Joe loved music and could play piano, banjo, accordion, and tuba. He also enjoyed Friday night card games surrounded by his family. Joe took the trip of a lifetime last October on the Old Glory Honor Flight with daughter, Jan, traveling as his guardian. He and Val also enjoyed two trips to Germany during retirement to visit relatives.
Joe will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Val; his four children, Mark (Ellen) Roemer, Oshkosh; Chris (Debbie) Roemer, Appleton; Jan (Tom) McHugh, Neenah; Ellen (Tuffer) Kunz, Neenah; and grandsons, Colin McHugh, Madison; and Casey McHugh, LaCrosse.

    Obituary:
Mark Anthony Roemer, born on December 20, 1952 in Neenah, died Thursday, February 13, 2014 as a result of adenocarcinoma. You may have seen Mark in the past 40 years walking in Oshkosh at top speed with his white cane extended, his whole body focused on his goal. Mark survived a pituitary cancer in 1958, but lost nearly all of his sight in the process. Mark attended the sight saving program in Oshkosh via the public school system. He attained a Bachelor of Science degree at UWO, majoring in mathematics and tutored math students there. He also loved "Man and the Biosphere," a class offered by the Biology Dept. and taught by Dr. Neil Harriman and Dr. William Sloey. Mark was very eco conscious and always tried to do his best to protect our environment. He was an avid Star Trek fan and could name the title, air date, program number, and stardate of any episode. He also loved Jazz, Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Television, especially news and science programs. He enjoyed listening to recorded books and his many records. He loved going to Lara's Tortilla Flats, Asian Garden, Sai Ram, and most recently Sakura.
His fascination with the names of nearby stars caused him to meet his wife Ellen at UWO Polk Library in 1987. In recent years they enjoyed traveling to Madison for Jazz on the Deck at Otto's on the west side where Michael Hanson's Jazz Combo enchants everyone during the summer.
Mark is survived by his wife of 24.86 years, Ellen Pelton Roemer; his mother Val Roemer, Menasha; sisters Jan (Tom) McHugh, Neenah, and Ellen (Christopher) Kunz, Neenah; brother Chris (Debbie) Roemer, Appleton; two nephews, Colin McHugh, Seattle, and Casey McHugh (fiancé Stephanie) teaching in El Salvador; aunt and uncles Gladys and Jerry Long, and Ed Backus; cousins Tom, Gary, Diane, Beth, Laura, Julie, Jean, and Molly Long, Tom and Linda Roemer, Cathy and Craig Smith, John and Tom Backus, Paul and Gerritt Smith, and many more; step-children Amy (Mike) Muth, Jeremy and Paul Beining; step-grandsons Justin and Adam Muth; sisters-in-law Marg (Gordon) Lewis, Liz Albrecht, brothers-in-law John Casey (Janet) Pelton, and Russ Pelton; and family friends Harpreet and Manpreet Kaur, Charles and Virginia Latimer, and John and Diane Hoffman.
Mark has many friends who have helped ease his recent illness. Friends from college Henry Beno and Larry and Eileen Frye; Dick and Kay Hurkman, Michael and Rose Hanson, what is known as Science Club Breakfast friends and their wives, Neil and Bettie Harriman, William and Veeda Sloey, Jim and Vrenie Paulson, John Lucas, Gene Drektra, Jack Casper, Rodney Cyrus, Norris Jones, Brian McKnight, John Karl, Dave Strohmeyer, Leonard Tews, and Fred Spangler; UWO Jazz Band director Marty Robinson; people of Trinity Episcopal Church; Oshkosh Public Library Reference Desk; members of the League of Women Voters; the staff at Aurora Hospital and Theda Care clinic, and especially The Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora: Dr. Dar, Dr. Hsi, Amy, Kathy, Karin, Sandy, Nell, Jessica, Debbie, Missy, Dawn, Lisa, Laurie, Brianna, Gandriel, and Nicole.
He was preceded in death by his father Joseph James Roemer and many aunts and uncles. The family will have a memorial gathering in the Spring.
Memorials can be directed to UWO Biology, Math or Music Departments, National Science Foundation, WPT, WPR, American Cancer Society or Aurora Vince Lombardi Clinic.
The family wishes to thank staff at Aurora Hospice, Jean, Amy, Shelley, and Vicky, for their kind and compassionate care.
