Smits, Francis J.Francis J. Smits, 87, De Pere died Friday, April 15, 2005, at a local hosp ital. Francis was born July 8, 1917, in De Pere, to the late John and Eliz abeth (Sanders) Smits. He married the former Betty J. Mikle on Aug. 2, 194 7, at St. Mary Catholic Church in De Pere. Francis was proud to serve h is country in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II, at Pearl Harbo r. He then worked at the Green Bay Correctional Institute for over 30 year s, retiring in the early ’80s. Francis loved flowers, gardening, and woodw orking. He built many birdhouses and enjoyed watching the birds and feedi ng them. Francis was an avid sports fan who enjoyed following the Packer s, Brewers, and the PGA, especially Tiger Woods.Survivors include his wife, Betty; a son, John and Paula Smits, De Pere a nd their children, Matthew and Michael; a daughter, Patricia and F. Pet er Van Duyse, Green Bay and their children, Sarah Van Duyse, Nashville, Te nn. and Melissa (Jamie) Virnig, De Forest, Wis., and their son, Sam; thr ee sisters, Joyce and Gerald Hendricks, Bette Mae Smits, Florence Moenssen s, all of De Pere; a sister-in-law, Leona Smits, Green Bay; and nieces a nd nephews.He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence Smits, Marvin (Dorothy) Smi ts; sisters Sr. Clarella, Mary Ann (Edward) Anderson; brother-in-law, Edwa rd Moenssens.Friends may call at the Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., De Per e, on Monday, April 18, 2005, from 10 a.m. to noon. Memorial service wi ll be held noon Monday at the funeral home with Fr. John H. Harper officia ting.
