1918 From History of Oconto County on John Verkuilen; Mr. VerKuilen was married June 12, 1893, to Hattie Driessen, who was born in Outagamie County, Wis., June 12, 1867, daughter of John and Mary (Tillirnan) Driessen, a prosperous farmer in Outagamie County. Their family consisted of eleven children, of whom the following is a brief record: Minnie, who married William Gruhl, resides in Milwaukee; Annie, who resides at home; Mary, now deceased; Hattie, wife of Mr. VerKullen; Bardeen, now Mrs. Andrew Van EUs, of Port Washington; Helen, now deceased; Fred, of Thorp, Wis .; Edward and Henry, of Worden Township; Michael, living on the home farm, and Tressia, wife of John Becker, of Appleton, Wis.

Political Leader at Kaukauna Dead After Long Career Was First Mentor in Town School - Served as First Chairman
James Driessen, 85, who for the past half, century played an active part in the community life of Kaukauna and Little Chute, died at the home of his son, Edward Driessen, 134 Sarah-st, Kaukauna, at 6:15 Wednesday evening. He was the first chairman of the town of Kaukauna. He was born in Holland In 1845 and came to this country with his parents when he was 13 years old, settling in the village of Little Chute on a small farm. He taught the first school in the town of KTaukauna, the school building at that time being located at the intersection of Depot-st and Wisconsin-ave. He took active part in political life at Kaukauna, having been town supervisor, assessor, and a member of the common council for many years. It was during his term as town supervisor that the bridges were constructed across the Fox river at Little Chute and Kaukauna. He was a chartex member of the Knights of Columbus, branch number 12, Kaukauna, and served as secretary of the organization for 30 years. He is survived by two sons, Edward, Kaukauna, and Joseph, Marion; two daughters, Mrs. Peter Lewis, Little Chute and Mrs. Anna Glaser, Omaha, Nebr., and 20 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning at Holy Cross church, Kaukauna, the Rev. F. M. Melchoirs officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery.

CONDUCT LAST RITES FOR JAMES DRIESSEN
Kaukauna - Funeral services for James Driessen. 85, early Kaukauna political leader who died Wednesday after a long illness, were held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning from Holy Cross church. The Rev. P. J. Lochman was in charge of the ceremonies and interment was in Holy Cross cemetery. Mr. Driessen was born in Holland but came to live on a farm near Little Chute when he was still .a boy. He taught the first school in this township. He was a member of the county board for a number of years and served as assessor and an alderman for this city. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, branch 12. Survivors are two sons, Edward Driessen of Kaukauna and Joseph Driessen of Marion; two daughters, Mrs. Peter Lewis of Little Chute and Mrs. Anna Glazer of Omaha, Neb.; and twenty grandchildren.

Mrs. John Verkuilen, an esteemed and well known lady of our community, passed away in Hillsboro, Wis., on Monday forenoon, Aug. 25, 1947 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John A. Cesnik. She had been in failing health for the past year. During the last few weeks her condition had been critical.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 in St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thorp. The Rev. A.M. Muckerheide, pastor, will offer a Requiem Mass. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Parish Cemetery with six grandsons as pallbearers.
Hattie Driessen Verkuilen, daughter of the former John and Mary Driessen was born near Dundas, Wis., Jan. 24th, 1867. In that community she grew to young womanhood. She was carried to John Verkuilen, June 12, 1893 in the Church of St. Francis at Hollandtown, Wis. About the year 1894, with their daughter Mayme, they moved to the town of Worden, Clark County, where they built their first log home, a few miles south of Stanley. With her husband and four children they moved to the present Verkuilen farm. This was in 1901 and they lived here for twenty-five years. Upon their retirement in 1927, they built their home in Thorp. The farm home has since then been in possession of their son Walter.
Surviving Mrs. Verkuilen are two sons, Walter W. of the home farm in the town of Worden, and Michael A., Gary, Indiana; five daughters, Josephine) Mrs. John Vandeyacht of Little Chute, (Florence) Mrs. John A. Cesnik of Hillsboro, (Susan) Mrs. Henry H. Hermsen of Little Chute, Elsie of Milwaukee, and Leona of Seattle Washington; four brothers, Fred of Thorp, Henry, Stanley and Ed of Kaukauna, and Mike of Dundas; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchildren. Also 78 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, who passed away Jan. 24, 1936, one daughter Mayme in 1922, and also John in 1920.
Mrs. Verkuilen was a member of the Christian Mother's Society, in which she took a very active part for many years.
A lady of kindly personality, she will ever be remembered as a lovely mother, a loyal friend and neighbor.

Biography:
EDWARD G. DREISSEN, the proprietor of one of Kaukauna's leading meat markets, and a self-made business man, was born in Buchanan township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, October 20, 1876, and is a son of John and Mary (Til lman) Dreissen, natives of Holland. Mr. Dreissen's parents came to the Uni ted States in 1851, and, taking up wild land, engaged in farming. John Dre issen is now residing in Woodville township, his farm being located on t he township line. He and his wife had a family of eleven children, of wh om ten are now living. Edward G. Dreissen received a country school educat ion, and in 1892 started to work in a butcher shop at Kaukauna, and duri ng the following year opened an establishment of his own. He has continu ed in the same business to the present time, and now has a well-ordered es tablishment, catering to some of Kaukauna's best trade. On November 9, 189 8, Mr. Dreissen was united in marriage with Miss Henrietta Wheaton, of Kau kauna, who died November 19, 1905, and on April 9, 1907, he married (secon d) Lucy King, of Hilbert, Wisconsin. Mr. Dreissen has four children: Evere tt, Quintem, Lozell and Margaret. He and Mrs. Dreissen are faithful membe rs of the Holy Cross congregation of the Catholic Church, and he holds mem bership in the Knights of Columbus.

Earl entered the heavenly gates on Saturday April 2, 2011, at Parkside Care Center. He was born July 20, 1914, in Appleton, son of the late Fred and Christine (Peters) Driessen. Earl married Marie DeCoster on August 4, 1936. She preceded him in death on August 11, 2008, after 72 years of marriage. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church.
Earl is survived by his son: David (Rose) Driessen, Kimberly; and two daughters: Susan (Gene) Wildenberg, Kaukauna; and Jennifer (Steven) Rochon, Kimberly. There are ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is further survived by members of Marie's family and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his daughter Lynn Beattie; and all brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held Thursday April 7, 2011, at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St. Little Chute) beginning at 9 a.m. until time of Mass at 11 a.m. The Rev. S he was a World War II Gold Star mother, a member of the auxiliary of the V FW Post 3319, and a member of St. Mary Alter society. Mar ie was born in Little Chute on February 22, 1913, daughter of the late Mat hias and Mary (Williamsen) Driessen. On May 17, 1947, she married Elmer V an Den Heuvel at St. John Catholic Church in Little Chute; he preceded h er in death on December 7, 1996. Marie worked at Bastian’s Dime Store a nd later as an assistant cook at the Kaukauna High School. She was an av id golfer, a gifted seamstress, and a frequent volunteer at St. Vince nt de Paul and the Kaukauna Community Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Hannah Fink, 89, a resident of this area all of her life, died Saturday evening after a long illness. She has resided at route 3, Kaukauna. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. today Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church, Hollandtown, with the Rev Norbert Vande Loo officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Greenwood Funeral Home until the time of services. Mrs. Fink was born Sept 2, 1886 at Hollandtown. She was a member of the Altar Society of St. Francis Church. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Robert Gladys Schwarzbauer of Menasha, a step-daughter, Mrs. Willard Eileen Liebergen of Route 3, Kaukauna; a son, Leo Fink of Peru, Indiana; a step-son, Francis Fink of Route 2, Menasha; a brother, Ben VandeYacht of Route 3, Kaukauna; and 7 grandchildren. Driessen, Robert E.680 Elder berry LaneKaukaunaAge 89, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, November 13, 200 3. Bob was born in Kaukauna on May 1, 1914, son of the late Edward and Lu cy (King) Driessen. On September 1, 1941, he married the former Marian Coe nen in Little Chute; she survives. As a young man, the local newspapers pr oclaimed him "The Wizard of the Saw." As the years, passed, the title beca me very accurate, for until his final day was known by all as a talented a nd creative woodworker. For many years, Bob was employed at Giddings and L ewis, and retired as the inspection department supervisor. He was employ ed there for a total for forty-five years. Bob was a gifted wood-worker, a nd shared his talents with many over the years. Many will remember the cou ntless hours he donated to the St. Paul Manor, helping to build staircase s, countertops, and picture frames there. In 1966, he began constructi on on the family summer home on White Potato Lake. In 1976, he retired a nd made the cottage his full-time home. There he continued with his woodwo rking and made a variety of items for his home, yard, and family members a nd friends. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with his beloved grandchildr en and great-grandchildren. Some of them have inherited his woodworking ab ilities!Bob is survived by his wife of sixty-two years: Marian Driessen of Kaukaun a; three children: Karen Geyso of Kaukauna; Robert F. Nub was a skilled patt ern maker, and was employed over the years by Thilmany Pulp and Paper, Gid dings and Lewis, and eventually retired from the Appleton Pattern Works. N ub was also an expert gardener, and many will remember his wonderful veget able and flower gardens. Each year he created a beautiful flower-filled ga rden for all to admire and enjoy. Age 96, died peacefully on February 15, 2014, surrounded by family and close friends, in the same Kaukauna, Wisconsin home in which he was born and resided his entire life, except during his Army service in the Pacific during World War II.

Born May 17, 1917 to Edward G. and Lucy King Driessen, his graduation from Kaukauna High School in 1935 was followed by employment never farther from his front door than one block: short order cook, banker, co-owner of a hardware store and, finally, joined the Wisconsin Gas Company from which he retired as District Manager in 1982.

Wed to Frances Hopfensperger in 1946, she preceded him in death in 2004. Also preceding him was a son, Christopher along with his seven siblings and their spouses: Everett (Julia), Quentin (Helen), Lozelle (Jule) Schommer, Margaret (Ronald) Reetz, Robert (Marion), Norbert "Nub" (Ann), Floyd (Marian).
Leo was a true Renaissance man who never stopped learning through voracious reading and constant involvement in activities. Where modern technology is concerned, Leo learned the basics of email and the internet but, generally, left those to his grandchildren. Beyond being an exceptional carpenter, renovating 119 Doty Street throughout his life, he was an expert gardener and soup maker.
Serving nearly 3 years of WWII in the Pacific, honorably discharged in 1946, and later joining the Army Reserves, he retired from the Army in 1967 at the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

Prior to his 1982 retirement from Wisconsin Gas Company (now WE Energy)he taught himself the art of wood carving and, over the subsequent years, created a multitude of stunning works of art that continue to enhance the beauty of churches, libraries, city halls, and businesses and homes throughout Wisconsin and beyond. He was able to enjoy his woodworking into his 95th year.

Following his retirement as district manager for the Wisconsin Gas Company, Leo became heavily involved in "his" community and hometown. Along with his friend and fellow retiree, Marvin Schumacher, Leo enlisted the skills and aid of a group of other retirees who built the first story of our current Kaukauna Chamber of Commerce. Beyond that, Mr. Driessen was instrumental in the establishment of part one of Kaukauna's Industrial Park, promoting it and encouraging businesses to relocate to the area. Leo helped raise funds for a number of projects in Kaukauna including Kaukauna's Friends and Family sculpture garden and the KHS's Galloping Ghost bronze. Along with his good friend Oscar Boldt, Leo was a founding member of the Fox Valley Community Foundation and, in his spare time, pursued a newfound love of opera. Devoted to family, community and country, he was active in Rotary International for 45 years, served on the Kaukauna School Board and several hospital boards, while lovingly conveying his passions and skills to his children and grandchildren.

Leo eagerly embraced life and all the opportunities and challenges it offered, accepted difficulties and painful losses, and epitomized his belief that people don't stop playing, working and learning because they get old, they get old because they stop.

The family offers heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jack Meyer for his many years of doctoring and befriending Leo, as well as Bright Star Home Care whose loving assistance allowed Leo to remain in his home for the last eight months of his life--dying where he'd been born 96 9/12 years ago--in particular Carol Brauer and aides, Michelle, Ina, Diane and Shantal. We also extend our gratitude to Affinity Visiting Nurses and Hospice, for all their help over the last 2 months of Leo's life, especially the PT, OT and volunteer staff, Social Workers and RNs especially Shelly, Tracy, Barbie, and Cass; dear friends Tom Nelson and Mike Weaver - who is Senior Ride Captain for the Patriot Guard Riders.

A memorial service for Leo will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna, with a reception to follow. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church on Friday afternoon beginning at 4:00 PM.

Appleton - Was called to Heaven on July 10, 2018 at the age of 99 ½ years. Esther passed away peacefully at Manor Care Nursing Home in Appleton, WI after a brief illness. Esther was born on December 7, 1918 in Dundas, WI to Mike and Bertha (Van Bockel) Driessen. Esther was joined in marriage to Quinten DeBruin on February 19, 1947 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Hollandtown.
Esther was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Appleton, WI. Esther enjoyed family gatherings, playing sheephead, crocheting, collecting dolls, cookie jars, and Elvis plates. She also enjoyed auctions and bingo. Esther loved the Milwaukee Brewers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Brett Favre. Esther was a homemaker her entire life and loved taking care of her husband and children.
Esther is survived by her sons Don (Lynne) and Jim (Helen) and her grandchildren Todd (Meredith), DeBruin, Corey DeBruin, Holly (Justin) Wessel, Jessica DeBruin, Paul (Jennifer) Kropidlowski, and Sabrina (Todd) DeBruin, her great grandchildren Camdon, McKinley, Helena, Benson, Brielyn, Brandon, Coty, Lance, Chandler, and Felicity. and three great great grandchildren. Further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Esther is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Quinten, her grandson Kelly Kropidlowski , and her siblings Ray (Florence) Driessen, Harvey (Minnie, Erma) Driessen), Barney (Mary) Driessen and Helen (Jack) Mader.
Visitation will be held at Wichmann Funeral Homes-Tri County Chapel, 1592 S. Oneida Street, on Monday July 16th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Barney Driessen, age 95, passed away at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna on Saturday, December 2, 2017. Barney was born in the town of Woodville on September 2, 1922, son of the late Michael and Bertha (Ver Bockel) Driessen. He married Mary Van Roy on February 7, 1946.
Barney was a life-long member of St. Katharine Drexel (St. Francis) Parish in Hollandtown, worked on the family farm for over forty years, worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper, and plowed snow and worked on the town roads in Woodville for many years before becoming Town Chairman. He held the Chairman position for twenty-four years. Being a busy man, he also found time to work at the Dundas Canning Factory as well as delivering milk and eggs to migrant workers in the area.
Barney was a very active member of the Dusty Trails Snowmobile Club, and drove his four-wheeler well into his 90's. He had a great love of fishing, bowling, baseball, and playing sheepshead, cribbage, and scott with his many friends. He enjoyed being an umpire in Hollandtown for the youth baseball program, loved to watch his sons play football, and loved to cheer on the Packers and the Brewers. Two of his great joys were going to Dan and Lyn's cottage up north, as well as trips to the casino.
Barney is survived by seven children: Carol (Ed) Carroll of Hollandtown, Lyn (Dan) Smith of Hollandtown, Pat (Larry, deceased) Jensen of Waupaca, Jerry (Peg) Driessen of Kaukauna, Tom (Vicki) Driessen of Kaukauna, Dick (Linda) Driessen of Kaukauna, and Bill Driessen of Brillion. He also leaves behind a sister: Esther DeBruin, and a sister-in-law: Josie Robinson. There are also seventeen grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary in 1990, and infant son Dennis Gary, his in-laws Martin and Frances Van Roy; his faithful companion of twenty-three years Ag Liebergen; two brothers Ray (Florence) Driessen and Harvey (Minnie, Erma) Driessen; a sister Helen (Jack) Mader; and in-laws Quinten DeBruin, Casey (Marge) Van Roy, Toni (Elmer) Lopas, Gerald Grissman, Grace (Melvin) Graf, Edward Wirth, and Don Robinson.
The funeral liturgy for Barney will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH - ST. FRANCIS CHURCH in Hollandtown, with Msgr. James Vanden Hogen officiating. Gretchen Marie Doering, nee Driessen, 97, Kaukauna, died on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at her home. She was born on May 4, 1910, daughter of the late Edward "Cy" and Regina (Clarke) Driessen. Gretchen graduated from Kaukauna High School and attended two years of business college. She married Harvey Doering who preceded her in death in 1989. She and Harvey owned and operated the Doering's Super Valu Stores. Gretchen was actively involved in the community serving as a PTA president and president of the Business and Professional Woman's Club of Kaukauna. She also actively supported programs for developmentally disabled citizens. She loved playing bridge, golfing, dancing, playing Scrabble and creating beautiful needlework.
As the oldest, she is survived by her brother, Gene Driessen and her sister, Katherine Dickinson. Gretchen's children are William (Patricia) Doering, Appleton; Sharon (Gene) Fassbender, Appleton; and Kathi (Terry) Bulfin, Bellevue, Wash. She was a loving grandmother to John Doering, Amy (Paul) Kraft, Steven Doering, Paul (Caryl) Fassbender, Jeanne (Kevin) Stein, Sarah (Todd) Fellerer, David (Debbie) Atwood, Regina (Simon) Mawby, Ehrin and Kaila Bulfin. The twinkle in her eye came from her 14 great-grandchildren, Gus, Ray, Henry and Ned Kraft; Quincy Fassbender; Tyler, Shelbi and Tatum Stein; Sam and Casey Fellerer; Noelle and Regan Atwood; Winifred and Gretchen Mawby.

Patricia A. Jansen, Little Chute, age 85, died Saturday November 22, 2014 at her home. She was born in Little Chute on February 1, 1929 to the late Joseph and Katherine (Schumacher) Driessen. Pat married Jim Jansen on August 25, 1949 at St. John Nepomucene. He preceded her in death on September 3, 2007 after 59 years of marriage. She taught at St. John School for over 25 years until her retirement in 1993. As a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Pat sang in the Resurrection Choir and enjoyed sewing with the ladies in the Mission Club. She also volunteered and sang at Parkside Care Center. Pat rarely missed a televised Brewer game and never missed a Packer game.
Pat is survived by her children: Sandy (Jay) Van Thiel, Townsend; Wayne (Karen) Jansen, De Pere; Cheryl (Tom) McCarthy, Appleton; and Bev (Jerry) Romenesko, Kimberly; grandchildren: Nikki Van Thiel (Doug Cunningham) and Jason (Beth Wilson) Van Thiel, Shayne and Brent Jansen, Dani (Charlie) Hietpas, Tannor (Tonya) Williams, Eric (Kim), Scott (Jamie) and Tami (Kurt Smith) Romenesko; great grandchildren: Lily, Cole, Macy, Crue, Gabriella, Meadow, Hailey, Ethan, Dayne and Annabel; and brother Kenneth (Joan) Driessen. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Virginia M. LaCount, "Ginna" , Menasha, age 74, passed away on Monday Octo ber 4, 2004 at her home with family by her side after a long battle with c ancer. Ginna was born January 9, 1930 in Appleton daughter of the late Jo hn and Lucille (Dressen) Schneider. She married Robert LaCount on May 1 6, 1976 and he survives her.
Ginna was a member of St. Mary's parish Menasha. She enjoyed reading, goi ng to Dixieland band concerts and she was an amateur artist. She also enjo yed full time RV traveling.

1942 Kaukauna Times dated December 30th 1942 Verhagen brothers meet in N ew Guinea Army camp. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Verhagen West seventh Street rece ived word this week from two of their sons Steve and Ervin relating how th ey met somewhere in New Guinea after not having seen each other for two ye ars. The parents, knowing that both boys were in New Guinea had hoped th ey would meet and were exceedingly happy to learn they were together at Ch ristmas time. Ervin stated in his letter "I spent yesterday with Steve a nd had a very good time. I also met another school buddy over there. I ask ed the Capt. for the day off yesterday and he was really swell about it be cause we're pretty darn busy all the time. A fellow really doesn't mind wo rking for a man like that. I was reading the hometown paper over in Steve' ss outfit and boy it sure did seem good to read a paper from back home ." Steve wrote "Ervin is about 7 mi. from where I am stationed, so we hav en't very far to go and see each other. It sure was a big relief to know t hat I have seen somebody from home. I had to tell somebody so I am writi ng to tell you that I found Ervin. I know that you will feel good abo ut it too." Steve enlisted in the National Guard immediately after the dra ft and Ervin enlisted in August 1941. Two other sons of the Verhagen's a re also enlisted men in the service. They are Melvin who is stationed in C alifornia and Eugene who is at Great Lakes Naval Training Station

Obituary:
Corpo ral Steven C. Verhagen killed in action in Pacific; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ve rhagen, 206 West Seventh Street, received a telegram from the adjutant gen eral of the War Department Saturday informing them that their son Corpor al Steven C. Verhagen 26, was killed in action in defense of his country D ecember 31st, in the southwest Pacific area. Verhagen apparently died in t he assault on Burma. He was one of four brothers in the service. He was bo rn May 11th 1916 in this city and attended St. Mary's parochial schoo l. He joined the Army in September 1940 as a member of Company D of Applet on. Early in December he met his brother, Sergeant Ervin Verhagen in New G uinea. They had not seen each other for two years and had been stationed o nly 7 mi. apart. It was a happy meeting for the two brothers. A letter rec eived by the family informed them that the two brothers had planned on mee ting again on December 30th the day before Steven was killed. Steven serv ed as a machine gunner. Survivors are his parents; four brothers Sergea nt Ervin serving in New Guinea, second-class seamen Melvin of Mare Isla nd California, second-class seaman Eugene Indianapolis, Indiana, Jero me at home; three sisters Mrs. Walter Swaninnson, Mrs. Vincent Biese of K aukauna, Mrs. Edward Staniak, Menasha, the grandmothers, Mrs. Mrs. Dora Ve rhagen of Little Chute and Mrs. Catherine Bergman, Waupaca. Ervin J. Verhagen, Kaukauna Age 80, died on Thursday, September 28, 2000 at his home. He was bo rn on March 9, 1920, in New London, the son of the late Louis and Catheri ne (Bergman) Verhagen. Ervin served his country in the South Pacific duri ng World War II while enlisted in the US Army and received four battle sta rs and a purple heart. Ervin enjoyed woodworking and building replica shi ps out of toothpicks. He later married the former Dorothy Van Zeeland on January 20, 1945, she preceded h im in death in 1997. He was employed at Thilmany Pulp and Paper for 36 yea rs until his retirement in 1982. Coxswain Melvin Verhagen arrived Friday to spend a 30-day leave with his mother before reporting to San Pedro, California where he received an honorable discharge under the point system. He was stationed on the USS South Dakota, Admiral Halsey's flagship. He had been in the Navy three years and overseas more than two years of that time. Verhagen wears the Asian-Pacific ribbon with seven battle stars and the Pacific liberation ribbon. He was employed at the Kaukauna Times before he entered service.

Eugene A. "Gene" Verhagen, Kaukauna, age 93, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Atrium Post Acute Care in Little Chute. He was born on March 29, 1923 in Kaukauna to the late Louis and Catherine (Bergman) Verhagen. Eugene enlisted into the Navy in November, 1942 and was discharged in December, 1945.
While in the Navy, Gene met the love of his life, Rita, on a blind date on Christmas Eve, 1943. He asked her to be his pen pal when he went overseas for 2 years. Upon his discharge at Great Lakes, IL he returned to California for a brief visit at Rita's home and proposed to her. They quickly planned a formal wedding within 2 weeks and rode back to Wisconsin together.
Gene retired from Appleton Papers, Locks Mill in 1985 after 44 years of service as a millwright. He was a hardworking man and had a great crew to work with for many years. Gene enjoyed his job because it presented him with a different challenge almost every day.
Gene became a member of the American Legion Post 41 in Kaukauna and the Quarter Century Club at Appleton Papers Locks Mill. He was a lifelong member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish (St. Mary of the Annunciation Church) in Kaukauna where he was a Mass server, lector, Eucharistic minister and parish handyman.
In addition to making many things for the parish, he also made things for family and friends. Gene loved working with wood but in later years, acquired a hobby better suited to his health and became a "hooker" - working on a loom to make latch hook rugs and wall hangings for family and friends.
Gene and Rita enjoyed traveling to California by car, train and planes. They took two Hawaiian cruises and one to the Caribbean. Gene and Rita enjoyed golfing and playing cards. They were Packer season ticket holders for 38 years and greatly enjoyed the Lombardi and Holmgren eras.
Gene is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rita; children: Linda (Jim) Allen of Novato, CA; Ronald (Lynn) of Appleton; Diane (Bill) Murphy of Appleton; and Louis (Laurie) of Sheboygan; grandchildren: Jason (Coreen Baker) Allen, Dana (Mark) Aughney, Robert (Terri) Verhagen, Pete Verhagen, Erin (Dan) Dunbar, Heather Bastjan, Michael (Heidi Welk) Verhagen and Thomas Verhagen; great grandchildren: Kayla and Alicia Verhagen, Keara and Devin Aughney, Caitlin, Raegan and Rory Dunbar, Blake and Emily Bastjan and Hunter Allen; great great grandson: Bentley; and sister-in-law: Beatrice Lufi. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sisters: Leucina (infant), Johanna (Clarence) Fink, Regina (Walter) Swanningson and Rosemary (Vincent Biese, William) Kramer; by brothers: Steven, Ervin (Dorothy), Melvin and Jerome (Kathryn); sister-in-law: Helen (Devo) Mason; and brother-in-law: Harvey Lufi.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 15, 2016 at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH - ST. MARY CHURCH (119 W. 7th St. Kaukauna) beginning at 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 12:00 Noon. The Rev. Robert R. "Bob" Bergman, beloved father and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016. Bob was born on March 19, 1929 to the late Peter and Mary (Reichel) Bergman in Kaukauna, he graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1947. He served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 and on July 12, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, and love of his life, Mary Ellen Williamsen at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton.
He is survived by his son Jim, two daughters; Sandy (Kirk) Nichols and Shari (Greg) Anderson, four grandchildren; Ashley Bergman, Luke Anderson, Sam Anderson and Lily Nichols, four step grandchildren; Jason (Callie) Lauer, Jacquelyn (Matt) McQuaid, Jon Nichols and Joe (Catherine) Nichols, eight step great grandchildren; Ashlee, Scout, Samantha, Jersey, Willem, Beckett, Emy and Ryker.
Other survivors include: sister and brother-in-law Shirley and John Hietpas, sister-in-law Donna Petersen as well as many nieces and nephews. Shirley J. Hietpas, age 83, of Little Chute, passed away peacefully in the arms of her family on Monday, November 7, 2016, after a courageous four month battle with cancer. She was born on October 31, 1933, daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Riechel) Bergman. On February 14, 1956, Shirley married John G. Hietpas, and together this year they celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Shirley was a loving wife and a wonderful mother and grandmother. She kept up the home and raised six daughters. As the grandchildren came, her and John would attend as many of their activities as possible. Shirley enjoyed bowling, fishing up north with Luke and Molle, cribbage, Wheel of Fortune and traveling to Branson, MO. You could find Shirley driving around town in her beloved '95 Dodge Spirit, just barely peaking over the wheel! She kept her birdfeeders full so that she could enjoy watching the birds and all the wildlife in the back yard. Shirley loved to listen to John play guitar and sing. She will be forever missed by her entire family.

Matt Vanden Boogaard, age 93, of Kimberly, was surrounded by the love of his family when he entered into eternal life on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Waiting to greet him was his wife of 65 years, Marian, two sons-in-law, his parents, brothers and sister and many other relatives. He was born May 29, 1918, in Kimberly, the son of Henry and Frances (Ver Voort) Vanden Boogaard. On April 17, 1943, while serving his country in San Francisco, California, he married Marian Jean Melendy with whom he spent the next 65 years. Upon returning from the service they settled in Kimberly and remained there to raise their family. Matt was a lifelong member of Holy Name/Holy Spirit Church. He enjoyed spending his leisure time with his family at Shawano Lake and later at Clover Leaf Lakes.
Matt was a very active man and was especially involved with his church, the community and the William Verhagen American Legion Post #60 of Kimberly. Over the years, he had many occupations which required him to travel around the state, something he enjoyed very much. In his retirement, he was always helping someone on a project, volunteering somewhere or going for his daily walk. Matt enjoyed being with his family and following his grandchildren's many endeavors. He loved life, stayed active and was healthy for 90+ years. In 2010, he was honored as a veteran of WWII and traveled to Washington D.C. on the Old Glory Honor Flight.

Paul F. Vanden Boogaard, 90, one of God's carpenters, was called home on Sunday, May 30, 2010, at Rennes Health and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness. He was born in Kimberly, on June 22, 1919, the son of the late Henry and Frances (Ver Voort) Vanden Boogaard. On April 14, 1945, he married Evelyn Laux at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Appleton. He served proudly in the Army Air Corp during World War II.
After Paul was discharged, he started his life as a carpenter for O.J. Boldt Construction Company for over 25 years. Paul loved going to their cottage on White Lake, outside Weyauwega. He enjoyed fishing and working on and around the cottage with his sons, Paul and Tom. In his mid-70's, Paul tried his hand at golf. He always had fun.
Paul is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn; his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Paul (Leslie) Vanden Boogaard, Shiocton, and their son, Brian Vanden Boogaard, Wausau; Tom (Sandi) Vanden Boogaard, Weyauwega, and their daughter, Erin (Jim) Kraft, Appleton, and their daughters, Olivia and Mariah, and son, Kyle Vanden Boogaard, Appleton; sister and brothers, Maxine Wichman, Kimberly; Maridel (Ed) Prelwitz, Savannah, Ga.; and Matt Vanden Boogaard, Kimberly. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Elmer (Opel), Bernard (Audrey), Vince (Esther), Robert Vanden Boogaard and Ester (Norb) Schwab; brother and sister-in-law, Otto Wichman and Marion Vanden Boogaard.
The funeral liturgy will be at 12 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, 222 E. Fremont Street, Appleton. Friends will be received at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Menasha.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Rennes and Renaissance for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Paul's name is being established.

Elmer J. Vanden Boogaard, 89, Appleton, died Friday Oct. 2, 2009, at Grand Horizons after a short illness. He was born in Kimberly on July 20, 1920, to the late Henry and Frances (Ver Voort) Vanden Boogaard. While attending Kimberly High School, Elmer lettered in four sports and was offered a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. On July 16, 1945, he married Opal Jensen at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Chicago. Their witnesses were the janitor and the rectory cook. He then returned to his war duties in England. Elmer was a member of the William Verhagen American Legion Post 60 for over 60 years. He was also a member of St. Joseph Parish, Appleton. Elmer was named to the first athletic Hall of Fame at Kimberly High School. Elmer and Opal square danced with the Romeos and Calicos and enjoyed time spent at the family cottage on Nabor Road on Shawano Lake. She preceded him in death April 14, 2007. A strong advocate of Catholic education, Elmer endowed 9 students at Xavier High School. He was a strong philanthropist, especially to St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Green Bay Catholic Diocese.

Bernice M. Van Domelen (Schoenke-Reynebeau) of Appleton, died Thursday, August 19, 2011, at Brewster Village at the age of 87. Bernice was born July 4, 1924, in Little Chute, the daughter of the late Mathew and Louise (Marx) Reynebeau. She married Lee Schoenke in 1947, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute. He preceded her in death in April of 1976. In 1988, she married Martin Van Domelen who preceded her in death in November of 2007. Bernice enjoyed rummage sales, rose gardening and being with her family; especially her grandchildren.
Bernice is survived by her children: Dave (Sally) Schoenke, Appleton; Sue (Don) Jungen, Sherwood; and Richard (Merry) Schoenke, Wilson. Bernice had been the proud grandparent of several grandchildren: Steven (Stacey) Schoenke, Katie (Brian) Mitchell, Craig (Stephanie) Webb, Stacy Voldsness, Andre Jungen, Blake Jungen, Ian Schoenke, Lauren Schoenke and Bryce Schoenke. Bernice also had several great grandchildren: Ally, Olivia, and Lauren Mitchell; Michael and Sarah Schoenke; Mercedes, Taylor, Sonya, and Olivia Webb; Tavia Voldsness; and Rachelle Jungen; siblings: Rosella (Joe) Look; Orion "Poogey" (Louis) Reynebeau; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Reynebeau and Ceil Reynebeau; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Florence Van Hoof, Myrtle (George) Roovers, Virgil "Butch" Reynebeau, Joe Reynebeau, and brothers-in-law, Ken Van Hoof and George (Jane) Schoenke.
The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E. Fremont St., Appleton, with Fr. Tom Reynebeau officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Bernice's name.
