. Carol loved to play cards and watch the Packers. Beside her husband she was preceded in death by a nephew Jesse Krause and her father-in-law Elmer Fassbender. The Funeral Mass for Carol will be held at 11:00a.m. Saturday April 20, 2013 at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Hortonville with Fr. David Funk, OFM Cap. and Parish Director Greg Layton officiating. Entombment will be in the Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Appleton. Leon David Birkholz passed away with his family by his side on December 6, 2013 at Appleton Medical Center. He was born on February 23, 1947 in Appleton to Vernon and Doris (Bartlein) Birkholz, the oldest of thirteen children. Lee married Paula M. Thiel on May 15, 1970 in Sherwood, Wisconsin. They spent 43 years together in Appleton raising three sons.
Lee graduated from Appleton High School in 1965 and worked at Appleton Papers (Appvion) for 40 years as a truck driver. Over the years, he was a member of Sacred Heart and St. Bernadette Parishes. Lee was a reflective and private person preferring to remember the good in people. As a 43 year active member of the YMCA, he demonstrated a healthy lifestyle. His interest in sports began when he was on the first Appleton Little League team. He played on various baseball and basketball teams until he started following his sons' and grandchildren's sporting events and activities. His running and biking days turned into hiking and meditation time at various parks. Lee was an avid reader of historical non-fiction and enjoyed a good game of chess. His strength of spirit and focus on family was unwavering.
He is survived by his wife Paula (Thiel); sons David (Tracey), Matthew and Nathan (Meredith Mason); four grandchildren Jordan Olk, Taylor and Jaxon Birkholz, and William Birkholz; brothers William (Barbara), Robert (Kathryn), Vernon Jr., and Dann; sisters Ann (Donald) Nystrom, Lynn (Richard) Dahl, Barbara (John) Stafford, Joann (Michael) Jolette, Diane (Randy) Brady, Betty (Ben) Brewer, Laurie (Richard) Schinke; Uncle Armin (Delores) Birkholz; Aunt Elizabeth (Robert) West; and 19 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dawn Birkholz, niece Alisha Nystrom, nephew Brandon Birkholz, brother-in-law Dean DeWildt, and sister-in-law Marty (Beck) Birkholz.
Memorial Mass will be held Friday December 13, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2331 East Lourdes Drive, Appleton with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Betty Cecelia (Hawley) Ashman, age 64, of Appleton passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Froedtert Hospital with her husband and daughter by her side. She was born September 8, 1950, the second of six children, to Rose and the late Norbert Hawley. She graduated from Appleton West High School, class of 1968. During high school she worked at Quaker Dairy. Upon graduation she worked at Wichmann's Furniture for several years. She then worked at Albany International Appleton Wire Division and retired after 35 years. She married her high school boyfriend, John, on August 9, 1969, and they enjoyed over 45 years together. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic in Appleton.
She will be sadly missed and eternally loved by her husband, John; daughter Christy (Nathan) Hintz; grandsons Grant, Bryce, and Sawyer John Hintz; mother, Rose Hawley; sisters and brothers Suzanne (Roger) Metz, Chris (Mike) Gassner, Karen (Carl) Treml , and Dave (Cindy) Hawley, Gary (Mary) Hawley, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, godchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Norb Hawley, mother- and father-in-law Ginny and Earl Ashman, and sister-in-law Jean Wall.
Betty enjoyed gardening, mowing her lawn, backyard cookouts with family, watching old movies and American Idol, going for "a ride", shopping with her mom and sisters, helping elementary students with reading at her daughter's school, cheering on the Packers, watching Little House with John, spending time at the Rushes in Door County, taking care of her grandchildren, and supporting them as they played sports, participated in school Masses and concerts, and in all their academic accomplishments. Betty was always willing to drop everything to help out friends and family. Her jokes, laughter, stories, and selflessness will be greatly missed. Family and friends look forward to meeting up with her again one day.
The family thanks all doctors, nurses, caregivers, and clergy who tended to Betty's needs both in Appleton and at Froedtert Hospital in Waukesha, with a special thanks to Fr. Tom Farrell of St. Pius X parish. A memorial fund has been established in her name.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2015, from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond Street in Appleton, with a prayer service at 5:45 p.m.. Visitation will continue on Friday morning, March 27, 2015, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon at St. Pius X Parish, 500 W. Marquette Street in Appleton. The funeral Mass will be at 12:00 noon with Father Thomas Farrell officiating.
Mom, God knew that you were suffering. He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb. Robert P. Gerrits, 52, Neenah, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Theda Clark Medical Center while surrounded by family after a very courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born on Oct. 5, 1956, in Appleton, the son of Robert G. and Mildred (Hawley) Gerrits. He was a proud member of the 1975 graduating class from Appleton East High School. Bob was married to Lisa King from 1987 until 1998 and the union was blessed with two beautiful children, Ben and Chelsea. He was employed for 33 years by Presto Products as an Extrusion Specialist. Bob loved being outdoors, playing baseball, golfing, fishing and cutting wood. He was an avid Packers fan and loved to watch the History Channel.
He will be sadly missed by his children: Ben Gerrits, Green Bay, Chelsea Gerrits, Neenah; his parents: Robert G. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Wichmann Funeral Home Tri County Chapel (3212 South Oneida Street) and again on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass directly at church. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's name are appreciated to the American Cancer Society.
