The well known community leader and top staff offic er under Gen. George Patton in World War II, passed away on Nov. 3.) "Plea se do not grieve unduly over my death> As you know, death is inevitable f or all of us. God has been good to me. He has spared me from many earli er deaths, both in times of peace and war. I saw enough of this earth, exp erienced enough of life with innumerable peoples of many nations, to enab le me to know what makes man a purposeful being, that his most important d uty is to save his soul, and the souls of as many as possible of others. L ife was a grand experience, far beyond my hopes or expectations, especial ly in my later years. Please, thank God for me again and again. You may, a lso pray for me" Col. Herbert P. Schowalter.
    1972 The West Bend News dated 11/03/1972; Herbert Schowalter Officer with P atton, passes away at 79. Colonel Herbert P. Schowalter, 79, who serv ed as an enlisted man in World War I, served as a top officer with distinc tion under General George S. Patton in World War II, became an export sal es manager for the West Bend Co. after the war, and later became executi ve secretary for the West Bend Gallery of Fine Arts, died early today. Sh owalter who held the rank of retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve unt il the time of his death, was active in many community activities. He al so had traveled widely, was a public speaker on post World War II subjec ts and was the writer of several published articles. In recent years, in a ddition to his work at the gallery, he had been working on a book on Patte n's famous Seventh Army, of which he had been a part. His office contain ed boxes of research materials on the war experiences of the Seventh and G eneral Patton. Born in the town of Jackson on September 2nd, 1893, he att ended local schools and was a junior at the University of Wisconsin at Mad ison majoring in journalism when World War I interrupted his studies. Dur ing World War I, he served as an enlisted man in France and Germany duri ng 1917 and 1918, later to become commissioned as second lieutenant in 192 5. In World War II, he served on many battlefields from 1941 to 194 6. He was a battalion commander in the Fifth Army under General Mark Cla rk in North Africa and later a generel supply and maintenance officer und er Patton and General Alexander M. Patch Jr. in North Africa, Italy, south ern France, Germany and Austria. His World War II citations included t he Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with cluster, Croix de Guerre from Gener al Charles de Gaulle and the Divisional Lorraine Cross for service with Ge neral Leclerc's Second French Armored Division in 1944. He also had fi ve battle stars, one invasion Arrowhead and seven theater ribbons. His ci vilian occupation was in selling and management at the West Bend Co., star ting in 1919. He became export sales manager in 1948 and served in that c apacity until 1958 when he retired. He had traveled to 25 foreign countri es, including Russia and other Iron Curtain countries and later gave sli de presentations on his experiences. Among his many affiliations were t he following: West Bend Boy Scouts, 1911 to 1936; Post and County command er of the local Legion Post, with membership from 1920 through 1948; memb er VFW Fred A. Shaeffer Post 1393; West Bend Chamber of Commerce, preside nt in 1933; acting county chairman of the National Recovery Administrati on 1933 through 1934 chairman of Holy Angels charity drive for four yea rs in the 1930's; chairman Holy Angels School building campaign, 1949; mem ber of St. Francis Cabrini parish auditing committee 1960's, organiz er of county units of Wisconsin crippled Children's Association 1930's Ame rican Ordnance Association and Reserve officers Association of which he w as state president from 1951 through 1952. Other memberships include We st Bend Kiwanis Club, order of Lafayette New York City, the Retreads Inc ., Wisconsin Alumni Association, Milwaukee World Trade Club, Raconteurs In c., and a group of male writers, West Bend Knights of Columbus, Council f or Wisconsin Writers Inc. past president. He later received an award for d istinguished service as a founder and first chairman of the State Write rs council. Survivors include his wife Ursula (nee Feller), three childre n, Donna Jean (Mrs. Harold Roll), of San Diego, Calif.; Jo Ann (Mrs. Clare nce Loebel), Northbrook, Illinois, and Mary (Mrs. Milton Rusch), of West B end, 10 grandchildren, three sons-in-law, four brothers, Alwin, of Jackso n, Norman of West Bend, Clarence of Beloit, and Henry of West Bend. Serv ices will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Schmidt Funeral home and at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Church. Monsignor Oscar Winninghoff wi ll be a co-celebrant of the High Mass with Pastor Robert Rutzinske. Visit ation will be after 2:00 p.m. Sunday, with the vigil at 8:00 p.m. Sunda y. Burial will be in Washington County Memorial Park. Graveside rites wi ll be under the direction of Lt. Ray Dickop American Legion Post 36.
