Services To Be Held At Cooperstown Church For Priest Killed In Auto Accident Struck down by an oncoming car whose driver could not see the parked automobile in front of him owing to glaring lights from an approaching car, Rev. "ernard Jacobs, priest of the St. James Catholic church at Cooperstown, sustained a fractured skull and crushed chest which caused his death as he was being rush- ed to a hospital at Green Bay shortly before midnight Sunday. Omar Hansen, 19-year-old Two Rivers student, was not held following his report of the circumstances to the authorities. Rev. Jacobs, 52,; was returning to Cooperstown from Wrightstown in company with his two sisters, Miss Mary, and Frances Jacobs, and his nephew, Bernard Jacobs of Appleton, when the right rear tire became punctured. He halted his machine on the right side of the road on Highway 141 about 400 feet north of the Manitowoc county line, and was engaged in the repair of the tire when the Hansen machine approached from Denmark and struck him. Didn't See Parked Car Hansen did not see, the parked automobile until too late to avoid the collision, according to a statement made by him, and rather than strike an oncoming car he sought to pass the Jacobs automobile on the right shoulder of the road, but in doing so struck Father Jacobs. He immediately halted his car and placed the injured man. into it for the run to Green Bay, but the injuries proved fatal before the hospital was reached. Rev. Jacobs had been in charge of the Cooperstown parish since 1922 having come to that township after serving in Oshkosh, in Brown county and other places since his ordination in 1909. He was born in Holland and came to this country and to Appleton with his parents in 1883 and had been an almost continuous resident of this state. Funeral services will be held at the St. James church at Cooperstown at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, and interment will be made at St. Joseph's cemetery at Appleton. Father Jacobs-was popular with his parishoners and the community in which he served, and his tragic death has cast a pall over the northern section of the county in which he was widely known.

Re St Joseph's Cemetery, Appleton: I notice a number of the deceased with a birth year of 1905 also have a death year of 1905. I realize infant deaths were common, but several of these females are listed with a maiden name, including my ancestor Clara Stein Jacobs. I am wondering if these death dates could be checked. Clara's birthdate is listed as Feb 24,1905 (which I believe is correct) and her death date is listed as May 18, 1968 (which I do not know).
Thank you for this great website!

Reverend James T. Jacobs, 94, Green Bay, peacefully passed away on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011. He was born June 27, 1916, in Appleton, Wis., to the late Peter and Adele (Krohn) Jacobs. He was the 3rd of eight children. Father Jim, as he was lovingly called by most, graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1931. He then attended the Salvatorian Minor Seminary at St. Nazianz, Wis., from 1931 to 1937 and St. Francis Seminary, St. Francis, Wis., from 1937 to 1943. He celebrated his Golden Jubilee in 1993 and his 60th anniversary as a priest in 2003.
He retired at his lake home, where neighbors could find the "Padre of the Pines" on Hemlock Lake riding his water bike or on the golf course. In the winter he was often seen cross-country skiing or plowing out the drive. Father Jim most recently moved to Grellinger Hall, home for retired priests, a part of the McCormick Home in Green Bay.
Even though he retired in 1986 after 57 years of service, Father Jim still was called upon to celebrate Mass throughout the diocese impacting over 40 parishes with his sense of humor and short homilies.

He graduated from Sacred Heart grade school in 1933 and from St. Mary's Menasha high school in 1937. He moved to Michigan to work at the Kalamazoo Plating Co. where he met and fell in love with Amy, his future wife. In 1942 he joined the Army Air Corps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After training at the Chicago School of Aircraft Instruments he was sent to England on the Queen Elizabeth in 1942. He was an active member in his parish churches as council member, financial committee, lector, choir member and Eucharistic Minister; and was active in the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing his electric Hawaiian guitar, fermenting his own wine and especially spending time with his loving wife and children swimming, playing volleyball, croquet and other family activities. Walter was known by many for his cheerful smile and big hugs. He was a very devout Catholic and was grateful for all his blessings. Walter was a kind, loving, devoted husband and father who worked hard to support his wife and 8 children.

The family would like to thank the staffs at St. Mary's Hospital and Unity Hospice for their sensitivity, guidance and support.
    Dear God,
We look to You with gratitude,
    for making Walter our Dad.
You gave him arms to hold us,
when we felt alone or sad.
    You made him conscientious,
to provide for us to live.
    You gave our Dad compassion,
which taught us how to give.
His smile was there each morning,
to send us on our way.
His back was tough to carry all,
the stress that came each day.
His hand was firm, yet gentle,
to teach us right from wrong.
His faith was strong to guide us,
on Your path now that he's gone.
His heart, which filled us full of love,
that we may share with others.
But most of all, You helped him find,
    our precious, loving Mother.
So, 'Thank You' Lord for giving us,
    the best we could've had.
We are forever grateful to You,
    for making Walter our Dad.
